Calculating TDEE & macros --- whaaaaat?
I tried to calculate my TDEE and got *three different responses* from three different calculators! How in the world is a person supposed to know what is correct? I input the same metrics into each calculator and set each to the lowest activity level option (I'm not sedentary but I didn't want a calculator assigning a…

Cardio and depression
Is this a thing or just something weird specific to me? A few months ago I started feeling really poorly after cardio (Zumba specifically). The class would start out okay but as the class went on I would find myself glancing at the clock over and over again, and wanting to leave. My regular class is full of friendly…

Overweight fitness instructors
Does it turn you off from a class to see that the instructor is overweight or obese? Speaking about group fitness. On a message board I'm on, there are a lot of instructors complaining they can't get work because they're overweight and should be given a chance because they can "bring it" as well as anyone else. Am I…

Why is sugar the devil?
I see SO MANY posts from people advocating that sugar is the devil. I see so many products that are "sugar free" and instead have the artificial sweeteners. Why is sugar the devil? Did I miss some "scientific breakthrough" that is now claiming sugar is evil and is the cause of all the world's woes?

Motivation vs Inspirationn (a rant)
I get frustrated with people constantly demanding help with "motivation". Motivation: the reasons behind why a person acts a certain way, the general willingness of someone to do something To be motivated to do something means you WANT TO DO IT. If you're not motivated to lose weight, gain weight, stay healthy, exercise,…

Cardio questions
A couple of questions on cardio: 1. I need to do cardio to maintain lung capacity as it helps with my asthma. Is there a way to determine the minimums punt I should be doing per week? 2. I was a at a weight plateau (no change on the scale nor in measurements) for a solid month. I abruptly stopped going to zumba because it…

How do YOU judge your fitness level?
I was trying to figure out if I am "fit" or not. My BMI says I'm obese, my pants size says I'm not obese (not even plus sized - still single digits). My husband is ex-Army and they have fitness tests, so naturally I looked those up. There's stuff I can do, and stuff I can't do. There's people who I know that can do all of…

Looking for lifting program suggestions
Could someone help me find a lifting program that I can purchase and follow? Preferably progressive lifting, lifting heavy and low reps I guess is what I want. I am looking for strength but I would like some curves and definition in my muscles - being strong by itself isn't really enough, but it's definitely very…

Is there an app for that?
I searched briefly and didn't find what I was looking for but I'm not sure if I was just not searching correctly. I'd like to lift but only know a few basic exercises. A personal trainer is not an option for a number of reasons and I'm not walking up to a random in the gym to ask for help. I prefer group fitness but the…

Settings question
Is there a way to configure MFP to work on the TDEE method and to NOT automatically subtract your exercise calories?

Bulky muscles versus lean muscles
Can someone break it down for me and explain what makes muscle look big and bulky (like a powerlifter or bodybuilder) versus slender and lean (like a dancer)? Does one kind of muscle have fat in it to bulk it and the other doesn't?

Confused on MFP method vs TDEE method
MFP sets me to 1200 calories/day. This would be net calories. According to the calculator on IIFYM (Had to use the Athletes formula since I don’t know my current body fat %), my TDEE is 1771. For fat loss, (TDEE – 20%) it sets me at 1417 calories/day. This would be total calories. Just to use round numbers… If I use MFP…

Anyone on Synthroid? Share some tips?
Hi all, Is anyone on Synthroid or had success with it? I've only been on it for about 2 weeks, so I know it will be at least another month before it starts doing whatever it's going to do and who knows how much after that before I notice if anything is going to happen. I'm VERY active and continued to gain weight, even…

Protein shake questions
I am a very active girl (I'm doing *something* for at least an hour a day, 6 days per week, and often am doing 2-3 hours of activity). Should I be drinking protein shakes? I know they don't turn me into a muscled-beast of a woman, so there's no concern there. I just don't know if it would be helpful for me to buy the…

Smoothie mixer/blender recommendations please!
Hi all, I finally have convinced my husband to try a smoothie. Granted, it was a smooth at the renaissance festival, so probably not the healthiest one, but it was still delicious. Anyway, we've been talking about getting a machine to make our own smoothies. I was showing him the popular ones - the NutriBullet or the Magic…

Design your own 30 day challenge?
Has anyone designed their own 30 day challenges? I'd like to create my own, using hints specific to me, but I don't want to make it so hard that I can't compete it. Is there a formula somewhere that I can use to design a difficult, but doable challenge?

Explain diets that don't count calories to me
How do diets like Atkins work if you're not counting calories? I don't think everyone that has followed it has been a flat out failure - otherwise the products wouldn't sell. Since weightloss seems to be all about calories in < calories out, how does weightloss happen if you're not counting calories? (No I'm not interested…

Cheese
Cheese has become my current food fixation. No idea why but whatever, it's yummy. Sadly cheese is high calorie and I really love those little Colby cubes. Seriously who eats only four cubes of cheese and calls it done? So I'd love to hear your ideas for meals and snacks with cheese. No cottage cheese though - can't stand…

Can you follow TDEE with an inconsistent activity level?
I'm interested in trying out the IIFYM way. However my activity level is very inconsistent and since TDEE is taking in your exercise I wasn't sure if it would work for me. - desk job - when time and health allow, I dance, zumba and horseback ride. Not all at once but sometimes more than one thing in a day. - I'm in…

Random cravings and dislikes of food/drink
Does anyone else experience really random cravings and food dislikes? Out of nowhere I've been craving vanilla Greek yogurt and chopped fresh strawberries. The cravings are always very specific too. Eating strawberry yogurt won't cut it. I will also abruptly lose the taste for something. I was a regular soda drinker until…

Calorie deficit questions
I work out in the evenings and sometimes there just isn't enough time or energy to eat back my exercise calories. When this happens, I go to bed with a large calorie deficit for the day (700-1000). Should I eat extra the next day? Do I try to make a weekly goal instead of daily?

Trouble getting official diagnosis
Hi all I have reason to believe I am hypothyroid. My thyroid level tests arguably normal and arguably hypo depending on what range you're going by. I have a TON of symptoms. I'm unable to get an appointment with an endocrinologist. I keep trying and they tell me they won't see me without an official diagnosis. My PCP is…

30DS question
I'm just curious about 30 day shred and didn't see an answer. What makes it work? It's a short workout. My MFP friends who use the workouts are burning under 200 cals, so its not a big burner. However, I've seen LOTS of success stories from people following the video. Would anyone mind explaining to me about the exercises…

Taking measurements correctly
Since my weight is absurd, I'm giving up on the scale and will start tracking measurements. Could someone please tell me what body parts to measure and the proper way to do the measuring?

Doing planks correctly without a mirror
I know how to do planks correctly. However if you're doing them for a while and are pushing your strength your farm fails. Or at least mine does. When muscles get tired something can feel right and just not be. Is there anything I can do as a check on my form? A mirror is also not an option.

Group fitness instructors & talking
When you hear the "You can do it" You're so amazing!!" stuff in fitness class, does anyone else ever feel like shouting back and saying, "I know so shut up and let me do it!"? Or feel a little creeped out when an instructor talks about how sexy you are (talking to the group in general and saying stuff like "you're all sexy…

Why is common advice to lift heavy?
Just curious... I see a lot of advice responses where the person suggests lifting but to lift heavy. Why lifting heavy instead of lighter weights + more reps?
