I'm new here. I gained about 80 pounds due to being in a DV relationship and drinking to take the pain away. I finally got out and had him arrested. However, I still feel depressed and want to look better and cant stand looking in the mirror anymore. It's hard to afford a gym membership which would definitely help. Any recommendations? I have a Planet Fitness down the street. (I don't drive right now because my ex damaged my car.) So I can't access the free resources, such as the YMCA. I was wondering if anyone lived in CT and would like a workout buddy and I can split the cost? I know I can excercise at home and go for walks, however, I think the gym is the best place as I have no money to buy any equipment. Thank you for listening and please no judgement.

You don't need a gym (or equipment) to get fit. There are bodyweight exercises that you can do at home.0

Big props to you for turning your life around (and getting that ^&*( arrested as earned). You're a champ!
There is SO MUCH exercise content on YouTube for free. Look for examples from people with real physical therapy or personal training credentials. Lots of good things take no equipment at all.
There's a thread here where people discuss strength training programs they've found beneficial. Despite the thread title, some of them are free bodyweight programs that take minimal or no equipment. (And usually even the "minimal equipment" ones can be done with routine household items, or there are substitute exercises that don't require equipment.)

Someone with your character and determination absolutely can succeed at this. If you'd like some social support, maybe consider joining one of the exercise threads here. There are various challenges and such (especially in this area: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/categories/challenges), but there are also threads here and there that include multiple workout types. These are a couple of examples of the latter:

If you reach a point where you think you could afford to buy some thing(s), consider the used market. Charity shops, online listings, etc., often have exercise equipment at a steep discount (from people who thought they wanted to exercise ).
Best wishes for success!

Hugs to you and for making a courageous change for yourself.
It is completely possible to get in shape without a gym. An easy thing to start is walking, walking, walking. It helps clear the mind and helps the body. Look online for workouts that use your own body weight. You could get ankle & hand weights at thrift store and use those when you're walking. Good luck!0 -
