I can't stand the "talker." The one person who, whenever you're there working out, whether you're busting your *kitten* at the free weights or running your *kitten* off on the treadmill, beelines to come talk. Not just talk and say hello, but have a lengthy conversation. You duck your head hoping they don't see you...But they always do. And the entire time you're there, they chat it up with EVERYONE. No working out. Just talking. And no, they don't work there, lol!
Yep, I know this guy. he stands at my treadmill and talks to me during my 20-30 min session of running. But, I cant hear him because I have my earbuds in. UMMMM, GO AWAY... IM NOT LISTENING...lol0 -
Ms. "All Business" -
This one I like. She comes to the gym in a beat up t-shirt or tank top and some generic workout pants. She doesn't have her makeup done. She doesn't bother with machines. She goes straight to the free weights after her warmup and spends the next hour or so going through a series of resistance workouts you typically don't see women doing, moving poundages that could give a lot of the guys a run for their money. Half the guys in the gym have massive crushes on her but nobody will approach her because the intensity with which she goes at her workouts gives off an air that says "OFF LIMITS! I'M HERE TO GET STUFF DONE!"
Pahhahahaha This is me so hard. I'm glad we are a 'type'. I am not alone! Ms. All Businesses Unite!
We need rings or something.
This is me0 -
The most annoying person is ME! I have been lifting at home but I still go to the gym a few days per week, sit on the recumbant bike and watch tv, it's my baby free me-time and "going to the gym" justifies leaving the baby at my moms for an extra hour. Plus we have no tv at home. No apologies here!
When I was in college, I didn't have cable in my dorm. My roommate and I used to go to the gym to watch the free cable. We did workout some, but we spent an awful amount of time watching free tv!0 -
I am the TV Guy too. I run on the treadmill and enjoy watching the news. I am politically minded and quite opinionated. So, I will go "He said what?!?!?" "OMG, what an idiot!", "Yeah, whatever!" "That's BS!" out loud while the newscaster is reporting some random story.
I am also the Guy With the Million Magazines. I haven't been able to take a day off from exercise--I struggle with that. So instead, I will go on a bike or elliptical and do a less brisk job of it while reading my Entertainment Weekly. And when I am done with one issue, I slam it on my down on the floor where my gym bag is, as if I were slamming down some weights.0 -
I have recently joined the gym and i want to grown up my body so please tell me some special tips.0

Everybody at the gym annoys me
That is why I workout at home.

The "Barbie Army".
A group of girls dressed in coordinated shades of pink, usually donning full make-up, hair extentions and fake nails. Routine usually involves incline walking on the treadmill, whilst hanging on and chatting, then using 2k dumbells for "toning".0 -
The Librarian
Comes to the gym armed with her trusty paperback. Then proceeds to use the treadmill on 0% incline on a less than moderate walking pace for the duration of around an hour whilst reading contentedly. Leaves the gym looking less fatigued than when she arrived.
The Fashionista
Similar to the librarian, although reading matter is of lesser integrity. Proceeds to head straight to the elliptical, as all good barbies should, armed with half a dozen trashy magazines. Generally wears pink and avoids free weights like the bubonic plague.
The Socialite
A regular at the gym, this woman seems to know EVERY staff member there. Spends most of her time gossiping with said staff about working out - yet doesn't quite managed to do very much. An attendee at all social functions held and loves to gossip about other gym users. Often part of a gym clique of middle-aged bored housewives.0 -
The cardio queen -
She's thin as a rail and comes to the gym only to use the cardio machines. She'll go on the treadmill or elliptical for about an hour at a moderate intensity and call it a day.
The attention *kitten* -
She comes to the gym with her makeup done and her gym garb is something that looks more like something a fitness model would wear for a magazine shoot than legitimately work out in. She does't use free weights, only machines, does one or two sets at 3 or 4 different machines, (not high intensity) and then goes to a cardio machine for 20-30 minutes at moderate intensity (not enough to sweat). You get the strong impression she's there to get guys, not to legitimately work out.
Haha these are all my top favorites pet peeves. I don't recall one single moment in the gym that I've not encountered these women.
In addition, here are my observation:
The Sleeping Beauties
Upon entering to the gym, these women goes straight to the locker room strut their stuff on the couch & then lay down to sleep while waiting for their zumba class. Then once the zumba class is over, they again go to the locker room, chat there for a while then goes for a nap again.
The Multitaskers
They're everywhere, from the cardio section to the free weights area. They're seem to be very busy people that can't be bothered, busy with their cellphones while killing the time away on the elliptical, treadmill, stationary bike or on machines while those in the free weights area would lift like 10 reps per set then proceed with their cellphones for about 5 minutes then again lift weights while talking with their buddies.Ms. "All Business" -

OMG that's so very me :bigsmile:0 -
Guys using their cell phones, for stuff not related to music, in the room or during their "rest period" between sets bothers me. Morons.
uh-oh! I use my phone in between sets to log my weights on MFP! Doh!
I do this also.0 -
The list maker, who instead of getting on with their own **** and doing their gym own workout, spend half their time prejudging others for their lifting/life/clothing style.
The list maker groupie, who unthinkly likes post that judgemental “list maker” makes0 -

Im also guilty, but I am using my stronglifts 5x5 app to log my workout reps :bigsmile:0 -

Good thing my cell phone is an old nokia model & I need a computer to log everything here in MFP. The ones that I see are talking, laughing etc on their cell phones0 -

Oh yes I've seen plenty of them everytime I'm warming up in the cardio section or am in the locker room. :laugh:0 -
The Pony Club
There are 3 girls who all come together, they look lovely they are slim and pretty and they all have their hair in these cute ponytails that swish from side to side whent the do treadmill or eliptical. But....
They never break a sweat, they use the lightest of weights, do minimum reps and spend most of the time watching themselves in the mirrors.
Yesterday I happened to be working alongside one of the pony club girls using the dumbells. I happen to glance up at one point and see her in the mirror watching me with a look of horror on her face as the sweat dripped down my beetroot coloured face. We then moved on to the machines. I set the weights on my machine at 35k and did my reps and we moved on, she got on the machine I vacated, did not look at the weight and went to lift it but couldn't budge it. She tried 3 times but nope it wasn't moving, she looked really puzzled at this then it occurred to her....oh it was too heavy...she looked at me, looked at the weight, looked at me again, shook her pretty head and got of the machine without doing anything and walked away.
The urge to do an incredible hulk impression was almost overwhelming.
I admit I lol'd....a lot.0 -
Tarzan lives in my gym 24/7. He was named after being observed doing the infamous chest thumping for effect (minus the jungle roar) without a trace of irony. He is a total exhibitionist and preens more than any woman I know. He gives me detailed instruction on the use of weight machines. He is the only entertainment in my gym which otherwise is the most boring place on earth.0

To the O.P. I like how Race is only mentioned when they are Black. :noway:
Can I get some clarification on this? Are you saying that the people who AREN'T mentioning race are ONLY talking about white people? Not trying to pick a fight here. I'm genuinely confused as to what point you're trying to make.
Some people just look for an argument.
...
It stuck out to me the first time I read the OP as well. He most definitely did what I call "othered" the Somali guys. Whatever. I just let that stuff slide off me. Better that that get labeled as the Angry Black Guy.
The young man just pointed out that about the original post. He wasn't referring to any of the other posts. So to answer your questions, Yes, it's fairly clear that people (in the OP) who's ethnicity wasn't pointed out were probably white. No, he wasn't saying that every other post in this thread was about white people, No, he's not trying to start an argument, just pointing out a conversational gaffe that a million people make a million times a day without being aware that they are "othering" and it might be offensive.

Well said!0 -
My version of the treamill master: Super-skinny older guy who cranks the incline up to max, then hangs on to the front of the machine for dear life while leaning waaay back. I see him every time I'm at the gym. He stays on thing thing for hours!0

I had no idea I was so annoying to others. I come in and run for an hour on the treadmill then leave. On weights days I warm up then do weights on the MACHINES! Yes, it's true - I use the machines and NOT the free weights and sometimes I come in and I ONLY do cardio!!! My bad.
The only people who bother me are the ones who reek of cigarettes or strong perfume - makes it hard to breathe and turns my stomach. Otherwise, I could care less. It's fine with me if someone wants to come in and walk for an hour or do stretches or whatever. It's better than sitting on your butt eating potato chips at home. :flowerforyou:0 -
There is a guy at my gym who does what can only be considered as upside down chin ups. I think he is a gymnast, but he waits until a gym barbie is about then goes upsidedown on a chin up machine. It is awesome to watch but his 80s mullet makes the scene hilarious.
Well it amuses me and that is what counts.0 -
The couple who finishes their cigarettes outside before coming in the gym....then taking 5 cigarette breaks throughout the next hour.
Sorry but I have 0 patience for smokers....and yes I know and have lived with many. Some who have quit, some who haven't, and some who have died.
Know / Knew a lot of people who did not smoke but are dead! Taxes and death are certain :-) each to their own, live and let live!0 -
The "what are you doing?" guy. There's a guy who comes to the gym at my college who gets on an elliptical wearing sweats and a hoodie (hood pulled way up and tightened around his face) and for about 15 seconds every 1-2 minutes goes so hard that it sounds like the elliptical is going to break and then goes a moderate pace. And given that our gym is kept at a balmy 70+ degrees on any given day... I do not understand. He could run outside and still sweat his *** off since it's 80+ degrees outside.
He's doing High Intensity Interval Training. There are many ways to do it, but I'd be willing to bet money that if you ask him, he'll tell you he'd doing the Sprint 8. He'll do 90 seconds of light/moderate work followed 30 secs of all out sprinting, and repeat that for 8 sprints.
As for his clothing, sweating off weight was a big thing in like the 80s. Wrestlers or fighters still do it now to make weight for a match. But I remember as a kid I would see people wearing what looked like aluminum foil sweatsuits. I didn't think this was still a thing but I googled it just now and I see GoFit is still selling a "thermal suit" that looks like the woman is wearing two trashbags. Not sure if she's about to workout or rake my leaves. I'm not saying your guy is wearing one of these getups, but he's probably from the "I'm gonna sweat this weight off" school.
Correct; I do this when I am on the elliptical. HIIT is the way to go.0 -

I have one of these, too. The good thing is, he's cute. But it's still annoying as all ****.0 -
Got on a treadmill yesterday next to a girl, and every 30 seconds or so she would let out this "Woo!" sound. I had to try not to laugh every time she did it.0

Why would she be making that noise?! I tried to rationalize it... Just can't.0
