Diet Soda

Erm.... kind of silly. Overeating and becoming obese increases your risk of developing type II diabetes. Drinking diet soda would help you avoid that if you it helped you not overeat.0 -
Not only good enough to argue about, but good enough to defend0

I don't even like the stuff. But because of this awesome thread I am going to get a bottle out of the vending machine later... just because I feel like it.0

1 - people like to debate.
2 - some people like it. everyone has different tastes; just because you don't like something, doesn't mean no one else does. I think fast food tastes horrible, but others seem to enjoy it. Therefore, I choose not to eat it, but I don't criticize others who choose to eat and defends the merits of its tastiness.0 -

Re: "why does this thread exist"? Presumably because the OP had a question/made a statement and people had opinions. Specifically:I drink Sparkling Ice everyday ( a carbonated flavored water made with splenda), at most 2 bottles. Is this just as bad as diet soda (such as diet dr. pepper). Does it really cause weight gain and excess stomach fat because of the artificial sweeteners?
The answer is: (1) yes, it's basically diet soda; and (2) but don't worry about it, because there's no reason to assume that diet soda causes weight gain and stomach fat, at least not unless it somehow causes you to have cravings and overeat.
The question is why do some people want to tell OP that she should cut out her 2 bottles of Sparkling Ice.0 -

Ok, from recent posts, sounds like people actually do like the taste. I stand corrected. And shocked.
Obviously plenty of people like it or there wouldn't be such a huge market for it.
I find the regular stuff makes my mouth feel "sticky" (for lack of a better word) and I usually prefer caffeine from cold drinks rather than hot when it's not freeze-your-*kitten*-off weather, so coke zero makes me happy0 -

Of course I'm aware of the market. I just felt like being a little snarcky. Even though junk food is not for me anymore, I at least understand the universal posting on MFP about drooling over candybars, cake, even Fast Food. Back before I learned about food and subsequently got my palate acclimatized to whole foods, I would eat that junk too b/c at the time, the taste was good.
But even from a junk food taste standpoint, how is diet soda even on par with the other junk?????? Please. Make me understand. Yes Mccindy72. That's right. I am criticizing taste. A line has to be drawn somewhere.

What's the problem with these flavours? Plus sweetening, whether by traditional means or by use of artificial sweeteners.0 -
Also, aren't we talking about Sparkling Ice?
http://www.sparklingice.com/
I like that stuff on occasion. I can see why someone might not, but I don't get how it's somehow objectively less delicious than a McD's cheeseburger (which is a subpar cheeseburger, IMO).
However, in that we have been informed that KFC is the most delicious chicken ever due to the special chicken mutation discovered by Colonel Sanders plus baking soda, I can believe anything.0 -

The original post was indeed about Sparkling Ice, I just haven't tried it so I used my own diet pop of preference as an example.
As far as it being less delicious than a Micky Ds burger, I guess that depends on the metric of deliciousness. Maybe the judgement is based on amount of grease? or sodium? or "chemicals"?0 -

I think its because to something like 85% of the population (sorry, I can't find the source for this right now, but it's something I read a while back), aspartame (and some other artificial sweeteners) taste just like sugar so it's basically just drinking a sweet drink. To the other 15% of us (who are a certain type of supertaster), it's absolutely horrendous. I can't drink diet soda either because it's horribly bitter to me. Along with kale, brussel sprouts, and a few other things. So I guess the short answer is that some people love diet soda because it just tastes like sweet carbonated goodness to them.0 -

I guess I am not a "supertaster" but Diet Coke does not taste just like sugar sweetened carbonated beverages to me. I have been drinking Diet Coke as my carbonated beverage of choice for 20 some years now (think of all the holes in my brain!) and I can tell instantly if the restaurant has mixed up my glass. To the point where I almost have to spit it out. I know it is hard for some people to believe but I actually enjoy the taste of Diet Coke, and I know MANY people who would agree. The DC drinkers are like a cult. Diet Pepsi drinkers, in my experience, are not as fanatical.

No line has to be drawn anywhere. Name some things you really, really like. I'll tell you if I like them. If there's something there the taste of which I cannot stand, I'll ask you to defend it to me. Okay?
In fact, I'm not a big fan of diet soda. I don't drink it much myself. It's a matter of semantics. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean someone else doesn't.0 -
The chemicals in it cause cancer. Studies show that the artificial sweeteners trick your brain into thinking it's getting sugar, and since your body doesn't get that sugar, it keeps looking to get it, so it keeps giving you cravings stronger and stronger until it gets the real sugar.0

Wait so does it cause cancer, or does it cause cravings, or both? You should probably read the whole thread, both of those points were discussed, debated, and ultimately debunked.
