Do you want to drink LESS? Completely stop or just cut back?

Cutting back can mean ONE less drink a day, week or month. Or deciding to drink on only weekends or at special occasions.

On the flip side, maybe you could use this nudge to finally get to that completely sober point and be all in-alcohol free.

Join us in drinking LESS (whatever that means for you) as we continue to support and learn from each other.

    β€’Getting Started or Starting Over.
β€’Some people find it easier to set small attainable goals at the beginning to help boost confidence.
β€’If you have been drinking daily the first days will be some of the hardest and drinking again will feel like a cure but it delays the relief that only time can provide.
β€’There will always be a reason to delay the start/restart of your journey.
β€’For those ready to commit to being alcohol-free permanently, the videos on YouTube by Craig Beck will help. He also has a program you can join.
β€’You may experience mood swings and anxiety during your first two weeks. It is suggested you try and focus on the benefits of your goal.
β€’Cravings are said to last only 6 minutes, so find something to distract you like arming yourself with alternatives: tea, mock-tails, activities, etc.
β€’You may find that filling the time you drink with other activities like exercise or hobbies can be a helpful distraction.
β€’If you find them tempting try and avoid events/outings that will have drinking for a time.
β€’Don't let pride or shame keep you from asking for the help you need.
β€’Sometimes talking it out or posting your thoughts/feelings/struggles may help you work things out for yourself.
β€’It is okay that you don't always have all the answers.
β€’Some days will be easier than others.
β€’You may have initial/increased sugar cravings.
β€’You should never take a day that you have lived up to your goals for granted.
β€’Celebrate the smaller victories too. Less alcohol is still less alcohol even if your goal was zero at that moment.
β€’Once you begin sticking to your goals for one day to many days you should believe you are capable of the same and more because you are.
β€’Failure is not giving in and drinking. Failure is to stop trying to accomplish your goals.

    Life with Less Alcohol:
    β–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺ
β€’It can be helpful to educate yourself with books and web research (Some suggested books and links listed below).
β€’There is no benefit to comparing yourself to others because this is a personal journey.
β€’You may often feel conflicted. You will know that there are numerous real benefits to sticking to your goal while at the same time think that alcohol is an important part of stress relief, relaxation, celebration, etc.
β€’You may feel punished by not drinking or drinking less but that feeling usually fades with time.
β€’Sometimes drinking less or quitting will strain friendships that centered around alcohol.
β€’Having a list of reasons to stick to your goals handy for yourself can be helpful. Some lists have included remembering how bad it feels to have a hangover, excess/unwanted calories, having a racing heart during the night, sleeplessness, anxiety, and depression.
β€’It is a good idea to have a plan for how you might deal with various tempting scenarios before engaging in a social situation.
β€’Self-Reflection is an important part of the journey. Once we figure out why we drink we can hopefully use that information to form new habits and make better and more mindful decisions.
β€’Sometimes doing something nice for yourself like a little reward for a success makes the journey easier.
β€’You will see many helpful suggestions and ideas that work for some people. However, finding what tactics work for you may involve some trial and error.
β€’It is not uncommon for certain activities that were once combined with alcohol to trigger temptation. Many have said that outdoor activities in warmer weather made alcohol very tempting.
β€’Many that have spent time with no alcohol after drinking again realized that it doesn't enhance experiences like they once believed it did. Some have said they no longer like the taste.
β€’Don't forget how sticking to your goal has made your life better and remember it to motivate you again if you fall off your path.
β€’If you begin drinking daily again whether planned like a vacation or unplanned you may once again face a struggle to get it under control.
β€’For some people it is easier to not drink than it is to moderate drinking. Others have found moderating impossible.

β€’We drink to avoid anxiety in social situations.
β€’We drink to avoid making decisions about not drinking.
β€’The Takeaway on Avoidance, our problems don't go away if we avoid them. We need to learn to face them.
β€’Having a clear head makes our problems seem much smaller.

How to Be Kind to "Tomorrow You":
    β–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺβ–ͺ
β€’Instead of lumbering with guilt, headaches, and poor nutrition hangovers in the morning, Think of think how nice it would be not to feel that way tomorrow.
β€’Worry about "me" and don't let "tomorrow Me" feel awful.
β€’Instead of thinking alcohol is something nice to have *now*, think of *NOT drinking* as something nice we can do for the person we are when we awaken in the morning.
β€’Do you bank calories for a festive occasion? (Handy tactic) We can bank a good mood for when we wake up.
β€’We need to have sympathy for "Tomorrow You" and be kind to her/him.
β€’Don't look at a day without alcohol as a punishment for being bad or having no willpower.
β€’Not drinking is a lovely, sympathetic gesture towards the person we are now, and whom we will wake up as.
β€’You’d be kind to a stranger. Be kind to "Tomorrow You".

@tobinross You should have no problem losing that 0.8 lbs. I wouldn't be surprised if you meet that by next week. Keep up the good work!

    1 A

Eh. I started March off with wine. The weekends have been getting me lately, but I'm pretty confident that I can go AF from now until we leave for the cruise. We're staying with friends closer to the port on Friday night, so we'll probably have dinner and drinks followed by 7 days of debauchery. I probably need to commit to a plan of no day drinking at least some of the days

March goal is at least 50% AF. That's doable even with the cruise, I think, as long as I don't prolong the agony when we return. d

@globalhiker I definitely need to up my fruit consumption. I prefer veggies to fruit.
@SurferGirl1982 We're all rooting for you!
@MissMay Thank you for keeping this going and you are doing AMAZING!!
    @Michieb125 Great February!
@Itladyee I look forward to seeing your goals this month and killing it!

@Michieb125 Great weekly target! If I could do it...that's exactly how I would do it...5 AF days and 2 A's. Keep it up πŸ‘

I will say it’s harder to get that first NA day in when I’ve been drinking a lot for a few weeks! It’s going to take forever, it seems, to detox my poor liver! Haha!

I feel this! I'm struggling too, and it's getting that first day back that is so difficult! Today, I have planned NO wine since I'm 0 for 3 so far  I need these next 3 AF days before we take off for our vacation!

@Womona @chicbuc Welcome to the club! I too have been drinking a lot for a few weeks. Getting that Day 1 is difficult.

I went gambling yesterday. So I had my husband take me to the ATM. On the way, I mentioned that I should probably get a half-pint so I wouldn't run out of whiskey. He agreed! I ended up buying a fifth. He's been pretty helpful. But I know he gets tired of having to get dressed and go to the liquor store at 9am every morning. So I'm 0 for 4!

To add insult to injury, my doctor's office sent me a message last Friday. My doctor wanted me to recheck my thyroid (lab test). I messaged back and said that I would go by the lab sometime this week when we went into town. So, now I'm under more stress, because somehow I need to get to the lab. I intend to go on Thursday. There's actually a new clinic just a couple of miles away. So, I guess I'm going to have to do my best. Just white knuckle it and get it done. And come home and have a drink. Sometimes I wish my doctor would just leave me alone. You know...don't call me...I'll call you!

As far as the gambling. I walked in with $400. I was doing good. Got into a bonus and cashed out at $762. I put the ticket in my wallet along with about $300 worth of 20's. I then played another game and cashed out at $350. And I still had a butt load of 20's in my wallet. Good time to go home, right? Not! Well, I still left $40 up, drank a few beers and tipped the clerk (it happened to be her birthday). When will I learn? I should have left when I had around $1200. I could always have gone back today or tomorrow. Oh, well! At least I didn't lose!

@itladyee It looks like you're off to a good start this month.

The casino that I go to isn't a large casino that most people think of. They are run by the Oregon lottery. Each establishment is only allowed to have six machines. But I think they are going to increase it to 12 machines soon. The only requirement to have the machines is that you sell food and some form of alcohol. They are everywhere…bars, restaurants, delis, and just stores that that is their primary business (basically small casinos).

The place that I usually go to is about 75 yards away from my house and a friend of mine works there. They have the machines, keno, scratchers, beer, soft drinks, and a small selection of food items. Being so close, it can be tempting at times.

@chicbuc Sorry to hear you're sick. But, congrats on your AF day!

I went to play the slots again yesterday. I did good. I walked out $400 ahead πŸ™‚ It's kind of coincidental, but while I was playing, I was sitting next to a man that told me that he quit drinking 22 years ago. I asked him how he did it. And he said, "One day at a time".

I think I've made my decision about my drinking. I really want to be a non-drinker. But I'm going to aim for 90 days AF to see the difference with how I feel. I'm tired of poisoning my body. And, it's getting hard again to function properly. I had alcohol in the house again this morning. But I'm going to try my hardest to be AF tomorrow.

I bought several Kindle books about drinking and a couple other books (easier for me to read than regular books). I just started to read one. It's the Craig Beck one, "Alcohol Lied to Me". I've just started it, but I think I will enjoy it.

@SunnyDays930 I hope you get feeling better. I completely know the feeling of not being able to moderate!

@globalhiker That's a very nice gesture…saying prayers for us all. I think a lot of us could use a prayer. I know that I certainly do!
