at what weight/size is it acceptable to wear a bikini?

  • It really depends on the type of "bikini". I do not advocate running around in a string thong bikini while wearing a US size 24, however there are cuts that can work at any size. There are some with shorts that come up nearly as high as the styles from the 50s and go down enough so that no butt cheeks are hanging out that are still classified as a bikini and work just fine.

Great response - Totally agree! ;-)

That being said, I think there are boundaries/limits/norms/whatever you want to call them

And that is the crux of the problem, we should be working to demolish these, they are unfair and cause a lot of people distress.

My contribution to breaking down these boundaries will be to walk along the beach in a skirt and bikini top what ever size I may be (if the weather is hot enough to warrant that). Also never again to deny myself the cooling benefits of mini skirts/short shorts because my legs are 'too big' and/or 'don't look nice' (I live in a place that can get as hot as 40 degrees).

You're right. I'm sure I have been on the receiving end of ridicule. And I must admit that probably *does* effect how I feel about this. However, it doesn't change that I am not comfortable with the idea of a very large person wearing a tiny bathing suit. Sorry. Just being honest.

I think I'm the only girl in the world (or at least this forum...!) that LOVES the stretch marks I have since having Lucie... She's four months old and I can't WAIT to get down to a size eight...stick on a bikini and show them off! It's like a baby tattoo!! :-) x

whenever you feel comfortabl wearing one. doesnt matter how big you are, the only time i feel uncomfotable when i see people wear clothes is when they are toooo small and you get a shot of something you dont want to see. but i wouldnt ridicule them for it . no ones perfect.

There isn't an acceptable size. It's when you feel confident with yourself to wear one. For me about 10lbs from now.

For me, never ever ever. I wouldn't feel comfortable in one as I haven't ever worn one, even at a healthy weight.

For others, whenever they want. What other people choose to wear to the beach/pool isn't any of my business. I really don't give a **** what other people do. If I don't like the way they look, I will avert my eyes. If I can't do that, I'm pretty sure I'll get over it.

    Nothing wrong with honesty.

I want to see people of any size, comfortable to wear what is socially acceptable to wear on a "perfect body" because it helps me become comfortable with my own, not picture perfect size and shape.

I did thoroughly enjoy this place http://www.mybodygallery.com/ although almost all of the stories are incredibly sad. I had to come here to see images of other women my height and size and no I'm not the only one. I have to keep looking at my belly in the mirror to get used to it and realise it Isn't disgusting.

At whatever size/shape/weight the individual feels comfortable in a bikini.

Size has nothing to do with whether it is "acceptable" or not, I guess everyone is going to have a different viewpoint, but that doesn't mean any one person "right".

My viewpoint is that if I look fat in a bikini, I'll look fat in a one peice or in shorts or jeans or a dress. The only difference with a bikini v one-piece that you can see some white flabby stomach instead of some coloured-lycra-covered flabby stomach.
Not sure where the problems lies - if I'm hideous to look at, please look away, but I don't think a thin skin of lycra is going to make that much difference.

I spent some time in Italy this summer (hard life, I know) and the greatest thing was that absolutely every woman on the beach wore a bikini. I saw some rockin' grandmas in two pieces. I guess it's just being comfortable in your body... and how much of it you want to tan :)
  • you can wear a bikini if you feel comfortable in a bikini.
if you are self concious at your starting weight you still will be at your goal weight

Wow I have such better things to do at the beach than sit around critiquing people's swimwear choices

Wear what you want. Always. It's no one's business what you put on your body. Learn to stop caring what other people may or may not be thinking.

    Hey everyone.

at what weight/size do you believe it is acceptable to wear a bikini?

    Discuss :)

Reactively, as long as it is appropriate ~ venue and company sensitive.

For me there are relationships which will prevent me from being inappropriately attired in front of them. Strictly no bikinis allowed is only applied when I'm in the company of the senior members of the clan or during a traditional cultural guests-list picnic *IF and when wearing a bikini is an option whilst socialising, wearing a coverall above it at all times is mandatory ~ no matter the weight/size/body shape, where the length of the coverall is to be ankle to floor length. Baring the chest and arms is acceptable ~ baring the legs are disallowed.

How my Mum has attired herself over the years, is considered acceptable wear. She's now a UK 6 and is 5ft 5.

    * With the sensitivity to dress code appropriateness, my sister and I generally gravitate towards monokinis as our compromise.

Since I've lost a bunch of weight and have fairly decent abs and shoulders, which are now my best features, i wear one. I discovered last summer that wearing a one piece or even a tankini hides my best features and highlights my worst, my thighs. So I wear a bikini, even with huge thighs.
