Last year I thought I was being clever getting her a portable DVD player to take on her trip (22 hour flight)... It was a total flop. PLEASE ladies, give me some help here. I need your insight into the female mind... She wont tell me what she wants... never seems to want anything... its so frustrating.

Ya gotta tell us about the girl. Is she a girly girl? Hobbies? Interests? Give us more than you're a typical guy.

Well, I probably wouldn't be any help because I thought the portable DVD player for a 22 hour flight was very thoughtful.

They have all sorts of price ranges.

Or what kind of hobbies does she have? Honestly sometimes women prefer pretty to practical

Some woman don't really want gifts. I sort of gave up, and then I discovered that the big hit was services that she could enjoy like nails, hair and that sort of thing. And for God's sake man, don't buy her clothes unless instructed!

Jewelry is always nice :) It's tricky though because most men have no idea what looks nice, so it might not be a bad idea to take her there and let her pick something out! Or get her something for one of her hobbies. Or a gift card to a place where she likes to shop!

On a more serious note, how about a gift certificate to a day spa...massage...something like that?

Spa days are always appreciated here. I usually don't spend money on myself so a day of massage, pedi/mani and facial is a big hit.

Agree.. give us some details about her. Is she into purses, jewlery or what?

If electronics was not a hit I would go with jewelry or a spa day. Sounds like she's more girly? Was she maybe expecting a certain ring last year? Like the others have said, you need to go with what she likes i.e. jewelry, salon stuff, expensive purses (I like Coach) etc.

I don't know how much help I'd be. I think that was a great gift.

What are some of her interests? There isn't really a template gift that all women would love. We're individual people with individual likes and interests. For example, most women would love something in diamonds, but I wouldn't. I find them boring and cliche.

This!!! I love massages, manicure, pedicure, coupons for day off of cooking (and not this doesn't mean you just go out to eat or bring home fast food). Is she into fitness, Itunes gift cards for new music?

For me, memories trump a wrapped gift. Albeit there are time when both are appropriate and Christmas may be one of them.

I enjoy a weekend away, a scavenger hunt with small gifts found with each clue leading to my favorite restaurant, a trip to a city I've never been, etc.

Then I take one or two of the photos taken and frame it and can always look back with a smile on my face. (Providing the experience was a good one. )

You guys are trying to get me killed.
  • Yep, we need to know more about her. You're girlfriend, I assume? Some girls (like me) don't want jewelry. I'd rather have something practical. Or something fun and/or artsy.

A sack of C-notes always keeps me out of trouble with the missus. The bigger, the better.

How about a nice framed print of her favorite painting? Tickets to the theater to a show she's always wanted to see? What kind of dancer was she?

If she's girly.. I would go the designer purse route, that coule earn you some points there. For jewelry, you need to figure out if she likes yellow gold or white. You could pick out the perfect ring / earrings, but if it's the wrong color she will not wear it.

New Rules of Lifting for Woman book? Seems to be pretty popular 'round these MFP parts...

Every girl should have a set of durable diamond earring studs with screw backs. They are fairly reasonable if you shop correctly. The screw back part is very important! I wear mine all the time and take them out about once a month for a good cleaning. A daily dose of rubbing alcohol applied with cotton balls works well.

If she's into musicals/theatre, get her tickets to a show!

ETA: You could make a mini getaway package out of it and get a nice hotel room for the night of the show.

Agreed.. it's very rare I take mine out.

I would absolutely hate that as a gift. I never wear studs and I don't care for diamonds. That's why it's about what SHE would like, not what "women" like.
  • Im that kind of girl who never wants anything either. When my husband ask me what I want I never have an answer for him. It's because just being with my family and friends is the best gift. However, it's nice to be surprised with a gift. For me, even though i dont wear lots of jewelry, a nice classic piece of jewelry is a wonderful gift. For example, classic white diamond earings or neclace. Also, think about something she has talked about over the last year. I have talked about learning how to play the ukele and it's something I have wanted for a while. If my husband were to surprise me with a uke and some lessons, that would be really awesome. I know us women can be hard to read sometime, but really think about your girlfriends hobbies and interest.

    Good luck! Happy Holidays!
