    Good Afternoon,

    I've been struggling with weight for most of my adult life. I tend to internalize conflict and eat when I feel repressed or oppressed. The last 5 years have been tough for me and I went from 172 lbs to over 260. This puts me into the "Lose 100 lbs club" :smile:

    Things have started to shift and I feel like I can put significant effort into getting healthier in 2015. I'm optimistic that the support of a group like this can help me as there is most likely people here with similar experiences and we can assist each other throughout the process.

    Happy Winter Solstice to all!!
    After today we gain daylight each day. The tide has turned. My sympathies to all who suffer with SAD. This day is what gets me through December. Knowing that by mid January the days are noticeably longer.

    While I have not been posting much I have been checking in every day. There is so much going on in all of your lives I feel a bit guilty about not doing more for personal responses.

    So I will just get to my Sunday Share: My name is Lori, age 54, married. My top weight was 297. Am now down to 200. For the last couple of weeks I have been just doing maintenence. I am just not ready to climb back on the diet wagon. I plan on going back to 1400 calories in the new year. I am still going to the gym every day for a 90 minute workout. Staring next week I will be changing my workout routine to get ready for a triathlon I am participating in July. It will be my first competition and I am truly excited about it.

    First of all welcome to all the new people. You have found a great group of supportive people in this group. I find lots of help here and I am sure you will too. Stop by and post and tell us of your successes and stumbling blocks….we all have both.

    @Nettie Great job of getting the terrific new numbers. Soon the time will come and you will be telling us about this sweet new baby. I am excited for you. Keep up the good work.

    @Kelley Soon you will be at your folks quietly enjoying the country and some good R+R and family time. Take a deep breath; you will make it.

    @Tom I remember not liking having to read Viktor Frankl in college, but it is one of the things that has stuck with me the most. Great quote.

    AFM: I am Barbara (Barb). I have been here a couple months and am finally flirting with getting back on my ticker so my weight losses will actually be visible. Hopefully, this will be the week, though with this crazy weekend taking DH to the hospital with chest pain it has not been the best for my food choices. My first goal is to get onto that ticker, September goal, be significantly slimmer for my son’s wedding (I need to quantify that). Final goal is to be healthier and more active.

    With DH home and “back to normal” I should be able to do better with my calorie charts and paying attention to what I need for me.

    I gotta get those “check marks” going. Niki: I do love lists and checking things off, so you are right on target with that in my book.

    December Challenge:

    Calories under goal: 18/31
    Salad a day: 10/31 I have lost track.
    Exercise: Dismal

    Welcome to all the new names I’ve spotted on this thread the past few days …
    Stop back often and join into our monthly challenges if you’d like.

    @Robinse and @Everyone … is it too early to talk about our challenge goals for January? I know we decided to keep our calories at goal (plus or minus 100) and report that every time we post … and we added an All-in challenge that was individual for everyone. Are we staying that way or does someone have an idea for a group challenge?

    AFM … calories challenge 19/21 thus far.
    All-in Challenge … well, I cooked up a storm today and made a mess of the kitchen so right now I’m behind again. However, I still have time before bed to do KP and be back on track.

    Sunday Share … It’s been a while since I’ve done one … but then, I tend to share a lot everyday, don’t I. Anywho, here goes … My name is Niki, and yes it is a combination of the first couple of letters from my first and last name. Everyone called me that at one job I had for 25 years and it just stuck. I am 69 years 9 months and 4 days old today. I’ve suffered from SAD for many years and there have been some where I’d get worse right around this group of shortest days that coincides with Winter Solstice and would have a hard time shaking it off until February. This year, I’ve felt blue but haven’t ‘taken to my bed’ and that’s a good sign. I truly believe that part of the reason I’m standing firm this year is this group and the almost daily connection I make with you, dear reader and poster on Robin’s Thread. The goals I’m striving for because of this group have kept me motivated and feeling more upbeat in general. Also … I am doing my little calisthenics every day, eating better, and getting outdoors during daylight much more than I did in the past.

    It seems like the more I am cooking for myself instead of getting restaurant food, the more I am reverting to the dishes I grew up on. Today I made that Russian Fish soup (Ukha) I mentioned a few days ago. The salmon skeleton was in my freezer and I didn’t want to cook with it until it was completely defrosted. I made 6 cups of soup for me and an extra cup of broth for my cats. My mom used to make the soup when my dad brought home a nice fresh catch of big fish like pike and salmon … and she would freeze some good skeleton with fish head to make the Ukha for us around Christmas and New Year. I only had the one skeleton that I stumbled across one day at the fish market … but oh, the delicate and delectable taste of that bowl I had for dinner tonight … if I closed my eyes I was transported back to my mom’s kitchen table and could actually see my folks enjoying their portions as we all gathered around and commented on every spoon we ate.
    Wow … a big share tonight.

    @niki--it's great that you are doing so much cooking from scratch. It's so much healthier than buying all of the processed food from the grocery store. I really wish I enjoyed cooking more, but for me it;s always just another household chore.

    @barb--happy to hear the DH is home!

    @lori--good to hear from you; I was wondering where you'd gotten off to but figured you were busy trying to get Christmas orders completed. Yay for longer days ahead!! I'm so looking forward to NOT going to and coming home from work in the dark. I'm very excited for your tri!!

    @mara--yes, the NYC race was a blast! It was extra-special b/c I got to share the experience with susan and laurie from this thread. Susan and I had met once prior when she visited chicago for work, and I finally got to meet laurie after 3 years on this thread together. Two incredible ladies--I really hope we get to make it to a similar event next year--perhaps with some additional folks joining in the fun.

    @kelley--sounds like a fun day with friends. :smile:

    I'm jealous of all of you who have finished your Christmas shopping. That's my goal for tomorrow.

    For the new folks, I am karen--a HS English Lit teacher from Chicago. I'm married with one fur-baby--a great big lap dog named Gunner.

    Today a couple of friends and I went downtown to watch the Bears game. Of course they lost, but we had fun pub crawling near Soldier Field. I managed to keep within calories, though just barely. We also got in a good amount of walking while looking for new bars to explore.

    I didn't get to any of my cleaning goals, but DH cleaned the bathroom. Tomorrow I will get the throw rugs and bedding washed before I head out to do the shopping. I would also like to get to the gym, but it will depend upon how long the shopping takes.

    Cleaning Goals:
    1. clean fish tank
    2. clean off dining room table
    3. file paperwork/bills
    4. wash throw rugs and bedding in spare bedroom
    5. vacuum couch (under all cushions)
    6. drop off bag of clothes to GW
    7. clean out shoe basket
    8. sweep/vacuum entire house
    9. clean fridge
    10. clean bathroom DONE BY DH

    December All-In:
    Under calorie goal: 19/21 days (goal is 28/31 days)
    Workout: 5/21 (goal is as much as possible)
    8k over Winter Break (not sure what day) in 56 minutes (Thanksgiving 8k was 56:49)

    Welcome to all of the new people who have found us. If you check in often you will soon feel right at home here, and find lots of new friends, too.
    Being sick last week really messed up my count for the December challenge. I know I only missed 1 day of exercise, I have messed up on the water a lot, but have been in the ballpark on calories.
    I have all of my Christmas shopping done except DH's gift. I got the wrapping done today. Gotta love the dollar store gift bags.
    I still have to make 3 big floor pillows. Ten years ago I made floor pillows for all the grand kids for Christmas. Every couple of years, I have to make some more to catch up. Looking forward to a busy, fun week.

    Hello, I am glad to have found this group it seems to have many nice people. I have been in myfitnesspal for three days now and seem to be doing okay. I am staying bellow my mark though. I was told to have around 1200 to 1500 calories and not even getting 1200 on most days. Don't know if that is good or not. My name is Edna and I weigh last 425 lbs but that was in February so not sure of my true weight now. I am disabled because of my weight and cannot walk more than 50 feet. I plan on changing this by losing weight and having the gastric Bypass surgery. I have two boys and a wonderful husband who support me in my challenge. Today had a pretty good day there wasn't any pain and I was able to stay awake most of the day. I have Sleep Apnea and that is a challenge for me.

    @talinaklocke I went to a seminar on the 17 and it explained all of the surgeries. I have been told the gastric sleeve is a very effective way of losing weight. Because of my weight I will probably be doing the Lap Gastric bypass surgery.

    @Smekavutikul Welcome to the group, I have only been here one day but it seems to be a great group of people.

    @Barbara I am glad your husband is doing better

    @Niki I don't know how you do it, cooking drives me crazy it just makes me hungry, But I cook a meal for my family and then I have my meals that I have picked up for my self. I really don't know how I am going to survive Christmas without breaking my diet.

    @Lori It sounds like your on the right track. Diet isn't easy but when taking it one step at a time it is possible.

    @Spacialcoogs welcome to the group, I am new here as well and everyone has been really nice and easy to talk to .

    @L=Edna so glad you returned :) It is funny your trying so hard to get in "all" those calories and NOT succeeding! May I have some of your extra calories? Nah just kiddin!

    I found a cake I baked early last week covered in foil, still in the glass pan I baked it in, under a pile of cooking sheets and other assorted pains today. I was pretty desperate for weets today while fixing dinner, and the other other sweet in the hou se was ice ceam.......

    Feeling bad I didn't eat enough calories so ended up eating some more around eleven, but still didn't go over my calories so I guess that is good :blush:

    Good Morning and Happy Monday!!!! Hello my beautiful and wonderful friends. It's been way too long and I've missed you guys soooo much. Sorry for the long post, but wanted to share everything that's been going on. Plus, it will give a little history to the new folks I haven't had a chance to meet too.

    As you know, I accepted a new job with Honeybaked Ham. I lived in Atlanta for 18 years working 12 of those years with Arby's before moving to Las Vegas to work for Caesars Entertainment. The casino industry wasn't for me and I accepted a great job with Capriotti's Sandwich Shop. While it was a good job, I knew I missed my friends back in ATL plus my parents are down in Sarasota, FL. When this new opportunity opened up and it took me back to the southeast, I had to grab it.

    I flew back to Atlanta the Friday after Thanksgiving. On Saturday, I went straight to Toccoa, GA to spend the weekend with my friends. Thank you KAH/Kelley for sharing with the group about Dwain's passing. It was an extremely emotional weekend as I knew the cancer was terminal at this point. It was only a matter of time. Dwain died on 12/9 and the services were later that week. I cannot tell you the amount of people he impacted in his short 42 years. I was completely in awe of the outpouring of love from their community. There is something to be said about small towns that's for sure. Whether you believe in God or a higher being or don't believe at all, I truly believe I was brought back to GA to be there for my best friend and her kids. I moved to Las Vegas right after he was diagnosed and now I return as he leaves us. It's been a very emotional time to say the least.

    Regarding the job, I've already been with Honeybaked for 3 weeks. It's been CRAZY since they do 70% of their annual sales in November/December. The amount of business they do is insane. The people are super nice. I haven't had much chance to meet with them or even talk because everyone is trying to keep our stores in product. I've got a decent office and the corporate office is located in a great city called Alpharetta. Shops, restaurants, mall, etc. . . are very close by. A big part of my coming back was not wanting an hour plus commute again. Luckily, I found a rental 7 miles from the office. Now those 7 miles could still take 20 minutes or so, but that's OK. The commute has been OK so far minus one night that took one hour. Stupid holiday traffic!!!! Shop online people! LOL!!!

    Regarding the move, it's been OK for the most part. I've been staying with a girlfriend who lives on Lake Lanier, but it was about 30 miles from the office so the commute wasn't the best. I loved spending tme with her though and appeciated the hospitality. The car transport was a week late and we couldn't get hold of the driver so the broker found another company and picked it up instead. The movers arrived on Wednesday so I finally got to sleep in my own bed. YES!!! Of course, I have boxes everywhere.

    Cyrus finally arrived on Saturday. I had him stay out in Vegas with my sister so he could finish school. I missed him so much and glad he's here with me now. He'll have a big transition starting 7th grade in GA right in the middle of the school year, but I think he's really going to like his new school. It's only a few years old and ranked #3 in the whole state of GA. He's going to be challenged, but that's what he needs. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers because this will be a big transition for him too. My parents arrived Saturday too as well for the holidays, which has been great. Dad has been putting together my furniture while mom helped me put away my kitchen. I've shown them where pictures are to be hung so I'm putting them to work while I have to go to work. I know they're super excited to have us back on the east coast so their not complaining one bit.

    Well, I guess that's it. As far as my weight, I'm just maintaining at this point. I actually miss the boot camp (a little - LOL!!!). I'll get back on track with my food tracking and exercise, but for now I can't even think about that.

    It looks like I'm about 14 pages behind. I'm going to try and read some to catch up with you guys too. I may not get too many personals out, but I've missed you guys a ton. We'll chat soon, but I promise to start checking back in.

    @ Susan Glad you are finally getting settled. This has been a long move and an emotional roller coaster for you. I am glad to hear you like the new job. Good luck getting settled in and getting Cyrus adjusted. You have been missed on the thread as you will see if you read back, but if not, and that would be a big job, just know we are glad you are back. Have a wonderful holiday.

    @Edna Keep coming back. This is a great thread. You probably should be eating all of those calories so you don't get overly hungry and so you get your nutrients. Some of these people have been here a long time and I think that is what makes them so successful. My intent is to one day be one of those people. I hope you become one too. Good luck with your "journey". It is a real life change for all of us, but a good one. Time to take care of Edna.

Edna ... it doesn't matter, I think, if you eat all your calories during the 'day' or if some of them are at night. ... they say not to eat several hours before bedtime so that you don't have issues with stomach upset and GERD, but really, as long as the calories are where they ought to be it'll be alright. One thing though ... make it a small meal ... more like a snack ... and if you lay down very soon after eating, try laying on your left side as that might help with keeping the sphincter shut so that stomach acid doesn't flow back up into your esophagus.

    Dates
    Believed to have originated around Iraq, dates have been a staple food of the Middle East and the Indus Valley for thousands of years. They have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 4000 BCE.
    The Spaniards introduced dates into Mexico and California in 1765.
    Dates provide essential nutrients and are a very good source of dietary potassium. In ripe dates, the sugar content is about 80% with the remainder consisting of protein, fiber and trace elements of boron, cobalt, copper, fluorine, magnesium, manganese, selenium and zinc.
