Rest day today - well drive day 10+ hours on the road to see my Mom. Talked to one of my dear friends, her hubby has been fighting cancer for about 6 years. He hasn't been doing well and looks like only a few more days at most. He and Skip are very close. We will head to the other coast to see them. If you're so inclined please say a prayer for them.

I'll post the ticker later. Ran my 6.4 with a new run buddy, then ran the Thanks for Giving 5K which was a food-raiser (?) for a local gym. Wasn't stressed about time or anything, so I got to talk with a couple of young runners (8 and 9 y/o), and actually ran with one of 'em for a little while on the course. I finished ahead of that one, and saw him coming towards the chute, and prodded him into sprinting the last few yards (instead of the leisurely stroll he'd been doing just before that).
Turns out I got 2nd in AG (31:23), so not bad. But it just means that I've got another medal to pass along to We Finish Together...

Hmm, sounds like the new update is full of bugs and glitches. Definitely time for a new app I think! I'll try Nike again and see how I get on. I used to use it before I took running seriously and used to like it.
My wife used to use Endomundo and she really like it. She has my old Garmin now.Nope. We all have different physiology. My resting HR is 53 and Max is 211. I'm 45F, 125lbs, 5'5". A good, comfortable HR for me is 165-180 (8:3-9:5 pace), depending on the temps.

60-65% of your Max Heart Rate is easy and should be the same as your long run.
You should be able to hold a conversation. If you can only mutter 2 or 3 words and then barely catch your breath, then you are running too fast. Use that method with your HRM to see what your heart rate is when you can run and still hold a normal conversation.

8:00/mi is what I am setting for my GMP now. It's not a BQ pace but it is what it is. I will try to BQ next year instead.

Just a quick check in for me as I have been away all weekend, I will read through all the posts tomorrow.
I survived the HM and didn't get shuttled off (yea!)! I didn't PR and was off my entry time by 4 mins overall, but I am ok with it. I was doing fine (on pace to PR) until mile 10 and then I just died. By the last mile I was walking quite a bit - I literally had nothing left and my side, hamstrings and calves were aching. On the plus side I ran all the hills, even the monster at miles 2-3.
I can say looking at the results that I was way out of my league! These people are fast! There were 123 women in the 55-59 division and I came in at 101 and most of those 100 in front of me finished in well under 2 hours (wow!)!! The highlight for me was seeing Meb on the sidelines cheering us all on. Some runners even managed to stop and take a selfie with him. I realized too late or I would have too .

@kristinegift - sorry to hear that your body didn't agree with your race plan - still good to PR. Given you otherwise seem to be in good shape, are you considering adding a winter marathon? Although Disney is finally sold out, Houston is pretty popular (1/17) and I definitely would recommend a great smaller marathon in my neighborhood (Clearwater Distance Classic) if you are looking for a warmer weather winter race and boston qualifier.
With weekend guests visiting for a mixed rowing/crew + running duathlon, I tagged along and decided to just register for the 5K section by itself as I'm not much of a rower. Still, as 99% of the participants were rowing, the 5k solo division consisted of me, a young kid, and no official mid-course turnaround sign. 4 miles after starting I made it across the finish line (ahead of the kid) to a confused race announcer who didn't think I was in the race as most participants were part of a rowing club, and sporting crew gear. Regardless, my watch was under 21 minutes when I passed the 5k mark, so I'll call it a PR for now, but have another 5k in 2 weeks that I'll be able to redeem myself at. Otherwise, tonight's 16 mile long run felt pretty comfortable, as my knees didn't start getting sore until the last 2 miles.

Nice long week end for me
Friday I managed to go to the park and complete my toughest HM of the week - was off so left at 730, what a difference from 430! no wonder why I hurt my leg, the ground was terrible - leg was still painful but ok while running
but by end of the day I was in agony, it never hurt so much as on Friday evening, and I thought - that's it.
after walking up with no pain - and I don't even comment, I still don't understand how can that be possible - I did a 12k exploratory run on Saturday. It was super super super windy, I run half way upwind, and while I was dreaming about finally coming back with a tornado behind my back, the wind changed of course direction!
then I decided to avoid the park for a while, I don't think it's time to rest, but I'm not crazy, so I want to avoid excessive hills and I want to run on as much roads as possible to help my leg healing. Did a 30k run, almost pain free, was really really really happy, it was nice to remember the feeling of running with no pain. only problem....-2C! my hands froze after 2 km, but we are almost in December and after loosing a lot of weight I'm always cold and my hands freeze even with 6C, so I need to suck it up (and of course I bought my 21342352354th pair of thermal gloves, that didn't work)
but no rude people, no loose dogs, no irregular ground, "only" 30k, it was nice
today 10k, -1C, road was frozen so I had to be very careful, I cannot take more antinflammatory now for a while so leg was a bit painful, but at least at the start of the run now I can bend it and it's something annoying rather than properly painful

@Orphia : you seem to be going from strength to strength with your running. I'm sure you have a full 5k run in you so keep up the good work.
I am completely better now. Woo! Do I have anytime to get out for a run until Friday at the earliest due to work and social commitments? No. Boo! Looking forward to getting back into it though (and so is my waistline - I have been eating like I was still running and I am feeling a bit squishy round the middle.)0 -

Tried to run the tangents! Everyone I talked to from my team said that from the start the mile markers seemed off. One of my teammates was a seeded runner -- so not much zig-zagging to be done in that corral! -- and she said the first mile marker was long. But an extra .3 over the course of 26.2 miles seems like run of the mill stuff. It was just tough mentally because I knew I'd have to run extra and I really didn't want to, lol.

I thought about it for a hot minute after the race! (I wanted to at least do sub-3:45 in Philly to get guaranteed entry to Chicago next year.) But I really cannot afford to travel to a race (and Houston would be during finals here, because Princeton is weird). I think I will spend December and January rehabing this hamstring and doing some strength and cross-training before jumping back into marathon training again in late January/early Feb. I've got a May race picked that has about 40 feet of elevation gain and is a big BQ-er for New Jersians, so as long as I don't injure myself right before the race again, I think I'll definitely BQ there!skippygirlsmom wrote: »Unplanned rest day - headed to see my friend. it happened to me as well in amsterdam, mile markers were 3-400m after the GPS mile lap, so my garmin gave me in the end 42.6km - wondering, GPS or course error?0 -

11/1 - rest day / Halloween Hangover
11/2 - 5.25 miles, 55° at 5:30 a.m. in Iowa! Nuts, but I love it!
11/3 - 4 miles on indoor track followed by weights / abs. After running mostly outside for six months, you can run pretty fast on a flat, indoor surface.
11/4 - 5.1 miles, again about 55° at 5:00 a.m. Getting spoiled by the weather!
11/5 - woke up with some major heel pain...a touch of plantar fasciitis perhaps. Decided to take my rest day early and try again tomorrow.
11/6 - 4 miles on indoor track + weights / abs. Heel feeling better, but not completely pain free.
11/7 - 6 miles on a gorgeous morning!
11/8 - 4 miles on another gorgeous day! Tried to get my daughter to come with, but she just wanted to walk...so I did that first.
11/9 - 4 miles on indoor track, followed by lots of stretching
11/10 - Rest Day.
11/11 - 4 miles on indoor track, then weights and abs.
11/12 - 5.1 miles on treadmill (Trek class)...always seems to be the most difficult run of the week.
11/13 - Unplanned rest day due to catastrophic appliance failure in my home

11/18 - 5 miles before it started dumping cold rain again. Not sure why, but this was a GREAT run! Felt good, relaxed, enjoyed the damp, windy and warm-for-November weather. Runs like this are super!
11/19 - 5 miles on treadmill (Trek class)...lots of speed work
11/20 - 0. It appears I caught a cold from @skippygirlsmom Decided to take it easy to make sure I have the energy to deal with the 5-10" of snow coming our way this afternoon.
11/23 - 4 miles on indoor track, weights and abs after. Cannot remember the last time I went 3 days in a row without running. Totally lazy this weekend. Closest thing to a workout was shoveling the driveway for an hour on Saturday.

@dharwood68 - here is my shitzu mix. I don't think he could go 1/2 a mile with me. Amazed yours can! I am thinking of getting a running dog partner one of these days. But it would have to be able to stand the Florida heat.
The rescue place suggested a Rhodesian Ridgeback because they are from Africa, but I think they said that because they had a bunch of puppies of that breed ready to be rescued. I can't get one until school's out, so I will be home to train him/her.
I have a friend who had a Rhodesian Ridgeback and they are pretty good if you are looking for an exercise partner. Her's could handle the heat and humidity plus she would bike crazy miles and the pup could keep up, she just had to build her mileage slowly over time.0 -

I completed C25K today!!!!

After nearly 2 weeks of sucky runs, today's was amazing.
This morning's weather was perfect: 62F / 17C (which only happens a handful of times here, since I live on the surface of the sun and all...)
Anyway, I was able to run the whole 40 minutes (after struggling with 28) and even sprinted at the end.
My heart rate (which is normally very high) was under control the whole time, which I believe is because I wasn't struggling to keep cool like I normally am)
I am scheduled for my Turkey Trot and the weather should be about 10 degrees warmer, but that's still quite cooler than usual. So I am hoping to have a good time -- I am there aiming to run the whole 5K, not set PRs or anything, lol.
Tomorrow I am going to yoga, as usual. Maybe skip my normal kettlebell session so my hamstrings are not super tight, I am not sure.
And then, I would normally run on Wednesday. But since the 5K is Thursday, I've read that it would be better to not run the day before a race if you are unaccustomed to doing so
So I am not sure what "workout" to do on Wednesday...
Maybe more yoga...

Good job on your Half even though it wasn't a PR. That's a bummer about it being long.

This morning's weather was perfect: 62F / 17C (which only happens a handful of times here, since I live on the surface of the sun and all...)
Anyway, I was able to run the whole 40 minutes (after struggling with 28) and even sprinted at the end.
My heart rate (which is normally very high) was under control the whole time, which I believe is because I wasn't struggling to keep cool like I normally am)
I am scheduled for my Turkey Trot and the weather should be about 10 degrees warmer, but that's still quite cooler than usual. So I am hoping to have a good time -- I am there aiming to run the whole 5K, not set PRs or anything, lol.
Tomorrow I am going to yoga, as usual. Maybe skip my normal kettlebell session so my hamstrings are not super tight, I am not sure.
And then, I would normally run on Wednesday. But since the 5K is Thursday, I've read that it would be better to not run the day before a race if you are unaccustomed to doing so
So I am not sure what "workout" to do on Wednesday...
Maybe more yoga...
Any suggestions?
This being your first 5K, yeah. Just take the whole day off on Wednesday. Call it your first taper.
