My review of the Camelbak Ultra 4 hydration vest after my 15 km test run:

    a3bk1l70tnm0.jpg

Lots of pockets! I love pockets!

On the back there's an outer pocket that would fit hat, gloves, or maybe snacks.

Then there's a larger back middle section to fit a windbreaker, first aid, and/or lunch. This middle section also contains a zipped mesh pocket for ID/wallet, and another flat section that could come in handy, plus a key clip.

Also in the back is the zipped section for the hydration bladder (the bladder is removable), and that section has a divider where you could fit more stuff.

On the front, on your top left is a waterproof zipped phone/iPod pocket. Top right is a pocket I put an energy gel in.

The lower front has two pockets which you can use for water bottles, and they have cords you can tighten to keep them in place. I put a bottle of Gatorade in one side and it didn't move or bother me.

I couldn't work out the hydration mouthpiece at first, but that was because I was biting it from the wrong sides.

The hydration tube can be clipped to the front while running. The clips are attached to the two adjustable elastic straps keeping the vest together at the front, and the clips can slide up or down to suit your build. There are also adjustable straps attaching the lower back to the lower front. The lower left area started hurting my bony ribs there a little, but I'm not sure that wasn't the fault of the type of bra I was wearing.

The water in the bladder made a sloshing noise sometimes, but it didn't feel like it was moving around. (I'd sucked the air out of it beforehand.)

The vest didn't move around or bounce when running. Even though I was testing it on my 15 km run, there was plenty of time I forgot about it.

I really like this vest! Can't wait for my next half marathon or further, and/or warm weather!

Nice vest @Orphia! Did it feel hot to wear it? I know you are in cooler weather but wondering if the vest makes you sweatier or not.

We had massive thunderstorms and rain overnight. It's still very humid and more storms likely this morning. How is there any liquid left in the air?

    8/1: 3.6 miles w/ the Coffee Crew
    8/2: 5 miles
    8/3: Rest day
    8/4: 7 miles (am)
    ...... 6.4 miles (pm)
    8/5: Rest day
    8/6: 10 miles w/ the Saturday Crew
    8/7: 18 miles
    8/8: 6.9 miles
    8/9: Rest day
    8/10: 8.9 miles (am)
    ........: 4.2 miles (pm)
    8/11: 5.3 miles (am)
    ........: 6.4 miles (pm)
    8/12: Rest day
    8/13: 10 miles
    8/14: 10 miles out of 16 planned

Well, today is a report of failure, but NOT DUE TO HEAT! Even though it was 79F when I left at 5 am (26C) with 83% humidity which meant a "real feel" of 86F (30C). My heat plan was working really well: I did a five mile loop with my 10 oz water bottle (which I'd frozen overnight so the water was cool the whole time) and then dashed into my house to switch the small water bottle for my 18 oz bottle (which was also frozen). I took off my tank but took it with me on loop 2 it to wipe my face and I instantly felt cooler with more skin exposed. The sun was barely coming up, so I'd gotten about 1/3 of my run done in the dark without sunlight adding to the "real feel" temperature.

Then about 6 miles in (about 1 mile into loop 2), I stepped weird on/in a pothole and tweaked my left calf. I took a bit of a walk break and then stopped to stretch it a bit but that didn't help. 1.5 miles later it was still twinging and feeling weird, so I decided that when I hit 10 miles at the end of the loop I'd call it a day. The heat wasn't getting to me yet (though I was totally drenched in sweat!), and I think I would have made it through 15-16 miles no problem. My legs felt fine and my mind was in a good place. But I have had issues with this calf on and off since I strained it two years ago, so I am not going to mess around with it. Best to play it safe today so I can run 20 healthy next week and then enter my taper in a good place mentally and physically.

Going to ice the calf and wear some compression sleeves while I do stuff around the house this morning and will postpone my Monday run til Tuesday.

Hope everyone who is running in the heat today has a good, SAFE run! Happy Sunday Runday!

EDIT TO ADD: For anyone wondering, since I think I mentioned these socks earlier in the week, I wore injinji toe socks today and I am eager to try them out on my 20 next week. Yesterday I wore regular Feetures socks and by ~8 of 10 miles my shoes were squishing. With the toe socks, no squish today and my shoes weren't soaked, even though the weather between yesterday and today was relatively similar. Plus yesterday one of my toenails dug into the neighboring toe and so the toe sock sleeves around each individual toe today kept the victimized toe from hurting which was a big win! I was really skeptical of these socks (they are hard to get on and look funny) but I am beginning to see their merit if you have incredibly sweaty feetsies like me :)

    Upcoming Races:
9/11: Lehigh Valley Via Marathon (Several Towns, PA)
(10/16: Halloween Half (Morristown, NJ) >> maybe)
    11/20: Philadelphia Marathon (Philadelphia, PA)

Well, after all the rain we had in the past 2 days, I really thought it would cool things down. Nope! it's 8am here and it' 70F (21C), feels like 84F (29C) with 94% humidity. After my heat exhaustion last Thursday/Friday, I'm really reluctant to go out there and run. I think a yoga workout will be on the menu today. I'll get back into my usual running routine tomorrow.

    Happy Sunday!

So I have completed my first week of half marathon training and I am feeling pretty good about it. I missed yesterday's 3 mile run so I made it up today and did my 3 mile run and 4 mile run together and completed 7.41 miles in total. Yay! Rest day tomorrow.

I also saw the 401 running challenge on my run (not planned) and it really kept me motivated. Lots and lots of other runners! If you were there today, you gave me lots of motivation to keep going!

    Logging 7.41 miles for today!

    Happy running everyone!

@Orphia thanks for the review! I am sold. I'll be saving up for one. Ya I've spent all my race/running fund already, even with no running. Race fees and some swimmy clothes  I need some come back shoes too.

    2Aug - 7m
    4Aug - 8m

    9Aug - 4.8m
    11Aug - 7m
    13Aug - 8m
    14Aug - 6.2

    52.6/100miles

Did 8 miles slow yesterday then did a 10k course today. Was tough as the folk I run with are faster and I struggle to keep up ( they slow down enough to keep me with them whilst pushing me as much as they can). My time is the same as my previous 10k race (66mins) 10 weeks ago and has been last few Sunday's I have run with them. I am concerned that I am not getting faster despite adding intervals, track work and lots of extra miles. I know people expect to go faster in a race but I am done by the end of my Sunday 10ks - nothing left in the tank at all. Anyone any idea how much difference it would make to my pace if I weren't doing a 5-8 miles on a Saturday? Just trying to judge wether I need to change anything or can rely on being fresher on the day of a race as I will run less that week (I just want to be faster to feel improvement I not competing with anyone else).

@juliet3455 No! It was no fun, my feet were soaked (still to face de-mudding those shoes) and I am itchy from the bites and nettles. I will stick to roads until I am less of a wuss. Before the track became wild I did stop for a moment to take a picture of a branch that I thought looked like a duck or animal or something.......ok so my mind wanders. gn2itkodyxzu.jpeg

I need to go back and read all the posts. Ran by myself today, Skip went to run with her Coach (Justyna). She didn't get a chance to run with her. Skip was saying Friday night her hamstring was sore, well she pulled it at practice Friday. She runs the entire summer with Justyna and one week back with her insane school Coach and she's hurt. Oh Lordie!

7km Trail run with 2 ladies from our club. The tall grass was wet from the rain and I didn't have my Smart Wool socks so the feet were wet for the whole run. I find that the extra length of the Smart Wool socks transports moisture from inside the shoe to the material above the shoe better than my other Sport socks where it evaporates = Drier feet.
