I also use Runkeeper - it works well and is free - what more could you want??
It shows you a map of where you ran, overall time, splits, average pace (plus a detailled breakdown of pace), speed, elevation, calories burned and keeps a running total of distance and calories for you as well. It even gives you the option to take photos on your run which it adds to your map in the place where you took them. It all links up to an online account which is where most of the info is displayed. This is mine to give you an idea: http://runkeeper.com/user/cam_l20/profile Though I've had a bit of a break recently due to a sprained ankle. Just started running again this week...
*edit* Forgot to mention that Runkeeper has a function for people who are interval training (e.g. on the C25K programme) - you can set your own intervals and it'll tell you when to stop and start.0 -
RunKeeper is great. It has coaching options to tell you your time/distance/pace/intervals during your run. All of these options you can select or deselect. It also has an option to listen to any playlist on your iPhone. And it is free. I love it0

I use Nike GPS for Iphone and I LOVE IT!0

I like the Garmin Fit App, it cost 99 cents and has all the same features as a Garmin Forerunner. I have used it and ran for as long as 3 1/2 hours and still had battery left. If you decide later to use a foot pod or heart rate monitor with it they have an ANT device that plugs into the phone that will allow you to use any of the Garmin devices, heart rate monitor, foot pod or cadence sensor for cycling,0

Thanks everyone! It was the lack of ipod/music controls in mapmyrun that was a bit of a turnoff to that particular app. I've messed around on the website though to figure out some theoretical routes. I just don't want to be switching between apps when I'm running (I can barely focus on the run as it is so I probably don't need more distractions!).
I figure any app that continually uses the GPS is going to drain my battery - the normal maps app does the same, but what can you do other than get a completely separate GPS like someone else suggested.
Thanks again everyone! Feel free to keep the suggestions coming
The paid MapMyRun has the ability to control the music, the free one doesn't.
I use Mapmyrun. I went with the paid one but the free is just as good. I got it to control the music and don't really bother.
I have done pretty long runs, like 2 hours, with it and still had enough battery. Just lock the phone when you start.0 -
I use MapMyRUN and love it. It's free

SO glad you posted this- I got some great ideas for new downloads.0

I use RunKeeper, which is completely free and works great.
I use Runkepper too! I like how it tells you if you’re on pass and how far you have gone while running outside. I run Pandora too at the same time and it is awesome!
Runkeeper + Pandora here too!0 -
runkeeper! Free, Integrates with my playlist, allows me to do my 1/2 training intervals.0
-
I use Runmeter- it tracks my runs, gives me splits/intervals, tells me my mile markers, etc. Love it.0

The only running app I use is "Zombies, Run!" Worth every penny. I hate doing interval workouts, otherwise.
^^This! I love "Zombies, Run!" It is so entertaining that my run just flies by!0 -
one more vote for team Endomondo! Free and web site is easy to maneuver...0

if you're looking for an app that integrates your playlists then RunKeeper is a free app that works great! I use it on occasion.0

Run keeper is the best. Perfect for running and cycling, no issue with GPS, it tracks distances and pace perfectly, I have measured I have tried all of the free ones, and this is the best (I think) Plus you can have it play music from a certain playlist on your iPod from your phone while the app is still giving you verbal cues, lots of settings on how often you want the verbal cues. Plus, it will post your results immediately to facebook if you turn that feature on... I want credit for all of my hard work0

Me too! I love it!0 -
I'm hoping to start running outside soon (transitioning from the treadmill). What running apps do you like? I don't need anything that'll integrate with a HRM (at least that's not really an important feature for me and I don't think it'll sync with my polar anyway). I mainly want to track distance and pace.
The best rated ones I've found cost somewhere between $1-3 so even though it doesn't seem like much, I don't want to end up buying 3 or 4 (or more) different ones - just seems like a waste.
Thanks!
I use nothing, just nature and my breathing rhythm. try it for a week, you might like it. save your money, concentrate on a breathing rhythm and the sounds of nature, of course if you have any nature around you. if its all cars and trucks that to me would be dangerous having headphones on.0 -

Isn't it amazing? I love this app. I never looked forward to running before I got it. I do wish it told me my pace during the run itself, but eh. I'm too busy collecting first aid kits and sports bras and escaping hordes of zombies to care.
RunKeeper is good but rarely accurately tracks my run. I got serious blips all over the place (like it will track me two miles from where I am and back instantly, messing up my mileage and pace for the entire run). I've read that it's an iOS 4 issue. Sometimes it's better if I disable wireless and turn off the location service feature for everything but runkeeper.0 -
I use Nike+GPS..
yeup, this is what I use also. I tried several and this one works the best for me0 -
I use and LOVE nike+GPS (only cost me 2.99).0
