Yes, unfortunately Canada Post likes to do that around Christmas. I'm not sending anything to my family this year.

I lost track here and couldn’t find my last post, so I hope I don’t repeat.
Everyone sounds SO ready for Christmas! Since I got this new manager job I’ve been dog paddling through the days, just keeping my head above water and everything else has gone by the wayside. I’m basically on call 24/7/365 but took the job to accomplish a financial goal we’ve set ourselves.
That said, I have a steadily growing pile of packages from Black Friday through Cyber Monday for gifts. I absolutely refuse to go out in the world shopping and even use the shopping service for groceries (!)
I also laid in a stash of gift bags and goodies to make bags for my 25 employees (thank you Amazon) and hope to put them all together to hand out next week.
I’m working on “improving and streamlining” one meal a day. I chose lunch. I made a pot of Cuban style black beans and bring 1cup plus an apple to work each day. Up until now, I have never eaten before dinner or taken breaks so the struggle is to let go of work and sit and eat for fifteen minutes. As it is, this week I ate at my computer while
working, but it’s a start to a new habit. Next I’m making Cajun Red Beans to try.
Cards will be my replies to my pen pals across the globe. I’m part of a fountain pen group and have been corresponding in that manner for ten years now. Just hoping I find the time—so many of my favorite pastimes are stalled with this new job.
Thank you for the welcomes, I’ll try to keep up better this week!
Diana
Hello there from Whidbey Island. Your island is definitely more longer and skinnier than my island! Whidbey is 37 miles long and 10 miles wide. Yours is 100+ miles long and 1 mile wide, really interesting!
I also write to about 15 pen pals all over. I like the pace of a letter. If you wish to add another pen pal it would be interesting to write to you. Just send me a Message on here.
I try to eat one meal a day, but its usually 2. We are retired so there's that!

Debbie - I think I would be tempted to just go stay at my Mom’s in your shoes. His mother is terrible.
Lisa - the supplies for the Cricut are pricy. I only buy when I’m working on a specific project.
Truthfully, I was never very interested in one. The only reason I have it is because we wanted to make things for Kaitlyn’s wedding. It probably paid for itself in that process. Since then it doesn’t get used nearly as often.
I love the afghan. One of the young lady’s at work today was talking about the price of yarn. What used to be economical ways to dress yourself or have hobbies has gotten to be so trendy that it’s hard to continue to do for a reasonable cost.
Barbie - I feel for you. I’m also in awe of you. I can’t imagine saying no to Rodger if he wanted to stop for takeout, I would be all for it! I really dislike cooking, especially after having my day disrupted.
Carol - I need to think more like you and out the ups and downs of marriage, I think this has been a down year here too. We aren’t fighting or anything. It’s the “or anything” that’s getting me down.
That’s been a lot in the last couple of years. I hope it settles soon.
Pip - is this the new trailer you’ve been working on? It’s beautiful.
Rita - I missed having family around at Christmas, I think for some it’s that sense of nostalgia that makes it a stressful time. I personally miss that feeling of wonder we get as children at Christmas and we keeping looking for it over and over, but now what we as adults have to do all the work of it, we can’t get that feeling back.
Costco - we live about 10 minutes from Costco but I don’t buy a lot there. I find their packaging so big, I do buy my butter, water, cream, bacon and eggs there about once a month.
I didn’t do anything this evening for the first time in two weeks. I took a bath and then watched “The Merry Gentlemen” on Netflix. It’s a fun little movie.
I’m doing shows tomorrow and Sunday. And have a lot to get done in the next week and half for Christmas.

Fortunately this week doesn't look quite as busy. There's lots of work to do at work, but it will stay at work, during working hours. At this point, there's nothing on during the evenings which is really nice!

Well, that idea went out the window as I spent 15 hours working on the database I'm converting yesterday. Fortunately, I was working from home, so I was comfortable. By the time I'm done, this database should be about a quarter its original size and a lot more functional.
It's a beautiful day out there and I would like to go for a bicycle ride, but my left hand wouldn't stand for it - way too sore. I'm going for an ultrasound on Monday.
But I am going to head outside shortly.Latitude27N wrote: »That said, I have a steadily growing pile of packages from Black Friday through Cyber Monday for gifts. I absolutely refuse to go out in the world shopping and even use the shopping service for groceries (!)

I do quite a lot of shopping online too, including groceries. I've been ordering groceries online and having them delivered for almost 7 years. It's fantastic! I rarely have to go into a grocery store.Books in my town and now in the park, we have mini-libraries. It is take a book, leave a book. We have a nice library here but these little ones are all over town. Since we put the one in the park, that is where I put my books and I keep it neat, looking at what’s available in the process. Someone put a bunch of DVD movies in it and they are all gone, including a few my DH took. It’s a nice option for tourists or campers to use without getting a library card. Many times, people leave books with me to get rid of or simply leave books on their picnic table. This is a great option for here. There is one of these mini-libraries by the Chamber of Commerce for example.
RVRita in Roswell
We've got those mini-libraries all over the place here. It's a nice idea.LisaInArkansas wrote: »All that said - I know that I won't keep up with any system of organization that is more work to keep up with than it is to just do the tasks. Remember the big, long, tasks list? Yeah, I don't keep up with it. I just use it as a list to run through every so often to decide whether I need to do something. Sometimes, I remember to put the date I last did it. Most times, I don't. And I never put the due date for when it's due again. Those feel like hard deadlines, and make my stress levels go up when I miss them. I need to not do that.
I do keep looking at various apps, like Sunsama, Microsoft Lists, xTiles, and other productivity organizers like them. None fit my current need. Still thinking about whether there is anything that actually would work without me having to do more work than it's worth... Playing with monday.com now. It's very visual, which is helpful. We'll see if it works for me.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR, which is warming up fast! No fire needed this afternoon.
I like the Keep It Simple approach.
I have a list which exists in Word which I've divided into sections.
1. Book - these are things I need to book soon, like medical appointments
2. Attend/Do - these are things which are coming up and have dates attached, like the medical appointments which I have booked.
3. The following sections are divided into categories like Cycling (and the work I do with the cycling club), Paperwork (like cleaning up my emails, changing our address, etc.), and different parts of the house and garden.
I place specific parts of that list in my Google calendar so I know what I've planned to do that evening.
Some things are recurring - I order groceries on Monday evenings, for example, so my Google calendar has that on each Monday.
I also place all my appointments, meetings etc. on my Google calendar. That's great because if my phone is with me, my calendar is with me, so if I need to book a follow-up appointment or something, I know whether I have space in my calendar or not.Snowflake1968 wrote: »Kylia - I don’t know why people insist on buying themselves something right before Christmas. When I used to buy presents, I used to buy myself something first to start the whole shopping thing off.

I hope hubby’s attitude changes.
DH is going to be asking me what I want soon, I have no idea what to tell him. I want him to spend time with me and I want to do things together. That’s it. I don’t want things just so he can say he got me something. I’m a little perturbed this year.
Tracey in Edmonton
I totally agree with you on both- Dh is always buying stuff for himself especially around the holidays.
I too don't want things from him but would love for him to spend time with me, spend time with me.
The only thing we do together is go shopping- He wants to shop every day. I have asked him to do other things but doesn't want to. Now he just says he doesn't have time because he has to go to his mom. Cant tell her no about anything.
He is always miserable around the holidays because of her- We don't even spend the holiday together because I will not stay home just to go to her house and have them fight and leave my mom alone for the holiday. I go to my mom's on Christmas eve and come home in the afternoon on Christmas. I get home and he is in a pissy mood, saying all he had was a sandwich or what ever(I bring food home for him but he doesn't want to eat it. Then he goes in his room, leaving the gifts under the tree and may stay there for a week or more. Ruins Christmas every year for the past 5 yrs or more. The last two years he did go to my parents house he caused drama- fighting with my nephew(I had to get in between the two of them, arguing about something stupid so he stayed in the bedroom until time to leave, the next year his mom called as we were driving up to mom and dad's throwing a fit about him not being there so he dropped me off and went back to her house(over an hour each way)-got to her house and she was asleep so he just went to our house slept, came up to mom and dad's, was in a bad mood then we had to leave as soon as we ate to go to his mom's. She won't allow son's girlfriend at her house so we had to drop her off at our house for a few hours while we sat at her house. Don't do that anymore. I won't even go over there this year.
Debbie
What if you did something completely different this year.
Don't buy your husband any gifts.
Don't cook.
Don't bring anyone food.
Don't be anywhere near any of the drama.
Instead ...
Tell your mom and you and she are going to ... wherever (New York, San Diego, a ranch in Montana or wherever, Ruby's Inn at Bryce Canyon).
Book a couple rooms in a hotel, cabin, resort or whatever.
Book flights.
Leave on Monday 23 and come back on Friday 27.
Enjoy yourselves!!
If you can't do that ... why drive up to your Mom's on Christmas Eve and back on Christmas Day? Spend the week there! Don't get caught up in all the cooking etc., just relax and enjoy yourself.
You already know how things will turn out if you do the same thing as the last 5 years ... try something different.

Lisa - Great job on the afghans! Nice colors! Good idea getting them squished down for shipping.
Kylia - You had quite a day Thursday!! Hope you can relax and enjoy your time away.
Terri - so glad your DH got the "drunken" rowan tree down safely. Less to worry about the next time big winds come whipping through. Stunning flower arrangement.
Heather - those stuffing balls look delicious. Great idea making a bunch and freezing them.
Carol - sorry it's been such a bad year for you with family losses. (((HUGS)))) Your DH took on a lot in overseeing BNL's care and now the estate and those expenses. I'd be concerned too.
I had lunch with several former co-workers yesterday, it was fun getting together with them and catching up. As we were eating, one of them got a text that a local optometrist, in his late 50's, had passed away! Three of us were his patients. We had all noticed he was developing quite a "beer belly" - I'm sure he didn't drink. He was such a nice guy and family man.
It's warm (45F) and windy this morning. I think I have everything battened down - I'll find out when the sun rises.

Lanette - The stuffing is to take to my son's house for Christmas. There are 7 of us, so I wanted to make sure there was plenty. He will be cooking the turkey, potatoes and veggies, so I am doing stuffing, bread sauce, carrot and swede puree, and the Christmas pudding and Chocolate roulade. Three down, two to go. All my stuff can be prepared in advance and frozen.
My friend G is off to Singapore today. I have been encouraging her with her packing, which she makes extremely complicated for herself. Progress has been made.
Got some sticky stuff arriving today for anchoring decs, plus a sequin bow for the top of the tree.
Barbie - I know you don't like takeaway food, but could Jake order in? He could have what he likes without you having to leave the house? You could just eat your food.
I have a cleaner, I have food shopping delivered, I rarely buy any items in shops. I'm not doing presents. I don't have indoor plants, or pets. The car is John's responsibility.
John is cooking tonight. (Hence I could make the stuffing). He put up the tree and decorated it. He changed his bedclothes today and put them in the washing machine.
Minimalism isn't just about clutter. It's about simplifying your life so there's less stress and saying no to anything you don't want to do. There are a lot of things I enjoy and jobs in the house that are my responsibility, but if I can avoid extra, unnecessary work, I will.
Now to make lunch!

After I moved to Australia, I struggled with the Christmas feeling for a while because things are different here. It's the Southern Hemisphere, so it's warm and summer at Christmas, and while some traditions are much the same (based on British traditions), it has a different feeling. And I also miss the childlike Christmas wonder.
But then I started thinking about my favourite parts of Christmas when I was young ... younger.
Presents? No. The presents were nice, of course, but they don't stand out for me. My family gave up the whole Christmas present thing a while back because we live so far apart and we don't need anything. I think we're all trying to get rid of stuff.
Food? No. I tie certain foods and Christmas together like mandarin oranges, mixed nuts, mince tarts, shortbread, fruitcake, and halva. So I'll have a few more of those things in December ... just something a bit different from the usual. Although one of the things that changed for me in Australia is that mandarin oranges disappear about the end of November. Mangos and cherries are the Christmas fruits. Fortunately, I love mangos!!
Family? Not really. Our family is so scattered and has been for years. Family members have changed. Some are gone. Yes, I've got wonderful memories of Christmases with my family and I'm happy about that. But now my family is my husband and our cat, and there's no Christmas pressure from either of them.
Decorations? Yes! Especially the lights. I must have been a moth in another life ... I am so attracted to lights. When I lived on my own, I had clear twinkle lights in all my plants and draped everywhere. Even now, I have clear twinkle lights in jars which I bring out in the middle of winter.
Music? Yes! Christmas music relaxes me.
One of my favourite memories as a child was this ...
On Sunday afternoons (and probably all afternoons when I was quite young), I took a nap. At Christmas time, my mother would fold a blanket under the Christmas tree for a mattress, and then turn on the Christmas lights. I'd get my pillow and blanket and lie there looking at the lights until I fell asleep. Then later, I'd wake up and lie there looking at the lights for a while. Often my mother would have put on Christmas music too. I loved it. So yes, Christmas lights and music are a part of my Christmas
Another favourite memory is listening to my father read the Christmas story. I make sure to do that myself at Christmas now. My husband and I will usually go to a community carols or carols service at some point during the Christmas season as well.
Another favourite memory is the time off school and work ... and relaxing. Days of sleeping in. Lots of reading. Going cross-country skiing with my mother and brother. Doing puzzles and playing games with my father. Most Christmases, I attempt to recapture something of that and this coming Christmas season is no different.
It has already started with this weekend. We have this weekend off from all the things. This is our first weekend with nothing planned since the end of August!! 3.5 months!!
Today, I slept in, listened to Christmas music, spent a couple hours in the garden, did some more decorating, and coloured.

Good Saturday!
Friday was a success. Relaxing, fun, and expensive (but planned for).
No drama! GD's court date got postponed. Her dress came in. Was suppose to be for a Christmas party, but now she will wear to her Great grandmother's funeral and her court date. Her car is fixed. I bought the stuffs on my list plus more. Great food and a few adult beverages. Slept really well!
Carol Hugs held tight!
HeatherUK i just saw something about removable stickies to keep kittens from knocking down items. Will be investing in some! DH just bought me blown glass irises in a vase. Will share pictures after Christmas. The first flowers he bought me were irises.
Christmas is hard for lots of folks. Remember to be nice to yourself!
Lots of love and many hugs!

Heather ~ Please tell me how you make your stuffing balls. They look very interesting. I think I see some raisins poking out. I would love to try something new other than my Southern cornbread dressing that Paula Deen makes.
Also, you are contributing a lot of food to the feast. Do you find it difficult to get it all to your son's house. When we went to Daughter-in-Law's moms for TG, I worried about getting what I brought safely inside.
Machka ~ You had some good suggestions for Debbie's Christmas week. I think cooking is what she loves to do so she will probably continue to do so!
MO ~ Your mom's bedroom in the nursing facility is so pretty! I like the tree and the Christmas bed covers.

Hey guys,
Regarding holiday celebrations: I'm sure y'all have figured this out already, but much like Thanksgiving, I feel as if I've graduated from Christmas, and I just don't have to do it anymore. I make sure the grandkids get presents from us, and the rest just is what it is. My kids wouldn't have gotten presents if I hadn't had all the stuff left over from the craft fair. They're grown, we don't expect anything from them, so it all works out. For us, anyway. Not sure how they feel about it.
I don't stress over Christmas, and we don't go to parties, and I don't yearn for feelings from years past as so many of you do because I don't have good memories from my childhood Christmases. There was usually some kind of fight going on, and the same with visiting my mother as an adult. I was home for Christmas exactly twice during the last years of her life, and both times turned into a brawl, started as often as not by one or more of the people my brothers had either married or spawned. She and my father divorced 22 years before her death, so I can't blame those on him!
No, my birth family and their get just did not deal well with family occasions, didn't matter whether it was a holiday or funeral. One of the many reasons I don't go to Texas now that Mama's gone. Asked Corey why he wasn't interested in Christmas, but he just felt it was always done for the kids, and with them gone, and me uninterested, he was more than happy to let it go. All that said, I do use the occasion to buy him or the two of us a few things that are on sale, and as I said, he bought me one big present, as well. Just an excuse to be good to each other that we gladly indulge in.
Tracey - Yarn is terribly expensive if you want anything with any softness that isn't harsh to the touch. I love the yarn I've used for these last three afghans, but figured it out in my head, and between the yarn and the shipping for the last two, it cost me $125 for each afghan. That doesn't even account for the countless hours spent crocheting them. Fabric is also not cheap, which is why I go to the thrift store and buy sheets and curtains and other fabrics that are a tenth of what I'd pay for them in a store new. So for anyone buying anything handmade, don't forget that the crafter is paying much more for materials than six years ago.
Carol, Barbie, Vicki, and anyone else who went and peeked at my goimagine site, thank you for the lovely words. It's a joyous thing for me, this, while still being scary. But it's kind of how I live a lot of my life. Feel the fear, and then do it anyway.
Mo - Love that quilt on your mama's bed.
Regarding husbands: I'm so sorry so many have had a tough year. It hasn't been completely shiny for me and Corey, though it doesn't sound like much to someone else, I'm sure. I had to remind him a month or so ago that I need to hear "I love you" from him, and he had stopped saying it. I know he feels it, but hearing it MATTERS to me. And since it does, I make sure to let him know that it does...
I'm not asking him to say something that he doesn't feel, just to express what he does feel. He was genuinely surprised that he had stopped. However, the man defaults to silence over sound at all times, perhaps because his job is so noisy almost every minute of the day. I prefer sound over silence, and need the words. I am literally not the type of person to "suffer in silence," so I say so. He can't read my mind, so I tell him.
Rainy outside and chilly, but not freezing, thank goodness. I've been stopping and writing a few words here and there for two hours now, so this, as usual, went on longer than expected. The dryer is bumping and clanking with jeans and dryer balls.
Probably kind of sad, the triumph I feel when all nine dryer balls are still in the dryer after I've pulled out the clothes. And yes, I do have nine, as I didn't feel like storing half of them. And yes, I do count them every time. Even weirder, they were made with wool from sheep from Machka's part of the world, where they seldom have dryers in their houses! 😽😹😂
Love y'all,

I would ordinarily not have objected but I was driving (because he is not allowed to drive for six months for medical reasons) and had just stayed in the cold car with the dog for two and half hours without access to a toilet and the dental work had just cost over a thousand dollars. Also, stopping required that I take route home that I don't like. I told Jake that next week when we have to go town to pick up library books that are on hold, we will stop for take out on the way home.

Grandmallie: That could be a shocker! You must still be adjusting to the idea!
I am not doing gifts under the Christmas this year. I gave my son and DIL a cash gift so they could purchase something they want for their house. I am enjoying the Christmas tree lights.
I got involved with the news and stayed up too late and missed knitting class. Sigh. I hate that. My knitting is getting better. But as someone said the price of yarn is notable. I am knitting a dish towel..3 different colors. I paid 6.00 for the pattern...and won't even say what I paid for the yarn! It is an expensive dish towel!
And having a puppy dog around yarn..well he is as bad as a cat might be! And he took hold of the needles and was trying to chew them!
I have lost weight, but am so hungry now that I have ordered a meal delivered. I feel too hungry too drive!
I don't mind the cold, but I wish the sun would come out a little more!
I joined a writing club and they are meeting today, but I still have not been added to the drop box to see the writings. So they will be discussing writings, I have not read. So I guess I won't go. Probably next month!

No pressure or stresses here as long as Mars the Leash Loving Boss of the House gets his daily Cat Advent Calendar treat. He has a new squeeky catnip Santa toy stashed inside the Snoopy dog house, which he tugs on to our mutual enjoyment. Other than my usual daily pleasures like sunny days and working sporting events, I've got cards mailed out and a photo calendar designed for N. He spends Christmas at home in New Hampshire and his daughter flies up to celebrate with him.

BIG THANK YOU to those who sent me cards. I keep them all and start the next years' holiday season by re-reading the good wishes previously received.
Stay well, friends. I second many of the suggestions about graduating out of holidays that trigger family drama and stupid stress. You deserve better. Step into your power and make it a beautiful holiday for you! We can do this.
