If it some sort of a trigger for wanting sweets then ditch it.
Diet soda is 99% water, so not getting enough wouldn't be an issue.
Yes, but water is a heck of a lot better than getting your fluids in from diet soda all day long.
How so?
Well, I see people on a regular basis whose teeth are covered in acid erosion due to their love of soda. Diet or not.
There are a lot of things that can cause acid erosion... It's not always soda.Diagnosing acid erosion
Patients at risk of developing acid erosion can be proactively identified using risk factors and lifestyle.
Patients at risk of acid erosion include:
People who snack frequently throughout the day
Patients consuming diets with high levels of fruit and fruit juices
Patients with eating disorders
Patients with gastric reflux
Soda swishers

This is what I find also. I'm not a huge fan of the flavor of diet soda. Esp Diet Mountain Dew. I wan tto know what villain thought that one up.
Hey, I'm drinking a diet Mtn Dew right now. GRANTED! the ones made with real sugar are the best, but this hits the spot on the occasion I want it. Now, if only they offered Live Wire made with sugar...
Ever do a blind taste test with Mtn Dew? I have, along with 5 friends, and no one could tell the different between MtDew with HFCS and real sugar. All could tell the difference between reg and diet.
I drink 2 diet dews a day. I enjoy the taste and it doesn't have a lot of calories. But I also drink 120-150+ oz of water a day on top.0 -
As far as the taste of diet vs. regular, there is actually a quite interesting tie-in to the whole New Coke fiasco.
Here are the facts of the New Coke issue, for those who are interested:
1. Coke and Diet Coke do not taste the same... they are not intended to taste the same. They are intentionally made with 2 distinctly different tastes.
2. In blind taste tests, the favored tastes were, in order of most favored to least favored: Pepsi, Diet Coke, Coke.
3. Coca-Cola was losing market share to Pepsi and needed to come up with something new. They already had a product that was proven to taste better than Coke. So the solution was to take the flavor of Diet Coke and make it in a beverage with sugar and HFCS - i.e. Coke.
4. New Coke was the flavor of Diet Coke, which consumers overwhemingly agreed had a more favorable taste than Coke.
5. A small but vocal group of nostalgic Americans fought back hard after New Coke was released. It only took a few months for Coke to give in and bring back the Classic Coke flavor.
6. New Coke (the flavor) is still sold in some parts of the world, and the flavor is sold in calorie-free Diet Coke in the United States still.
So... Diet Coke was chosen by customers as a better tasting flavor than Classic Coke, but a few nostalgic Americans ruined that. To be fair, the leader of the movement to bring back Coke even chose Diet Coke as a better taste in a blind taste test, but nostalgia overpowered taste.

For 19 years, I drank diet soda daily without a single tooth cavity or other dental issue (except I did have my wisdom teeth / 3rd molars removed during that time, but I hardly believe that has anything to do with what I ate/drank).0 -

Nope. Don't need to. Not as much difference as with Dr. Pepper, but still worth it (my ex wouldn't drink the sugar sweetened Dr. Pepper, she hated it, but loved the HFCS sweetened ones). And yeah, the diet tastes a lot different. More bitter. Doesn't bother me though.
Anyhow, for me, it's like saying I can't taste the difference between sugar, turbinado sugar, agave nectar, and honey. They may all be sweet, but they also all have different flavors that compliment different things. YMMV, of course.
I'm not anti-HFCS, btw. It's fine as a sweetener. I don't like it as much as cane sugar, but it's better tasting than sucralose, aspartame, etc.0 -

Hmm well I'd have to disagree.. Coke is so much better than diet coke it's not even close. But I do like coke zero.. not better than coke, but much better than diet coke.0 -

Not everyone would agree, but that was the majority consensus in blind taste tests. This was prior to development of Coke Zero... this was in the early 1980's before Coca-Cola introduced New Coke in 1985.0 -
Moderation is always key. I personally believe any sort of soda diet or regular is not "good" for you, but if you have to drink it, drink just one. Diet soda isn't much better than regular because it's filled with fake ingredients to make it seem sweet where with regular soda its usually corn syrup and sugar, not something fake. Personally I stay away from both unless that's all to drink, I usually go with diet for the sake of saving calories. I drink soda 2 times a week tops.0

My point was merely the fact the majority of people, at least that i know, cannot tell the difference in most sugars and many tell themselves (without doing a blind taste test) that one is better than the other because of a perception that one is healthier or whatever confirming factor. My BIL does it all the time.
Its not to try and persuade you to drink one over the other. We all have our personal preferences and should adhere to that.0 -

Fair enough. I'm of the mind set that sugar is sugar. So, in that respect, you are preaching to the choir.0 -
All soda is acidic and leaches calcium from your bones and creates holes in your aura which is your defense against negativity and lower energies and much more also diet soda is terrible it messes with weight loss the fake sweetness and aspartame tricks your body into thinking you are getting a sugar rush so your body will stress and try and get rid of the sugar but there isn't any and doesn't calm down toll the soda leaves your body and also soda and diet messes with your clairaudient abilities psychic hearing ability

If you can taper down, do that. It helps with the headaches. I'd you cannot taper, go cold turkey. Fresh air (and swimming, for some reason) helped me a LOT when it came to the headaches. I was on and off that stuff so many times that I found out what worked for me through experience.
I have found that if I have just one can, I'll soon be hooked again, so eliminating it completely is what I've finally had to do.
Good luck!0 -

While you may be the only one on this thread with the sugar cravings afterwards, there is a neurological reason for this to occur.
Gain weight by “going diet?” Artificial sweeteners and the neurobiology of sugar cravings
...These pilot investigations are consistent with a revised hypothesis: Sweetness decoupled from caloric content offers partial, but not complete, activation of the food reward pathways. Activation of the hedonic component may contribute to increased appetite. Animals seek food to satisfy the inherent craving for sweetness, even in the absence of energy need. Lack of complete satisfaction, likely because of the failure to activate the postingestive component, further fuels the food seeking behavior. Reduction in reward response may contribute to obesity. Impaired activation of the mesolimbic pathways following milkshake ingestion was observed in obese adolescent girls [45].
Except the OP isn't drinking artificial sweetener decoupled from caloric content so I'm not sure this applies.0 -

You mentioned that you're only drinking it along with alcohol.
I'd be curious if it's the alcohol causing the craving and not the diet soda.0 -

For me, I find it best to use them sparingly as a treat. I'm not convinced they are 100% benign even though they are 0 calories. I have 2 or 3 a month and the rest of the time I drink water with a squeeze of lemon or freshly made iced tea as my go-to 0 calorie drinks.0

If you like diet soda I just had a Maine Roots diet root beer here in DC and it was DELICIOUS...0

Totally disagree with the theory that diet soda tricks your body to crave more sugar or food. Of course if you use it as a meal replacement, it should do that because its zero calories and your body needs calories. But if you drink diet soda as a supplement to your diet, it wont cause any cravings at all. I have been drinking Diet Rite (due to the sucralose sweetener) and I have had no issues whatsoever.0

I wonder how many people who say this food or that drink is bad for you and how they would never consume chemicals like that, say it just after smoking a cigarette?
Seems everything is bad in the wrong quantities or depending on the rest of your diet.
Everything in moderation seems like the best plan, so drink your diet coke, just don't drink 4l a day, every day.

Ha! I've found Diet Mtn Dew to be one of the very few diet sodas I've found palatable. Some of the sugar-free Monsters are relatively inoffensive.0
