WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR FEBRUARY 2025

Machka, Thank you for sharing the clutterbug link. I am a cricket. I'm not sure what Jake would have scored but he was seriously clutter blind and his piles and drawers of stuff were a challenge for me.
About taxes. A few years ago I wrote a long document for Jake about what I gather and do to prepare information to send to the accountant. Things have changed a lot since the days when we had a farm and then later several other side hustles. Now we own our home and no longer itemize deductions nor keep track of business expenses including the use of part of our home for business purposes. In Washington state there is no state income tax but a high sales tax and I routinely figured out how much sales tax we paid so it would be an itemized deduction; That required going through every receipt for every purchase during the year, writing it down and adding it up. I especially don't miss doing that.
I noticed the signs with Katla when she was last posting with us. Yes it was sad.
I had noticed some signs with Jake in the last months of his life. He was afraid of getting dementia and putting me in a difficult position. I ignored a lot of it because he'd been a bit forgetful since he had a stroke in 2003. When I found out the night he died that he had cancer in his brain, it didn't surprise me.
I read an article last night that said that one mistake people make is trying to clear clutter too quickly. I am motivated to get rid of a lot of stuff but too much of it is emotionally charged so going slowly is the best I can do. Slow and steady wins the race.

Heading up north for Jeffrey’s funeral today. That’s all. *sigh* Weather is absolutely perfect. Should be a beautiful drive. We had snow yesterday so the ground is a stunning, bright white and the sky is a brilliant blue. It’s like Jeff and God created it just for us.
Love and Blessings.

Hi,
My name is Cindy.
My plan is to have a healthier year.
Started back with calorie counting yesterday.
Had a good day and got some exercise in as well.
Hi, Cindy, welcome! We're glad you're here. Make sure to bookmark this thread, it's the small icon at the right side of the top of the page that looks white like this, and turns blue once you select it:
Glad you're here!

I did the Clutterbug test this morning. I am a
You’re A Butterfly!
Love visual abundance and organizational simplicity. You are a really visual person and for you, it’s out-of-sight, out-of-mind. You need visual, but fast and easy systems, like clear or wire bins and baskets and lots of hooks.
Thank you all for your kind words regarding my DMD. You reinforced my thoughts on the subject.
This morning, I had to put my DS in his place again. I think (regretfully) that he is back on drugs since he had to move out of his grandmother’s house. These two really pull me apart.
My eldest daughter called yesterday, We joke that she is my ‘normal’ daughter. And she is. She is married for 16 years, has a 14 yo son and a wonderful husband. She works full time and goes camping a lot in the summer. She helps me accept that my other two children’s problems are not my problem and I didn’t do anything to make them how they are now. Just talking to her makes me feel better. And no, We are friends as well as mother/daughter and understands how much the other two hurt me and stress me out.
I finished and sent my taxes yesterday. Used the free one that irs.gov provides. It only cost me $14 to do the state tax using the same online system. I can do that! I also found that I’m getting money back from the state. A lot more than I expected. That will help with my apartment search. I am so happy about that and DID NOT tell my DH how much we are getting back. Sad, but how I need to treat him if I want to save anything.
It’s allergy season here. Trees starting to pollinate. Messing with my breathing and sinuses. I can’t believe how much the nebulizer is helping me already. I must have needed that thing for a while!
Thought for today:
Why are pigs bad drivers?
Because they hog the road! 🐷
Love to all and have a great day!

Hi Cindy!
Barbie Decluttering can be an emotional roller coaster but I imagine even more so with the death of a loved one mixed in. My thought is if it has been in a drawer, box, closet, or tote for years, do I really need it? Even then there have been some items I am not there yet. DH did clear out some drawers in an antique dresser. I cleaned out a few things from the coat closet, the WII and all it's items which freed up a large drawer (just when I was looking for a place to put extra notebooks), a dresser drawer of kids colorbooks and craft items, a tote with placemats not used for past 8-10 years, and a bunch of baskets taking up space in my closet. So trip 2 of stuffs for daughter's garage sale. I haven't used WII in 10 yrs. Won't hook up to new tvs. Have DVDs if I get so inclined. Kittens nails clipped, new room area cleared up for most part. Have house walk/danced for 45 mins. Time to see what is next...

Machka - glad to see your DH's surgery is over. Crossing fingers for a successful outcome and good recovery. Your energy amazes me!
Meg - good to see you! Glad to hear your DH is doing well, crossing fingers for a successful surgery and easy recovery.
Rita - so glad you touched base with your eldest daughter, she sounds like a gem!! Good job on the tax refund. My DH was not a good money manager. I'd announce "we're getting a teensy bit back, thank goodness. I wasn't looking forward to having to pay this year!" no matter what the amount. So I didn't completely lie, I just fluffed up the truth a little some years.
Kylia - thank you for the information about the "healthiest weight" - I think that's good advice for any age. By the way, wish computer technology would advance enough that I could reach through this screen and pet your kitties and feel their purrs. I can't remember - did you say you'd had a cat/cats previously?
Dr. Matt posted an interesting video about the GLP-1 medications with reminders to keep up strength training and avoiding muscle loss, eating enough protein, etc. Had it been available 20 years ago when I was 40 pounds overweight, I probably would have tried it. I was in my early 50's then and desperate to get my 20-year-old body back. DUH.I got back on WW which helped, and I'm grateful that that cutting sugar and carbs way back is working for me now. I know for many people, these GLP-1 medications have been a valuable tool.
33F here and overcast.

Machka - So glad Rowan's surgery is done and hope his recovery is swift and painless. For both of you.
Rita - No shame in that game, honey. You do what you have to in order to keep both of you safe and happy. Can't be easy on you, though. Glad your eldest understands about the other two. I think about the differences in my two quite frequently. Once they're adults, though, it's on them, no longer on you. No matter what they say about how you raised them, they all had choices, and your oldest made better choices.
My best friend and I had a LONG conversation about just the topic of yesterday. So very few people seem to think about the "and then what?" The ability to think about the possible consequences of a given action only comes with maturity. I wasn't worth killing when I was in my late teens and early 20s, and genuinely, not too bright about money consequences until well into my 30s. But some people just never seem to be able to develop that ability to consider the consequences of their actions.
Anyway, Corey's made breakfast sausage for brunch, he'll be popping back into the kitchen in a bit. Right now, he's still putting drywall mud on in the small bathroom. Me, I would have closed in the other side as well, so I only had to mud it all and sand it all once, but he and I are very different people in how we do these things. We reach the same end result, so I've stopped sweating it. I just won't necessarily watch it.
I've written one video script, will tape it tomorrow, cut and upload on Tuesday for Thursday drop schedule. Seems to work well for me at this point. I would like to get a week or two ahead of this curve, and will work toward that for the rest of February. None of it is dated material, so shouldn't matter.
Hope it is or was a lovely Sunday for you,
Love from Arkansas, where the temp is going down, not up. Back in the freezer/refrigerator for the next few weeks. Ah well, spring is coming. It always does!
Love y'all,

Morning all
Feeling a bit better.. we got about 4 inches of snow last night,no biggie..
Im going to get Alfies stuff together and take him over tomorrow afternoon4 -
Thank you for the link to the Clutterbug quiz. I am essentially a cricket.
Decluttering is most definitely a slow process but one I am more inclined to now that I'm getting older. I absolutely have to get rid of the stuff we are holding or have become the custodians of or my son will be overwhelmed when his dad and I die. Our church is having another garage sale to benefit missions this summer and I hope to be a big contributor!
Cindy ... welcome!
It is snowing here near Buffalo so I'm making beef stew and biscuits for dinner. We'll watch the Super Bowl now that our quarter back is MVP and, of course, we'll be hoping the Chiefs lose.

Hello ladies!
I miss Katla, as she was a Pacific Northwesterner gal like me. I liked when she talked about her houseboat home and the birds she liked to watch. I wish I would have gone and visited her when we lived on the coast in Oregon, as we would sometimes drive to Portland on highway 30 which passed by her "HalloweenTown" town. I admit I was relieved to know she was in the same facility as her husband. Could sense her frustration not being able to log into her old account on here.
It reminded me of my husband's liver journey when one day, while I was at work, he spent the whole day trying to quietly figure out how to use his computer. By the time I got home he was frantic, little did I know he was having an "ammonia coma" and he wasn't himself. I told middle son to race to the store and buy a banana, thinking it had something to do with his potassium. Then I thought a bath might help, but when I went in to check on him, he was sitting in cold water. None of these stories he remembers. When a liver stops working well, it pretty much affects your whole mind and body. I remember because I went thru a traumatic event, also as much as he did, surviving a liver transplant. I don't ever want to take his present health for granted.💖👍🏼
Last night I was able to connect with youngest sailor son. Its so hard with the time difference in Japan, sometimes! He is doing well. Its still a waiting game, with him in medical hold status. Its been since November. He arrived in July, his ship in dry dock, had COVID, had HF & Mouth disease, in quarantine. He really suffered until he was officially diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Now he's officially off the ship, its moved out to sea, and a new batch of dry dock sailors moved into the barge berthing. Ships done their paperwork, medical has done their paperwork, so its waiting for the dept that grants transfers, and changes in orders. I can sense his frustration in starting his life already, getting disability from the Navy hopefully, and just living his life. I tried to give him some perspective in that he's in Japan, his job is fairly easy hours, no difficult sea duty, he's getting paid, and is infusions are suppressing his symptoms. All good things. He's still so young at 26 but he's dealt with a lot.
I'm still struggling with this darn cold. Then to add to the nice sinus pressure and stuffiness, a couple vertigo swirls last night. Ugh! Just enough so my eyeballs hurt, and head and neck are achy. I am thankful the vertigo doesn't really affect me during the day though. I need some more cold medicine. I am going to get the sleep inducing fizzy alka seltzer plus tablets. I am at war with my nasal cavity!! Bring in the heavy artillery! I might even buy Nyquil! I just take a swig to coat my throat. Not the whole cap full. I will buy some eucalyptus scented bath bubbles and soak in a bath tonight.
Everyone have a nice Sunday.💖👍🏼
Hugs
Rebecca

Regarding dementia - if interested, check out the article and NY Times article link. It doesn't support the amyloid plaque hypothesis and questions the research and use of Alzheimer's medications. Food for thought here.
https://foodforthebrain.org/fraud-in-alzheimers-research-exposed/?mc_cid=f5003f2cbd&mc_eid=ae7de64553
Also, note there's a cognitive function test on the Food For the Brain link. It cannot be done on a phone; only a tablet or computer. Takes 30 uninterrupted minutes, with no distractions.
https://foodforthebrain.org/the-cognitive-function-test/
I just took the test - a couple areas popped out where I needed improvement, and they weren't a surprise to me.
They encourage retaking it every 6 months to see if suggested changes are helping. I think it was good for me get a baseline, especially with my mom's dementia - and her dad's as well.

Cindy ~ Welcome! Lisa gave a very good lesson in how to bookmark the posts so you can easily find it!
Lanette ~ That is interesting that there is a cognitive test for memory loss. I was going to take it, but, I did not wish to supply my email information. So, I'll just mosey along and hope for the best.
Clutterbug Test ~ After reading the comments some of you have made, I have decided that YES most of us have traits that can be found in all areas. At first I thought I was a Bee and the test said I was a Cricket. But, I can get lazy and have piles of things that need to be tended to and just don't (one of those is housework...vacuuming and mopping and dusting). Guess that would be in the Butterfly category.
Rebecca ~ Hope your cold gets better! With all the weather changes we have had I can see why so many of us have been ill. My son, grandson, and granddaughter have all suffered with the flu. The grands each missed several days of school that has to be made up. My SnL was in the hospital for over a week with pneumonia.
Allie ~ From what you said, are you sending Alfie to Tom to stay?
I survived going to the bridal shower yesterday. We got there at 2 PM and didn't get through until almost 6 PM. There were a LOT of guests, a lot of food, games, etc. and probably around 50 presents to be opened. I was exhausted by the end and I imagine the hostess was glad when it was over! But, I am sure it was good for me to get out of my usual routine and leave the house to be with people.

If anyone wants a little more background on the Food For the Brain cognitive testing, last year Dr. John Campbell interviewed Patrick Holford who was one of the founders. Holford explains that everyone who takes the test is contributing to studying the factors that contribute to and/or reduce the incidence of dementia.
Campbell takes the test and his results are discussed in this video. Holford presents information about supplements and various factors to protect the brain. 50 minutes in length.
It might be a good idea to watch this video before taking the test, though not necessary.
I was happy to see New Optimum Nutrition for the Mind is finally available on Amazon. When I first watched the video above, the original edition was only available in the UK. I just ordered it.

Carol- it all depends we are trying a 2 week trial period.. they had him for 6 months when I had my heart surgeries ,so he has been there for extended periods.
They both as do I want whats best for Alfie..
Tom is retired and has the time to walk him and spoil him ,and he is a fantastic doggie dad.
I want Alfie to enjoy his years and when they go on vacation or anytime I need a doggie snuggle ,I can bring him here or visit him there..
I have thought long and hard..we all want what is best for the crazy little guy.
Didn't get to sleep until 2:30 this morning which was bizzare.. and back to Delia watching tomorrow.4 -
Happy Sunday Funday.
I'm a Ladybug. I love being surrounded with beauty, light and minimal stuff in the rooms. I've studied feng shui and try to keep chi energy flowing without impediments. But my closets and drawers could use more frequent overhauls. Ironically, just yesterday I came home from Costco with 4 new bins to utilize in my coat closet. I have that closet and my hobby room closet on my to-do list. Never ends.
Machka and Lisa: Add Mars to the cadre of cats who eschews fancy toys. His favorite is paper towel tubes (not t.p.), string (the more textured the better), and pinecones which he picks up on our walks. I'll never have spotless floors thanks to his floof and toy debris, but he is such a sweet and interesting companion, it's worth having to sweep and vacuum every day.
Meg: Prayers going up for your DH. Missya. Hope you'll keep popping in.
Beth: I'm with you re the Chiefs.
I met Katla and her DH on three separate occasions, including a visit to their home on the Columbia River. Good memories. I hope they are both getting compassionate care.
Lanette: I was going to to take "Food for the Brain" test, but went to check on their foundation on Charity Navigator, the best watchdog for non profit sector I know. It is not listed, which a big red flag for me, a former career non-profit executive. There may be some perfectly plausible explanations, but I would proceed with caution.
I'm going through activity doldrums. I have the time, space and need to do more exercise, but find myself wimping out. I hit the gym only about 2x this week, and the exercises I do there are the PT routines ortho gave me for knee and hip flexors. Not enough. Now if Pip starts talking 'boot', I may have to get off my duff for at least a 30 min walk or sumthin'.
Stay well, friends. We can do this.

Food for the Brain Foundation is located in the UK, maybe that's why they aren't listed on "Charity Navigator". I found this on the UK charity list website (hope the link works) and they are listed as an educational charity -https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/en/charity-search/?p_p_id=uk_gov_ccew_onereg_charitydetails_web_portlet_CharityDetailsPortlet&p_p_lifecycle=0&p_p_state=maximized&p_p_mode=view&_uk_gov_ccew_onereg_charitydetails_web_portlet_CharityDetailsPortlet_regId=1116438&_uk_gov_ccew_onereg_charitydetails_web_portlet_CharityDetailsPortlet_subId=0
According to the Food for the Brain Foundation website, they do provide some services in England, Wales and Scotland (for a fee) for programs/zoom classes and additional testing for blood markers such as homocysteine which they feel are important.
But payment is not required to take the cognition test or access articles they have on the website which are free. They don't appear to be a 501c3 charity like Girl Scouts of America. According to the Foundation website, they accept donations which help cover the cost of building the database and providing educational material.
Their website (in an earlier post) has a lot of information if anyone wishes to look further.
Since our group here has been discussing dementia over the past several days, I just thought the articles might be informative to some of you and wanted to share, again, if anyone was interested. I hope you gals don't feel I'm pushing something here that might be suspicious - if you don't feel comfortable, certainly don't do it!
Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for those who said hello and welcomed me! Also, thanks for giving me a tip on how to mark this page so I could come back to it quickly. 😊
My husband and I went on a short hike today.
We were watching TV after dinner and I caved a little with not me measuring out food and just munching.
Little by little, I will overcome these bad habits that I learned throughout my lifetime.5 -
Stat for the day-
Housecleaning etc- 3hrs 50min 48sec, vacuum. Dust, refill hummingbird feeders, laundry fold/put away, clean bathroom lighting, trim front plants, wipe down back patio chairs, change bedsheets and duvet cover, etc= 1057c
I was in first place for a minute. I just noticed someone is now like 250 miles ahead of me. It’s still early, oh well.

Lanette-I find the information you share to be interesting. I also check out the sites before going very far into them (I tend to be suspicious). Thanks for doing the extra research and letting us know about it.
Meg-good to hear from you. Hope things continue to move in a positive direction.
Well, all of the chatter regarding decluttering got me motivated. I am a butterfly. My goal today was to clean bathroom well, including shifting some stuff out of the closet so I could use a free standing shelf there in another room and move smaller one in there. Got rid of a bunch of old cleaning stuff. Also used electrical brush to clean shower tile. I am slowly making progress.
Another UTI has shown up. I have been feeling rather tired and thought it was just from being out of town, etc. Started standing dose of antibiotic tonight.
I'm with Beth and Rori on the game tonight. The Eagles are playing well but there is another half to go.
Rebecca-most of the folks around here are getting colds that seem to last forever. Who knows if it's RSV or some other virus. Whatever it is called looks to be pretty miserable.
Well, I may head to bedroom and watch second half from there, or fall asleep before the end!
Take care all,

This morning’s frog bite, reconciled checking account and actual spreadsheets, found quite a few checks not entered in actual so would have been missed for medical deductions. Then had to dash to prep fellowship salad and shower before leaving for Gold Beach.
Ginny, yes in a care facility that also housed her husband but in different areas, likely due their different physical and memory needs.
Lisa, Carol, Heather, Michele, Lanette, Kylia, Machka Flea, Sue, Terri, Barbie, Rori, no response yet to the text. Will try calling tomorrow during business hours, tho’ afraid there will be no good news to learn.
Rebecca thanks for reminding me that Katla lived in “Halloweentown” before moving east to be near her daughter.
Machka and Lisa, well done on the consistent exercise!
Kay, no mug of pens on my desk, but vitamins lined up in a row on the kitchen counter. AND I would way rather spend a little time putting things away where I can put my hands on them quickly at need.
Kylia, yup, my spices are alphabetized. SMH. Drinkware I use is on a lower shelf, that Joe uses and I don’t are in another cabinet with coffee mugs near the sink. Hmm there is at least a shelf’s worth, or maybe two, that could be donated. . . Focus Barbara! This month it’s the OMG room, not the kitchen! What are you selling the wii for? Wouldn’t mind having a spare…
Meg, so very good to see your smiling face again. Prayer said for your DH’s March 8 surgery.
Barbie “one thing at a time” is the only way to get anything done
Machka back when I worked in an office, I told people “re-keying is against my religion.”
Welcome @Garden875 Cindy! Logging food and moving more are key and little by little is the way. You can do this!
Carla safe travels, home and back again.
Carol I could not tell you when the last time was that I mopped a floor. And OH the thick layer of dust on everything. Ugh! If it weren’t for the Roomba you wouldn’t be able to walk on the floor for the spruce needles and dog hair. Think it was Lisa who once said something like “Dusting? Tried it once, but then it needed doing again, so I didn’t.”

Got home a bit before 5pm, went over and walked MIL's dog and put some of the food I got from helping at the food program in her fridge/freezer. One thing I got was a whole duck. I have never cooked one. Dh loves the Chinese roasted duck so I grabbed one and will try cooking it this week. I love helping there but not getting up so early. I woke up at 3:30 and mom's alarm went off 15 min later. My Fitbit said I walked 2 1/2 miles, all while I was in the same room- A LOT of bagging and moving so many pounds of produce. Some of the guys were slacking a bit , not keeping the produce up front so the people could get them so I was doing all of it by myself which was a bit hard(HEAVY 50 lbs of carrots-went through 8 bags of them) was my main job.
Found the seeds at mom's- she said she looked everywhere, that they were not there, that someone must have walked off with them. It took a while but I finally found them yesterday afternoon.
As I was starting to cook dinner for the two of us- her neighbors stopped by, walked in and asked "What are we having for dinner"- thankfully I had brought two packs of rock cod so there was enough. This is the same couple that did the same thing Christmas eve. Mom was ok with it. She likes the company.
He does help mom often so it is ok, just unexpected.
Went out to see my aunt(dad's only surviving sibling of the ten kids) Had a great visit with her. Picked mom up at church- I had dropped her off on my way to my aunts..
Came back to mom's, made us a nice lunch then I packed up and headed home.
Have to be up early in the morning- dh has an appointment at the oral surgeon at 7am to have a molar pulled(failed root canal that is constantly infected).
I will take care of the dog while he is there then pick him up and bring him home. Let him sleep- Hope to get some things done that I didn't get done over the weekend.
Going to grab a shower and head for bed.
Have a wonderful Monday Ladies
good night

Today ...
- Just about finished my husband's laundry. The last bit is hanging on the line.
- Cleaned the kitchen & did the dishes
- Cleaned out the fridge - removed the out of date stuff and washed out the very icky veggie drawer
- Went for a bicycle ride
- Finished up dinner preparations - my chicken-veg curry with rice, Naan and salad. The chicken-veg curry was pretty good although I prefer a bit more spice. My husband does not like spice, so it suited him.
And now I'm going to work for a couple hours.

This work of art reminds me of Clifford, a big red dog in a Children's book series. Good memory taking my friend to MIA.

My son rang this morning with lots of (optional) appointments for minding the girls. All kinds of reasons, but mainly half term and funeral and memorial service arrangements. He is organising the memorial service, called 'Celebration of Life '. He is also reading at the funeral.
Tomorrow we are staying on from our usual Bea pick up, so they can both go to the Parents Evening at the school. Then my son can take us home.
We've missed them recently because Bea was sick, so we are not up to date with anything. So we are very happy to help out wherever we can.
I'm loving my new bottom fitted sheet, which is 400 count. The old one was far too tight and I always broke a nail trying to force it on. Drove me nuts! This one is soooooo smooth! I've also bought some new soft pyjamas in navy. Haven't worn them yet, but I've tried them on and they seem v comfortable. It's a thin, silky, t shirt material.
My walking upstairs is still improving.I want to be able to do it without hanging onto the banister. I do that with the cups of tea in the morning, but it's one legged.
John's ear seems much better. I have a filling that needs replacing, so I must make an appointment. That tooth has been a problem for decades.
G is off to Madeira tomorrow for a week. I hope she enjoys it. We had 10 days there in February, probably 20 years ago. Loved it.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx3 -
Morning my chickens,
Sue - I kept meaning to say and forgetting that it was such a pleasure to see you having a lovely day out with your friend. I learned that there's such a place as Leavenworth in Washington state, and a sleigh ride sounds absolutely lovely and fun. Cold, but fun!
Back to the grind this morning for Corey, who's off to work once more. Just got my "good morning" call from him. My only plans outside the usual chores involve driving to a local farm to pick up a dozen eggs. They're $5 a dozen there, when they're nearly $6 a dozen at Walmart.
Had to contact them on Facebook and "reserve" a dozen eggs every other week, but hopefully that will keep us in yummy eggs this spring at what would have been an outrageous price a year ago, but now it's looking pretty good!
The funny part is that she wouldn't send me the address or directions for the place until I'm on my way to it - they sell "by appointment only." This should be interesting. I feel like a spy!
Right now, just laundry, getting my meds done for the week, exercise, shower, tape a video, maybe work on the current piece before I go to my egg appointment at noon. Probably won't get to the bag I'm working on, feeling a little too pulled-in-all-directions kind of morning. No worries, there's time.
Hope it's a grand day,
Love y'all!

@margaretturk I love Clifford, the big red dog series! Thanks for sharing that statue.
@LisaInArkansas, I am glad you found some fresh eggs at a more reasonable price near you! I can appreciate your point of view on this matter. My husband and I were talking recently about possibly looking for local eggs to see what the price might be versus the grocery store.
Wishing everyone a wonderful day!3
