And yeah eating not enough makes you gain weight...sure that's why all the starving hungry children in Africa gain weight and get fat of hunger.
everybody here tries to help, but it seems you know it even better than the people who are here to lose weight.

I only know that together with the majority of the other MFP weight loss people we lose weight when we eat less calories than we burn and gain when we eat too much calories.
You are different how ever so i advice you to see a therapist/doctor and dietist to help you any further. Because it is obvious you need some more specialist help here.

Not eating enough calories causes weight loss, not weight gain. This is why starving people get thin and can actually starve to death -- they do not pack on more fat to live off of, despite there being nothing to create fat from, and they do not learn to live off of air.
Think about it. If your body requires 2500 calories to run, to keep your heart beating, to get you around your job, etc, and you eat 500, it needed to use 2000 calories worth of your own body tissues just to stay alive that day. How would it make up the difference -- 2000 calories of fuel you did not feed it -- and then also somehow pack on 3500 more calories of extra fuel you didn't feed it, to gain you 1 lb?
It really can't. It can't create matter out of nothing. The myth of starvation mode sounds less logical when you say what it is really saying: "Don't undereat, or your body will get spooked and create fat using magic!"
That aside:
Loss of appetite is one possible response to any number of things, including grief. It is how I respond to grief, as well as some other types of emotional devastation. If it started after your dad passed, then that is likely what is going on with you. It usually passes for me given enough time.
(Oh and when I say loss of appetite, I don't mean "I forgot to eat" or "I'm just not hungry", I do mean "the thought of eating makes me feel sick" and "the act of eating is almost impossible".)
It can also be a side effect of anti-depressants, or of depression, etc. So if your mental health worsened (which I'm assuming it did -- mine would), or if you changed your meds around that time, that would be one avenue to explore.
I also agree with others that keeping a meticulous log for a few weeks would be helpful, no matter what you want to do in the future -- it would give you excellent data to take to a doctor or therapist, and it would give you an idea about a calorie target that might work for you. Log everything -- coffee, tea, added sugar/cream, oil you cook with, butter, condiments, bites while cooking, one hard candy from a bowl at the dentist's, gum, soda, diet soda -- yes, even most 0 calorie foods technically have calories (5 or less I think? I can't remember the rule). But just *really* get good data on what you consume. It will be valuable to have.
And I'm really sorry to hear about your dad, and that this thread has been upsetting for you. I do think everyone here means well and genuinely wants to see you succeed and feel better.0 -

I just told you how it works for all people
Gain weight = eating more calories than you burn
Maintain= eat the same as you burn
Lose weight = eating less than you burn
For EVERYBODY!!! Only medical issues, how long your overweight and how much and some other factors determen the timeline and how much you lose

That you cant accept that is up to you, your body is the perfect counter in this case and tells you too much calories so i gain. Or i dont lose.
If that is being rude ( just telling the truth and how it works)

How do I load a picture I tried to finish my log for the day and it will not save it and tells the dangers of under eating. Unless you are here with me watching me eat or not eat your not going to believe me so this is a waste of time. I'm done eating for the day and I think I ate like 300 calories0

How did you determine that you had the portion sizes that you did log?
And frankly, if you've been to a doctor who tells you that you're gaining weight because you're not eating enough? One of two things is happening. You are either not telling us the truth, or you need a new doctor.
I am not trying to be rude here, but 46 pounds doesn't just appear without either a serious medical issue or some serious denial.0 -

If you are trying to use that as proof that you're gaining weight due to under eating that won't work. If you look at my diary it will tell you I haven't eaten a single calorie in over 6 months.
You won't explain how it's physicallly possible to gain weight due to under eating. You were asked about energy and if you would ask your doctor certain questions but you think a picture of a diary is going to prove to people that your body defies all physics?
If you ate like that, like your day shows today, you would have been in a hospital bed a long time ago.
I have talked to my doctor about it. I'm doing serious damage to my liver it's why I'm trying to get more serious about eating but I have *kitten* holes like you who keep telling me I'm a liar. Just stay off the post if you don't believe me.

He knows how the body works. There are only so many options in your case.

Even with a medical condition, could it be that when she was gaining weight on "under 1200 calories," because she was eating more than both you or she realized?

I never really mentally got past the part where the 14 lb loss in six weeks was stated as some sort of negative
To me, that seems like an awful lot of weight to lose in six weeks--over 2 pounds a week. My mother would have freaked out at that.

Please do see someone about your mental issues with food and your medical issues. Get a thorough check up.
Log everything you eat and drink as accurately and honestly as possible for at least a month or two. Include any oils you use in cooking. Check the entries you use to make sure they are accurate too.
Planning meals and pre-logging my whole day really helps me to make sure I get to and stick to my goal. You might need to approach food with less feeling and more like you might approach brushing your teeth. You need x number of calories so get them in.
If you really can not eat much right now then make the food you do eat count. Eat foods you really like. Eat smaller meals more often- every bite adds up. Eat higher calorie foods with the most nutrition. Take a multi-vitamin. Drink smoothies with banana, yogurt, peanut butter, etc. Eat vegetables with hummus. Try meal replacement shakes if you have to. Drink full fat milk and eat full fat dairy. Eat nuts or dried fruit. Eat avocados. Eat meat. Use oils or have regular butter.
You didn't mention your height, what you set your activity level to or how much you want to lose each week that I saw so I don't know if your goal is reasonable. If you set your activity level for active though you probably don't want to log walking during your job as exercise as well.
You are just starting to get back on track so stick with it. Take it one day or week at a time. Good luck!

Do you live with the OP?? Follow her 24/7?? I doubt you know exactly what she is eating, OP is in denial and she has some issues going on and needs to see a therapists ASAP!!!!!!0 -
Have you thought about doing metabolic testing? I'm having a lot more trouble losing weight than I have in the past and it's making me insane, so I signed up for it to determine my BMR so I'll know exactly how much my body burns in a day. I'm also getting bloodwork done through a program with a doctor who specializes in weight loss and weight issues. Is there someone like that in your area? It's one thing to go in and be told you have a thyroid issue, or whatever else might be going on, but if you're really struggling it might help to go to someone who will go a step further and come up with a food/exercise plan for you based on your medical history, any emotional difficulties, your lifestyle, etc. They'll probably give you a plan, have you track what you're eating/any physical activity, and then have you come in to follow up once a month or once every two weeks. I don't know if that's doable for you, but I was at my wits end and decided that having some clear answers and then a plan of action + accountability to a doctor who can intervene if it's not working would be really helpful. I also live by myself, so I don't have much of a support system on a day-to-day basis, and I think this will be helpful in that regard.
I think a lot of the people saying that it's not possible to gain weight if you're eating fewer calories than you're burning off aren't thinking about the fact that just because an app or a website says you should be burning X amount of calories doing a certain amount of physical activity, it doesn't mean your body is actually burning that amount. I mean, yes, if you eat 1000 calories in a day and your body burns off 2000 calories (just to use random numbers), you won't gain weight. But there's no way for us to know what your body is *actually* burning off, despite what general information says the average person "should" burn doing a given activity. Medication, hormonal issues, stress, thyroid problems, etc can all totally mess you up and your number won't necessarily line up with the norm.
