Diet drinks?

I think you hit it right on the head there bub. What makes you think. It's what I THINK.
Trust me, I use to drink soda ALL DAY, EVERY DAY! I feel better each day without it, I really do! (It was very hard for me to give it up!)
I also stated that treating yourself is fine, I just think it's better to drink water. Water is always better to drink.
I'm curious how many more times i'll have to say, great - drink your diet soda - this is my opinion!
On a lighter note, maybe i'll have steak tonight.
Guess what ingredient makes up 95% of diet soda....5 -

Just because you think it's unhealthy to drink diet doesn't mean it is.0 -
I have been reading through this thread now for about and hour or so..
OP you do not have to keep responding to everyone's comments/posts and keep saying "great, drink your soda... I think after reading through this it is pretty evident your stance on diet sodas.
So here is my 2 cents worth...
OP, you said it yourself a few posts back, no one's body is the same. And this pretty much covers the entire scope of the topic. I guess I could say that everyone will not encounter health issues, but there are some
with intolerance, allergies to certain things in certain foods and drinks, etc.. and so on and so on.
There was no one persecuting anyone here, it is just that your information is solely opinion related as it relates to you currently, and it appears when one disagrees or debates, it becomes a bit hostile.
But there really is no need for this to be debated here, if you search the entire MFP community including the debate forums you will find this already has been discussed at great length and continues to today!
We all here with non health related issues can drink this on occasion or even daily (not all day).. Its not a treat, it is part of what we drink in our daily diets including the gobs of water we comsume along with the soda!
No one is the same here!3 -
I don't think aspartame is healthy. I don't think phosphoric acid is healthy. I've had doctors tell me diet soda is not healthy.
You do think it's healthy. You've probably read something somewhere saying it poses no unhealthy side effects.
I have Dr and nurse friends that attribute most kidney stones to both REGULAR and diet soda.
You are defending something you feel very passionate about - and that is great! Okay? You're right, i'm wrong!
We good now? Because at the end of the day, i'm not going to go drink diet soda, and you are! And if you drink it consistently, you may or may not notice a difference.
I've honestly never even seen people defend prominent government issues as much as I've seen them defend diet soda today. Whoa.0 -

I honestly think there's a lot of people who don't know that and instead think it's some sort of evil liquid chemical.2 -

When someone asks a question, and you respond, you're going to give an opinion based off of your experience.

daniellek30 wrote: »I think what is interesting is that people assume just because they have had no issues drinking diet soda, then no one else will.
Every persons body is different, we have different medical issues or lack there of. +
Some people DO note weight loss when quitting diet soda, whether it be from quitting the foods that they also associate with it or whatever. Just because you didn't, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
Some people DO note bloating when drinking diet soda (such as myself, considering it is carbonation and all.) Some people don't! If you don't, don't assume that no one else does.
My opinion is that to boast of being a 'healthy living individual', and then to consistently drink diet soda is hypocritical. Obviously every one in a while to treat yourself is fine, but the ingredients in diet soda should be enough to realize it's not good for you.
Anything artificial is not fantastic for you. People can post all day how 'aspartame is not actually bad for you' and that's wonderful that you think that, but it's awful for me. Phosphoric acid is not good for you. It's put into the drink to prevent molding, and it is corrosive and if put directly onto your skin would cause a rash. I don't want that in my body.
You have gastric (stomach) acid in your body. It's composed chiefly of hydrochloric acid, which is highly corrosive and would cause a rash if put on your skin. Is that not good for you either?
The human body also has a level of salinity roughly equivalent to sea water - which is also highly corrosive/oxidative. Everybody has seen what sea water will do to bare metal. Just imagine, that's what is in the blood coursing through your veins!10 -
daniellek30 wrote: »I have not met one doctor, working with a ton of doctors, who has ever defended diet soda, and said it was good for you.Phosphoric acid causes corrosion. That is a scientific fact, not an opinion.Either way, I gave my answer - I do think it is BAD for you - again, that is wonderful that you all don't. Continue drinking it, and enjoy!
And just to be clear I am not defending diet soda, I'm trying to prevent the spread of misinformation and pseudoscience. I am also not saying it's healthy, just that it's not unhealthy for the vast majority of people who drink it.18 -
daniellek30 wrote: »Okay! You're right. I'm wrong! Again - if you'd all like to drink it, that's great! I answered the poster's question. And I'm moving on.

None. Yet you seem to keep doing it anyway.
OP - as has been mentioned: unless you have a specific issue with it, no, it's not unhealthy.

It actually isn't so much about defending diet soda. Like you keep claiming that you believe but your words imply otherwise... most people don't really care whether or not others choose to drink diet soda.
What people are passionately defending is the need for actual science and justification for claims that a substance is unhealthy. Not n=1 anecdotal examples or pseudoscience gleaned from blog articles.
People saying that there is nothing wrong with drinking Diet Coke in moderation are not saying this is the only thing you should drink. You are the only one here that keeps making blanket statements that everyone should stop drinking diet soda, that it should be outlawed, that the only healthy beverage is water.
It is those spurious, blanket statements that people are arguing against.

Who doesn't drink water? Is there some rule that you can't drink water and diet soda? There's even water IN diet soda.
I don't care that much about diet soda, since I prefer to get my caffeine in coffee, but similarly, it's really quite easy to drink both coffee AND water (and there's water in coffee).
I also don't understand the idea that drinking water is something OTHER THAN we've always done that we need to learn to do. I've always enjoyed and consumed lots of water, and don't see this as a skill one must learn. I also don't see it as inconsistent with drinking other beverages. I don't eat only one food, why would I drink only one beverage?3 -

Didn't you hear? If you aren't a clean eater/health oriented person then you only eat Cheetos and drink Diet Coke.6 -

I drink them all the time. I don't know why they would be bad if they don't have anything in them, but I read something about it and was curious.
Are zero calorie/or diet drinks bad for u?
That is the question that was asked. I'm really confused why i'm being persecuted for answering the question the same way everyone else would, with their opinion. She also asked if it made it harder to lose weight, and in my opinion it does. So i'm wrong, because of my opinion?
I don't think you are using "persecuted" correctly.
However, thanks for clarifying where you were coming from. I understood (and continue to understand) OP's question as about diet soda in general, not for people with particular sensitivities and health conditions. In particular, I saw it as motivated by a question as to whether it would be bad for her or her weight loss. Therefore, unless you were trying to claim it was bad for that IN GENERAL (as I see you were), I didn't understand why you were focusing on your health issues.
As for the claim that it makes it harder to lose weight IN GENERAL, for everyone, that's simply not true.1 -

Just to be sure, if I make my own tea every day and drink that almost exclusively because I like it over plain water, will someone come and tell me I have to drink water?3

You are correct - it is not true. I don't think it makes it harder to lose weight in general. I never said that.
I said it makes me bloat! And I saw the question focused on whether or not it was bad for you, and so I was giving an example based off of myself, that yes it was in fact bad for me.
I think the bigger point here now, is there is a way to approach people with your comments back to someone, without making them feel like an idiot and being hurtful. For example, the poster who says 'Didn't you hear? If you aren't a clean eater/health oriented person then you only eat Cheetos and drink Diet Coke.'.
That's not necessary, since no one said that.

Here's the thing. You can come in here with your opinions about it, and you repeat what you've had a doctor and a nurse tell you. But I can come in here with peer-reviewed studies and scientific explanations that, in appropriate dosage, aspartame, phosphoric acid, and soda as a whole aren't harmful and can be included in the average person's diet. Your health issues make you an outlier. If you're going to argue that diet soda is unhealthy across the board, you need to back it up.You are defending something you feel very passionate about - and that is great! Okay? Drinking soda or not, that's not the issue. The issue is perpetuating myths without scientific backing. There's too much of that in the diet and fitness world already, and the posters on here disagreeing with you are trying to stop the spread of misinformation. People will do that in various ways - with humor, with snark, with facts, with strong tone. That's the internet.5 -

That's funny (the bolded), because sites such as the University of Chicago's Kidney Stones Page doesn't even list soda (diet or otherwise) as a contributory factor. There are plenty of healthy "clean" foods that are very high in oxalates though. Furthermore, a study from the Journal of Endourology indicated that soda showed absolutely no causative factors for kidney stones.
If you have peer-reviewed sources which back your opinions, feel free to post them.
[ETA:] People aren't "defending" diet soda, per se. Rather, they're debunking pseudoscience and fearmongering for the benefit of others who may read this thread. Because these "Diet soda iz da debilzzz!" threads pop up three or four times per week on MFP.8
