Physique all the way! I so do not even care what the scale says anymore as long as I am continuing to get smaller, stronger, and healthier.

It's got to be Physique - Seen so many people at the so-called perfect weight who unfortunately are still unhappy because they don't like what they see in the mirror.

at the moment weight is more important for me since i'm still a good 30-40 pounds over fat.
i'm sure the closer i get to my goal weight, that answer will change to physique.

I hear it ALL the time. People are so concerned about the scale weight, but want to look great. What's more important? Looking great DOESN'T always reflect a good number on the scale. In fact some people's bodies change completely while the scale doesn't even budge a pound.
You can reach weight goal and still look and feel "soft" and "flabby". So what happens is you exercise and guess what? The weight goes up!!! So then you go through mental jumping jacks because you want to bring the weight back down, but of course that doesn't help the flabbiness you still have.

If you look great, people DON'T CARE how much you weigh. Only you do.

Right now, weight is more important, but in the long run, physique is. I know that a lot of people say that BMI is a piece of crap measurement, but it's still important to me to be in the 'healthy weight' classification for my own motivation. Once I hit my goal weight (only 10 more pounds!), I'll still be almost at the max. healthy weight for BMI. However, at that point, if I lose more while I focus on toning, great, but if I stay the same weight but have a nice physique, that's great too.
For me, weight is priority until I reach my goal. I want to be mid-range healthy BMI. That's my goal.

Once I'm there, I'm going to work on any physique improvements I want, but not before.

I am the opposite. For me, getting into healthy BMI isn't even on the radar. Body fat percentage and physique are more important, but I would like to drop into the "overweight" BMI category. And I will likely rest there.

So in the short term, I am working on both building my physique and losing enough weight to get to the overweight designator. After that the scale is pretty irrelevant for me. And I can put more focus on physique (and maintaining healthy habits).

Thanks to all who took the time to respond to all my questions. It seems a few people thought I was ignoring the benefits in responses between my posts, but I was trying to get comprehensive information to better make my decision and some of the initial posts seemed focused on only how toning made the body look, or how it could benefit the same areas that cardio did.
The problem is that the things you were saying are the exact things perpetuating a very prevalent myth, and are honestly detrimental to so many women's efforts to be healthy overall, and lose the weight they wish to quickly and safely. That myth needs dispelled at every opportunity.

You could always point to this...
How Much Physical Activity is Needed?
Physical activity is important for everyone, but how much you need depends on your age.
    ADULTS
    (18 to 64 years)
Adults should do at least 2 hours and 30 minutes each week of aerobic physical activity at a moderate level OR 1 hour and 15 minutes each week of aerobic physical activity at a vigorous level. Being active 5 or more hours each week can provide even more health benefits. Spreading aerobic activity out over at least 3 days a week is best. Also, each activity should be done for at least 10 minutes at a time. Adults should also do strengthening activities, like push-ups, sit-ups and lifting weights, at least 2 days a week.

    http://www.choosemyplate.gov/physical-activity/amount.html

This isn't some broscience or something from a muscle mag, this is straight from the Federal Gov't's basic recommendations for everybody in this country. Their target audience is every adult, male or female. Everybody should be doing some form of strength training.

Changing the gov't recommendations for the better and spreading them has been Mrs. Obama's cause, hopefully over time it will catch on more. The old food pyramid era recommendations sucked, the new myplate era recommendations are quite good.

Women's fear of strength training more often than not sabotages their efforts to lose weight and improve their appearance, as they are afraid of doing what is by far the most effective thing they could be doing.

Right now? Weight loss is more important. I have a lot of weight to lose. I will be more concerned about physique the closer I get to a healthy weight.
  • The ideal answer is physique but its weight for me because its just knowing I'm a certain weight that makes me want to do better and reach my goal number. As sad as that sounds.

I think physique for me as long, well at least once my BMI is within the healthy range.

Physique 100%. I'm way more concerned with body composition than I am with weight. When I was younger I was worried about weight, but the more I learn the more I realize it doesn't mean much.

This is seriously my goal. I want to be overweight on the BMI and be so buff it's staggering. I want to make doctors and nurses head's spin when they weigh me. Then I will giggle all the way to the examination room.

    Screw the scale.

Yeah everytime I jump on the scale when I go in for a physical (every year) I wear baggy clothes. Usually it's a female nurse who weighs me, takes my BP and height. Then escorts me to the examination room and asks me to whip off my clothes while she turns he back to get my a gown. Shirt is off by then and I always get a smile.........................
