What do you think about strength training for woman like me( just turned 56)?
So far I've lost 24 lbs and need to lose 30-50 more. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you. Congrats on the 24lbs lost, that's great! I think strength training is important for ANY age but especially, for woman over 40. Unfortunately, our bodies lose muscle over the years and as we get older, that process accelerates.
Strength training helps preserve your muscle mass and keeps your bones positioned properly, helping with osteoporosis and bad posture. The muscles tell the bones where to go, not the other way around.
I'd encourage you to pick up a pair of 5lb dumbbells and start doing 3 different exercises for your upper body and 3 for lower. You can google "dumbbell exercises for beginners", there are a lot of great instructional videos out there that can be of help!
Never too old, too inexperienced or too disabled to get healthy.0 -
And thanks so much everyone. I am blessed to have fitness and nutrition in my life. It has been a gift that just keeps on giving.0

Absolutely! 18 months time here. Took the after pic today, and OH! I cut my hair, lol. No more hiding! (Started at 205lbs and now still around 140lbs, 5'3")... Getting stronger everyday though, with 10-20lbs to go. It's been SO much fun.

Thanks guys.
I've meet so many sweet and caring people since being on MFP and I attribute much of my success to the ladies I've been fortunate to know over this past year.
There are some bad apples out there though too that just can't be avoided but of course, that goes with anything. I'm learning how to recognize that earlier on now so I can make better decisions on who I spend my online time with.
Nothing zaps your motivation and drive worse than being around negativity, jealousy and/or falseness. It's OK to keep distance between yourself from people who want to see you fail or who can't stand seeing you happy when you are successful. At the same time though, we have to find balance, as to not wrongly judge or accuse someone. Sometimes it's as simple as having nothing in common also..
Sometimes you just gotta go with your gut though! Blessing of a woman's instinct.
Have a great hump day, MFPers!0 -
I am just starting out with strength training. Can you recommend a good reliable source of well-rounded workout routines? I want to start out with good form and get into a weekly circuit I can stick to and is scalable at home.0
