OMG - trail running nightmare! Spiderwebs everywhere! I don't know if it was because it's more summer now.....or because nobody cleared the path before me....or they all started throwing up webs after the rain..... but it was the worst 2 miles of my life. I'm not counting it as a run. I averaged 3.6mph. The whole thing was me fighting webs, picking spiders off me, and possibly screaming and cursing :-o I was about ready to just curl up in the fetal position and cry until I was rescued :-( I finally got out, after having to turn and go back because a newly fallen tree was blocking the trail and you guessed it - the debris was full of spiders. I did run a little more on the way out because I had already cleared all the webs! Tried to wash off on the bathroom and drove to the trail with the crushed granite beside the concrete trail and figured maybe that would be okay in the trail shoes because I haven't worn them for a faster road run. So 4 miles at average pace 9:20 got done. Horrible humid and I was never so thrilled to shower as I was today, to officially be free of spiderwebs which had been in my hair and all over my glasses. Ugh. I need a hug :-D5

Yay for all the newbies! And thanks to all the seasoned runners for all your good advice. @Stoshew71 & @Elise4270 thanks for sharing about your running beginnings. It helps to know that even the really good endurance runners struggled at the beginning also.
So here's a question: how do you know when to push through aches & pains vs. stopping to prevent an injury? I always start my runs with achy knees. I'm super paranoid about reinjuring them & being sidelined forever. I had planned to run today, but my legs & knees are achy & so I was thinking to do the bike instead. My knees seem to complain less if I don't run two days in a row. But it seems like I'll never improve if I don't push myself more. I wonder if I'm being smart by being conservative, or if I'm being too cautious & paranoid. Any thoughts?
I just got a mention lumped in with Stan the man? Whoo! Movin' on up! *Insert dance party*
To answer your query, my take on when to add some recovery time:
1..If it gets worse during a run, obviously.
2..If I'm obsessing on it.
3..It alters my gait.
I'm a nerd. I love anatomy.
I have a few books that are helpful. Anatomy for Runners by Dicharry and Running Strong by Dr. Jordan Metzl, Runner's World's sports doctor.
If your knees are bother you it could be your hip alignment , or IT band, or both, or true knee pain. Maybe even your shoes. But the rule is hip down evaluation for women, feet up for men.
I had knee pain for a while. It turned out to be the result an altered gait due to hypermobility in my hips and the effects down the chain, classic. I can actually see that one hip is 1-2 inches higher. It is opposite of the piriformis muscle that caused so much pain. Tight gluteal muscles/IT band opposite the knee could be the issue. See? Maybe even weak medial glutes- if you sit, they are weak. (Everyone should address this muscle).
I though I was just deformed until a good PT got a look at me (2 chiropractors and 1 pt overlooked it). Now I know how to spot it and correct it before it gets bad, or go for help. I have developed a regular pre-run check list, everything is check for placement, flexibility and alignment!
I hope this helps and keeps you running! Pain sucks. Nothing wrong with being conservative. The difference between a runner and an athlete is knowing when to rest.1 -
Just finished my third week of a 5k training plan...I'm about half and half now. Half running half walking.

@greenolivetree The trails like that, my husband runs in front of me. We have had an abundance of them here this last week. Seems like we're relocating 2-3 a day. They might have had a population explosion with the inchworm infestation a few weeks ago.
I'll take spiders over ticks any day!
((Hugs))0 -
Working toward first HM.

@greenolivetree - That right there is my worst nightmare and would keep me from ever venturing back on that trail, maybe any trail! UGH!!!0
-
@Elise4270 and @shanaber I've been going to this trail since 1999 and never had this happen. The whole place was just web after web. I also saw a rat. Lol! And this heron.

Date Miles MTD ------- ----- ------- July 2 6.5 6.5
First post and already 128 in front of me. This group is lean, mean, and out of control!2 -
My goal for July is to have no running or exercise fitness goal, just run as much as I can, workout, and see where I end up. I know it sounds weird but i think I'll do more and better not having a "goal".
I decided that I want to run the Princess Half Marathon in February 2017. Not as a goal but hopefully this will give me something to look forward to, to keep me focused and training for something exciting. I've been on a weight loss plateau/struggle for the past 2.5 years it seems like. I lost lots of weight before and maybe I need to do some things that I did before. I signed up for a Disney 5k, trained for it, and was able to run the whole thing and lost weight during the process.
I've been wanting to run the princess HM since 2012 but life kept getting in the way....so I hate to wait till 2018 so I'm gonna try to make it happen 2017. I know I'll have so much fun doing it but I have no one to do it with. My friends aren't in to running or fitness for that matter. I think I'm gonna save up for some good running sneakers and just do the damn thing!
Anyone planning to do the upcoming Princess HM 2017?

July Running Totals (miles)
7/1 – rest day
7/2 – 13.14 paced run
July total to date – 13.14
Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Become comfortable running 5 days a week. Finish Shoreline in good shape, managing the expected heat and humidity better than last year. Build base toward Rochester Marathon.
Today's notes – Woohoo, I ran 10% of my June miles today! More to the point, I ran 13 miles for the first time since Flower City. It's been a long road to recovery.
Got great weather at 7 AM, 57° F (14° C) and reasonable humidity. The assignment was to pace 7+2+2+2 miles at an 8:30 pace, for the various mileages different training programs needed. In practice, I got 2 marathon runners in my group. One wanted the full 13, the other wanted to cut it short at 11 to make a later social commitment. Otherwise, she would have been good for 13.
Technically, the pacing was a bit of a comedy of errors; but it worked out okay. After Thursday's out and back, I was really feeling natural around an 8:00 pace, when I was supposed to be pacing 8:30. Christine had forgot her watch, but I knew she was good for 8:00 because I've run with her before. I asked Mark to call me on it if I crept too fast, and he mostly didn't. Tried to slow us down several times, and it didn't stick.
That cool weather and low humidity just felt so good!
We had a stop at not quite 6 miles, because a drawbridge was up. At the time, it didn't seem worth the effort to pull my phone out of my pouch and take a picture of the raised bridge or the ship that passed below; now I regret not making that effort. Got through the rest of the first 7 fine. The next 2 miles had a lovely out and back on the pier at the mouth of the Genesee River, running about a quarter mile surrounded by river and Lake Ontario, then back. I love that scenery. Then we had a confusing tic sheet through the park, which I misread. Came out at the wrong place (reconstructed that later), which resulted in not finding the correct road to turn on. Ran around figuring out what went wrong, and when we got back we were up to 10 miles. Christine decided to do another out and back on the pier to finish her 11. Mark and I did a modified 3 more as an out and back for a different partial preview of the Rochester Marathon course than the part that was in the first 7 miles.
The result on my watch was 13.14 miles in 1:45:49, for an average pace of 8:03 per mile. Oops. I was channeling my inner 8:00 pacer, when I was supposed to be pacing 8:30. Mark wasn't troubled. I had paused for the drawbridge and a rest room break. Mark had not paused for those, and he showed an 8:30 average. Go figure.
From my perspective, this was a wonderful run. First time I've run 13 miles since Flower City. Heart rate in Zone 2 59% of the time; lower humidity really helps with that. I could feel the recovering leg, but less than after other runs and stretching took care of it. Assuming I run something reasonable tomorrow, I'll have my first 5 day running week and my first 40 mile week since Flower City.
Life is good right now.

@MNlittlefinn why did I think your HM was today? Okay you'll kill it on Monday LOL!
@greenolivetree the EMTs would have to come and revive me if want through webs and had spiders on me. UGH! Yuck! No! No! I pulled my pool strainer out of the pool yesterday and there was a black widow in it, I wanted to throw up.
Great start to the month everyone. Super job getting out there in the heat!
Skip ran today for the first time with her running Coach. She was away in Europe so they were working together online not face to face. She was wonderful. When Skip and I got in the car to leave she looked at me and said "I can't thank you enough for paying for this. I love her and in an hour learned so much from her". They ran at the local college so I did some walking I saw them at one point, they were doing drills and I could hear them laughing and having a good time while training. Afterwards she told me that she always wants Skip to love to run, when it's a job and stops being about the love of run she should quit running. She was saying one of our local high school has their kids running twice a day for 100 mile weeks. She just shook her head and said most of their kids never run again after HS because they are burnt out or hurt.4 -
@greenolivetree Somebody needs to tell your heron to stop fishing and go eat those spiders! Ack! I hate the feel of webs. As long as I know where they are, spiders don't bother me...but I sure don't like the thought of running through a web and wondering if they're on me!
@1TheQueenB I'm doing the Wine and Dine half this November and ran the Princess last February. It was a lot of fun! I'm not really into races (I much prefer to run alone), but having a big goal like a Disney race helps to keep me on track, too. One thing I'm really excited about for this one is that it will be a "cool" race (hopefully, you never know about FL!) after a warm summer of building up my endurance outside. In February I'd been doing all my training on a treadmill and it was a bit of a shock to my system to hit the pavement for the first time in a long time for the half.
Yesterday didn't have any time for a run, and today I only got in a quick 3 miles while my 9-yo was at gymnastics. Started out with my knees pretty stiff, but after I got up the big hill everything fell into place and in spite of several waits to cross the street I made decent-for-me time. Supplementing my iron is helping my endurance, for sure, as is just trying to do all my runs outside, I think, even if my speed still isn't where I'd like it to be.

I'm in. My goal is 100 miles: walk, run & treadmill.6
-
Today's run was way better than yesterday's even though this was not the run I had planned. Today I was going to run my ShePower virtual HM but had technical (iPhone) issues that kept me from getting out early enough. I thought about just going without it but I use the app on my phone for the distances and I can't imagine running 13 miles without music. So I will run the virtual HM on Monday instead... Just means I can eat more that evening right???
Also note between yesterday and today I got in the miles for it, just across 2 days - LOL
I hit my MapMyRun challenge today - 1000kms for the year! Since it is only the first of July I am going to try to hit 2000+ by the end of the year. My original goal for the year was 1500 miles (2400kms) but there is no way I am going to hit that now but 1200-1400 should be doable and allow me to easily hit 2000kms.
I signed up for another HM, Surf City again. I love that it is local and I can roll out of bed and have my husband drop me off and pick me up.
Date.........Miles........Total
07/01.......6.28.........6.28
07/02.......7.36.......13.64
Upcoming Races - Let me know if you will be running too!

09/18/16 - Beat the Blerch Half Marathon, Seattle
11/19/16 - USA Invitational Half Marathon (Yay, I qualified again!)
12/18/16 - San Diego Holiday Half Marathon
02/05/17 - Surf City Half Marathon
@ereck44 - from your last post in the June Challenge... I love nice running socks too in addition to running shoes. I but mine on sale on Active.com and other similar sites - much cheaper than at the running stores or expos! The only problem is that I now have a supply of unopened socks just waiting for the old ones to wear out. My husband thinks I am stocking up to open my own store! Clearly he is NOT a runner!
@greenolivetree - I would have been in the water running next to the heron! I don't mind rats as long as they don't run after me but spiders I just can't deal with!
@vandinem - this challenge is crazy busy! I am just happy to have the weekend to catch up with everyone before work puts me behind again!
@1TheQueenB - I ran the Disney Star Wars HM in Anaheim 2 years ago. It was great fun but I don't think I would do another Disney race here in CA. Disney definitely knows how to put on a great event and make it fun and exciting and there are lots of runners of all levels and abilities. In Florida I imagine it is much more scenic than where the Disney races go here and there are too many other beautiful places to run and race here.
@MobyCarp - I am so happy to see you back running more and your leg recovering!
@skippygirlsmom - yay for Skip's new running coach! She sounds wonderful! Too bad she can't talk some sense into the coach's from the other HS team.
@HonuNui - another wonderful video! I love it when you go snorkeling and post these great pictures and videos!
@MNLittleFinn - Good luck on your HM on Monday! I am sure you are going to do great!5 -

Day 2: 6.5 miles (3.5 jogging, 3 highest incline on treadmill)
Monthly total/goal: 12.25 miles/ 75 miles (i increased from 50)
got a maybe hike tomorrow and a long one Monday for sure, can't wait!4 -
July 2nd - 8.5km (6:37 min/km... 162bpm)
July 3rd - 3km (5:23min/km...180bpm)
11.5/100km
My garmin is being wierd... can anyone help?
Its been randomly been deleting steps through the day (Over 4000 before a walk down to 2200 after a walk last Tuesday. 22000 down to 20000 last night and reset from around 2000 back to 0 this morning).
And when I was running this morning the calories were about 270 after 2.7km and when I finished the run the summary said 230 cals (and thats what its passed onto the website) - my average HR for those kms was a lot higher than yesterday but the calories/km are less than slower/lower HR splits from yesterday...3 -

36hrs of hell
Just got out of the hospital. I originally went to the quick care. But my condition was rapidly deteriorating even on the drive over. I got to skip the packed waiting room. They wisked me away. My entire body hurt and it was extremely hard to breathe. They send me to ER by ambulance (1st) and by that point I feel like I'm going to pass out laying down and I'm thinking the end is near. Docs start doing a bunch of stuff. After blood tests, they determine I have Rhabdomyolysis. That was surprising. They hooked me up to a ton of fluids and within 15 min I could stand and felt a hell of a lot better. I spend the night there (need the IV). Then a funny story, around 6am, I woke to the nurse telling me that my heart rate was 29bpm and she gave me Pseudoephedrine to hopefully speed it up. LOL. I then told her that I was a distance runner and it's usually in the 30s. We both laughed3 -

All I can think of is the house flooding on the 30th. I was bailing buckets and pushing water for hours. My adrenaline was high so i didn't really realize how hard i was pushing myself. It was extremely strenuous. That alone would likely be ok. But earlier that morning, I did a 2h hike on the TM at 15%. Which was also extremely strenuous. Early the next morning, I felt flu like symptoms. Unable to eat, drink enough and sleep, extreme fatigue and weakness. So i was definitely deficient in several things going into the docs that evening. Which multiplied my problems. So it was a combination of things. I'm alive though so all is good!
RUN FOR ME!4 -

Thank you! I'm feeling much better now! At the hospital, they pump a ton of fluids in you. Now that I'm out, I can't do anything for weeks. Eat, drink, rest. That's it. I have some follow up blood work appointments too. But if I start to feel different, I have to go to the ER.2 -

@robotfood sounds like they caught it early. Glad you are feeling better.2 -
@ROBOTFOOD Glad you are doing better! Order some pizza and put on Super Troopers. I'm so glad you sought medical help.
Edit: my charity miles go to you.2 -
@ROBOTFOOD Looks like we need to donate more miles!4

@ROBOTFOOD glad you're doing better.
On a different note, it's now been more than 24 hours since I've had caffeine. Goal is none until Monday. The Gu Rocktane gel I have should really give me a boost after this little spell2
