I don't think it was a very good survey to begin with, at least in terms of the picture voting. She asked who people saw as muscular/bulky. That lumped muscular and bulky in together which I think many people would see as two different things. Maybe that's just me but I see all the women votes as muscular/bulky to be muscular (well defined muscles) but not bulky (typically thought of female body builders).

However, it certainly highlights the ignorance of the vast majority of women concerning lifting heavy things and subsequent effects on the female form.

The thing to remember too, is that SHE set the parameters. She is the one who decided what pictures to use as the definition of "bulky". She could have picked female power lifters, body builders, etc, but she picked Jessica Biel. The blogger set the definition in the survey, so she is controlling the result and she is the one who decided that Jessica Biel is bulky.

This happened because she is selling a service. She makes her money off of the average Jane who is scared of weights. And rather than take the time to explain and educate, she chose to perpetuate the myth of heavy lifting because it will help make her a quick buck. That's what makes me upset about all this.....not the opinion of Jane Doe who answered an internet survey and is OMG scared of muscles.

Exactly! So of course people would be essentially forced to chose the women that had more muscle definition as the 'bulky' ones.

    Skewed survey is skewed.

Yeah, she did squats, deadlifts and bench press for only a month and ended up looking like this.
She became a 403 Forbidden error? Wow I didn't know lifting could turn women into HTTP.
As long as I'm not HTTP 418, I'm happy. :smokin:

<---- this is what heavy lifting did to bulk up my legs. I use these legs to do squats and deadlifts, and then leg press, leg curls, kickbacks, lunges, etc.

After 7 months of lifting really heavy stuff, I am an epic failure at bulking. They just got harder and the cellulite started to go away.

Alas, this has been my problem too. My legs just get harder, the fat drops off and the cellulite goes away. I haven't noticed any man muscles yet, but I am eagerly anticipating my penis.
    Sweet, I love those things.

Unless you take muscle boosters or steroids, it is extremely difficult to develop muscles like a male given that we do not produce the same hormones are males. Believe me... I have tried, lol.

    Read this - http://www.leighpeele.com/bulky-muscles-and-training-females-the-definition

Generally, you won't be able to accidentally get man muscles, just like you won't accidentally be a millionaire by getting a job. It takes specific sustained effort.

Thank you for this! So many posts like this one lately have made my head swim in confusion:

I do get bulky when I've lifted in the past.
People have stated, no, you can't get bulky, then proceed to post a pic of someone's who bulky as evidence of non bulkiness.
In Contreras' Strong Curves he gives the example of two women, same program. One "bulked" up quickly and with great success, the other slower and never to the same level of "bulk". Some women add muscle quicker than others.

It's the idea of what's bulky that's being misunderstood.

That article did a great job pointing that everyone's idea of bulky is different and they're all right.

    .

Funny you mention Bret Contreras. (I haven't read that book yet.) But, I have seen, on his and a few other trainer blogs, that sometimes, for some female clients who need a 'feminine' look for professional reasons (actors, etc), that:
    - Quads are less emphasized in the training plan, in favour of hams & glutes. (It's apparently that flinty dent at the outer edge of the quad that reads as 'masculine', while mass in glutes and hams reads more as 'curvy')
    - Lats are less emphasized (gives breadth to back, apparently)
    - Shoulders stay, to even out hips

Everyone please note that I am not advocating this; I know this is controversial. I am saying I have read this on the blogs of trainers I think are decent (sometimes in the comment sections - "if i had that kind of client etc").

I also don't know if building for a particular aesthetic effect also serves balance & function & strength. (But then, would guess that most of these women are probably not shooting for freakishly big hamstrings, just by themselves).

I don't know anything about my period yet. From what I've seen around here that puts me on par with many women my age.

Just try weightlifting 2-3x a week if you get bulky let us know... Everyone on the thread is convinced weightlifting has some health benefit - people who think they might " bulk" are just afraid to try it ...
I could post pictures showing how I have not "bulked" or tell about my improved sense of well being or less back pain...or how I can eat more without gaining weight- But really women who are afraid should just try it

Most women think they are getting "bulky" lifting weights but most of the time it's a healthy layer of fat over the muscle that makes them look big. Most women realise after going on a decent cut that their muscles are actually a lot smaller than they think. Muscly women and bodybuilding competitors have usually embarked on numerous bulking and cutting cycles over a number of years to achieve muscle growth. If you are in a calorie deficit you will not get huge overnight. Instead you will get lean and actually reduce your body fat percentage provided you are lifting heavy weights. Personally I chose muscle over fat.... I was skinny fat and prefer having some definition rather than a muffin top.
