What keeps you on the treadmill?

I can't hear anything my kids are yelling at me from the top of the stairs when I'm on the treadmill. That keeps me on there!!0

Once I started having to run outside for my long runs I can't get back on the dreadmill. Anything longer than 10 minutes on that thing and I want to shoot myself in the face.
If I'm running, I'm running outdoors I don't think there's anything that could get me to run for too long on it. On the flipside I don't even feel the need listen to music when I run outdoors.
Same here. I loathe the treadmill. It is mind numbing boring compared to running outside. I do workout on an elliptical or a stairmaster when I don't run outside. With the elliptical I just watch the TVs at the gym. With the stairmaster I hold on for dear life and keep moving lest I fall off and die.0 -
I tried reading on the treadmill, but just can't do it.
Like everyone else, music keeps me going and so does tv. I love that the gym I go to has tvs on all of the cardio equipment. Oh, and it helps that there are giant glass windows to look out onto the street to watch the world go by.
A mental trick that keeps me going is thinking to myself how great that post-workout shower will feel after a long, sweaty workout.0 -
It's funny that people have said they aren't working hard enough if they are capable of reading... I can't keep up a conversation, that's for sure (& I thought that was the gage we were to roughly use), but reading isn't more difficult than watching TV (at least for me). LOL A little more brainpower, I guess, but no more body power than watching a rerun.0

I STILL haven't found something that keeps me on the treadmill! I find I can run farther and faster outside than on the "dreadmill" any day! Today for example (it's raining here), I was on the treadmill for 30 minutes with my fav music AND the TV on and all I could do was look at the numbers to see what my pace was, how many more minutes I had, how many calories I was burning...it was making me crazy! I do much much much better when I can be outside, listening to my music, and enjoying my surroundings. Anyone else feel this way? I've gotta get a sweatproof/waterproof case for my iphone, or I'm never gonna make it through on the crappy rainy days!!

Same for me BUT I've been on the treadmill lately trying to work on my speed. I always have music blasting, and I like to watch the guys lifting weights, and if that fails then I imagine I'm outside running. I can't read or look at anything close up bc of motion sickness0 -
Gravity.
That's just a theory.0 -
I love to listen to podcasts. I especially like This American Life, RadioLab, and The Moth. Getting drawn into a well-told story (fiction or non) keeps me going. Sometimes I even go longer than I planned because I have to hear the end of the story.
Treadmill: bleah. I walk/run outside whenever possible.0 -

Same here. I had to run on the treadmill today and I was pretty sure I was going to die.0 -

^^This for me, too!0 -
I am going to try using my kindle next time.
But usually I just watch TV. I much rather be outside though0 -
Oh - AND I like doing intervals... for some reason, when I am only focused on a minute or two or three at a time - my time on the TM really whizzes by.0

Netflix instant tv shows on my iPad. I've already finished Drop Dead Diva and now I'm on King of the Hill! =D0

This would do it for me!

When I am at my local gym... everything! Will power, music, TV, conversation....but when I travel for work (which is pretty frequently) it is my second husband, my Kindle that helps me along! I set it up on the treadmill and pick a speed and I am gone! My mind devours the story and I don't even know the time is ticking by... it is SO hard for me to get motivated to work out when I stuck in a hotel somewhere and reading is my one constant. I wear progressive lenses so the being able to enlarge the type makes it easy since I don't run with my glasses on!0

Imagining one of those hot beefed up dudes who is lifting weights is watching me counting the minutes I can run for.
I am clearly insane.
you know, a lot of the time, your right... although maybe not counting so much...0 -
My music and the fact the cardio room faces the mountains.
I don't see how people can read and workout. I'm going at it 100% and don't see how its possible.0 -
Young and the Restless One Hour Monday through Friday... If I miss my scheduled cycling class.0

generally agree with all of the above!!!!!0 -
I don't agree with the posters that said you're not working hard enough if you're reading while you're on the treadmill. I know with the kindle or nook (which is what I have), in order to keep reading while running I just have to make the font much bigger so I can read while running hard. It was the only thing that got me through C25K but now I think I can only run outdoors cause I loooooooathe the treadmills at the gym.0

Sadly, sometimes nothing keeps me on there. I'm very uncoordinated and frequently fell off when trying to run or do a fast walk on the treadmill. So I sold it.0

i have set distances /goals everyday, music so i dont hear my breathing0

I love to run, but to get me on a treadmill these days is gonna take a gun pointed at me.
And after about 5 minutes I'd just tell them to pull the trigger.0 -
I have tried and tried to stay on the treadmill, I have ran 2 halfs and have another in March 2012, but I never seem to run before the event... I try, but the longest I have been on a treadmill is about 10 mins... I manage longer on the cross trainer...........
I just warm up on the treadmill, then jump on the cross trainer, 30 seconds to kill myself then 1min recovery, do this for as long as I can, then jump off and hit the weights... I only do weights for about 20 mins, maybe longer as I still dont know 100% what I am doing just yet....
I find the treadmills so boring......... I have had friends who are personal trainers, with me, but for some reason I dont like them...
I do enjoy running outside, with friends, but alone, I find it boring... I just find running boring, I just like the feeling after a half, when my brain in feeling weird and I am on a high, so I book another half.. LOL xxxxxxxxx I would love to get that high from a treadmill, I have tried, but get soooooooooooo board...
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Thought I might get some tips from this forum...................... xx0 -
Moving my legs so I don't fall on my *kitten*.
...erm...sorry...
Could you please repeat the question?
LoL Too funny!0 -
For me I use the R. bike and I just watch tv because with out some thing to do cardio is sooooo boring but it goes by fast for me when I am watching a program or movie.0
