When you started biking was it hard and how much did you do at a time? Do you need the fancy bike and helmet, gear, etc... to ride in the races you stated? I really want to complete a triathlon or biking competition so that I have something to workout towards. Thanks! You look awesome. Great abs, what was a regular workout for you daily time wise?

When I started biking my first goal was to be able to do 10 miles in 30 minutes. I kept working at it daily until I go there, then I switched to 20 miles in an hour and continued until I accomplised that. Then I just kept riding, sometimes 2 or 3 hours at a time. YOu don't need the facy bike or helmet or gear, you can buy something inexpensive to ride. For me I went on Craigslist and found used high quality/brand name bikes, did a little research to find out which were the best and bought a Trek 2300 for $500 and a Cannondale Ironman 600 for $400 and I ride the wheels off them. But once again you don't need anything that expensive. My regular workouts are normally 2 hours long, sometimes a bit shorter and sometimes a bit longer just depends on my schedule. Hope this helps!

How did you get the definition back? Did you do lots of sit ups?

I do 500 crunches, 200 stability ball situps and 500 mason twists with a bar daily on top of lots and lots of cardio and a 1200 calorie diet.

That's awesome! I'm in the service currently, and I can't help but wonder how much of the crap you had to deal with in the service contributed to your illnesses and lack of desire to stay healthy. For you, that's all in the past! Congrats brother!

Way to tackle it, Shirt! I'm another AF retiree who's had to get back in shape. My second career, teaching, brought on all the problems you had, with the exception of the thyroid problem, but I'm med-free again! (and I'm content with substitute teaching) Life is good!

How did your hypothyroidism affect your weight loss?
Did you have to modify your thyroid medicine at all?
