Deficit = Hunger ?
If a person is used to eating a certain number of calories to support their current weight... wouldn't it be natural for them to feel hungry, when they reduce that number to a deficit? Is it reasonable to tell people that they shouldn't feel hungry if they 'are doing this right?' Quite simply. Shouldn't anyone eating at a…

Anti-inflammatory foods
OK, so I have somewhat of an interest in whether there are indeed foods which have anti-inflammatory properties (or conversely, inflammatory properties). I'm particularly interested in the context of inflammation caused by autoimmune disorders, but interested in the broader research also. As one would expect, there appears…

Walking after meals
Does walking after a meal really aid in digestion? I know the worst thing is to fall asleep after eating as it's bad for digestion and the opposite - walking or light exercise to be a positive habit.

Do fat cells really stay around "forever?"
I can't remember where I read it, and google hasn't helped find the original source, but I recall reading that fat cells are essentially "bags" that are filled with the fat that your body produces. Gaining weight means those "bags" are filled up with fat, with new "bags" produced as needed, while loosing weight meant…

Correlation, Causation and County Maps
I'm diverting a conversations started elsewhere on the possible connection between the way we live and obesity/poor health. Is it diet, lifestyle? By comparing state county maps, can we see large scale patterns emerge? I'm picking on Texas mostly because it does pop out on a few maps. Like obesity and income inequality.

Fats
Hi! I have been pretty good about staying close to my caloric goal, as well as protein and fiber. I find that I am consistently under in days. I am finally in recovery from many many years of eating disorders so I try to not get too twisted up about hitting certain numbers exactly. That said, I was curious how important it…

Ketosis?
Anyone have any thoughts on ketosis to lose weight? I'd like to lose the 80lbs I gained after some personal stuff. I've read and have been told that this is an effective way to lose a considerable amount of weight in a fairly timely manner.

Eating workout calories back -- 1200 calorie edition
So it's commonly agreed upon (at least around MFP) that 1200 calories is the minimum you should be eating within a day. Now the real question comes in when you consider what to do with workout calories. If you eat 1200, work off 500, you've technically still consumed 1200. Should you then eat 1700 in that day, or leave it…

How much protein does one really need?
So in this quest to better my eating habits I have come across a variety of standpoints on protein. Some say 1-2g per lbs of bodyweight, others say .8g per lbs of lean body weight, etc. I'm really not sure who to believe now. Any studies/opinions?

CLA yay or nay ?
So I am curious to people's thoughts on CLA. I have done a lot of research on food, but moving into supplements is newer territory for me. Reading the ACTUAL Studies
I am probably more bothered than I should be about these repeated and in my opinion, ridiculous studies that end up becoming social media posts blasting the dangers of artificial sweeteners and other food additives. Going vegan having negative long term nutrition consequences?
I have been vegan for about three months, and did so without doing a whole lot of research. I just knew that I was picky about meat and dairy made me sick, so I made the change. Do HRMs on activity trackers really increase accuracy of CO estimates?
I have read (but I don't have any links at the moment) that heart rate monitors are not a good tool to determine energy expenditure for people. My question is whether or not they are any better than activity trackers which do not have HRMs. I am very skeptical about HRMs' accuracy in general.

How good are TDEE / BMR estimators?
Not that good, especially if you are obese. This suggests we use them as an initial guideline then work from the experience of weight loss week to week.

Health in the last 20 years
Isn't it rather disingenuous to write a blog about health in the last 20 years without mentioning that the percentage of overweight and obese Americans (and people of other nationalities too) is still on the increase? Is there any point looking at changes in other areas if there is still no change here?
-
If you're out of shape is your BMR lower?
Maybe. Abstract: Article: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1038/oby.2011.262/abstract;jsessionid=55F7EA672B4A52DF716286C3FE9EE6FD.f04t02 Another argument to get or stay fit - it may directly improve your resting metabolic rate.

A quick refresher on a calorie is a calorie ....
A quick rehash for everyone on this, as it seems to be coming up in the other nutrition debate threads. All calories are the same in that they provide the same amount of energy; HOWEVER, all calories do not have the same nutritional profile. so yes 100 calories of carrots = 100 calories of oreos from an energy standpoint;…
