Anybody have whooping cough/pertussis?
Hi all, I am in week 4 of pertussis, confirmed by the lab this past week. (well, it was walking pneumonia first, don't know if the pertussis started after or in tandem). Don't yell at me - I got a dtap booster in May, it just didn't work. Anyhow, it's been a month now since I have done any exercising. I am wondering if…

365 days of logging in - 75 lbs down, with pics
Happy one year anniversary to me. A year ago, I made the decision to make a change. I had friends starting their journeys at the same time, and we were there for each other (and still are). Without them, I don't think I would have taken that first step of starting, which I think was the hardest of all. How did I do it? I…

Opinions re: bf% and calculators
Okay, admittedly, July wasn't great. I didn't exercise much due to some health issues, but we also moved (lots of packing, cleaning, moving, cleaning, unpacking), so I didn't change my cal goal and stuck at 2200/ day (I am basically maintaining, looking to lose more bf). Anyhow, I take measurements the first of every…

1 yr results, without netting below BMR
I posted this in the main forums, but also wanted to post here to show that you don't need to starve yourself to lose weight. I started this journey set on MFP at a 1lb/week loss, which gave me a net of around 1600. As I lost weight, that goal went down, but once it was under 1500, I felt I needed more, so I manually…

does 6months of eating below bmr require reset?
I am trying to help a friend, I would guess her bmr to be around 2050 (I am getting actual numbers). She has been eating at 1500 for about 6 months, no loss. No previous vlcd. Do you think a reset is necessary in her case, or can I advise her to start at 15% cut?

Anyone ever sprain an abdominal muscle?
Just wondering if that might be what I've got going on. Did my strength training on Tuesday (deadlifts, lat pulldowns, squats, dumbbell rows, side planks, cable crunches). On Weds morning I woke up with what feels like a bruise in my lower left abs, about 2 inches out from my belly button. Ran 3 miles yesterday, it felt…

Help me put together a routine from Yoga Shakti - Shiva Rea
I just "checked out" Shiva Rea's Yoga Shakti from my library. I typically run and lift, and while I do stretch after, I have noticed the last few weeks that my diapragm is really tight, and I am getting pain/stitches very early in my runs, and even on walks. I figure I need some good stretching. Are there some exercises on…

asthma and exercise
In January, after 3 weeks of not being able to breathe, I was diagnosed with mild asthma and put on a daily inhaler. After a week on it, I was able to exercise again. Been doing well since, until I got a cold last week (which is what the pulmonologist thinks triggered the January episode) and now my asthma is out of whack…

What BMI looks like
If any of you are feeling like your goal is unattainable, or like you won't look good unless you get into a BMI under 20, skim through this photo album. http://www.flickr.com/photos/77367764@N00/sets/72157602199008819/ It just illustrates so well how differently people carry weight, and how good people can look despite…

What to do about my running shoes
I got new running shoes at the beginning of the year, and yesterday had my first non-treadmill run in them. By evening my middle toe felt like the toenail was going to fall off (it isn't, but that's the way it feels). I hadn't had issues on the treadmill, so I assumed they fit right, but I guess not. This is a new style…

swiss ball instead of incline bench?
Hi all, I am adding to my "home" (work actually) gym. There is a cable machine, and some cardio machines. I plan to add a swiss ball and dumbbells. One of the workout plans I have been looking at uses an incline bench for many of the exercises. Can I use the swiss ball instead of an incline bench? It may sound like a…

Shopping - what are your must haves?
Doing some after Christmas shopping because I got some reward money for losing the weight I have to be used however I need to/want to. I don't belong to a gym and do not have a lot of room at home. I do have access to a little exercise room at work that has a cable machine, treadmills, and a elliptical. I use that, do body…

metatarsalgia
I have had inflammation in my foot for over two weeks now. It started 8/18, not bad, didn't know what it was, did a 25 minute run on 8/19 (2 miles), then it was worse over the weekend. Went to an orthopedic clinic on 8/22; without imaging, he said he thought it was inflammation in my connective tissue. My chiropractor…

Gift ideas for lifters
Hey all, my 19 yo cousin is into lifting, is away at college for his freshman year (read travel light and limited space in a dorm room). He's been lifting for 2-3 years now, so I have no doubt he has any basic stuff (clothes, bag, shoes, etc), but I am wondering if there are any great gift ideas of things you've discovered…

Doctor office NSV
I had a doctor appt yesterday for the first time since May. I began my weight loss journey in June. When the nurse input my weight a big error message popped up on the screen warning to double check the weight entered as this is a 16%+ difference from the last weight entered. The nurse goes, "you said ONE-76, right?" and I…

What do you try to burn while on maintenance?
For those of you on maintenance, do you have a daily target of how many calories to burn (or if a time target, what do you avg for daily burns)? Just wondering what is reasonable to keep up every day. I see some people with burns of 1300+ every day and that seems so unrealistic for me (one day, let alone to maintain). I…

Who's running their first 5K this wkd? (10/29-30)
Hi all, I am running my first 5K this Sat, 10/29. I am nervous and excited. It is outdoors, will be 40'F at race time. Chilly! I didn't really research the race, just knew it was near my house, and then after registering and looking at last year's results, came to realize it is a pretty competitive race. Ack! So, I may be…

I feel pretty!
I am feeling awesome today. I am rocking my new size 12 jeans which are fitting comfortably, not snug, and a size M top. I bought a bunch of clothes at a rummage sale, mostly size L, but noticed when I was putting this one on this morning that it is an M (and even though it is a fitted top, it isn't too tight!). Feeling…

Android running app that works well with Pandora
Hi all, I have been using runtastic to track my runs, mostly for determining distance and pace. I run this as well as Pandora while running, but lately more than half the time I finish my run to find that runtastic paused partway through and is waiting for me to tell it to restore the session. That is soooo frustrating!!!…

NROLFW question re: equipment
I am thinking of getting the book and starting the New Rules of Lifting for Women. I don't have a gym membership, so I am wondering what kind of equipment is necessary for the workouts outlined in the book. Thanks!

Question re: lifting
I still have about 40 lbs to lose. I've been running 3x/week, and sometimes doing 30DS in between. I have been looking at Amazon reviews for The New Rules of Lifting for women after reading about it on here and am interested in maybe doing that program 3x per week, doing running 3x per week, and having 1 rest day. My…

Losing faster than MFP goal
So, I know the question of, what should I set my goals at, or how much should I aim to lose per week have been asked before. I also know that people will look at the title of this and say, you're losing fast, awesome, no complaining. Background: When I started in June, I had 64-84 lbs to lose, depending on what I think is…

Sweat is frying my hair!! Help!
I wear my hair in a ponytail when I run, and it is long enough that the ends are on the back of my neck and get sweaty. I've noticed that the ends are now getting very dry/brittle, like I've taken a straightener or other heated device to them (which I don't). I can't shower immediately after as I run during lunchtime at…

34 lbs down in 3 mos, with pics
I don't have any good photos of me at my peak weight, but did manage to find one where I'm up there, maybe 210-215# from fall of 2009. In May 2011, I hit 224, which was my HW. June 1 I started on MFP. I am down 34 lbs, and 2 pants sizes. I've been feeling like I'm not making progress, or like I should feel different, then…

Body fat calculator
Has anyone who has had their body fat measured in any other way ever used the fit2fat body calculator? http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/bf/ Just wondering how accurate it is for overweight people, since I still have a lot to lose, but it seems to think my body fat isn't nearly as bad as I think it is in my head. So if…
