Healthy banana cookies

The other banana cookie led me to this recipe.
Makes 30 for 56 calories each 2.4 g fat
Ingredients
3 ripe bananas
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup dates, pitted and chopped
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a large bowl, mash the bananas. Stir in oats, dates, oil, and vanilla. Mix well, and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly brown.

I am super intrigued. I wonder if dried cherries would be ok instead of dates. I don't really see what difference it would make...0

What's the purpose of dates in the recipe? Do you have to use them? I'd rather just use banana and oats, but I don't know what the dates serve as in the cookies.0
