yes, sadly I have been messaged by Steven who informed me that the MFP owners/staff are seriously considering eliminating any "fringe" dieters from participating. Not sure if this includes paleo, but I defitnetely got the vibe that this will include the bodybuilding muscle heads for some weird reason. I do have a free meetup.com webpage I can offer us. That would keep the lurkers out.

I just realized that Steven must be talking about the bodybuilding.com trolls who invaded a few days ago and went after paleo and low carb threads and then the big attack they did about a month ago across the whole forums.

    yes, that is the case.

here's an awesome blog about calories in - calories out doesn't always work. I plateaued, and kept lowering my calories, doing the lowfat and high carb idea. About killed me. The diabetes is gone and I'm loving the low carb way of eating. Much better and I'm at 2k calories a day, up 800 calories! and I'm getting cut! The fat on my thighs is just melting off. That's always the last to go on a woman, but it feels great to be able to finally eat as much as I want and lose the body fat!

I think I can understand not wanting to promote certain diet products or eating disorders but I'm not sure how they could police all the different eating programs that everyone is following.

The insidious thing about eating disorders are that a person with one can turn ANY way of eating on its ear and continue to destroy themselves with it. Low fat, low carb, Paleo, HCG, fitness...all of it. And there is no way to police that.

Of course, I don't see it as the staff's job to police for anything, really. Or censor anyone. This place isn't set up to be a closed group in anyway. I suppose they could make it so, but would seem counterproductive to the success of their website.

I want to go where all your lovely support and experience goes...so keep me posted!

I would be interested in another way to stay in touch if that happens. I find these threads hard to follow anyway. Private group on facebook or meetup .. anything. Keep me in mind if you all go anywhere!

QUESTION: After being totally clean and grain free for over a month I have started to notice that I have an INCREDIBLE sense of smell again AND taste. I think I was actually intolerant to gluten or have celiac so I wonder if somehow it affected my sinuses/allergies!! (among the many other things it was doing to me.

Has anyone else noticed this going paleo?

NSV- 30 days and 3 inches LOST!

Yes ma'am! I'm not celiac or gluten intolerant- I have a severe grass allergy. My brilliant doctor decided to test me for wheat/grain allergy and it hit me just as hard as the other grasses. As it turned out when I quit eating them I was WAY less congested, wheezed less and eventually (after a few months) quit snoring!

Same goes for Tree fruit, a lot of nuts, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, celery, rudabeggas, turnips, beets, soy, corn and a bunch of other crap. It was a HUGE dietary change and what pushed me toward a paleo lifestyle. I was eating a version of Paleo before I ever knew what it was. As I've cut other things and added fat I'm seeing some HUGE physical transformations. I can't help but wonder how much nicer this journey would have been had I eaten this way from the start...

Congrats on the inches lost! :drinker:

message me if you want to save the spread sheet I made up for those of you who have given us stats.

You can save it to your computer - it's excel 97 (.xls) format. If you don't have Office, you can get free shareware to open it and edit it at openoffice.org

There are sheets with names at the bottom. Open the sheet with your name and make sure you scroll to the top. The window has splits in it, so if you scroll through the rows and collumns the info. can disappear. It's still there, just scroll back to the top and to the left of the window to get to the top.

    Enjoy.

Agreed! How about a group on Facebook?

I would love a Facebook group but I would really prefer a private group where all of my other "friends" can't see what I post. In order to have a private group we must be friends on FB. NOT ALL PEOPLE have to be friends with each other. Each person can add a friend to a group once you are in the group.

If anyone is interested I would be happy to get it going but you would have to be my friend on FB. Message me if you like. Understood if people aren't comfortable with that too.
  • Good evening friends, I'm happy to be finally back home! I had a 21 hour day yesterday with a late departure, time change and flight delays, I got home at 11pm, slept for 5 hours and was back at work at 7am this morning! I was definitely hurting and felt like a zombie all day.

It's been a tricky 4 days for me since we always had hotel and restaurant meals and I indulged in 2 glasses of wine and a couple of ounces of cheeses.... I missed preparing my own food and look forward to this weekend as I put my crockpot to good use

busywaterbending - You inspire me want to workout again! I've been slacking off for a while now... Btw, good to know your dog bite is healing! LOL at that stinky gal at your gym! I work with a female who has the worst body funk ever and I avoid her like a plague.

Grokette - I'm so happy that you get to go to the world series game!!! Hope you'd have a blast

msbanana - Your profile pic is very inspirational!

Btw, I just wanted to say I love this group, you are all awesome :flowerforyou:

    NSV's all around!!

Finally lost all my bloat AND I'm down a little over a pound from my lowest recorded MFP weight! 166.9 thank you very much!!

AND I set another PR for the squat today- I did a full set of 6 at 240lbs. I feel like I could have gone heavier- I just might next week... just for ****s and giggles ya know.

I feel good about all the hard work I've been putting in. I tend to get lost in the moment and when I'm not "seeing" progress or progress slows down (i.e. becomes internal- building muscles I cant see yet etc...) I get frustrated. I took some pics today and I'm going to mash them up next to the ones from this time last month and see what's up. If I like what I see I might share.

Hope you all are having a most fabulous evening and happy Friday (a little early)!!

    :drinker:

google+ allows you to set up "circles". You can share with specific "circles" of friends. For example, you can set up a "paleo" or "primal" circle (or both) and when you post, you decide which circles you want to see your post/thread. I like it so much better than Facebook.

I, too, have noticed that I can smell/taste with more accuracy. It made going on an organic Tilth Garden Tour with my daughter today delightful as they ask the kids to use all their 5 senses in the garden. This big kid used all of hers and it was especially pleasant to smell/taste the fennel, sorrel, lemon balm, grapefruit mint and other herbs.

Saw Kiwi vines for the first time in my life that made a pleasant shady place to escape the weather. Ah, gardens! A delight for many reasons but especially poignant was hearing the uncontainable joy of my 6 yo when she recognized a plant by smell, taste or sight (we live in govt. sub. housing apts with NO gardening allowed, so she's never seen food grow except on TV and 1 broccoli pot we grew before the mgrs cracked down on us). She's quite the little Paleo Foodie and was SO happy to be there participating that I think she'd have spent all day in the dripping rain under grey Seattle skies except that they didn't have bacon or bunless grass fed beef burgers for sale or consumption. When she asked the tour guides when we were going to eat, they chuckled and said that the grownups who brought us would solve that puzzle as soon as the tour was done.

In her mind, a rainbow of veggies is sure proof that unctuous, fatty meats have already been prepared. At home, she has had me drill into her since we went Primal, "You don't have to ever eat anything that makes your tummy sad. Please remember to eat your fat first, then your protein and if you have room leftover, then have all the veggies you'd like." She takes me quite seriously so that once she ate her fat off of her bacon trying to save the meatier bits for the end. Quite a sight! LOL

Whether they dissolve this site or our respectful participation in it or not, we will always have this: We are no longer limited only to a knowledge of the SAD, we now have more than CW, we have the keys to health and we have each other, our primal/paleo tribal brothers and sisters.

If you don't already have me as a friend on Facebook, please feel free to private message me for my name there and I'll happily friend you. I'm not one of those social networking friend collectors. I actually, up until recently, have reserved FB for staying in touch with friends from my hometown or highschool who live 1000's of miles away and for my close family. Something has shifted in me in the last 6 months since I learned both that gluten makes me ill and that grain is inefficient in providing for my nutritional needs.

The most important people in my life are the ones who share their journey with this WOL and, like our beloved DrBorkBork (from Palelo Support? thread and of the blogs The Pregnant Diabetic and The Primal Junk Foodie, who are a fountain of free recipe ideas for keeping home, health and hearth together. These are my family, my tribe.

Just in case you find my account deleted or me gone. I felt compelled to post this when a lovely thread had one less-than-knowledgeable person undoing a lot of good work I had already done to help alleviate needless suffering.
I have a cup of coffee each morning with semi skimmed milk. During the day I tend to drink tea.........but once or twice a week I indulge in a skinny latte (which is heaven). Everything is ok in moderation I think, obviously drinking full fat coffee every day more than once a day wont help with the weight loss.

You and I differ in our understanding of what works to shed fat. Also for me, according to my physician, carbs/grains/gluten are NOT okay for me, not even in "moderation". Drinking skim milk causes an insulin response in your body due to milk's native sugar, lactose. For those who can tolerate dairy at all, drinking grass fed heavy whipping cream or coconut cream tells your body to burn fat and build muscle. If you haven't heard of this before, have a look at my profile page, before and after pics. I weighed 352 lbs. Now take a look at my food diary. Note that I usually have over 85% of my calories from fats. The result of eating a diet rich in healthy brain/heart-loving fats?

Now I'm healthier at 248 lbs. My blood pressure is finally in the athletic range instead of sky high and my triglycerides are beautiful. I am getting a 6 pack and I did it all with the help of healthy fats.

Full fat coffee for those who can tolerate both dairy and coffee, can be and certainly was in my case, the secret to my weight loss, building a healthy, muscular, functionally strong body. My endocrinologist recommended this nutritional choice - switch from milk to heavy whipping cream, preferably from grass fed local cows - in order to reverse 30 years of PCOS and infertility. My daughter is now 6. Her washboard abs come from eating the same way. When her pediatrician saw her recently, she wondered if my daughter was over-training due to muscular development and the knowledge that I had shed over 100 lbs and gotten passionate about strength training. I told her that while she plays outside like any healthy kid her age will, she doesn't lift heavy weights with me very often, but when she does she can easily deadlift with perfect technique, (eg. safely) half her body weight in a Russian Kettlebell. I was mentored in how to train my daughter and what was appropriate for her developmental stage by experts in pediatric sports and strength training coaches.

My kid reads voraciously, eats a diet high in healthy saturated fats and devoid of processed foods. She eats all the protein she cares to, fresh vegetables of every color and thinks of fresh fruit as a special treat. She also learned to read before turning two and started doing Algebra before turning 5. Now I can't think of how I as a mom can improve on all of that and I'd be happy if she just liked to run around in the sunshine and read once in a while. Everything else is bonus. Did she get all of this from super smart DNA. Nope! Her donor and I are both intelligent but she is more advanced because I breastfed her while eating healthy fats and continued to offer healthy fats to her directly when she started experimenting with food.

Our brain is made up of fats and without essential fatty acids the brain begins to malfunction. Makes me wonder who I'd have been if my mom had access to the nutritional science that I did. In any case my brain, already in its 40's is improving too. I just scored off the charts on a neurological testing battery. I once failed the test to a brain starved of those important nutrients.

So I'm just posting this because no one should be limited to the life full of morbid obesity's side affects as I was if they don't want to be. I live a pain free, active, elite athletic life now. I enjoy being alive and being a single mom to my daughter. I enjoy eating without fear and continue to improve all my health markers. The thing that has made this possible is switching from the mentality of Low Calorie/Low Fat to the right amount of the right foods for my body, including LOTS and LOTS of healthy fats.

    About the Symposium:

The symposium is presented by the Ancestral Health Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating healthcare professionals and laypersons on ancestral lifestyle dynamics.

Good morning everyone. I am going to get my blog up and going strong and start posting monthly pictures of my progress there.

I think I am a jinx for the Cardinals. Of course I go to the game and they lose. Onward to Texas and hopefully they will win 2 games in Texas and come back to St Louis for Game 6 for the win!!

Contacting a couple of companies today about hosting options. Excited!!

Good morning everyone. The game last night, wow. Anyway, I created a private meetup online group and will be putting allot of the awesome links from here on there. Join me. I'm not in charge of it, just paying for it. I want a place where we can all let our hair down with out the prying eyes of lurkers and haters!

    http://www.meetup.com/Paleo30/

If you haven't done meetup yet, you are missing a fun place. Anyway, I'm still going to log my food here, and I even created a link on the meetup web page to MFP so we can easily keep up on our thread here. Hoping our paleo community can grow closer via the more private meetup club page I've created. As for FB (wastebook), no thank you! I hate the groups option on there and the spamming, and the ads, and the constant changes, and the big brother.....

Grokette, I hope you get on the meetup site asap so I can make you a mod.

Everyone, the link to the spreadsheet I've created is there. Grab it, edit it, then UPLOAD your own! Meetup has the ability to store, edit, and upload as well as a messageboard, mailing list, etc. It is all customizable according to each individuals' preferences! I love it!!

:drinker:

Hmmm I wonder about this....my daughter and I do not have celiac disease, but we are both very allergic to grasses. We did a food "sensitivity" test for her, and wheat came back as something she is sensitive to. Not technically allergic, but definitely sensitive. She will not be happy (being a grumpy teenager, 14 yo.), but she may be going gluten-free, as well.

It boggles my mind that some people think primal/paleo eating is "faddish" or unhealthy and a "niche" group.
Or that it is even a "low carb" diet. It certainly doesn't have to be.

The hysteria I see on these boards against eliminating grains is almost laughable. Sometimes when I read the person's comment I go check out their food diary and shake my head at the choices that they deem healthy and of course "moderate".
My eating used to be full of those foods, too. I used to think I was eating healthy as well.
I don't get the name calling either. One woman calls us "carb nazis" and another says we have an "agenda". I guess they don't see the irony.

I am so grateful that I found myself at Primal's door and that I chose to walk in.

I don't have FB and don't care to have an acc't so I wish you all well. In my brief time knowing you, I've already learned quite a bit to help me on my way. I find this group to be very enthusiastic & made up of very helpful people.

It's led me to kettlebells ... thanks Illyeanna! a workout that WORKS and is FUN!
MDA taught me that I don't have to kill myself for hours and hours at a gym in order to get fit. I can GO FOR A WALK! A SLOW one at that! lol ... colour me a happy camper!
I've learned that sleep and rest is just as important as the food and movement.
That eliminating stress amap is also an important component of restoring health.

Primal/paleo is a well rounded (and grounded) way of life.

    Me, too.

Some people are opposed to social media groups like facebook and google+ so it's my opinion that moving to those websites or that format is, while easy, still not a workable idea.

Meetup is a lot different than those, but one does have to sign up for an account. I'm looking forward to see what Grokette's blog will look like.

And, for those leaving, what will you use for food diary?

Welcome to the meetup.com group, it's pretty safe there, and I posted up my own stat xls. and my own photo album to share w/ everyone who will join. I hope you guys will feel comfortable enough to do so on there too. I will use MFP food diary. I like having it. I'm looking forward to Grokette's blog for wisdom and paleo advice too!

I love how paleo has worked so quickly on reversing such horrible health problems for me. A cavity that was xrayed and diagnosed by a Dentist July 2011 was eliminated. A second dentist xrayed me again for prep to fill in the cavity during yesterday's visit. NO CAVITY! I am so amazed. I had no idea fat and protein can fill in and eliminate cavities! wow. Xrays don't lie. I'm scheduling bloodwork with my gastroenterologist for November. I have to be at least 4 weeks out from the antibiotics to get a true reading. I already know that my diabetes is gone, and I'm hoping the low carb lifestyle will eliminate my hypoglycemia.

I think I need to grab my med. records and post them on the meetup.com group page for proof. Too amazing. Thank God I discovered MFP and the paleo thread.

You really may want to try it.

One of the biggest symptoms for me was my guts- They told me I had a stomach virus when I was in high school, they called it IBS as an adult. The fact of the matter was I would get debilitating stomach cramps, diarreah and in some cases (like eating a bag of baby carrots) a result not unlike food poisoning (vomiting, cramping, diarreah, chills etc...). I lived like this for THIRTY YEARS. I just figured that's how I was made. When talking to my allergy doctor she asked about BMs and food poisoning etc... and all i could think was "What the hell does my IBS have to do with the fact that I've had a sinus infection and bronchitis for 6 months?"

Honestly, her perscription of a new way of eating (basically paleo) completely changed my life. I get that eating this way isn't for everyone and there are sacrifices that you have to make that many don't want to or can't fathom but I will never go back.

If she had just prescribed yet another drug I would still be fat and perpetually ill.
She's the first doc to prescribe me a new way of eating and a netti-pot instead of 3 more drugs they get paid to sell...

Hope you are able to help her. You can even approach it like my doc did- we did a food "bootcamp" we cut out everything all at once for an entire month. I was at that point to assess how I felt and could start adding things back one at a time. Only one thing and if I had ANY symptoms (wheezing, congestion, stuffy nose, stomach cramps, loose stool) it was permanently off the list. I would also REALLY recommend doing this in the winter (or when the allergens are VERY low) so you don't mix food symptoms with airborn.

    Good luck!
