Berger on why BG rises after eating protein, and why that is not bad compared to carb BG spikes
I saw this link posted on another board to Amy Berger's blog, Tuit Nutrition, on gluconeogenesis, blood glucose rises, and glucagon after eating protein. It explains why BG often rise after a higher protein meal and why that is very different (slower and lower)than the BG spike people see after a higher carb meal. VERY…

looking for T2 friends
Hi All I’m looking for some T2 diabetic friends. I was diagnosed last January with T2. I have about 95 pounds to lose. So I’m pretty new at this. I’m still learning what I need to do & when. But, I will get there somehow. Any friend request, help or support would be great.

Added sugar vs natural sugar
Here in Canada, our labelling shows sugars, but not necessarily just added sugar. I know there are sugars in fruit and veggies naturally. My big question is, does MFP calculate your daily grams using both sugars or just one or the other?

What lancing device do you use?
I've been using the lancing device which came with my Bayer Contour next - it's a Bayer Microlet 2. Well, it broke. And then the spare one I have broke. I can still use it but I have to hold it upside down to *kitten* it. (Not a dirty word! Same word as rooster, means to load and ready.) So I need a new one. I hate this…

A1c
I got my A1c back today and drumroll please.... its 5.4. I am over the moon! All my hard work is paying off finally. (started at 8.7 in July) I really needed this too because I've been sick and using that as an excuse to eat what I want. Between getting to go off my water pill for high blood pressure (yay) and eating out…

Birthday cake?
So tomorrow is my first birthday as a diabetic. My mom is going to expect me to eat birthday cake and ice cream - her attitude is "it's only one day." Well... I know my body can't tolerate that many carbs. I'm not on insulin so I can't bolus for a larger amount of carbs, and I can't suddenly jump up and start exercising in…

Success story: I reverted my diabetes
So here for motivation. I always believed diabetes was a disease that kept on progressing and it could only get worse. Don't be fooled it's not completely cured it can come back if I go back to bad habits but this morning I had my appointment with my endocrinologist. 2 years after my initial diagnosis 50lbs lighter with…

Ketogenic diet
Hello I'm new to this group and I am a type 1 diabetic and on the ketogenic diet. I've been on the ketogenic diet now for two weeks now. I am wondering if anybody has had any problems with their electrolyte balance. I am thinking that my potassium maybe a little low, because my blood pressure has been rising a little. My…

Did anyone catch the "Fasting diet 'regenerates diabetic pancreas'" study?
The story I saw was from the BBC- http://www.bbc.com/news/health-39070183 doing some more searching I found a reddit thread linking to it with more info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/science/comments/5vufpb/the_pancreas_can_be_triggered_to_regenerate/ Fasting portion of diet: -…

Metformin for longevity
I was wondering about people's thoughts on longevity? If you are on metformin, would you continue to take it even if your PP BG was normal? I eat a ketogenic diet to keep PP BG normal. That's normal for a metabolically healthy person and not "diabetic normal" that many doctors seem to go with. I have been eating this way…

is my meter and /or my strips bad?
I have been taking my readings pretty regularly this year ( not so much in the past )..... My readings haven been around 185 this week, which seems high. I started a really low carb program about a month ago. ( I know it takes time ) But at the end of 2015, I was also around 185. So here is why I ask: My strips have…

Glucose spikes
I was flipping between the 3 English speaking channels here in my hotel in Japan last night and a special caught my attention. It was called glucose spikes. You could probably Google it. Anyway, they were explaining how glucose spikes cause heart disease and alzheimers. They talked about low carb diets and how they work,…

Reversing Type 2 Diabetes
I've read that a ketogenic diet can reverse Type 2 diabetes. I have been on this diet for a couple of weeks and I am happy to see my BG have come down to within nondiabetic range. I am concerned however whether I should be lowering my medications and if so, by how much and how quickly. I am on metformin, jardiance and…

Frustrating Morning Numbers
The first 3 or so months of the year my morning BS ran in the mid to low 90s. Since April I have lost 25 pounds. Kept my carbs lower. I also started walking 6-7 days a week and have worked up to 2.5 miles. Now my morning BS is over 100 most mornings. :| Very frustrating.

I've lost focus
on my health and diabetes. I think I'm just burned out from always counting carbs, feeling guilty if I have a little more fat than the doctor ordered. Other than high fasting blood sugar in the morning(it gets within range after being awake two hours), there doesn't seem to be any consequences. I haven't gained any weight,…

I just researched this pancreas divism. Are you having episodes of pancreatitis and that's why they're checking? If you do have this, what is the treatment? Will they operate to correct it? I'm curious because after three years of pancreatic fistulas and pancreatitis, they finally found where the fistula was and operated…

Dawn Phenomenon
So, has anyone had to deal with this? Is there anything you've found that helps? Here is my scenario from yesterday (but is similar every day, just with higher numbers yesterday). I woke up yesterday with a high number 339. I had an Atkins shake for breakfast and by lunch my number was down to 249. I had another shake for…
