I bake when I'm annoyed and when I need a distraction from the world, mostly people.

I made 68 lemon shortbread cookies tonight.

IC that when I was around 11 or 12, I accidentally broke the neck of a baby duckling by chucking rocks at it while it was swimming in a pond to get away from me. I wasn't directly aiming for the ducklings, but accidentally hit one anyway. When I saw what I'd done, I took my shoes off and waded out into the middle of the filthy pond to bring it back to land and watch it die since I had no idea what to do. I buried it on the property of the apartments where we lived and visited (while I lived there) with flowers and bread crumbs for the rest of its family.

I still feel terrible about it to this day and it probably goes a long way toward explaining why a.) I prefer the companionship of animals over people and b.) I go way out of my way to never kill anything.. not even insects or other "undesirables" people tend to hate. I catch them in cups and put them back outside.

That was an accident. You love animals because animals are worth loving.

Accident yes, but it still didn't need to happen. I wasn't directly aiming for them, true.. but I still took the life of something that didn't need to die by my hands. I've been pretty harsh to myself about it ever since and very rarely ever mention it to people.. because I'm afraid they'll tell me I'm a monster and not want to socialize with me anymore.

    Irrational fears, eh?
