Unexpected results of weight loss

Society treats you entirely different. Better.14

I find myself automatically turning sideways and holding my breath when I try to move between gaps, no matter how large. In my head, I still think I won't fit when in reality I now can fit easily. I still have too many 'fat days', but sometimes I catch a glimpse of myself and am shocked at how petite I look. Sadly, that feeling doesn't last long!10

I have two unexpected results. First is the fact that I seem to be cold. I wear a lot more sweatshirts. I live with someone who is always warm. Before I was too. Now I find I am cold and need an extra layer of clothes.
Second is, not to take this to a bad place, as parts of my body are shrinking others parts seem to be growing. Basically as I lose belly fat it isn't hiding other parts. Sorry if too personal.
@mtews63 Don't worry, you're not the first to post about an increase in 'usable inches'. More power to you, and fair play for when us girls bring up TOM or bust measurements.
I have a possibly weird question regarding your feeling cold all the time. This is another one people bring up frequently as they lose the weight, but since you mentioned that you're living with someone who is always warm you might be in a position to assess: Even though I'm in a deficit I eat a lot of fat and I've been wondering if those who feel like they're cold all the time have changed their diets significantly since starting to lose weight, and if that plays a role. I mean, obviously the fact that you're not walking around with as much insulation anymore is the biggest part of it, but I've lost nearly 50 now and have just about dipped into the normal BMI range, but don't feel any colder so was curious if another component of it is that my inner furnace is burning hotter due to the high fat content of my food choices.
I guess the question is whether you and the person you live with are eating the same meals, or if maybe you've switched to steamed veggies (just as an example of a low-fat food, no judgement) while he or she is still having spoonfuls of peanut butter (again, random example).
I eat quite a bit of fat, and still get cold easily.0 -
I have lost just 17 pounds, but that is more than I have ever lost in my life. I've always believed that I really wasn't capable of weight loss
That said - my unexpected result is that I have an overwhelming freedom. I have realised that I CAN change my life - I can change my weight, so that means I can change anything else in my life too. I am free from the life I was led to, and have the chnace to become who I'd rather be!
And it all starts with 17 pounds

On the negative side: I swear, my a** looks like a bulldog's face, from the loose skin. (Yeah, TMI, I know.)
More than compensated for by dramatically reduced knee pain, normal/healthy blood pressure, normal/healthy cholesterol & triglycerides, and a truly surprising degree of improvement in my general sense of well-being and happiness. I wonder whether the latter is from reduced inflammation in my body, or something. Don't care why, though, at root: It's excellent. So worth it.
I posted the above on 3/23/2016. Now it's 2/8/2018, and I've been in maintenance the whole time, still at a healthy weight, continued good blood tests, happy/healthy, all that jazz.
Here's the thing: The bulldog effect is gone. Yeah, at 62, I'm not gonna be posing for glamour shots nude or anything like that, despite being decently strong/fit for my age. But there's been very, very major loose skin improvement,
despite my age.
I'll take it.
That's good to know. Thanks for the update.11 -
All the money I spend on new clothes because everything looks great.

I noticed when I comb out after washing it...less hair if any at all is cleaned out of comb.2 -
Also struggled with brain catching up and still struggle to chose a small enough size. I love shopping where before I would usually end up in tears. First time I flew and there was space on both sides of me as I sat in the seat. Not breathing heavily when I exert myself.
The weird part is people flirting, that’s new and honestly super uncomfortable.22 -

I would say that yes I have changed my diet and she has not. Now that you asked that question and I thought about it. I eat my breakfast and lunch myself. That is where diet changes have taken place. We eat dinner together and I am warmer after dinner. We eat same as before for dinner.3

I have changed my diet and they have not. Now that you asked and I thought more about it. I eat a different diet than before at breakfast and lunch. Those are not eaten with her. Dinner we eat together. Same type diet as before. I tend to warm up after dinner.0

Question: Can your head / area around your skull shrink from weight loss? (I searched the forums for 'head size' and came up empty). I've lost 40 pounds and my favorite Bluetooth headphones that I've had for 8+ years are now falling off my head every time I bend for something. I've heard of sunglasses or eye glasses getting loose, but I never really thought about the area around your head.6

I am not saying men cannot or should not talk about such things, but I don't see the equivalence being proposed here.

Yes, the circumference of your head can expand with excessive weight gain (literal fat head) and shrink again if that gained weight is lost. It is not your skull changing size; it is the loss of fat accumulation under the skin of your forehead and/or back of the head.5 -
The unexpected positive effect on my family, no nagging, just trying to be a good role model! My six year old son has actually started asking for a piece of fruit as a snack and asks to come running with me...this time last year I couldn't even run around our back garden with him. My husband has also lost weight and reduced alcohol intake. Family activities no longer seem to revolve around eating like they used to and they all love trying new things.
I'm very much aware that I'm an older Mom and want to be as healthy as possible for as long as possible for myself and my family30 -
I walked right up to a dear friend whom I hadn’t seen since October, before I started my new way of living, and he didn’t recognize me until I started talking to him. My own mother saw me walking up her street (getting my steps in) and she told me later, “you looked so thin I didn’t even recognize you!” I’ll take it!!!22

I've only been using MFP for over 2 months and have lost 15 pounds. I still have around 30 more pounds I would like to lose and I didn't think it was that visible that I had lost weight. But last week some girls at university noticed that I had lost weight and wanted to know how I did it. Not only that my best friend also noticed I had lost weight. That was the first time ever someone (besides my mom lol) noticed my weight loss (cause I have lost weight in the past but nobody would notice) and it made me feel amazing! Besides the usual: seeing my collarbones, being able to cross my legs comfortably etc., yesterday I decided to try on a pair of skinny jeans and I got 2 different sizes. I tried on the smaller size first, not really expecting it to fit, but it did! Not only do they fit but I actually like the way I look in them. They are also the smallest size jeans I have ever bought!29

Holding hands more comfortably with my husband. I didn’t have that much to lose, so it was a pleasant surprise to feel the difference.11

Yep, apparently I was packing some extra lbs around the circumference of my scalp because my favourite hat sits loosely on my ears now instead of snuggly above! Gotta get to a hat store and get some sizing pads or pick a new one.8 -

Yes I had a fitted baseball cap 7 5/8 fit fine before lost 120 lbs now it's way too big new size is 7 1/2 and still that is loose so have to go none fitted until I get into maintenance.7 -
My old coworkers commented on how much weight I lost and how I looked different but I don't think I look different at all now! When I wear my old shirts and they're oversized it's like woah, I was that big and now I'm not? It's nice to see weight limits on things like step stools and chairs and no longer have to worry if I'm past it.
I wear dresses now! Used to never wear them but now I can't buy enough dresses! Going into the juniors section of Kohls and other stores and being able to pick up a dress or jeans off the rack and know that they'll fit me is really nice and a lot better than being stressed out about finding something that'll fit. I didn't even know Torrid was a thing until after I lost a bunch of weight and didn't need it!
Feeling my collarbones and ribs is a nice little reminder as well.17 -
Losing weight is definitely teaching me about the power and reward of patience. I had none. Its been over a year and I haven’t given up. it’s a rewarding experience watching the visible changes of my body as I slowly lose the weight and doing it the right way.
Anyone else still amazed at the reality that they are actually losing weight and keeping it off? I had accepted and was content with my heavy weight. I was never meant to be small and I will always be fat because of genetics. Some people are meant to be small and can lose weight but not me. I would’ve bet money against myself that I’m capable of losing weight. Now that I’ve actually lost the weight and kept it off for over a year, without spending any money I really feel like the sky is the limit in pursuing my other life goals. If it’s possible for me to lose weight then I can accomplish so many other things in life. Nothing can stop me except fear. My next goal after my weight loss is working on my entrepreneurial pursuits. Just like my mindset towards losing weight, no more excuses, I’ll just do it and keep moving forward.42 -

This, after struggling here for 8 years and never getting anywhere What is surprising is how i look like my old self again. I feel young again. Almost like? was I really overweight for 8 years! it is like saying hello to an old friend.. hello old face! hello old body! No, not perfect..but just good ole me. i thought i'd never ever look like my old self again, that too much time had passed. It is amazing and so worth it all.
So what did you do differently now?
i stopped counting calories and switched to a whole foods diet where i eat six times a day, spaced2.5 to 3 hours apart. i'm now down 30 pounds and just about at my goal weight..even though I could stop where I am.. as i'm in the middle of my BMI. I eat all food groups...cut all processed foods, no added sodium,no sugar...and drink 100 ounces of water a day.9 -
I dont know about anybody else, but I feel like I'm in a fat suit I've lost enough weight (60lbs) that I can see and feel where my bones and muscles are (hips, ribs etc.) But I've still got fat covering them and it's so frustrating! When I was at my HW my body was just my body, and while I was clearly obese, I didn't feel as annoyed as I do now Now it's as if how I feel - healthy, light on my feet, down right tiny - is not reflected in my outward appearance. I think I expected to just look in the mirror one day and be small and fit, idk I know I'm losing at a healthy rate but holy *kitten* am I getting impatient hahaha. Here's to the next 60lbs!37

Oh, so much this. I find myself getting impatient to be past that last inch of flab covering everything... But, then, I remember what 367 pounds felt like and I give myself a little mental slap. This, too, shall pass... just have to keep working on it.
Hugs!19 -

A couple of pairs of my eyeglasses keep sliding down my face. My coworker who lost weight has the same problem. Now he scrunches up his nose when he talks. It’s cute (in a platonic way).
