I know the whale was great. I have "Don't Panic" on my wrist. I've considered adding the whale and flower pot to it, as well.

I actually forced my husband to drive me across the island (before a camping trip, mind you) so I could participate in the 2011 Pokemon Championship in Waikoloa. He and our Yorkie waited in the car so I could get my battle on

I made it past the first round then got taken out by some dude from England *sigh*...

Still, I celebrated my experience with a pichu tattoo :drinker:

I'm studying Cognitive Neuroscience (and just applied for my first research grant to record resting cortical activity in individuals with Down Syndrome to compare them to the resting cortical activity of those with Alzheimer's Disease - one of the diseases I want to study in my career).

This is AWESOME!!! Hope you get the Grant.

Haha I was home Saturday night watching Big Bang theory (I have all the seasons) while studying for a Chemistry and Microbiology test....AFTER I turned down going out with friends. Because I would rather study then listen to people that are not as interesting as the infectious diseases I was reading about! lol

I snort when I laugh, and love sci-fi
  • My favorite hobbies are playing WoW (seeing their conventions is a great joy) and going to Comicon... I am going to dress in a blue Star Trek(second generation) jumpsuit (if I have lost enough weight to fit in it by then) at the next Phoenix Comicon. All my friends are nerdy computer geeks and into science too:)

I have a degree in Computer Systems Technology.

COBOL is not a dead language - it's just not appreciated as it should be.

I can still write all my JCL from scratch.

I know what the current SAS date is all the time.

I can no longer watch TV without my laptop and BB.

My first job was a page at our local library. Worked there for four years....

I think this has been the best topic on MFP in, like, forever!

Because... I learned to program in BASIC on a TI-99/4a. Anyone else have one of these?

Learned my BASIC (Beginner's All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) on a Commodore 64.

And no, I didn't have to look up the meaning of the word BASIC....

So reading through the answers, I kinda fall in between. I have never seen Star Trek, or Star Wars or any of the seemingly popular "nerd/geek" entertainment.

But I do have nerdy qualities! Here are just some

    1) I am working on my PhD. in Neuroscience
    2)I have a background in electrical/aerospace engineering
    3) I took minors in statistics and math to avoid taking biology classes in my undergrad
    4) I work in a lab
    5) I own more lab coats then I do actually coats
    6) I am currently in the lab labeling tubes
    7) My lab is currently working on a tattoo design that incorporates the molecular structure of ghrelin with a robot
    8) I love me some READCUBE (if you dont have it and you do research or read journal articles, DOWNLOAD IT NOW. IT IS AMAZING!)
    9) I kinda get giddy when I am coding in SAS
    10) My favourite Teaching Assistant assignment was one where I was assigned to Graduate Statistics:)
    11) My posters in conferences have QR codes
    12) I have a neuroscience blog, and twitter account. Check em out www.neurobites.wordpress.com
    13) I have a thing for dry ice.

    - Because I have a T-Shirt that says "Talk Nerdy To Me"
    - Because I considered setting a journey to Mordor challenge for myself
    - Because I bought a replica of the One Ring for my friend for Xmas and wrapped it elf style in felt and leather. Also I got so excited about it I nearly squealed when she opened it
    - Because I have been known to line up for game releases

The whale is an optimist, whereas the petunias are embittered pessimists. Although they probably consider themselves realists.

I want the t-shirt, as soon as I've lost enough weight, that says:

"There are 10 kinds of people. Those that understand binary, and those that don't"

I don't need to prove it, but I'll give you a small sample:

Because I have a vanity license plate that reads, "NRD4LYF"
Because people who know me at goth/industrial clubs but can't remember my name just call me "Nerd Girl"
I have a d20 and I know how to use it.
Not only do I still play AD&D, I insist on only playing AD&D 2nd edition
I can recite "Monty Python & the Holy Graii" (in addition to many other MP bits)
I have a Simpsons quote for every occasions (The Simpsons applies to *everything* in life!)
When I bought my home, even though I live alone, I made sure that I had enough rooms so I could devote one entire room to books and have a library.
All the books in my personal library are shelved by category.
I have my history degree and actually enjoy writing research papers.
I worked at a university library (until they lost funding for my job)
    I've read "The Silmarillion"
I know that Frank Miller has gone mad with power.
I know that Alan Moore is a demi-god
One of my self-designed tattoos includes Latin and some 15th Century French artwork.
My friends (who are also nerds) frequently have whole conversations in movie quotes from SciFi or Fantasy movies.
I know that Comicon has become a joke and should be called "Everything Con"
I was a paid Renaissance Faire musician for many years. I played authentic music on period replica instruments. (I stopped performing because the lack of historical accuracy at all the faires began to annoy and frustrate me).
    I love opera
    I love classical music
There is more to prove it, but I don't need really to prove it to anyone. It is painfully obvious.

I was bullied mercilessly as a child & teenager for being a nerd. Now I own it. Take that, haters. :D
