  • Just wanted to let you know that I find you amazing and inspirational. A truly amazing achievement. I started at 277 lbs and a few months into the journey plucked up the courage to get into a swimsuit and into the pool. Never looked back, don't know why I worried so much about it as I see all kind of body shapes in the…
  • Rock and roll. It's got no soul. Didn't intend to make a rhyme but there you go.
  • Absolutely you can. It's worked for me for over 2 years now. I work my cals over a week so I can save up for the weekend. As long as you average out over the week and use up spare cals by the end of the week then it will not affect your weight loss. I also think it keeps your body guessing if you don't eat the same amount…
  • Hi I wouldn't enter work related calories burned as that is already a part of your life. I take it you are looking to lose weight, therefore you have become overweight regardless of your work. I work as a nurse and being busy on my feet for 8 hours at a time didn't stop me from becoming overweight. Only log the additional…
  • It's ok if you use your calories over the week and eat them at a time when you could use them more. If you think of your calories as a weekly budget, then you are able to save them. Likewise, if you go over one day, you can make it up before the week is out. The phone app shows your calories over the week which is very…
  • Hi I just logged onto healthstatus.com and for a person weighing 140lbs at just walking pace on horseback it came up with 478 cals for 180 minutes. A little more than riding for 3 hours in a car I suspect.
  • Thanks for the replies, it's encouraging to see what others have done. Fred, congratulations on your hard work and even harder work maintaining. And eheavin0, exercises which can be done indoors are a good idea for him. Thanks guys!
  • Hello Any takers for this one? Maybe I posted it at the wrong time of day, hoping more folk will see it now......
  • If it's an ingredient that I'm unsure about I do a google search and see what answers come up from lots of different calorie websites so I can get a better idea of what ballpark the food item is in. Ultimately it's never going to be completely accurate anyway so I pick either the one that comes up the most as more likely…
  • Hi It doesn't sound like you are eating enough calories. When I weighed 200lbs I was eating 1600 a day and I swim 3-4 times a week for an hour. You will be burning a good number of calories during your swims and you need to fuel your body..have a read of the road map info on these forums to get a better idea of your…
  • Hi I only count potatoes, peas and sweet corn. I don't log all my other veggies ( and I eat lots) because I tend not to eat the majority of my exercise calories so I figure that gives me leeway. Seems to work for me..
  • I looked into this myself. Read that it's okay for things like showering and activities where there is short exposure to water but they are not designed for prolonged periods I.e. swimming. Hope this helps.
  • Hi Tamara I started out at 277lbs last February and what helps me is to think of my calories as a budget to be spent over the week. Most weeks, I'll save up calories for the weekend or a special event so I can have that day of eating extra. That way you get to enjoy the things you want to eat without the guilt as it's…
  • I am looking into getting one (had the fitbit ultra but lost it). I understand it can be used while swimming and I do around 3-4 hrs each week in the pool but will it calculate my calories burned while swimming?? I didn't like the fact that the display isn't as detailed...even having the time on the fitbit ultra was handy…
  • Hello Please do a search on these forums for the post entitled 'welcome to MFP, don't worry there's cliff notes' ( sorry, not sure how to post link) Great post which tells you all you need to know about the best way to go about the process of weight loss. Good thing is, you don't have to over complicate things and stress…
  • I am so enjoying today on these forums.
  • I was speaking factually. And that's a fact.
  • Facts are facts. Fact.
  • One of the best, most succinct and accurate posts I've seen on here in a long time. Thank you for posting this, should be required reading for all....
  • If you we're losing fine before you can change your daily allowance back by going into goals and changing the figure manually. If your weight loss slows then drop slowly until you're losing what you want to lose.
  • Hello Don't panic. Think of your calories as a budget for the week. You spent a bit too much one day and need to tighten your belt (pun intended) the rest of the week. You can make it up with a combination of exercise and a reduction in calories consumed. And now you've learned how many calories are in fast food you'll do…
  • There's a point now and again where I am faced with something I could easily scoff down. But I want my new lifestyle and the joy it brings MORE than whatever momentary pleasure is in front of me. You need to want to do this more than you want to binge on that piece of cake. Being on track and seeing the changes makes you…
  • Hi Well done for your weight loss so far, I can see you are committed to bettering yourself. Personally, reason number 3 is the best on your list. Forget high/low carb/fat, just enjoy your food within your calorie budget. Add lots of fruit and veg to your diet but as this works best when it's sustainable, enjoy your food…
  • It's never easy tackling a deep seated issue with food. You have to want to do this MORE than you want to binge eat. Just think how good it would feel to know that you have the control over food not the other way round. I would argue that food is the hardest addiction to have as you are faced with it every day and you need…
  • Patience and persistence pay off. Just do it X
  • Hi I work nights from time to time and I work my calories from midnight to midnight but I also think of my calories as a weekly budget. If I eat over one day and under the next it doesn't matter as long as I'm within my weekly calories. This works on normal weeks as well. Hope this helps
  • This comes once a year and it's not the end of all things if you put a wee bit weight on over the holidays. As long as it's not your normal lifestyle then all's well. Enjoy!!
  • You said it yourself...staying 'current' means being a slave to trends. Trends come in and out of fashion. What you are punting ( and have done so in a previous post) is the latest trend. No one food is the 'villain'. This kind of thinking is old school
  • Hi I hope this doesn't sound rude but you are his mum and as such, you control what he eats (at least when he's with you). Just try to incorporate fruit and vegetables into his diet and get active as a family. Swimming and bike rides are enjoyed just as much by kids as adults. You are right not to want to give him a…
