    Thank you Mike.
He is back at home, and things are settling down more.
He is still sick, but at least home to recover.
As for my back, i walked a lot, to at least get some movement in.
And i did workout last monday and going at it again tomorrow.

But i feel like i lost so much strenght. Did some deadlifts monday...3 sets of 8 at a weight that used to be my warmup...But patience and time to get back at where i was

Been a while since I checked in... Gus, you're not alone. I think I've done two lifting / gym sessions in the last month. Been dealing with my dad's weakness as well (for almost a week, I was going to their apartment and getting him out of bed and fed in the mornings, settled at dinner, and then to bed in the evening). Plus Mom got covid and was sick as hell and then gave it to me. So I was dealing with that WHILE trying to help them.

Work hit hard too, with a few 12h days thrown in the mix, and now my eldest has the Vid and I'm still recovering.

It has just been a royally brutal month. Though... I did lose my appetite, sense of smell and taste, so i think I'm down almost ten pounds. LOL
    #silverliningsIguess

The good news is that Dad has improved enough that I don't have to go there 3x a day, and Mom is doing better. I'm still exhausted and just... weary.

Life gets in the way of our fitness goals... but if I wasn't as fit as I was before life got in the way, I'm sure it would have been that much harder.

Keep pressing on, folks! It's worth it.

    ugh!
You have had a lot to deal with Sandy.
Glad your dad has improved enough that it gives you some rest as well

And totally agree on the last part, if things like this would have happened 15 years ago, i would be dulging in food for pitty, and not recover so fast.

In other news, i have cancelled my subscription for the gym for next year, so i can focus completely on my walking event and train for that.

I am afraid that otherwise, i would still spend my free time in gym, rather than walking outside.
So taking out the temptation and will restart the membership when i am done with the event in July.

There's a guy at my gym, one of the biggest, strongest lifters in the place. He was gone for a few weeks, figured he was on vacation somewhere. Turns out he'd been in a car accident which laid him up in the hospital for a week and two more weeks at home recovering. By the time I saw him, he had a couple small scars and was moving a little stiffly, but otherwise seemed fine.

According to his doctor, if he hadn't been in such great shape to absorb the impact, he would be either crippled or dead.

Just wrapped up 15 weeks of a cut, dropped 11 pounds in that time, with smaller waist and thighs but chest/arms stayed the same. Visually am not beach ready, so am thinking instead of doing a 3-month bulk followed by 3-month cut before next summer, I will do a 4-week Holiday feast and resume the cut come January, for a 5-month cut before summer, see what the extra two months can do, especially if I show a little more discipline and cut another 100-200 calories per day.

Looking good brother. I agree to hold off on the bulk. Maybe go to maintenance through the holidays, knowing youll indulge on the holidays. If I were you I’d consider running a slight deficit all the way to April or May.

Years back I injured both shoulders by being stupid on the bench press, avoided surgery, but forever after had limited range of motion. Fast forward a decade, I'm now teaching my son how to lift properly and safely, and of course he notes how my bench press stops with the bar several inches above my chest. He also made an observation which floored me, how the bar seemed lower on my warmup sets than on my working sets. Got me to thinking, self-analyzing my bar path, and I came to realize that over time I had unconsciously been creeping the bar higher on my sternum when the weights went up, since it felt more stable at my "limited" range.

So today I forced myself out of my comfort zone, intentionally moving the bar to hover lower on my sternum, and sought to lower the bar to make actual contact with my chest. Sure enough, I could get the bar to touch, where I had been convinced my range of motion would prevent it, and what's more there was zero discomfort. So for the rest of my bench press session I systematically increased the weight, fearing I would have to stop at a relatively light weight, like 30% of normal.

Completely floored me that I actually didn't start to have any issue until I got all the way up to 75%! And what's to say how much of that issue wasn't a combination of cumulative fatigue from all the sets leading up to it, plus the normal weakness of doing a familiar exercise in an unfamiliar way? My incline press similarly surprised me, working my way up to 62% of normal, not quite getting all the way down to my chest before encountering resistance to going any lower (an inch compared to six inches).

Bottom line is my work this past decade must have helped heal my shoulders more than I had realized, which is a great thing. The follow-on regret is how much more could've been done had I not convinced myself of a permanent limitation and instead kept working at it. But that's the past, it can't be changed. What I can do going forward is continue to work with this "true" bench press motion, systematically work my weights back up again. Who knows, maybe working through this larger range of motion will force parts of my chest previously ignored to join the party, resulting in bigger appearance, bigger strength, or both.

Who says you can't teach an old lifter new tricks? (Or for the cynic, it's never too late to stop lying to yourself.)

First time back here in a long time. It's ridiculous to say, but honestly - losing the MFP feed seemed to be the last thing holding me together. I really miss MFP. I'm on LoseIt, but I never log in, find it impossible to follow the feeds, and even though the logging portion is great, I just don't have that desire to check in regularly. I've lost the accountability and desire to keep fighting my desire to eat more than I burn.

I haven't been to the gym since May - mostly because it is slo-pitch ball season and we played 2 nights a week. Add a night at band practice, and a night getting my parents groceries, and it makes it tough for me to fit my regular workouts in. Ball is done now, and I'm recovering from the residual pain from playoffs and I WANT to get back at my lifting, find a way to get some cardio in, and maybe get rid of the extra fat that I've found along the way. I still have a small hint of abs, but not much…and I just feel so BLECH.

Anyways… just wanted to stop by, and see if anyone was still around, and if maybe (just maybe) MFP brought the newsfeed back. :( #wishfulthinking

Miss you all and hope you're faring better than me! (According to the Dad Bod thread, I know @kinetixtrainer2 sure is! haha - well done, sir!)

@KickassAmazon76 wonderful to hear from you again!

I'm still hanging on MFP, and this year have gone a whole new direction in one phase of life: losing weight again. I know, novel concept, losing weight on a losing-weight-site. But the first time I lost weight I was overweight in the not-healthy variety, and lost much of the weight down through cardio-only until I discovered a love of weightlifting, at which point I fully committed to lifting and gaining muscle, meaning my weight went back up. For years after, I just teetered at around the same weight, telling myself BMI didn't apply to weightlifters, yada yada yada.

But this year a switch flipped in my brain and I decided I could look more muscular if, instead of gaining bigger muscles, what if I lost the fat covering what I already have? Same advice I've given here on MFP to others, but never really took to heart for myself…until now. Happy to say that over the last year I'm now down 30lbs, and my BF% has dropped from 22% to 15%…and that was just at my last measurement, I've lost more weight since. Looking to get down to 169, which would not only give me a BMI of 25 for the first time in my adult life (post-college), but would also be a convenient 50lbs less than my all-time high. Looking forward to posting side-by-side comparison photos.

The best part is my gym numbers haven't suffered like I feared they would; if anything, they've gone UP! (Well, my bench press is down, but that's the only one.) Still hitting the gym 6 days a week (4 lifts, 2 cardio). Fitting into clothes I haven't worn in decades. (What's old is new, right?)

I'm glad I ran across your post! After months of inactivity in the thread, I had un-bookmarked it. Time to flag it once again.

That is so awesome!!! WAY TO GO! You've always been a go-getter (as long as I've known you) and I'm so glad to see that you're still pushing!

I, on the other hand, have found 30 pounds and none of it was good. I'm struggling with knee and ankle issues (thanks to baseball) and feel absolutely gross. I just started day 1 of logging my food and focusing on getting more water into me, but now I need to figure out some way to get back to a routine that involves healthy food choices, gym time, hydration… while still being able to care for my parents, my dependent kids, a new love interest, cats, home, blah blah blah… Oh and now I've added in a weekly band practice (because I sing in a classic rock band that gigs roughly every 6 weeks).

I suck so badly at finding balance. If I go hard on my health related goals, my house suffers. If I do both house and health, my relationship suffers. If I focus on all three, my sleep is sacrificed… There's got to be a way to make it happen, and I'm going to try, yet again to do it.

Part of me wants to be humble and post my "now" pics as confession, but they embarrass me too much. I am so disappointed in myself for letting things go this far. :(

You say "disappointed for getting things go this far…"

I say "you could have gone the rest of your life continuing out of control, but you saw the situation, made a conscious decision to do something about it, and have taken concrete steps towards improving your life."

None of us can be perfect forever; just ask my wife how many times I cycle between "great communicator" and "honey, you NEVER talk to me" on a regular basis! But what makes us perfect isn't our results, but our desire to be better. Stronger, leaner, more talkative, whatever. So long as we never give up, we are making progress. Or to parlay a little Rocky into the convo, "it's not how hard you hit, but how hard you can get hit and still keep punching", along with "don't matter how many times you're knocked down, as long as you stand up once more".

The good news is you've done this all before, you have the knowledge of what to do, along with the knowledge that you have done it in the past, meaning the future is also attainable. Sure, IRL pressures can complicate the actual process. But you got this, girl.

Hello Stranger (aka.. creator of my favorite lifting thread). They should bring back the feed. Made this place what it was. Thank you for the kind words. You strike me a “lifer” so even though you may get out of the groove for awhile you’ll always find your way back to the squat rack. 🤗

My 3 favourite people in lifting all on one page again!
Glad to see you all, i hate…no, not hate…YES HATE! that MFP sucks the way it does now.

I have been going to the gym reguarly again since may of this year, after my herniated disc since december.
Goal is to be there 3x a week again, but you know…life happens, and most weeks it's only twice, except for that horror hot week with 30+ celcius… i just have no energy on those day's, went once that week, and did everything i was supposed to do, but that was the coldest day that week with "only" 29 Ceclcius.

    @KickassAmazon76
I really feel you on this part. I have gained about 5-7 kg again since december. But have my plan written out again. Got this new (well since halfway June) 3 day lifting routine, and when i find the time, i try to kick in 1 extra day of cardio. I also walk outside a little more (the little steps add up eventually)

I also miss your IG reels and posts with you kicking *kitten* in the gym, so i hope you will post soon again.

    @nossmf
I love your inspiring words mate. Can i hire you as a coach?

@kinetixtrainer2 You are still doing the good work (didn't expect anything less from you)

GUS!!! So good to hear from you too!

I am trying to psych myself up for starting back at the gym come Monday. I'll strive for 2x a week. I just don't know what plan I want to follow and what goal I want to achieve. That's not usually a good thing for me, so I have a few days to figure shiz out.

I definitely DO miss moving that bar though, so I know my plan will include the three mains (bench, squat, deads). Maybe I'll use my old routine for a while until I figure out how I want to tweak it.

So glad to hear that you've been still hitting the gym regularly! I still have that note you left me on my wall a long time ago - it's taped to my office wall. <3

@KickassAmazon76 i feel you. It's great to see you back too. I have been working on the house (baseboards, painting, etc) every weekend for months, all while battling chronic pain with the glut/sciatica issues. Got up to the heaviest I had ever been. About 3 weeks ago, we said F it and joined a gym that opened a new location nearby. I only go 1 day on, 2 days off for now as I get myself re-acquainted with lifting. Been tracking food and making sure to hit at least my protein macro and I'm already down 14lbs and almost 2 belt loops, lol.

I'm hoping the strength work will help the sciatica. I can see small improvements.

Good to see @kinetixtrainer2 and @Minion_training_program and @nossmf still at it.

I'm using the hevy app to track sets. Anyone else use it? Any others they really like?

@KickassAmazon76 — you always were so inspiring and still are. Glad to have you back on MFP. I post every day on another thread, the "what was your workout today?" one, but stopped by when I saw this thread had nine new messages. Getting the band back together, I see. :)

Looking forward to some great progress pics in another few weeks. Don't feel like you have to post anything now, especially not if it's about punishing yourself. Maybe go the other direction: new start at the gym, so new workout attire?

Like @nossmf said, you know what to do and you have people here who will cheer you on. Let's go!!!

@nossmf, I think you'd make a great coach. Your regular posts on MFP about weight lifting and endlessly patient explanations about the mechanics of it all for the newbies helped me venture over to the weights side of the gym back in January and I've kept it up. That's meant the world to my health. So thank you.

You are welcome. Knowing I made a difference in somebody's life, that makes it all worth while. (I would be a high school teacher if I could survive on the salary offered. Instead, I'm the lead trainer of new hires for my engineering team, almost as good.) I think I could really enjoy being a personal trainer, but again I run smack into the salary thing, and the fact my income pays for the house and food for five other humans, so quitting what I do to pursue a passion is not in the financial cards…yet…

I am actually not doing any of the big lifts. Started a program that works more on the smaller muscles.
I do have a incline DB press and leg press in my program, and lot's of back work as well.
But no regular DL, Squat or BP

So far i am definatly not bored yet, seeing progress in most of the exercises by increasing weekly.

Still with my notebook, writing everything down, making side notes, like sleep, how the workout or a particular part felt for me, and adjusting when my back is playing up on me again, like it did this week, so did just 3 exercises, and then 45 minuts of cardio.

If you wanna try out this routine, let me know, i can share it with you (still have your mailadres somewhere) You can always adjust it, by adding the the Big 3 and replace with something else.

Oh and so nice that you still keep that note, that makes my heart full of joy.

I may do that again in future, but for now, i first wanna get back to 100kg again.
