to fat to exersize

hey guys i am having a little trouble,
I would love to get out there and run every day to start off my day but i have two problems
1) i have trouble actually leaving my door,
and when i get the courage to leave the house
2) i am so scared people are going to make fun of me like this super fat chick running and puffing and dying
has anyone else had this problem
how did you over come it?

I struggle with the same feeling. What I try to do is instead jog in my own house. If my schedule could be adjusted, I would run early in the morning, before the sun comes up on back roads. (More private). Also, we should both be more confident, atleast we're trying, right? And that's more than some can say.0

I get it, I do. I used to be 250 and very self concious, Hell I still am. The bottom line is F#$K what everyone else thinks. This journey isn't about them, it's about you. You want to run, go run. Put in some headphones and go kill it. When they're still in plus size clothes and you're in a size 2 you'll be the one chuckling.0

Why not do some workout DVD's in your own home to incorporate some exercise until you feel more confident?

You are never too fat to to get healthy. You should never feel funny about wanting to get healthy. Hold your head high and get out there. Start out walking and lowering your calorie intake. You can do this. Don't let anyone tell you you can't. :flowerforyou:0

I run in the dark at evening for this exact reason! But honestly, even if you're the fatty on a run, at least you're running, and not on the sofa stuffing yourself with junk food! Don't be afraid to step a little outside of your comfort zone, but just remember to only step a little bit over than line each day - it's like exercising, build up to it gradually!
Plus, once you've started getting your fitness up a little, you will feel more confident, and then be able to feel a little more relaxed about it - I was actually smiling on my run the other night lmao! (probably looked a right muppet, but I was enjoying it!)0 -

Hun I totally understand what your saying, but even it was a "skinny" girl running theyd still look anyways! I've been exercising at home, and it's way more comfortable than going out to the big wide world for people to stare at the fat chick walking down the road, even though some may look at "us" and laugh and others may think I'm a total different way and say..."gosh she's big but look at her go, least she's trying" so maybe try doing stuff at home I've been using my wii and its great fun and instead of sitting down watching tv I turn the wii on and even of its 5 or 10 or 1hr at at time at least you'll be doin something. Chin up mate, you'll be fine :-) x0

Just go out and do it chickie. I still feel a little self conscious out jogging but I don't let it stop me. This is my health and I like jogging. If others have a problem with it then its nothing to do with me...its their problem. Good luck and take it slowly. xx0

It was really hard to go to the gym for the first time. I felt like a freak, sweating from walking 2.7 mph on a slight incline when this chick beside me was doing 3.7 on a high incline.
But ya know what? She didn't care what I was doing because she was so concentrated on what she was doing. That's the way WE need to be - to not care what anyone else thinks because if we keep it up - someday WE WILL be the one doing that fast walk or run beside a person that is much slower.
It doesn't matter where we start out in our journey as long as we START and do NOT stop! Good luck!0 -
when I started running, I was almost 300 lbs, I was never worried people would make fun of me or laugh at me, I alway think I inspire every last person who sees me....I envision them saying...wow look at her!! If she can do it so can I!! haha, and now after a year of running it doesn't even faze me anymore.0

Thanks. Triathlon in conjunction with learning how to eat has been a welcomed change from the 200 plus pound twelve year old still living inside. Look my experience tells me this, there are going to be A LOT of uncomfortable situations you find yourself in through out this journey let alone life, and if you let what others think or moreover what you feel others think hold you back from experiencing everything you are going to miss out on things you really really enjoy.0 -
When I go to the gym and I see a very overweight person faithfully coming every day and plodding away on the treadmill, I am proud of them for making the effort! Who cares what everyone else thinks..this is for YOU!:happy:0

You can start off walking. Get your doctor to help you with a lower calorie diet and put a pedometer in your pocket. See how far you really walk in a day. 10,000 steps is just considered healthy. I was doing about 2,000. Each day I increased it by 100. That's all, just 100 steps. Between that and the calorie cut I lost enough to be able to walk on a treadmill, then start to do strength exercises. I still have not lost tons of weight, but my body fat is down from dangerous morbid obesity (in the 80's) to still high but on the chart now (in the 40's). It took two months and a bit of pain, but I dropped one pant size and it is easier to move. I still don't want to go out there and run, but I am losing fat and eventually the weight will go too.0

My thoughts on it were very simple, I get out there and do what I want to do and I hope others are watching. I was catching my breathe one day {this body was not built for running long distance} in the park and had a guy out of the blue walk up to me and ask I stop running the path by him and his girlfriend who were having a picnic. My first thought was that my bouncing belly must be upsetting, he contiued that his girlfriend saw me and was nagging him about their food choices and why they did not exercise more.
As Scott said, you are doing it for yourself not them. Get out there, you will extend your life and maybe someone elses.0 -

Nobody is too fat to exercise. No matter what.
For those reasons you listed that is why I choose not to run outside - I'd rather do exercises at the gym or in my home - you should join the gym and use the elliptical/cross-trainer - it burns up big calories as running would - but protects your shins from the impact of being overweight and not being used to exercise. Also swimming is very helpful in that regards. - This is what I had problems with.
I also have the turbo fire workout which really really kicks me up the bum to workout and I feel so much better for it!
Doing exercises like that will build up your physical fitness until you feel confident to get out there and go outside.
Nobody is judging you - and if they are then they are NOT worth your time. xxx0 -
I'm still weird about going outside to exercise. Took me ages to get it together to go to the swimming pool.
I'm slowly working up the courage to go outside and start running.
DVD's worked great for me, it gave me a structure and a time limit to each workout each day with modified moves to progress through.
If you have access to Rosemary Conley DVD's give the Real Results for Real Women one a go - I fully credit it and calorie counting for my loss to date.
Jillian Michaels 30 day shred is working on toning me up now0 -

Whenever i see someone out and about who is overweight i think, 'wow, good for them'! And i hope the best for them. Anyone you would put you down is an idiot anyway.
I'm overweight too and i'm approaching 35. Not really at the point in my life where i care what people think. I know that's all i worried about when i was younger, so i totally understand. Go out and do your best. Don't put it off like i did!! Good luck:)0 -
I TOTALLY understand what you are feeling, you are NOT alone. You can try the Leslie Sansone Walk at Home videos to start until you get the confidence up to walk outside. And really, so as not to injure yourself, you may want to start with walking, not running. You don't want to put stress on your knees and ankles and back, that event he fittest of people can get when running.
We are all here to support you though, and feel free to friend me. You can do this! And BTW - SCREW those people that would laugh. I've been laughed at too, and it hurts. But they are *kitten*, and will always be *kitten*. And you may be fat now, but you will be skinny someday, and they will still be the jerks they always were.0 -

Running is fun. Walking is fun too. When I weighed 250 I did a lot of walking. A LOOOOOOOOOT of it. Eventually I thinned down enough (and built enough self confidence in spit of the @$$holes that would honk at me while I was walking) that I started jogging. Just a little. Then a little more. Then a little faster... I'm sure you've already figured out where this is headed.
Nobody can build your confidence but you. Period. And sitting around worrying about things won't build squat. Sucking it up, getting out there, and trying. THAT builds confidence, then confidence builds weight loss, which builds more confidence, which builds more weight loss... Again, I'm sure you've already figured out this hamster wheel of success.
Just do it. Just put leave those fears on the couch, while you go for a run. Or walk. Or anything for that matter. It doesn't have to be far, or long, it just has to be. Eventually, as you start stringing those runs together, you'll see results that make you glad you started.0 -
If you feel funny, that's okay. It's normal. It's also okay to start slowly. Why don't you start with walking? Set a goal for walking briskly for 5 or 10 or 15 minutes. Just do that a few times a week. Then do it longer the next week. Once you get used to it, you'll want to do more.
It IS hard to start. Yet, you CAN do it!
And, if you can, tell yourself something positive about your efforts, whether it's "Today I tried my best," or "I'm one day closer to my goal."
If you start thinking or saying positive things, the negative will have less room in your head.0 -
Lots of good tips from other posters. I think the sooner you start the less time you will have to deal with feeling that way. I really hope you don't let others get in the way or stop you from doing what you want to do. You are doing it for yourself not for them. You will gain confidence as you go. Anyways who cares what anyone else thinks, do whats right for you. Good luck with your journey. I wish you much success along the way.0

Yes, and I'd go further and say almost EVERYONE has had this hurdle. About something.
I didn't want anyone to see me running when I started. I began with Couch to 5k, and thought people would laugh when I only ran for 60 seconds then stopped and walked. And that went for outside as well as at the gym.
The reality is... no one cares what you're doing. The majority of people who will see you only see you for about three seconds. They have no way of knowing if you've been running 30 seconds or 30 minutes. Anyone petty enough to put enough thought into making a judgement... well, that says a LOT more about their character than yours.0 -
I started jogging outside @ 400+ lbs. I don't jog inside on treadmills. I hate treadmills.
