Thanks, Mary! I'm not starting out, though. I've been lifting since before women lifted. Well, 34 years...
I did take a couple years off for some of the surgeries I had, but I've been back at it since Nov 2013. The last three surgeries, I was going in on walkers and scooters and crutches, as soon as I was released from bed rest, to at least work my upper body. I got weirdly famous at my gym.
I'm not going to sweat the scale for now. I did the right thing all week. Yay me!

Well then we all can come to you for weight lifting advice! I just started 1 year ago last Wednesday. So still a newbie!

Hi gals,
Welcome -Char, Keepmovin’, mardill, iamarose,
Gloria is the 9th your birthday?
Lisa – that would not be the life for me but if you thrive in it then that is great. When I was in IT we swore by Cisco products, and the payout is pretty tempting.
Kimses – do you weigh or measure your food? I do have a tendency to eat more when I have one of my 3 hour heavy gardening days, but I know I do it’s measured and logged….
Carol – yeah, it sounds boring…. But the good thing is it is a reminder to trust your instinct… you knew it wasn’t right before it started. And AWESOME restaurant food management
Mindy – I would get a quote from a place that does shipping and have them do it, and just add that cost on to the cost of the dishes.
Margaret – so glad things are taking a positive turn ! you have been such a solid positive patient person!
Larisa - I would be thrilled with a pound loss!
Becca – the storm is here now…. Blowing and raining and I’m loving it!!!
Cat – welcome!
DrKatie – Yeah!!! I have a question, a while back you did a thing that got the calluses / dead skin off your feet, did they stay in good shape, or did it come back?
Rosie – (((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))
Sylvia – take care!
I worked in a new garden today, for 3 hours, it is a slow time in the world of embroidery and the gardening keeps a roof over head and food in the belly.
I am so happy that last summer/fall I took advantage of some great pricing on fresh in season veggies and fruit, tonight is the last of the frozen asparagus. I just blanched it and froze it in zippy bags so tonight I put it frozen in an 8x8 pan, covered with a layer of caramelized onions and garlic toped that with slices of polenta, a swipe of chili sauce, then some lower fat cheese, and baking it right now.
Becca thanks for the idea of cheese and “cleaner” deli meat, I did not find just what you suggested, but found roast beef, provolone, and rolled that around tiny sweet pickles – 110 calories and 11 g. of protein not a bad get me over the hump!
A couple of days ago a friend gave me 2 big bags of lemons (meyer) so this afternoon I grated the zest off each one (froze the zest) and then juiced them all, I’ll freeze some of the juice, and will make a couple of batches of lemon curd.
Going to see my Mom tomorrow, today has been stressful for her, she has friends ( a married couple) who are both in their 90’s and the gal is very confused -dementia, and last night the hubby had a small heart attack so he is in ICU and the wife is beside herself. They live in a senior living community with meals and lots of support, but the wife is so confused! Mom tracked down their kids phone numbers and has made calls, but all live out of state, so it will be a day or two before they get here.. They could afford to get on a plane and be here in a few hours, but just not their style..the son, said something to the effect of could my Mom just handle it! … My mom is 87 and is busy raising a senior in high school. I just called him and told him I expected to see him here tomorrow, Monday am at the latest – grrr, and he’s retired!
So I’ll go see mom and see what I can do, at least a hug and lunch out.

Dear All you awesome ladies,
Getting caught up with all of you takes some doing. We are an active bunch.
Heather Your recipes always sound so good. I am also enjoying the Norwegian lessons and reading your conversation with Penny You two sound like you have been over the fence neighbors for many years instead of MFP buddies.
Becca I can't drink soda either. Only when I am somewhere where I cannot drink the water and no boiled water for tea is available, will I break down and drink it (and then pay later).
Larisa Welcome. I have relatives whose ancestors lived in Larissa, TX. A few years ago, I had to go to Larissa, Greece for meetings - the city for which Larissa, Texas was named. I have always thought that generations before us were better educated. They gave their towns, children and businesses classical and Biblical names. Larissa, TX was so named for the Greek city with a reputation for learning because the founders were building a college there.
Pip Some days I think we need to rename this group - Pip's quips. Thank you for all the bon mots. Giving the guitar back to your brother-in-law is such as lovely gesture.
Beth Glad to know that you will have a gym and healthy eating buddy. I hope the smile on your face migrates to your insides as well.
Carol May the dental surgery pain and bleeding be but minor memories and annoyances soon.
drcrisos I really rely on the scale. I have learned so much about portion control by using it. I can estimate so much better now when away from home.
NC Carol I hope that your second beau brings a better outcome. I almost forget what dating is like, but I believe that it is better to decline another date with someone with whom there is no chemistry than to try to manufacture it.
Lisa You certainly have been on a career merry-go-round. I remember when my husband was "downsized" out of a job just 4 months before being a combination of old enough and having enough years to get retirement, along with a massive number of other people. Then, the company turned around and hired him as a consultant. I am sure that you have all kinds of mixed emotions about returning to a high stress, albeit high paid job. I hope that you have enough time to examine all your options before having to make any decision. I am confident that you will make the right decision for you and DH.
Sylvia I hope that whatever illness you have will be fleeting. Get that vacation fast!! You deserve it.
Anna in NE Iowa What is the name of the movie about your mother's work in Namibia? What a wonderful tribute to her.
Irish Terri Love the March goals. De-cluttering and pre-logging really speak to me.
Betty What is the name of the Indonesian hot sauce? The dinner sounds really good.
Char Welcome. It is NEVER too late.
Cheri Good luck to DH on the job search. It sounds like he is making good progress. He might look into a group called ExecuNet. It is nation-wide and has meetings all over the country. You do not have to pay to be a member but there is a fee to cover meal and room rental for the networking groups. The participants are very, very helpful and there is lots of contact and assistance from other attendees between meetings.
Mardill Mall walking is my best refuge for exercising in bad weather. I hate cold, wet, icy weather. I can hardly wait for spring and bike riding weather. I admire Penny riding in the Arctic.
Kim and Penny I have never heard of licorice ice cream. I must lead a sheltered life. I generally do not eat or drink anything anise flavored (especially dislike Greek ouzo or Turkish raki) or anything with mastic but for some reason, I love the Panda licorice. I only find it in the natural food store so I rarely am tempted to buy it. Too many other goodies. Good N Plenty or black jelly beans are completely safe from me.
VickiYour friend is so lucky to have you. You are an angel in disguise. That you will learn how to change the colostomy bag shows just how much you are trusted. This has to be a horrible experience for her and that you can be relied on speaks volumes about your character.
Rosie I am so sorry about your friend's passing. I hope that you are finding comfort in the love that was apparent in your writing.
Mindy Congratulations on taking decisive steps to financial security. It has to be hard to part with things. But our love and memories are found not in things, but in our hearts.
How about trying FedEx Kinko's , UPS, Staples, or another commercial packing and shipping business for a packing and shipping estimate? They are expert packers and the shipment will be insured. Just add the price to the cost of the china. Alternatively, you could put this on Craigslist and say that you will only accept responses from the local area (calls, only, not texts or emails) and then when someone calls, arrange to meet in a public location with another person with you. Best of luck.
Allie 13,000 steps. wow. It is also good that you are getting out without Tom. I wish that you could take your trip whenever you wanted.
drkatiebug Congratulations on the smaller pantyhose and new clothes. What a great reward for the hard work.
This was a really bad food day. I didn't exercise either. I spent the day in front of the computer. Joyce's note about sleep reminded me that I have not been sleeping much lately. Sleep deprivation seems to be my number one trigger for eating. Staying up all night with DH and working all night on a project bid and travel plans for another (engineering and health) has left me exhausted. I really should be working right now but feel that it is more important to keep up with all of you so that I will remain healthy. Anyway, I seem to be far more susceptible to the siren cry of the Lindor truffles box (silent since before Thanksgiving) when I am tired.
I am doing the 30 day minimalizing game right now (day 1- one item, day 2- two items, etc.) and hope to garner a bit of cash while getting rid of stuff. I also have been consigning clothes. Anything not sold, goes to charity so at least I will get a tax deduction. The stuff that the consignment store does not accept (such as pantsuits or skirted suits - not in trendy enough style) goes to a Breast Cancer charity shop. I only give away something that I would wear or use. Just because someone is in reduced circumstances, does not mean that the person has no pride. For want of appropriate, currently in style clothing and shoes, men and women may not be able to go to a job interview. No interview, means no job. No job, means poverty for themselves and their families. I have volunteered in charity jumble sales and there is nothing worse than having to hire a dumpster to haul away all the junk that gets donated that cannot be used. It is so costly to the charity. Really nice clothes and shoes, especially really nice work, church or prom/party clothes in plus and larger sizes are desperately needed by thrift and charity shops. Whoops- sorry for the rant.
Tea recommendation - the Teavana CocoCaramel Sea Salt Herbal Tea and the Teavana Winterberry Tea are wonderful substitutes for sweets. Actually, I should have remembered the CocoCaramel before I succumbed to the Lindor truffles. I really love the winterberry at any time, but especially in the evening. Neither need any sweetener. I have served the CocoCaramel Sea Salt with a tiny dollop of real whipped cream on top as a dessert at a party. It was a huge hit and no one even missed cake or cookies.
Off to bed now for a good night's sleep. Lots of work tomorrow and I will try pre-logging and definitely will exercise tomorrow.

Vicki, when I was in nursing, especially surgical nursing in my earlier years of being a nurse. Colostomies was my favorite thing to take care of! We had a team of us nurses on that unit along with our ostomy specialist that the hospital had formed an ostomy team. When she was not available, we went around and did what we could to help the nurses taking care of the patient. Most of the nurses thought they would call us and we would change a bag. They got a surprise when we got there and said we would help them. It was our job to teach and empower other nurses and patients in doing it. See if a nurse thought that they had to call a specialist to change a bag then how would they as patients and family have the confidence to do it themselves when they got home. Do you know what kind of colostomy it is. Some are pretty hard to do just because of the nature of the disease that made them have to have the colostomy. And some are hard because they are iliostomies and the stool is always loose. I hope you can help her and then help her have confidence to do it herself. Are there no home health care nurses helping?

I've been reading the posts this evening and I've noticed several of us have had losses this week! Since I'm a visual person, I like to think of it this way - 1 pound is the same size as 4 sticks of butter! Five pounds is the size of a bag of flour!
I never thought I'd enjoy being a "loser" hahaha

Sometimes I take out a 5 pound bag of sugar and carry it around just to see...lol!
Cheri
I know what you mean. I've lost 125 lb and I think what would I say if someone told me to pick up a 125# bag of potatoes and carry into the house. I'd tell them your NUTS, and yet I was doing exactly that for years and years. We all rock So glad I found this wonderful group of friends.

Thank you!
Also, I'm very impressed with you ladies that keep on top of all these messages. I'm still learning names.
Larisa in Seattle
I'm with you on that name learning thing. This is such a vibrant active group that it is hard not to be inspired by all of you. Or, it's hard not to catch the enthusiasm that you gals bring to the table. We all have our own goals and trials in life, but it seems that this is the place to bring it and feel better about anything that is happening in your life because we all know that if one area of life is not working out well, it usually translates into food. Isn't that the way our mothers dealt with problems. If something was wrong, "here, eat this, you'll feel better". Maybe other people didn't have my mother......
Have a great night everyone. See ya tomorrow.

Anne from Wisconsin - So happy to hear that is was a "baby step" better day for you. Thankful that it was in the right direction. Proud of you, lady.
Kim - you asparagus sounds divine.
Anna of Northeast Iowa - you are so right about out group, we all have different problems and individual goals and plans to get there, but it is the same journey and it is so empowering to know that we are not doing it alone. Yep, I had that mother too
Mary, Barbie, Heather - ALL of you inspirational ladies who are fitness gurus, my husband thanks you all for encouraging me in the weight training. He says he can already begin to see a difference in my muscle tone/definition and its been less than two weeks. Thanks you ladies, for giving me the courage to try.

It's almost morning, and I'm sure it will be by the time I'm finished, soooo....Good morning!!
Larisa - Thank you!
Mindy - I don't know if you would get the kind of money you're looking for, but there is a place called Replacements Limited near me (it does business all over the world) that buys China, crystal, and (I think) flatware/silverware. You can look them up online and get a quote for the pieces you have. I checked into selling my wedding China and crystal when I moved. It would be a sure thing from a reputable company instead of dealing with eBay.
I had a marvelous time on my date (2nd with this guy) tonight! We had a nice dinner and then went to Barnes and Noble to hang out so we could talk. We spent a long time looking at muscle car books because I like/know about them as much as he does. When the announcement came over the speaker that the store was getting ready to close, we were both flabbergasted to see that it was almost 11 p.m.!!! We said good night with a nice hug. (Dang it! I wanted a kiss!!) I think we'll be going out again next weekend.
The guy from last night texted while I was getting ready to go out tonight. I didn't have time to respond (he was asking for dinner and a movie next Friday) and I think his feelings got hurt--he texted again to say good night at 8 p.m. Another red flag!! I'm not sitting around and waiting for ANY guy to call/text except for my son!! I replied when I got home that I would check my calendar. I sorta hope his feelings were hurt just enough that he doesn't try again.
Joyce - Excellent realization!! Those are the things I figured out after my divorce.
I think I'm finally winding down now and can fall asleep. I'm ushering at church this month so no lolly gagging when the alarm goes off.
Sleep well, my friends!
Carol in NC0 -
Carol in NC - sweet dreams dear lady, and maybe one little quick dream about a nice kiss next weekend. I'm so pleased for you. You deserve some happiness in you life.

well didn't get to sleep until almost 9(late for us lol) and woke up at 5.. Tom wants me to go with him to see DFIL so I will have to go grocery shopping after.. I like to get in and get out and I get a bit of anxiety when the stores are real busy.. have to Wally world... then home for a quick shower and to pick my dad up at 11:30 to be at the restaurant at noon, it will be wonderful to see everyone....
I am picking up a combo lock for the gym and leave blow dryer and shampoo etc... there so I dont have to lug that every day...0 -

I'm only checking in briefly now. We're with our son and his family. Grandson unfortunately woke up with a high fever, sore throat and upset tummy at 4 this morning. I hope Grampa and I don't get it, or son and daughter-in-law, who have busy schedules next week.
Heading home this evening. Tomorrow I'll try to post some pics.
/Penny, going back to the North Pole in a few hours.

Janetr - Thank you for calling me a fitness guru. That really made me LOL. If I am, I learnt from my wonderful DH who has been a demon all his life and can beat most 35 year olds at the age of 70. The best thing is how patient he was and how encouraging when I was taking my first baby steps and thought I would explode!
Carol - when I was doing online dating I would always put them out of their misery really quickly by saying "I don't think this is going to be a great romance, do you?" I tried not to arrange a comittment like dinner for a first date, rather a coffee or something. Only one date didn't understand the situation after the second date. I ended up letting the phone go to ansaphone. ( before I had a mobile phone) I sometimes saw three or four guys in the same week, just to check them off the list quickly. A few got a second date, one or two became a relationship. Finally I met my DH.
It sounds as if you might be on to something with this latest one! Have you checked him out, family wise etc?
Today I got the HUGEST surprise! While I was exercising a white van drew up and a man came down the drive with a long, flat parcel that he posted through the letter box! It was flowers from DS#2 ! That is a card and flowers, thanking me for all my help recently. It said, "You are the best!" Aaaaawwwwwww! :blushing:
I have to say, I was not the best of mothers and certainly did not fulfill the conventional image. :noway: Much too selfish. :ohwell: But I am trying to be a good Granny (partly because my mother was rubbish and my ex's mother was terrific ). I have wonderful help from DH who really should be sharing the flowers with me.
Of course, I know it is DDIL who is behind it; he would never have managed it all by himself, but it makes me happy.
Might get a text from DS#1 if I'm lucky.
DS#2 has his big job interview tomorrow. (Gulp)
Fillet steak and red wine tonight.
CJ - I will be following your link. I do feel I know Penny! Hi Penny! I've just ordered two more films Insomnia and King of Devils Island. They have subtitles.
I'm doing the time next on Duolingo. How are other people getting on?
PS Just read the article. Thank you. The film Orion's Belte has the protagonist climbing into a coal bin in the mine to escape from pursuit and travelling in it down the valley. So sorry about the avalanche. I will be thinking of it when I visit in June.
Heather UK and HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all the UK people! ! :flowerforyou:0 -
Happy sunday everyone. My weight is stablized, the last 5lbs are the hardest! Trying not to be too rigid about it, the most important thing is bp is healthy and my joints dont hurt as much.
Despite a stomach bug, dd and i checked an item off her "bucket list" ( imagine a 17 year old with a bucket list!!!!) She wanted to hear an opera at.the met . We had a lovely time at Madama Butterfly, felt very grand, went very late for me, didnt get home til 1a.m. but was worth it. Now back to the gym, make lots of soup for the week and get ready for a big work week.

Kim, my feet stayed looking great for a long time, but the cracks are starting to come back on my heels. I confess I am not very consistent (like hardly ever) with putting lotion on my heels. If I would moisturizer them daily, they would probably still look good. Now that I know I can order Baby Foot from Amazon for less than I paid at the dermatologist, I may give myself another treatment before sandal weather gets here. It is cheaper than a pedicure and lasts a lot longer. It was last June or July when I did it.0

Not giving up is very important. What we do every day is more important than what we do once in awhile0 -
Happy Sunday Morning!0

Godmomkim I haven't been measuring so I'm pretty sure it's portion sizes causing the problem. Plus I don't think my love of salt is helping.
I kind of gave up yesterday although it wasn't a complete surrender. It was one of those mindsets of I'm going to just eat what I want and I'll start fresh again tomorrow. It's hard to get away from the frustration of doing what appears to be the right things and having not movement. BUT, as we all know, there are always places where, if tightened up, will make the difference (such as measuring and logging). I know I don't have any metabolic disorder that prevents me from losing weight. There really is no mystery here. However, it requires more vigilance than when I was younger and it's going to be slow progress.
Hoping that I have convinced myself! I can do this -- I have the tools and the knowledge.
I will set myself up for success today with fresh veggies and fruits in the house, and planning out the dinner menus for the week for myself (and then just throw some meat and potatoes on the table for the boys!).
OK...my pep talk to me is complete.

KarenThis brings back wonderful memories. For graduation from uni my mother asked what I wanted as the 3 months traveling overseas was now out of the question due to father's death a few months before. I said - a night at the Metropolitan Opera in grand style or a g [d bike. My mom introduced me to opera at age 4 and I have all her old librettos. I still listen to Saturday live broadcasts from time to time. Of course, she agreed. So a very good girlfriend and I got all dressed up (I wore a colorful long dress and she wore a shimmery gold cocktail dress) then to the Opera in a Grand Parterre box. Afterwards, we went to dinner across the street and heard Marian McPartland. As you can tell, I remember every detail umpteen years later. So will your DD. she is lucky to have you.
