The cleaner you eat, the less you enjoy processed flavours?!

From my direct personal experience the more I make vegetables, fruits, and legumes a part of my normal eating routine and avoid processed foods, my sense of taste changes and I get more flavor out of foods that were previously a chore to eat. It gets to the point where foods that I previously enjoyed now don't taste good because they're over powering my taste buds. It's TOO salty or TOO sweet, and the grease/oil just makes me feel ill.
If you want to argue about it a calorie is a calorie is a calorie but at the end of the day in the real world, for me, eating *kitten* food just proliferates a cycle that culminates in me eating more and more food that I should not eat. Moderation doesn't work for me. Knowing what does work for you is what's important, you can listen and weigh in information from others but ultimately you have to figure out and find that balance that works for you.
In my experience I feel and perform better consistently when vegetables, fruits and legumes dominate my diet.
If I were more succinct, this would have been my opening post. It's like your inside my head, thank you for putting it so clearly for me! Yes, this. Especially the cycle of processed (fatty) food, and the change in taste with more percentage of fresh fruit and veg. I also find the longer I'm out of a fatty cycle, the more amazing, beautiful and varied cooking I do too which again helps boost the motivation to fuel myself correctly. FYI, ive not been ill in 2 years, I no longer have ashma and zero heart palpitations so the cycle is definately beneficial for me.

I agree with this. Its a good thing!0

Is it just me? The less processed foods I eat the less I enjoy them. Even down to my protein shake, the false strawberry just tasted horrible today! I guess it's good that I'd rather eat an omlette than a doughnut (same cals!) But it can be annoying when out with friends as it's hard to not look like a food snob in restaurants! !
I have found it to be true for me. I have had to restrict highly processed foods and most restaurant foods due to health issues. On the few occasions that I give in they don't taste the same as I remember them tasting and I find that I don't enjoy them as much.
I try not to be a food snob when it comes to other peoples food. I am usually too busy trying to figure out the best options for myself to worry about what others are eating. To be quite honest...if not for health reasons I would probably be eating those other foods.
I understand about the "flavored" stuff. I was never fond of those types of things except for raspberry iced tea...well...maybe chocolate milk (only certain brands).0 -
This is just my opinion, so please don't feel free to pile on..........I'll be the different one here...I agree with you completely. I actually can't stand the taste or smell of pizza or McDonalds, anything coming out of a box smells funny and tastes much more bland than the food I prepare.....and my body much prefers whole foods to foods that have fillers or preservatives. I'm leaner, stronger, healthier and happier than I was when I used to "wolf down pizza" and burgers and such. My hubby eats take out during the week, and my prepared food on the weekend. Guess which one he prefers?0

Disagree. I used to compete and the bland "clean" food I had to eat was not that enjoyable. Yes you can spice it up a little, but it's NOTHING like being able to down a pizza and burgers in the mandatory after comp meal binge that most competitors do. People smiling all the way around.

Agreed! I feel like the more strict and "clean" a diet gets, it can make SOME people more susceptible to binge eating and creating unhealthy relationships with food.
At the end of the day a calorie is indeed, a calorie and I feel it is best for people to find out what works out for them long-term (ie lifestyle changes). If you can eat clean and strict forever and ever, no harm in that. If you feel you can't live another day never having a slice of pizza again, figure out how to make that work best.
I personally have to have a piece of candy or a bowl of ice cream every few days, but still see crazy good results.0 -
When I was pregnant I quit all artificial sweeteners because my OB told me to. Since then (my daughter is 8, I can't have them anymore, and I was using them sparingly from 11-25 years old!
Otherwise, most things like canned sauces (marinara, alfredo, enchilada, queso) taste funny.0 -

generally curious, so you don't eat pasta or rice out of a box then?0 -

Do you still disagree now that she has clarified that she is talking about artificial flavors?0 -
I still like a lot of artificial flavors if I liked them before; however, I don't always think they taste what they're supposed to resemble.
Disclaimer: I think white airheads taste the best, so I pretty much fail on identifying artificial flavors. O_o0 -
I eat a lot of whole foods...most of my diet is whole foods and meals prepared from scratch, whole ingredients or minimally processed foods (like cans of tomatoes for sauces, etc)...I still really enjoy a pizza though...and my coconut gelatto (not artificially flavored) a couple nights per week...I really liked the doughnut I had a couple weeks ago to celebrate a co-workers birthday, etc.
So no...can't say as I've experienced this. I do really enjoy whole foods and I do crave them...but yeah, I like some "junk" every now and then too.
There are certain things I've never liked...I've never been a fan of fast food...I enjoy good quality foods and fast food is right up there with pig slop IMO. The "junk" that I do eat happens to be pretty good quality "junk"...I like the pastries and doughnuts from the small local bakery around the corner from my house...and for pizza we go to a little local pizzeria nestled among the cottonwoods along the Rio Grande...I'm totally a food snob, even where my "junk" food is concerned.0 -

No, practically never actually.....I actually started cutting those products two years ago thanx to severe allergies. Editted...ESPECIALLY pasta....rice does a number on my insides, so I generally avoid it, but still make it for my husband sometimes0 -
Oh, I totally agree w OP. I can actually now taste the taste of lettuce. Each type of green has a different flavor for me and I love them for different kinds of salads. The other day, I started tasting the difference between an organic yogurt from the farm and a danone type sthg that has a self life of many months. I disagree that unprocessed food tastes bland, it depends on the cook. If you make it bland, of course it is bland. OP, well done, thanks for the post.0

Thank you all for your preferences, it's interesting to see so many different view points from people!0

Sure, after I cleaned up my diet in the 90s, my palate changed and artificial flavors became less palatable.0 -
To some extent I agree. I just did a whole foods cleanse and I still want and enjoy things like gluten. I do notice when I'm eating healthy though (I eat very little processed foods in general) that I might crave something like a Big Mac and if I give in to the craving I'm always disappointed...the taste doesn't come close to meeting my expectations and, oddly enough, even though I just consumed a TON of calories I don't feel satisfied at all. I stay away from pretty much all fast food for this reason now. It's expensive, I feel guilty and a didn't even enjoy the meal itself. I mean, if you are going to have a good cheat meal, it should be worth it, right?0

I don't think the average person can taste the difference between a natural flavor and an artificial flavor though . . . they often have the exact same components.0 -

gluten is a naturally occurring protein...there is noting "unclean" or unhealthy about gluten unless you are actually allergic to gluten or celiac or something...most people aren't.0
