My question of the day, is it better to get up at o' dark 30 to run when it is cool and get a really good quality run in or should I run a little later in the morning since unfortunately my race doesn't start until 8 AM and I am worried about the heat on race day but I know my training runs will be crap?
@kimlight2 my opinion is that you should run whenever it best fits your schedule, but fit in a few easy runs the same time of day as your race.
I don't feel that running in the heat makes for a crap training run. Heat introduces the body to different stresses, and your pace for a given effort may be slower, but you're still reaping the benefits in spite of the slower time. For most runs, a slow pace is not an indicator of a bad run. As much as I try, I'm often guilty of trying to keep up a certain pace on my easy runs, even though an easy run, by definition, should be easy. If heat makes it slower, so be it.
Last summer I timed my runs to avoid the heat, even looking ahead to the forecast to move my rest days to the hottest days. This summer I'm embracing the heat to allow my body to better adapt to it. The only time I'll avoid the heat is when I want to take Kody running with me.

1. Some form of exercise before work every day, even if it's only 20 minutes of yoga. I have found that this definitely increases my energy and my ability to stay focused on my work.
2. Try not to focus on mileage or speed. Enjoy my running and, most importantly, stay injury free.
3. Look into incorporating more trail running into my schedule. What little trail running I have done, I have enjoyed.
I will probably continue to post my miles to keep with the spirit of the thread, but not gonna set a goal...
@lporter229 these sounds perfect!!

I'm a little late to the party, but I really want to get back into running. It has been over a year since I did it on a semi-regular basis, so I'm hopeful that this will help me get back into it.
I'll set my goal for the month at 30 miles. I can do a mile a day. I hope.6 -
So this means that we should go barefoot running carrying an olive branch and say something nice to all the other runners going by us, eat some hazelnut cake afterwards, give the heimlich to the ones that ate their cake before doing a proper cool down, and then write about it all to their penpal.
Great plan!
@skippygirlsmom I didn't even make the connection between olive day and my name. LOL I do love me some olives though.....

My goal is 30 miles. I'm on week 7 of C25k so it should be doable if I keep up with the 3 runs a week.3

I'm going to try the Runners World Memorial Day to 4th of July - 36 Day Running Streak. I'm only commiting myself to one mile every day because I don't know what kind of injury daily running might set me up for so I'm going to take it slow and easy. Consistency is my issue to be worked on anyway. I usually walk in addition to this, but I'm not counting that.
So, 30 miles this month!!6 -
I'm still waiting to run today. It's driving me a little crazy.3

I'm waiting until after work. ~3 if there are no surprises. Facing the "good" lunch delimma. Relying on fast food never seems to pan out. I should have learned that by now.2 -
Thanks for creating this group! I'm new and am setting a June 2016 running challenge of 70 running miles. It's been awhile since I've run consistently. Today I logged my first 2!6

6/1 30 minutes
My calves are still pretty sore from running the Bolder Boulder on Monday so just 30 easy minutes for me today. My heart rate only got up to 157 on my first mile which is the lowest I think my heart rate has ever been by my first mile. Yay!6 -
Hi! New here. Thanks for creating this challenge. 70 running miles is my June 2016 goal. 2 done today ✅7

Got through 182 miles last month, despite getting in 6 rest days after my marathon. Only spending 11 days this month in Florida, and the rest up north, so I'll aim for 200 miles.
Ended up doing a bike/run workout this morning (33 mile ride @ 23 mph avg + 4 mile run @ 7:30 pace), as a triathlon teammate suckered me into joining him on his post-ride run in the 88 degree heat. On the plus side, the humidity wasn't too ugly so I was able to sweat, on the minus side, I probably pulled the paceline too much on the bike, so I was pretty shot when starting the run. Definitely not a fan of the heat, as the route was totally exposed, and my heart rate was well into threshold range despite running about a minute/mile slower than my threshold pace. Still, as my first "fast" run following my marathon (as I've been avoiding anything under 9 minutes/mile for the past month), I'm glad I decided to do it.
Small chance I'll do another (much slower) run with a neighbor this evening.
6/1 - 4 miles
Total: 4 miles
Goal: 200 miles
Remaining: 196 miles
Upcoming Races:
Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep
Chicago Marathon - Oct
Ironman Florida - Nov
@kristinegift - Huge congrads on signing up for the Via marathon. I hope the weather cooperates! As they say, the third time is the charm!4 -
Fartlek scheduled for tomorrow for 50m-1h10m...never done a Fartlek before1

@Ohhim Awesome workout! I don't know how you "real cyclists" go so fast. LOL Of course, I don't shift gears at all. I just keep it set so it's kinda hard to pedal because I like it that way. I basically cannot go uphill at all Great running pace too!
Oh, forgot to mention, my water bottle arrived yesterday! Woohoo! Gonna have to try it out Friday and see if I like it. Unfortunately my towel does NOT fit in the pocket. So close but won't zip. Boo. It's a small 12oz bottle but it's still a lot for my little hand, so I'm anxious to see how it works. I think the point is to have your hand sort of open?1 -

Generally, we cheat on the speed side by drafting the cyclist in front of us (as I was only able to average 22mph for my last half ironman 56 mile bike leg - where you are penalized if you follow closer than 10m behind the cyclist ahead of you except when passing) Following closely gives me about 3-5 miles/hour of free bike speed. Still, it was a small group on the ride this morning (only 3 of us were pulling the paceline), so my ratio of pulling/drafting was a bit higher than usual.2 -

Ah, that's cool. I suppose it also doesn't help that I'm going max .5 mile and often only .25 between each stop sign. LOL I don't completely stop unless there's a car, but I definitely slow way down and look both ways.1 -
My goal for June is 45miles.
3 -
Happy National Running Day all!!
Junes goal is 75 injury/illness free miles!!
June 1- 6 Miles
Congratulations RespectTheKitty on 3 miles well done!

@ohhim - what a pace! (bike and run!) I am still amazed at how much easier biking is in the pace line. I've noticed some people never pull. I always try to pull some because I think it makes me stronger - but I'm really amazed at how quickly the HR goes up when pulling compared to being in the middle.
Welcome to all the new runners!
I was feeling guilty for not running on global running day until I read @poppetsmaster post! LOL And those of you that said "you are resting on global run day so you can run!" That's my logic today. I've not had a rest day since May 19th and I am probably biking after work, so decided not to do my 4:30 run. Then again, if it rains and cools down, maybe I will run. Also, hate starting the month on a non-rest day.5 -
First run for this month. Happy running day. Decided I will also keep track of my heart rate sine I will be running at the same pace for all month mostly. So I want to see if it goes down.
On the sad part I heard there was another shooting at UCLA. 2 dead. That's sad

@greenolivetree I think my water bottle is like yours. When you put it on your hand it will really just stay there no need to hold it at all, of course you can't close your hand either. I get bored with it and move the water part to back of my hand and the strap around my palm if I want to close my hand or let the strap be more towards my fingers. Did you get one that squirts when you squeeze it or do you need to open the top? Skip has one you squeeze it very neat so you don't have a fumble with the top. I looked at one for her the other day that the part that holds the water is collapsible material. Very cool.1 -
I ordered this one (but from Amazon because I had $10 off coupon) http://www.amphipod.com/products/hydration/bottles-handhelds/handhelds/hydraform-jett-lite-thermal-12oz
I've never carried anything while running so this is new territory0 -
This is the waterbottle I just got: http://www.nathansports.com/hydration/handhelds/quickshot-plus
used it on my Long Run on Saturday. It took some getting use to carrying something, but I really like it. held my keys just fine.1
