Single egg, one crumbled sausage patty, zucchini, mushrooms, green onions, tomatoes and kale. It’s what’s for breakfast three days in a row. Not tired of it yet. Kale, tomatoes and zucchini are from my garden. 7

This weekend’s batch of air fryer focaccia. I forgot to add some brown flour this time. I’ve simplified the method for high hydration doughs. Instead of stretching with a wet hand periodically use a small stiff spatula to stretch and stir without dirtying your hands. 3

We're still eating out of the freezer and pantry after returning jetlagged from a trip. Cheat's bouillabaise used up some leftover alioli lurking in the fridge. I wanted to try a chocolate shortcrust pastry before using it for a dinner party on Wednesday night. An ex colleague is doing is goodbye dinner after work at my place as he is moving back to Australia at the end of the month. My place is walking distance from work and I don't mind cooking for a crowd. Filled the experimental tartlet shell with some toxic looking jello instant pistachio pudding that the hubby accidentally bought 2 years ago in Canada. 5

It's a small world sometimes. Most of my experience is east of the 416, although we've visited Altmonte and environs. We've actually also been to Brittania Beach (see pic below), although I didn't realize there was a nature reserve there (focus on the beach and the yacht club [we're sailors, too]). Your husband might like the Mer Bleue reserve near Navan which is a nice walkabout (I wouldn't say, "hike," exactly, lol). In non-winter seasons, I bring my bike up from NJ when visiting my daughter and her family, and go exploring, for instance, along the Ottawa River to the east of the city. Ottawa is a pleasant city. Usually there is a lot of activity when we visit, so my exploring comes in between family activities times. I have a hankering for a dedicated week or two adventure cycling tour up there one of these times, and next summer might be it. In the meantime, I have been riding something called the Prescott Russell trail out east towards the Quebec border. The Ottawa region has a very good network of bike trails, and Ontario generally is rich in cycling opportunities. I'll definitely take your foodie advice. The family just came down for some summertime Jersey beach time, and our next get together will likely be the Christmas holiday period. Sorry about your mom ailing. With my daughter 500 miles away, in another country, I of course contemplate distance and separation factors from the aging parent point-of-view. It's not the easiest situation. 5

Cheese souffle and a green salad with pickled beets and croutons. My souffles didn't rise as much as normal. I suspect it is because I beat the egg whites in a plastic measuring cup instead of glass. I have read that plastic vessels don't really wash up scrupulously oil free, so egg whites don't get to the stiff peak stage. 8

Sunday dinner included a new item for me: "corn ribs," along with old standbys of turkey burger and side salad. This is probably my last fresh corn of the season. "Corn ribs" seem to be a "thing" now, and looked worth a try. Delicious. There are many variant seasonings, I took the chile powder, smoked paprika, etc., path, with a siracha mayo dipping sauce I whipped up. They came out excellent, and I used my oven broiler. They're called "ribs" because you eat the kernels off the cob cores like meat off spare ribs, and in cooking, the cob cores tend to curve like real ribs. One of the variants is to halve the cob before quartering it to make riblets versus leaving its length intact (except for the endcaps). I chose to halve the cob. I felt safer and more secure quartering the half cobs. Still it was work, my wife was more than a bit anxious watching, and some of my ribs got a bit wonky shaped. WARNING WARNING WARNING … I would be remiss if I did not point out that it is very easy to serve up a side of severed fingers cutting up the cobs to make the ribs. If you want to try corn ribs, you don't want to lose fingers. Most of the youtube videos I watched pointed out the need for a good (heavy chef's) knife, very sharp knife, excellent knifehandling skills, cutting board surface and prep, lots of caution and a preferred cutting approach to save your precious fingers. This is probably a good presentation of technique: Since I had the oven broiler going for the corn, I used it for the burgers. I skipped a melted butter baste since I made the siracha mayo. The burgers were served on leftover semolina loaf from the weekend. The side salad is my typical version. If you watch the video, you'll see I didn't bother with the foil rolls in my broil pan … because I made "riblets." There were 5 ears in my package. I resharpened my big knife before doing the corn rib cutting for best effect. 5

Cappelletti made from blitzed leftover chicken stew and store bought gyoza skins I parked in the freezer last month. Store bought tomato sauce. Ready washed salad with cheddar shavings, a sprinkle of candied nuts I keep in the pantry and vinaigrette I keep in a squeeze bottle in the fridge. This was a 5 minute weeknight dinner. Those corn ribs look great. 3

Will have to try corn ribs - novel idea. Recently braved cut rounds of mini corn in stir fry vegs and enjoyed. 2

I am throwing a midweek dinner party tomorrow for an ex colleague who is moving back to Australia at the end of September. I volunteered because my place is a 10 minute walk from the office which is handy because there is a tube strike. Testing out tomorrow's starter of roll your own Vietnamese summer rolls for lunch. 6

Cooked simply tonight because I need to do a big cook tomorrow. An ex colleague who's leaving London is throwing his farewell dinner at my place. A stir fried chicken breast with green pepper, black bean and some of the stir fry sauce I prepped for tomorrow's main of beef lok lak. Cucumber salad with asian black sesame dressing. Brown rice. 3

An experiment for tomorrow's dinner party. This time I followed a recipe that puts raspberries on the bottom followed by chocolate ganache and then a garnish of raspberries. i think I will skip the raspberries on the bottom tomorrow because it is too fiddly and looks messy. 7

My first time to make or even taste risotto! How have I lived this long and not experienced this?!? 😮 Recipes from Jennifer’s Way Kitchen by Jennifer Esposito. DH and I felt like we were dining at a fancy restaurant. 😊 6

I forgot to take pictures of the dinner party, except dessert. We had Vietnamese summer rolls, Cambodian street corn, Cambodian beef lok lak. Dessert was chocolate tartlets with berries. 4

Segue into Autumn - Wednesday evening dinner entree (09/10): not exactly chicken parm, but maybe an improv cousin. Seasoned chicken thighs covered in tomato pasta sauce and cheese, sitting on a bed of chopped carrots. A throw-together meal made out of on-hand items. I had two major decision points: dry roast the prepared chicken and carrots, then sauce them as a finish (with cheese) versus just cover with sauce and bake, effectively braising or stewing the chicken, and, should this be served with pasta? So, I simply stewed the chicken and carrots in the sauce, adding freshly grated cheese near the end to melt for serving. I thought the carrots would be sufficiently carby to skip pasta, but wound up serving the chicken on wheat toast to sop up the saucy goodness. Not shown: chopped veg salad on the side, y'all have seen about 20 dozen versions of that. 4

The second dinner party I threw this week. A Chinese ex colleague came over with her rather young step mom. I cooked western because I was too intimidated to make Asian for them. Salad with smoked chicken, candied nuts, blueberries and croutons. Duck confit with roast potatoes, sauteed spinach and glazed carrots. Chocolate and raspberry tarts. 4

Tuesday, 09/16 … busy day throw-together dinner from pantry items: roast chicken thighs (garlicky herb rub), ertsaz Bombay Aloo (potato flakes with Indian spices in the manner [almost] of Bombay potatoes), peas (from frozen). Potato flakes are convenient for certain cases, but really, really need some help not being cardboard. I have been hankering to make Bombay Aloo, so this seemed like a good experiment. Missing from the classic recipe in this version are mustard seeds. I used coconut milk rather than dairy for the mash, and incorporated commercial Madras curry powder and garam masala. I was also sparing on the cayenne in deference to my wife. This was very aromatic, and tasty, but I think next time I might amp up the quantity of spices. I added the spices to the boiling potato water to heat up and ensure equal distribution in the resultant potatoes. 3
