*DrKatie, that was a good one! I remember 43 years ago when I was pregnant, my DR told me that Pizza was the single most fattening thing I could eat. (or not eat)

*Dog lady, I’m not a runner but had a friend who was a walker and she lost her big toe nails from her foot hitting the front of her shoes. Her Dr told her that she has to keep the shoes tight enough that her foot doesn’t slip forward. As shoes age, they stretch out and allow the foot to move more. Hope this helps. Good luck.
I've been very good about my exercise the last few days and actually increased a little each day. I still don't see how you ladies do soooo much, but I'm impressed! I hope all of you up North are safe and sound. Welcome to any New ladies that I missed.

Hi, I'm new here too and although I haven't read all the replies, (wow, 48 pages of them), what I have read puts a smile on my face. This looks like where I want to be.
I'm Sheryl, 61 years old, and live in beautiful SW Washington, just 15 miles from the Columbia River.
A year ago this month, while trying to keep up with my DVD's from Leslie Sansome, I ran out of breath and couldn't even keep up with the simplest walking dvd. After being misdiagnosed several times, I finally got the correct diagnosis of breast cancer. I had radiation and aggressive chemotherapy that wiped me out for a few months, but I'm thankful that the treatment worked so well that I don't need surgery. I'm feeling so much better and ready to get back into exercising regularly.0 -

Dog Lady: I go to a shoe store for runners. Since I was professionally fit, my feet are quite happy! My favs are Asics for over 6 miles and Saucony for shorter distance. Both are expected to last approximately 400 miles. I do find that I prefer a half size bigger and because my weight is more than a fit person, (I'm fat!)0 -
I've lost toe nails from shoes that were too short. It's a quite common problem, I think. I've found that I need a whole size bigger in running shoes than I wear in dress shoes. I always have two pair and try to alternate them. 400 miles sounds about right for me. I walk an average of 3 miles per day plus the regular walking around in them and mine last about a year. DH walks an average of 5 miles per day. His running shoe budget is out the wazoo. I think mine wear out quicker because I'm heavier. We both like Brooks, but I've also been happy with Saucony and Mizuno.0

Did an hour of a Bosu DVD that I have. Tomorrow's plan is to do a Personal Training with Jackie DVD (another new one)
Never once has MFP's weight prediction been accurate. Not once, and I've been on here for a few years now. So I just ignore it, just like I ignore my total days logged in number, that's a bogus number, you can get credit for logging just one thing. I also ignore when it tells me that I'm eating too few calories. I know that it's just for that day and another day I'll be over and it will all even out.
Joyce - at Thanksgiving Jessica made hard boiled eggs but filled them with crab meat. It tasted like she used the Dijonnaise for the binder (Dijonnaise has been recommended by Hungry Girl) You probably don't need as much Dijonnaise as you do mayonnaise.
Sharon - I'm so sorry your sister is bothering you. As you say, you can't be responsible for the actions of others. We have a good friend who is SEVERLY overweight. She doesn't eat a whole lot, but when I see what she does eat, I can understand where the calories are coming from. Almost every day she goes out for breakfast. The fat in a McMuffin or the pancakes! I don't think it's so much how often she's eating, but more a case of the what of what she's eating

Anamika - always so good to hear from you. I like prelogging so I can see if there's something that I really don't need to keep within my calorie allotment. I just can't prelog my entire day but the meals I can do.
Jeannie in MO - I have a gym membership but only use it like twice/week. Our pool isn't as deep as the pool at the Y. I also go to the Y just to use the treadmill and elliptical. This way I don't have to store that in the house. That's great that dh wants to get fit, too.

Vicki - have a good visit in Iowa. To be honest, I had an alterior motive for doing the cooking. I get to try out recipes that Vince won't eat. Like there is no way he'd have the chicken soup with peas in it. Personally, I thought it had good flavor, not soupey at all which surprised me. But he'd still never touch something with peas in it (unless I could somehow hide them). The gal called me tonight to thank me for the food. In a way I feel bad for her, when we were at the Newcomer social she took 4 plates of food home with her. I know that money is tight and I just feel so bad.
Lesley - after Mildred beagle goes, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if you got another dog. There's something special about pets. Right now you say you'd never get another one, but when you start experiencing the loneliness, you will probably change your mind. Love reading what Brian has to say. Thanks for sharing it with us.

There was a new dance in the intermediate line dance class this morning and my brain is still tired from trying to figure it out....I wasn't the only one feeling overwhelmed. I did have enough brain power to do some more work on the income tax and cross of a lot of things on my "to do" list. We had sunshine this afternoon so taking the dogs for a walk was extra fun.

Jeanine, I can't afford either the time or money to belong to a gym but I have hand weights and ankle weights and good strength training books at home and I can exercise with the TV on.
Mary, you asked for tools in being successful. What helped me was taking baby steps, being desperate, and being persistent. I started by making a plan for my eating for the day and sticking to it no matter what.
Katla, I set my calories at 1200 and add any exercise calories that I accumulate during the day and then I try to stay under that. If I have more calories then I can add something that is my normal food like more banana or walnuts or have a higher calorie vegetable like corn, but I never add any junk that I don't normally eat no matter how many extra calories I have.
Meg, thanks for asking about the bone density. Next month will be two years since the last test and the osteoporosis doctor said to have another test two years after the last one. Also, that's when Medicare will pay for it again so I'll be calling soon to get a referral for the test. I don't buy any canned vegetables because of the sodium, but I keep a lot of frozen vegetables so I am never without plenty of healthy food for my meals. Congrats on paying off the mortgage.

Hey all, Deb here from NE Wisconsin. I am a little over 3 months away from 60, time flys, huh? I don't do goals anymore, they seem to sabotage my efforts. I know I want to lose the 25 lbs I gained after getting a divorce and moving from So Cal back to Wisconsin in 2011. I know I need to continue with my walking and add running back in again and I know that I need to stick with this new weight training program I put myself on. I have four sisters and we have done every diet in the book and had games, challenges and competitions that were both funny and crazy sometimes. We all seem to gain it back eventually. We don't do them like we did in the past and I find my journey alone works better. I've taken two personal trainer courses and a nutritional coach course. You would think I could keep on track, wouldn't you. Not sure why I am here, just stumbled across it.0

I have finally set my mind to try doing exercises. I love walking but my asthma doesn't. I haven't let that stop me these last 2 days.
I also have a gazelle exercise machine. I love the way I feel afterwards either walking or my gazelle. I will make my self a promise and NOT let my bipolar/depression or the possibility of diabetes stop me any more or even use my asthma as an excuse.
It will be a hard struggle but I know I can do this.
Barbie you say your word for 2015 is "Now" and I like that. I also have a few words I have always loved and they are "Faith, Hope and Believe".
I am still new here, but "Welcome to all the newbies".

Sally - thanks for the feedback. I have been wanting to look into a scale. The digital one you described sounds perfect. It's nice getting insight from others!
I use the alarm on my phone to go off every hour then I get up and exercise. I thought of getting one of those fit bits but I wanted to see if I would use it for more than my phone could do nice to hear that you have success with up24 and map myfitnesspal.
Pipcd34 - thanks for the very detailed information. Several people mentioned that weighing their food was important. I also like to weigh myself daily that way I know where I'm at. I know that the weight will fluctuate and it shows how my food choices affect my weight. Do you ever drink pop or eat junk food now that you lost your weight? I am trying to make changes that I can live with for the rest of my life and doing exercises that I can and enjoy doing. Your regiment inspires me. I wish I could get out side, can't wait until spring.

Barbie - I like the idea of baby steps. Especially with your daily food and calorie logging. I still have a little trouble with fighting the urge to eat other things i haven't planned for. It's nice to hear about the different tools and strategies people who have been successful used to help them reach their goals.

To all the ones talking about the Fit Bit, one of the things I like about mine is the weekly and then yearly reports you get in your email. I like seeing what my sleep is like. I do have the kind that clips on but my cat eats the clip if I leave it out at night so I just put it in a pocket and then use the provided wrist holder for night. I also put it in the wrist holder right after my shower since I am doing a lot of exercise with drying, doing hair, getting dressed, etc. It may not seem a lot of exercise to most of you but when you have MS it is exhausting. So I want to make sure I catch that. And for those of you thinking about the HRM, if you are on a beta blocker for blood pressure, heart, migraines, etc your heart rate is medically very low and exercise won't raise it that much. A beta blocker will always end in a 'lol' like Atenolol

sorry I didnt check in last night.. I got alot of exercise yesterday..
we had another couple of inches the night before last so I shoveled he whole back driveway.. the deck and the dog pen.. and when I got to work, because we have OSHA coming, the whole back walkway had to be cleared and that is the length of the building.. well that was another hour or so.. and then I had to do a boatload of shredding ,well the paper dust had me sneezing and now I think I have a cold.. which means that I really shouldnt be going down to see my DFIL.. but need to get his laundry... will see how I feel later.. will call in a few hours and find out how he is..0 -

Good morning. I couldn't sleep. Woke up about 1:30 and couldn't get back to sleep. Finally got out of bed about 4:00. I can tell I'm going to be stupid all day, with no sleep. Tonight is a womens basketball game and I'm taking the girls to that. One of the girls asked if her friend could go, and I got an extra ticket but the friend still has not told her yes or no. Luckily the tickets were free (hubby is faculty, so he and three friends went to the ticket office to get the tickets for us).
Spot is snoozing sweetly in my lap, but I have not let Bruno out of his crate yet. He is a wild man in the mornings, and I'm not ready for that yet. I thought he should have settled down by now, since he's more than 18 months old, but he's getting wilder and crazier every day. Good thing he's so cute. The real trouble is that he's teaching Spot his bad habits. Can anybody tell me how to work on training when you have three dogs? I tried taking one in another room, but the other two whine and scratch at the door. They know treats are involved.
I moved some shelving around in the studio yesterday and under one of the wire racks in the corner was a HUGE pile of what looked to be styrofoam peanuts that had been completely shredded. Hmmm. What could do that? I've had trouble with mice in the past but we thought they were gone. Looks like I'm going to have to pay more attention. That shelf has not been moved in about 5 years though, so it could have been there a long time. I hate mice!!!
Hubby is going to the studio with me this morning to help move a heavy table, then I'll have the room all set up for the kids class that starts on Feb 3rd. I'm pretty pleased with myself for not waiting till the last minute and causing myself more stress. That is what I usually do, and you all know what stress makes us do. Eat! I still want to clean up a little more, and organize some stuff, but if they walked in tomorrow I'd still feel pretty good about the place just as it is.
Also not waiting till the last minute for the Empty Bowls project. That feels really good too. I have about 60 made so far (but still need to be glazed) out of the 100 I need. So, more than half way there. I'm starting a bisque load in the kiln today. Oh boy, oh joy!
Sorry to ramble. I know there is way too much to read these days, and it's hard to keep up. I read the posts at least three times a day and still can't keep up.

Good morning ladies!
Expecting possibly an inch of ice this afternoon mixed with snow. Hoping it's more snow than ice!
Meg and Joyce ... you were both right. Ashley was moved back to ICU because of the vomiting... because even though the head trauma was older (she did have some bleeding initially) they wanted to take precautions and do more scans. That, along with all her internal injuries (resectioned bowels/intestines), had them doing scans on all that too. Everything came back clear! Can't imagine how you deal with being sick when your limbs are broken and your abdomen is covered in stitches ... yet by yesterday evening Ashley was eating and talking again. The body is so resilient... always amazes me!
To those asking about how to achieve success ... initially my ticker showed a 72 pound loss ... now it's hovering around 60. :.. and here's why. This really is not rocket science. Move more, eat less. I stopped moving and I've been eating more. Getting back to weight loss for me involves being very aware of how much I'm eating ... so I weigh food. I like to cook and eat ... so the food I make will be nutrient dense to satisfy me. Cardio is good (I just walk or use recumbent bike), but I achieved my best look when strength training was included in my week.

Hubby has gone to an estate sale and I am just sitting here playing MSN games on the computer. I am proud to say that for the last few days I have been really good about limiting my food. I will not move my ticker until I feel like there is an actual change in my weight. Need to lose about 35 pounds and am just amazed at you who have lost so much and are keeping it off.

Each dog has been walked once out in the big field in the back to "do business"....they like to sniff and explore so it takes 30-50 minutes. I've written in my gratitude journal and read a page in a spiritual book. I just finished my regular breakfast (chocolate Isagenix shake with 1/2 ounce walnuts, 1/2 ounce pecans, 2 TBS flax seed). I've read the posts since last night. Next I'll put on my coat, hat, gloves, and headphones, put my smart phone in my pocket and take Brandy for her after breakfast walk. We'll walk about 45 minutes and I'll come back for Sasha to take her for about 45 minutes. I'll listen to an inspirational speaker and some favorite music while I walk and probably spend some time contemplating things that are going on in my life. I'll get home in time to have a visit with my hubby while the bathroom heats up for my shower before going to line dance class.
This is the routine I've followed for several years and it helps me to have a routine and not be troubled by indecision about what to do.

I don't try to excuse it by saying to myself, "oh I workout every day anyway, i'll burn it off" I do my best not to give myself excuses or reasons. I will have a piece of candy or chocolate or something like that but I add it to my calorie count. soda's I DEFINATELY don't miss at all. there's a lot of stuff I have never had like nutella which I hear everyone rave about and red bull and ben and jerry's ice cream. you don't miss what you've never had.
jmkmomm - I didn't know you had MS. I do a bike ride every year to raise money for MS. it's the 1st weekend of September. it's a 2 day ride, my husband has been doing it for the last 18 or more years. I was too big back then to survive riding that (hilly) so I would volunteer, now I have been riding for the last 5 or so years0 -
Good morning, ladies! I wrote my first post last night and didn't really get to read many of your posts. This is like having a bazillion sisters and all are different. Best part is you all actually interact. My sisters are too busy the last couple years.
I left my marriage of 34 yrs in 2011. Moved from So Cal to NE WI, which is where I am from. I started talking on facebook to a guy I dated in my freshman year of H.S. We now live together in a teeny cabin in the woods, on a river. I love my life but I have gained 25 lbs in the last few years. Cheese and beer and too many carbs, but mostly I went from an active life of co-owning a construction company to doing much of nothing.
I walk 3 miles almost every day and will start to incorporate running back in. I just signed us up for a 5K in May and am signing up for a 5K trail run in April.
As an avid reader and researcher of everything I like or want to know, I am restarting weight training. As a senior citizen (yikes) I know it takes more than cardio to keep healthy. I am also eating more healthy fat, no fat free for me. As we get older our bodies need more fat. But, as I say that, we also need less calories. So, lean meat/protein, good fats and green veges. Less bread, pasta, rice and of course sugar. This is me stating my ungoals, never do well with goals. It's more just in my head besides of course logging in to MFP.
-Judy- we are both new. We are close to the same size. I am 5'4" and weight 160. I know a healthy weight for me is around 130, but I would be happy to get back to 135-140.

Carol, No, I'm not an art teacher. I'm just a potter. Another potter is going to use my studio starting Feb 3rd to do a class for kids. I would never do that myself. Never had any desire to teach anything. Even trying to do demonstrations makes me break out in a cold sweat. Heck, I'm nervous just at the thought of having 12 kids in here.
Pip, I occasionally have a Shasta Black Cherry soda. By occasionally I mean once a month or less. It's a treat and I do count it in my calories. No caffeine and no salt.
I went to the store before I came to work and bought some fruit. I ate my last apple and orange yesterday. I really need that fruit every day. It makes a big difference.
Well, I have to get busy. There was something else I wanted to say but can't remember it. Too sleepy.

My back is really playing up today. I had a comfortable night, but the rower kicked it off and it is hurting. Went to our local big store with DH this afternoon and was miserable. Found 2 lovely flowery :bigsmile: shirts for him, a blue long-sleeved t shirt and a silky t shirt if it is very hot. I bought a v bright pink t shirt with a half sleeve for me. Even brighter pink than the one in my profile photo! ! ! :laugh: Bought stuff I just have to put in the oven, chunky cod, with tzatziki and brussels sprouts. Can't face cooking. Oh I really hope this improves before we fly off.
Tomorrow I am not going to row and just do other stuff. :ohwell: I stocked up with pain killers.
Also bought nail polish etc. Like many of you my trainers pressed on my toe nails and turned them brown. Horrible! So I am going to paint them metallic dark blue! ! ! Nobody sees them normally as I always wear socks, even at yoga, but the hotels have pools so I will be donning my flip flops and getting down to some lengths. I am a good swimmer and used to swim a mile three times a week, (the last time I lost weight before my breast cancer), but the pool I went to here is not policed properly and it wasn't worth my sanity. I suffer badly from lane rage. I went to aqua aerobics for a while, but hated the music! ! ! ! I hope the hotel pools will be a better bet as most people just lie around the edge. I wonder if I can still swim a mile after all this time. I'll probably start with half a mile, when we first get there.
Tomorrow I will sort out my toiletries and meds, always the worst part for me. When that's done I feel better.
DH hasn't been well and didn't sleep last night. Of course the stupid man has chosen this month to wean himself off his meds without telling me. I knew he had cut down, but not that he had stopped altogether! ! ! ! He does choose his moment, just before we are doing the thing he finds most stressful in all the world - a long haul flight! :sad: This morning he took a half tablet as I persuaded him it might be better to postpone the weaning for a while.
Not typing today. That sets my back/hip off as well. I have been very disciplined and I am over two thirds through the book. My back doesn't like it though.
