It was going to be warm and humid today and I was actually EXCITED about that! I've been waiting for some challenging running weather because for some crazy reason I believe this will help prepare me for the upcoming horror of July and August heat and humidity. This was the best challenge yet. It was 67 degrees F at the start and 73 degrees at the end of the 6 mile run with 80% humidity. Things didn't really seem so bad until the last couple miles and I noticed I was pretty slow on mile 5 which was mostly in the direct sun so I think that was a factor in that. A great run otherwise though!
I have to go to a 2:00 call but will try and catch up on today's posts afterwards.

@ceciliaslater - I agree with @Elise4270. It sounds like an injury, even if minor. Rest is always a good idea, and life/work seems to be affording you a convenient excuse to not run. Because we all know how nearly impossible it is to not run due to injury. If I lost a toe, I would probably find a way to run. But if work was busy enough for just long enough to grow a new toe, that might convince me to wait.

Congrats on your first HM @_nikkiwolf_ It seems like the predictor knew better.
@WhatMeRunning Lol, I can't believe you are excited about warm and humind weather! You are welcome to have my share of that whenever you want
@ddmom0811 He, at least you didn't sing 'I must go and buy more more more more more more running shoes.'
@4leighbee Would you get a discount on running gear if you work the the shoe store? Cause that might totally be worth it! Of course, more work means less time to run. Tough decision!
@MobyCarp Best of luck for your meeting with the PT, hope all will be better soon!
@moyer566 Wow, somehow I nearly missed this - congratulations on finishing your half, great job!
@louubelle16 Ugh, lost toenails suck! Okay, I only lost one once - but that was half a year ago, and it took until now until it's almost grown completely back (2-4 more weeks until I can finally clip it again, I think).
As far as I remember, touching it/wearing shoes only hurt for a couple of days. I walked barefoot at home, sandals with socks for shopping etc (awefull, I know! But they were black sandals with black socks, and very long Jeans to hide it as much as possible), and my ugly safety shoes with nice, roomy, steel-padded toeboy at work - even on days where I spent all the time at the desk.
And after a couple of days you get this weird skin-toenail-mix thing on your toe, and it doesn't hurt any more. It just looks really weird - but at least it doesn't keep you from running ^^

Just realised I didn't update my ticker in a while - so here's my summary for last weeks training
2.05.2016 YAYOG week 1, day 3
3.05.2016 6.5 km
4.05.2016 5.0 km with a bit of hills
5.05.2016 10.6 km
6.05.2016 8.5 km at planned race pace
7.05.2016 Rest day (should've been YAYOG w1d4, but killing my legs the day before the half seemed stupid)
8.05.2016 Race day - 21.3 km ! And 4.1 km "recovery" in the evening.
---
55.8 km for the week
Yes, I actually did another run the same day as the race. I knew I probably wouldn't get a chance to run on Monday, and I was already starting to feel a bit stiff in the evening, so somehow I came up with the idea that 12 hours after finishing would be a perfect time for a nice easy run. "Easy" is definitely not what it was when I took the first few steps! I realised I had a sore spot in my back where my fuel belt must have chafed (which it never did before), and another spot under my left armpit where the sports bra chafed (which it also never did before). Oh, and my feet hurt, and my calves hurt, and my knees hurt, ... - you get the picture! Miraculously enough, after 10 minutes, all but the chafe-aches went away, and it was a rather pleasant, short and slow night run. I was really tempted to stay out longer to enjoy the lovely cool breeze, but in the end common sense won out, and I kept it short.
After that, I didn't feel any soreness at all either biking to work on Monday nor biking and running today. Kinda weird, not what I expected, but I'm not complaining!

OH, and @EvgeniZyntx - Some time back you posted a graph from the Health tab on your sporttracks.mobi page. Thanks for doing that, I am LOVING that app! I have been tweaking future planned runs and comparing the estimated results on that health tab. It is eye opening!0

I am thinking bout going back on my initial thoughts and running tomorrow. My reasoning being, With my assignment of 90-105 minute long run on Sat, I'll be over the 35% mark for miles with the anticipated 9 miles I'll get in on that run. If I do an easy 3 miler tomorrow, I'll be at 26 miles for the week, with the anticipated LR, and that keeps me (barely) under 35% total miles for my LR. Next week is a cutback week, so I feel Okay doing this, but was looking for some thoughts0
-
@_nikkiwolf_ not sure yet about a discount but that was definitely the idea. Less running ... uh oh. Wait - where else can I steal time from? #rethinking
just a couple TM miles this evening with my daughter - who ran a whole mile and is now eating a healthy dinner she made all by herself2 -

decided to add our 4.5 mile Sunday walk, because I was sore the next day
ticker isn't updating though so I'll add it in the morning1 -
Running fewer miles the week of a race is tough, but necessary. And I am totally bummed that I can't do my 38 Mile Night Fun Run on June 4.... I forgot that it was my son's graduation that day. I felt like crap because I debated long and hard about asking him if he would mind me not being there. Anyway, I am going to swap that race out for another 50k in Ohio in July... that will still give me three 50ks and a couple of HMs to get ready for October... but still, I can't believe I was seriously thinking about skipping his graduation for a race....1

My husband suggested I put an orthotic in my shoes. And whaddya know, it helps.
There are 3 tests for posterior tibial tendonitis, I'm negative on all 3. I guess it still could be. But I'm incline to think that's not it. I suppose if I'm not better by the 15th-ish I'll visit a new doc. That's 3 full weeks from the half, when it became a problem.
Glad to be able to do something now. I spent the last 2 hours tromping back and forth up and down the back yard to the ravine dumping brush and large cedar logs. Hotness.
So maybe I'll even be able to run this weekend with this insert.3 -

You are not pushing that 35% rule too hard and you are starting out at a lower mileage base which can make long runs pretty hard to achieve. You have to go at least 90 minutes for it to really be an effective long run from a training perspective.
You may need to replot your runs and distance to make sure you can afford one good long run in weekly of 90+ minutes.
That is if I'm understanding it all correctly, I might not be. The key thing you may need to ask is if you are comfortable with trying 9 miles. I recall being quite surprised transitioning from 10k distances to half marathon distances. That was when other factors like nutrition finally started coming into play for me and when I really started looking into how to run. You are well ahead of all that though...but will still have to push into those distances. The good news is...you'll break those barriers so fast you won't even remember how tough they were for the very short time (relatively) they challenged you.0 -
@Elise4270 - YAY!!!! I hope that is the trick!!!1

@WhatMeRunning I've broken 8 2 times before. LR last week was 8.44, so 9 isn't a really big jump. with the plan I'm following, I'm being careful to tailor my runs to meet the rime assignment from the plan, with keeping the mileage so that my LR is below 35% of the weekly miles. Next week is a cut beck week, then a BIG Jump the next week, going by the plan. I'll be scoping out that mileage next week when I plan for the following week. Personal goal is to get a 10-12 mile run in within the next 3-4 weeks, and see how that lines up with the plan....Using a strava plan as a guideline.
That all make sense?2 -

Got in lots of biking earlier, so just went for a shorter 6 mile run this evening before sunset. Keeping my pace/heart rate in relatively comfortable zones for at least 2 more weeks (per post-marathon recovery guidelines), but glad I'm able to resume my normal mileage this week.
Just went 11/25 on the quiz as I spend a similar amount of time biking/swimming/lifting and nearly equally obsess over those activities.
5/1 - 26.2 miles (Pittsburgh Marathon - 3:08:25, ran as bib #666 in full devil costume, got a BQ)
5/5 - 6 miles
5/9 - 15 miles

Total: 53 miles
Goal: 180 miles
Remaining: 127 miles
Next Races:
Ironman 70.3 Augusta - September
Chicago Marathon - October
Ironman Florida - November
@ddmom0811 - It is definitely taking me a while to get used to the Florida weather this week as I've run when the sun has been out the past 2 days and have come home soaked, despite the humidity being slightly below seasonal norms. Luckily, I'm returning back north Monday.1 -
@_nikkiwolf_ - even though everything I wear on race day is something I've tried out several times before, I always seem to end up with chafing in areas that never chafed before!
05/04 - 2.6
05/10 - 3.0 (35 minute run put me at 2.98, restarted my watch and ran an extra 15 sec to get to 3.0, haha )
Didn't get to post yesterday, but did an easy 3 miles in the morning. It was not raining when I left my apartment, and then decided to rain hard for 5 minutes, then sprinkled for the rest of my 35 minute run. Figured at that point I was already soaked, but not miserable so I'd just continue. Wore a new sparkle skirt I had gotten and it did well in the rain1 -
Sorry I'm being a ghost. I'll return soon. Legs are currently at 80%. 26mi downhill killed my legs.
5/10 - Rest. Day 3 post marathon. Feel good enough to run. But I'm still waiting. So I did loads of pull ups and dips today instead. Powerlifting tomorrow (deads). I will prob run within a few days. Likely won't hit the 185mi month goal. But idc. I got a 50k coming up on June 4th. Going to try to get a couple long runs in before then with mostly glacial paced easy runs.
18 on the running quiz lol.
@MobyCarp @Ohhim Ya. It was killer. I've done 1,300ft descent before, but this was on another level. Felt like a road marathon + 10,000 squats. I could barely walk for days.
@WhatMeRunning Thanks man! I wasn't really then. But I am now! Won't be much longer!
@Stoshew71 Thanks! Slowest, but most painful marathon!
5/1 - Rest

Saturday's run was 9.2 miles between my son's soccer games at a local tournament. I found a beautiful lake to run around about 2 miles from the soccer complex. Unfortunately my son's team got their kitten handed to them and went 0-3, getting outscored 10-1 in the process.
Sunday's 6 mile run was a couple of laps around a local lake with Kody. The temp was borderline for him, as he still has on his winter coat, so I let him swim in the creek that feeds the lake. He loved that and the run went better for him.
Today...today was one of those dream runs. Work took me to southeast Minnesota for the morning. After I got done with that, I stopped at a state park on the way home, talked to the park ranger to get her trail suggestions and found out there was a spring-fed pond near one of the parking lots. Hmmm....
I ran the suggested routes. About half of the trail I ran was phenomenal (the rest 'just' very nice). There was one stretch I loved so much I ran it three times. I bordered a stream, was wet and a bit muddy, and the just beautiful. heaven. I finished off my 6 miles at the pond, stripped to my scivvies and went in. Holy crap it was COLD!! But so invigorating and refreshing. I spent about 5 minutes cooling off then headed out. I was sure glad I had a towel in my truck.
As luck would have it, there was a brewery located just 11 miles further down the road. As luck would also have it, it was happy hour...$2 pints and half price apps. Yeah, I'm in! I replenished all my spent calories and got a growler to go as my recovery drink for the race Saturday.
Helluva day!

Lots of great race reports from the weekend! I loved reading them all.
@skippygirlsmom congrats to you and Skip!! You both kicked kitten!
@MLS1582 I think you had a great time at your race and I'm shocked you were last with that pace!
@ROBOTFOOD , holy crap what a descent! My quads hurt just reading your post
@MNLittleFinn , great job by you and your mom, way to go!
@louubelle16, your race report reminded me of the one by @instantmartian, and I'll tell you the same thing. All that adversity you had to deal with in your race and you not only finished, you did great! Yeah, it sucked in the moment, but I hope you look back on it with pride for what you accomplished and how you persevered.
@_nikkiwolf_ beating your goal by nearly 13 minutes?!?!?! wow!! Great race, and report!
I know I'm missing some other racers out there and I apologize. There were 250 posts to go through this morning as I waited for my client and I just can't recall everything I read.2
