    miles to date.....ZERO!!
been seeing a physio for a strained hamstring, and have not been able to do any running at all. im desperate to get back to it. I want to try a little jog to see how it goes, but im scared that I will cause more damage. Physio says to hold off, but im not sure if that's just to be on the safe side. its been 4 weeks of no running.

reading all of your comments and seeing your pictures makes me very jealous!

I understand wanting to get back out there asap! Hang in there as the physio says. You could always long some walking miles. Waiting to heal is just torture.

10/1 - 3.1 miles on the 'mill; plus 5.8 miles / 20 minutes on stationary bike.
10/2 - Had to skip run/workout for a life insurance physical (bloodwork, etc.). Then, they couldn't get me to bleed, so I'm gonna have to do it again! Grrr!
10/3 - 11.5 miles with HM group; cool, beautiful weather!
    10/4 - waaaayy overslept!
10/5 - not off to a good start this month; kids up half the night with illness / asthma issues
    10/6 - 4.75 miles on a beautiful, cool morning.
10/7 - 4.85 miles of hills with HM group
    10/8 - 4.65 miles
10/9 - 0. Up half the night, again! Now feeling a bit under the weather. It's too early for this stuff, isn't it?
10/10 - 7.92 miles with HM group. Cool morning, flat loop...nice run!
10/11 - 3.15 mile "recovery" run. Slower pace with one of my 9 year olds...love getting to run with my kids! Sore hip though.
10/12 - 4.75 miles. Beautiful weather! Hip better, but not perfect. Fired up for 5k and HM this weekend!
10/13 - 0. Had my repeat life insurance physical, which went fine. Then spent the whole day waiting at home for Des Moines Water Works to turn water back on. Some sort of miscommunication between dispatch and the technician...UGH!!
10/14 - 5.16 relaxing, lovely miles with HM group as we "taper" for this weekend. Got pulled over on the way to meet them at 4:45 a.m. Just a warning...woo hoo!
10/15 - 4.25 miles on treadmill at Trek class. Took it a little slower and flatter than usual.
    10/16 - rest day before weekend race(s)
10/17 - 2.96 miles @ IMT 5k Road Race - someone shortened the course! Oops!
10/18 - 13.1 miles @ IMT Des Moines Half Marathon (1:48:41). New PR! Went out a little fast, but mostly had a great run on a beautiful day!
10/19 - extended stretching with HM group. Relaxing.

@kristinegift - definitely don't beat yourself up! Also, wish there some races here sponsored by Yuengling! I love having it when I go east.
@snha - resting heart rate is in the low-to-mid 50s.
    @gabbo34 - Nice!
@5BeautifulDays - PR! Way to go!

@skippygirlsmom I am in Okinawa because my husband is a Marine stationed here. It is sub tropical climate on Okinawa. It is far south of mainland Japan. The culture and food are quite different too. It is hot/humid all summer and gorgeous fall/winter. Spring is quite wet. I have become accustomed to running in any weather (except cold). We don't have cold here. :)

@mamamollyt sounds as beautiful as it looks, please thank your husband for his service.
@tdbernrd OMG now that song will be stuck in my head....love the video, the SSSOOOUUULLL TTRAAIINNN! Look at Stevie Wonder in the background! How awesome!
@pearshapedmum the important thing is to get 100% well! You'll get it next month.

    10/1 - 8 miles
    10/2 - 5 miles
    10/3 - 5.1 miles
10/4 - rest day Allen's son is in the Nat'l Guard and was supposed to jump yesterday. We were headed there when they cancelled the jump :-1:
    10/5 - 10.1 miles
    10/6 - 5.1 recovery miles
    10/7 - rest day
10/8 - 6.6 miles of hilly hills  not big hills just rolling up and down and up and down
10/9 - 5 miles my first mile I thought was crappy because I thought my watch said 10:50 and it felt like 10:50. Turned out it was 10:05 which I didn't realize until I pushed harder and my next split was 9:47. Ended up with a 9:49 pace... so happy especially after dancing too much and too late at the Miranda Lambert concert last night!
10/10 - 5 miles - 9:55 pace don't know what's gotten into me. Ran with Skip who is home from Disney.
    10/11 - 5.1 miles
    10/12 - rest day
    10/13 - 11.1 miles (yes I want my .1)
10/14 - 5 miles - recovery run with Skip, cool morning about 44F at run time.
10/15 - 5 miles - another cool morning, I wanted to add a few miles but I got out late so had to stick to my usual run
10/16 - 3.5 miles I don't know if the stress of this week got to me, if Allen leaving yesterday got to me or my legs just rebelled this morning LOL From step one to failure on my 6 mile run today I felt like crap. Got to about 3 miles and said the hell with it and went home. Oh well 3.5 is better than 0!
10/17 - rest day XC meet - Skip did great 22:18 top 25 placed and she finished 23rd. She cut 2.5 mins her off time from this race last year.
10/18 - 4.3 miles with the trail running group we joined. Wow ran trails I would never try alone, when they call a trail "goat trail" they mean it, up up up a narrow rock trail. I was in the middle of the pack, Skip killed it staying at the tail end of the "fast" group.
10/19 - 5 miles 35F bbrrr degrees at run time today

    88.9 of 120 miles

Just wonder if anyone else has experienced this. On Friday I got adjusted, I was feeling a bit tight in my low back and the chiropractor also said my hip was out. I then went home to run and the run was off, I was feeling discomfort though my whole left leg. My knee swelled a bit afterward, and started "clicking". Not unusual I have had 3 ACLs reconstructions on that leg. It has been months since it swelled and currently the knee is not hurting me. The last time this happened I have a bone out of place in my knee so I am not too worried about it. What worries me is my foot.

I now have this weird pain in my foot (rear outside of foot and sorta radiating to the outside heal there as well). I will be fine in the morning but about a mile into walking the dog it is back and it is back all day long. Pain is not there when I sit or ride a bike but if I run or walk it is there. There is no swelling or bruising. My fear is a stress fracture but having never had one I don't know. There is no pain when I push on the area or rotate my foot. Does this sound like anything anyone has had?

I am going to the chiropractor today to see if there is anything out that could be causing this. I am trying to figure out if rest is the way to go or if I should go ahead and visit the doctor.

That is an awesome time for a marathon. Congratulations!!!

If you think you need to see a doctor, then that may be the best choice. Is the doctor a sports friendly specialist? Just ask @skippygirlsmom. There are some doctors that are anti-runners and some that will help you get back into running quickly.

The foot sounds similar to a subluxed cuboid. This happens to me. I must land on the outer part of my foot or roll to the outside. Your chiro should be able to help there. Im my experience, if my hip's are out, I should take it easy for a few days. It will throw off my gait.

Good luck. Maybe see a physical therapist. Mines helped with many hip alignment issues. Aometimes it more than just cracking you back into place.

@9voice9 - I would go cautiously on the white running tights. As most women know white tends to ummm become more see thru when it gets wet. Maybe dark with a good reflective stripe would be better?

Hadn't thought about that, but I always wear shorts over the tights, so.... Gotta make sure to keep @ddmom0811 in mind when I'm dressing....

10/1: 8 miles am and 6.2 pm with the Thursday crew
Thanks to some MFPals, I am way less negative about my race now than if I had posted this morning right when I got done. Initially, I was disappointed by my time because I had been so dead-set on 1:40 or faster. But as several people reminded me: Baltimore is a hard course, and not every race can be a PR, and 1:44 is still a good time! Plus, both my fall HMs have been well under my 1:45 top-goal for the season, so I can still walk away a winner in my book.

Generally, it was a good race: Baltimore is a fun race overall, and it was perfect conditions for a HM. But today was also a good lesson in humility. I sort of approached this race willy-nilly and didn't respect the challenges of the course or the distance. I didn't sleep well all week (not even the 2 nights before!); I didn't eat enough food at all on Friday let alone enough carbs (I had half a plate of sweet potato fries for dinner at a restaurant at 8:30 pm... not good!); I wasn't mentally checked-in and thought it would be a breeze; I had two hard weeks of training that I should have recovered from better; didn't use the port-o-potty one last time so I had to pee THE ENTIRE TIME (torture!); I went out WAY too fast (I was pacing 7:26 at mile 5, and 7:45 by mile 9, and ended up pacing 7:58 overall). Some of these things were in my control and some were not, but please, learn from my dumb, arrogant mistakes! Respect the distance, whatever you're running, and make sure you're (as) prepared (as possible) whether it's your first race or your zillionth!

Hope everyone else is having a good running weekend and I'm the only one getting schooled by the Humble-Gods ;)

    131.7/220

    exercise.png

ETA: I did manage a 45-second 10k PR during my HM before I burned out. So that's a silver lining! ;)

Thanks for sharing your lessons! There is a lot in there for all of us! My Jazz HM in New Orleans is now less than 2 weeks away, so all of these reminders are very helpful.
And that is still a VERY respectable time!! Congrats!

    It's All Good

Forget about comparisons to other runners. Every mile you run is a symbol of accomplishment.
    By Jen A. MillerTuesday, May 20, 2014, 9:27 am

"We are famileeee!" the silver-haired volunteer yelled, singing along with Sister Sledge's disco classic as it pumped out over two speakers. He was standing on the side of Martin Luther King Drive in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, swiveling his hips to the beat, and holding out a plastic bottle of water for me.

It was 6 a.m., and I was on mile four of a 12-mile long run on a summer morning thick with humidity. Sweat rolled down my legs and pooled in my shoes, making them squish with each step. To cope, I'd been taking a walk-and-water break every mile, and my bottle was already nearly empty. As I ran past the sashaying volunteer, he begged me to take a bottle, "Please, we have plenty." I longed to take it, but I shook my head. I wasn't part of his race. I hadn't paid for it.

"His" race was the in24 Philadelphia Race Challenge, an ultramarathon in which 300 runners run the same 8.4-mile loop as many times as they can in a 24-hour period. By the time I hit Fairmount Park (which organizers left open to all runners), participants had been on their feet for 20 hours.

My watch beeped: Time to walk. But I pushed on, suddenly self-conscious about the effort and ambition of the racers around me. How could I walk when they'd been running for nearly a day? They were covering 75, 100, 125 miles (the winner would run over 155). They deserved the walk breaks, the water, the "We Are Family" serenades. I was just doing 12 miles.

Hold on. When did 90 minutes of sustained running become "just"?

Seven years ago, I didn't run at all. Not until I got a writing assignment to work with an online coach for what I figured would be a humor piece about forcing an anti-runner to train. My first time out, I barely completed a mile. Eventually, however, I knocked out a 5-K, then a 10-miler, then a half-marathon, and--you see where this is going--finally a marathon. The road became a place I could work out a knot in a relationship, fix a work problem, or wonder at will about topics like what, exactly, my dog enjoys about rolling in goose poop.

But the more I ran, the more I lost sight of my accomplishments and began comparing myself to other runners. I'd call myself a slacker if I didn't run as fast or as far as other people. That day in Fairmount Park, I realized I'd gone from thinking of a mile as a feat deserving of a dance party to refusing water on a dangerously hot day because my workout wasn't worthy.

No one running 12 miles through a swamp at 6 a.m. is a slacker. I took my walk break, and turned around at my halfway point. Every exhausted racer I passed said, "Good job," or "Good morning," or offered me a weary smile. They weren't judging me, so why was I? Their goals weren't mine, and I'd be running on days they rested. I didn't need to run endless loops around a park. I needed to get in 12 miles as part of my larger goal of running a marathon in October.

I approached the aid station again. Same dancing volunteer, same blasting music, except this time it was Sugar Hill Gang's "Apache."

"Hi hooooooooo silver!" he called out in time with the song, pointing two bottles of water at me.

I took one of the bottles. And I ran/walked/ran home.

I love this! My competitive nature doesn't always allow me to be proud of my own accomplishments, but I'm getting better. It was a good read for today since I've been down with yet another injury for the past week.
