Nutrition Label Question
Probably a stupid question, but I bought a bag of small (precooked, frozen with shell and head on) shrimp, 500 grams. The label says 99 calories per serving, which is 125 grams. After I eat a portion (125 grams), should I weigh the inedible shell and heads, and subtract it from the 125 grams? They weight almost 45% of the…

Leftover Veggies = Veggie Stuffed Eggs
I seem to always have some leftover veggies. Like lentils, black beans, red kidney beans, frozen mixed medley, etc that I usually just throw into my salads. But today I decided to make some veggie stuffed eggs. I hard boiled 3 large eggs. Then I just threw the leftover veggies into a mixer, added a scant 1/2 teaspoon of…

Fiber
Today, I changed my settings to track fiber instead of sugar. After looking over my meal diary for the past 2 months, and to my complete shock, I am eating very little fiber. I thought that with all those salads and green leafy vegetables I was eating, that would give me all the fiber I need. Wow, was I wrong. I really do…

Bar Code Accuracy
Just bought 1/2 pound of large, peeled tail on shrimp from the Publix seafood counter. I like Publix for their freshness and quality. I scanned the bar code and got a huge surprise. "Wal-Mart - Jumbo Cooked Shrimp Peeled & Deveined W/Tail on 26-30, 8.48 oz (84 g)" Are they actually getting the same shrimp from the same…

Are the manufacturer's nutrition facts labels for cooked or uncooked weight?
I assume that if the food is in an uncooked state, then the nutritional values on the label are for uncooked portion sizes. I also assume that it is for the edible portion only. But I don't want to assume anything. I know that these are silly questions, but I am not sure that I am measuring my amounts correctly and may be…

Mine was deli sliced roast beef, egg beaters omelet, and mixed cantaloupe and honeydew melons. Total 192 calories. Lots of room for a nice snack this afternoon.

Lots of great recipes here, but
I sure wish that the nutritional values were posted more often. Most do not include this data.

Silly Question About Food Labels
I just bought a small bag of pre-cooked chicken drumettes. The label says the calorie count is 196 calories for 100 grams. Is that just the edible portion only, or the entire drumette? Should I weight the bones, then subtract that from the 100 grams?

Three Bean Salad
I just made a standard three bean salad, using .25 cup each of sugar, apple cider vinegar and sunflower oil for the dressing. Turned out 100% yummy. Makes 5 servings at 219 calories a serving. Therein lies the problem. Most of the calories in this dish are in the dressing. But only a small fraction of the dressing (that…

Calories in boiling versus stewing
Is there any real difference in the calorie count between boiling and stewing? I like to boil chicken legs, and use the meat only for salads, noshes, etc. But it often tastes so bland. If I stew the legs in a small amount of broth, would the calorie count dramatically increase?

What single food is the most nutritionally perfect?
While no single food is nutritionally perfect, is there one single food that comes close to being the most nutritionally perfect? (ie has the best ratios of vitamins and macronutrients) Liver? Brown Rice? Legumes?

Calories in Omega 3 Oils
My doctor wants me to take more omega 3 oils for high triglycerides. I have no problem with that, but it adds about 200 calories to my daily intake. As I try to keep to 1,500 daily, that is a significant percentage of my daily calories. Yes I could take the oils in pill form, but I prefer a cold pressed natural organic…

Night Time Hunger
Why do I get so hungry at night. My diet is excellent during the day, and I eat more than enough. But around 9pm each night, I become ravenous. I mean starving. No little snack will quell it. There has to be some explanation as to why. Blood sugar is just fine. But the hunger is immense. Never during the day. Just an hour…

Mangosteen Fruit
I know that there are 63 calories in 100 grams of Mangosteen fruit, which is one of my favorite fruits. But after several Google searches, I can't find anywhere if that is the weight of only the edible flesh, or the weight of the entire fruit before eating. For those who have never had a mangosteen, it has a hard peel, and…

A bit discouraged
My gastroenterologist wants me to drink 1/2 cup of prune juice and 1/2 cup of apple juice twice a day, morning and night because of some diverticulosis issues. The problem is that equals 325 calories a day. That is a lot, considering I am on a 1,500 calorie a day diet. Subtract the 325, and it does not leave too many…

Recipe Makeovers
I am sure this has come up from time to time, but what are some of my fellow MFP'ers recipe makeovers. I am always looking for creative ideas to half the calories and fat from favorite recipes without sacrificing taste and texture. I am getting quite tired of my same old boring standard go to meals that seem to fill my…

Understanding the USDA Site - Please help
I am craving a sparerib, but I just don't understand the USDA site. Can someone please help. Does the following weight include the bone or not? Seems like most of the weight is the bone. If it does not specifically say with bone, am I to assume that this is the meat only? Thanks in advance. "Pork - Pork, Fresh, Spareribs,…

Calories in Micorwaved Potato Chips
Could this be right. I bought one of those microwave potato chip makers. I used 4 small white potatoes that weighed 250 grams pre slicing and cooking. When cooked, the weight was 55 grams. To determine calories I went to the USDA site and found the entry "Potatoes, microwaved, cooked in skin, flesh and skin, without salt.…

Awkard TMI Question - Can't expel gas
