Nice work @katharmonic you're running that's the main thing, you'll get back into it soon. When I was getting back in I was lucky if I did 2 runs in a week and they took ages, now I'm managing much more. Slow and steady wins the race :)

October total to date – 11.95

Nominal Challenge Goal – no stated distance
Real Goal: Return to regular running

Today's notes – Went to club practice yesterday evening. I figured if I did the warmup with a group, and deliberately stayed behind the front runner, that would keep me slower and maybe that would help. Well, maybe. It's hard to tell, because the group ended up accelerating to right around the pace I've been running solo anyway. And the terrain had more up and down than I've been running on my own; it was a surprise that this made a difference, because there wasn't anything that looked like a serious hill. So I dropped off the warmup early, dealt with a stretch that was steeper downhill than I remembered, and finished on the track. 12 minutes, 1.42 miles, and the sore Achilles had enough.

Afterwards, I considered the terrain and the fact that this is the first time I've run 3 days in a row since Rochester, and I don't feel bad about it. Resolved that Friday would be a rest day (i.e., no running other than the morning hallway jog) no matter how good I felt. And this morning, the hallway jog went OK, but did indicate that a rest day might be wise. So I did not run for real today, though I did put some hills into my walk this afternoon. That created some interesting sensations in the left calf/Achilles, but I walked farther in one session than I have since being in PT, and I recovered to the point where walking inside on the nice soft carpet feel totally normal.

Oh, yeah . . . yesterday evening I booked my flight to Tallahassee in December. Club Nationals is a big deal for the club. I pay air fare, meals, and incidentals; the club pays for the hotel and the entry fee. If I'm not in shape to run the 10K on Thanksgiving, I'm out an entry fee; but if I'm not in shape to run 8K on December 11, I'll have paid for air fare to be spectator and cheering section.

I set out this evening on the trails for an hour long run, maybe more depending on lighting conditions. I was really dragging *kitten* today. I cut it off at about an hour because my footing was getting a little weak. That is one interesting thing about running on trails that I never have with road running. It helps me to cut many runs off at an appropriate time preventing my tendency to just push on. I suspect before long I'll probably be able to just continue on and will no longer have this little warning, but it's kind of nice right now.

    10/24 - Turtle!
    10/25 - Cookies
    10/26 - WAAH! WAAH! Sniffle!
    10/27 - Altra
10/28 - Nothing exciting to report. Sorry

There's nothing like working up a a 5 month training calendar, only to realize that you skipped an entire week out of the 3rd month and have to erase everything after that to put it in the schedule....

....On the bright side, I, in theory, could be running 16 mile long runs (34.8% of weekly mileage) like 4-5 weeks before the marathon plan calls for beginning training (12 week plan), and that plan's first long run is 114-1 miles

    10/3: 6 miles
    10/4: 3 miles
    10/9: 26.2 miles -- Chicago Marathon
    10/13: 3 miles
    10/15: 3 miles
    10/18: 3 miles
    10/20: 4 miles
    10/22: 3 miles
    10/23: 6 miles
    10/24: 3 miles
    10/27: 4 miles
    10/28: 3 miles

Goal was 3 miles at a 9:45/mile pace. Ended up running it at a 9:36 pace. I probably should have reeled it in a little bit, but I felt pretty good. Amazing the difference between running on the treadmill vs outside for me. My right shin is starting to ache and feel tender more than I would like, so I probably will decide to either rest or use the elliptical tomorrow in order to have a good run on Sunday. I can deal with my knee pain because I know how to make it better, but I get nervous with shin pain that is reminiscent of my stress fracture a few years ago

Hard to keep up with all these posts!

I have a love for Brooks Ghost (8) and will probably run in those until they don't work for me anymore. I did end up losing a toenail to them last year but that occurred when I ran Chicago and Baltimore back to back weekends, but they've been perfect otherwise. I've tried others recently but keep going back to those.

Speaking of Chicago, is anybody else miffed or frustrated about the surprise really early application/registration for next year? I don't think I'm entering into the lottery because of it. I haven't even paid off my speeding ticket I got when I went out for this year's race yet, haha.

Just a quick note - I decided to do a mini-taper for my 10K tomorrow. I didn't make my 10-miler Monday, did a couple of shorter-than-usual runs on Wednesday, and DIDN'T do my 5ish-miler this morning (just the 2 with Alan at lunchtime). I'll get up and do about 4-5 miles tomorrow, and then head over to my 10K. If I can beat 1:06:25, that'll be another PR within a week. Not REALLY expecting to do that, but it would be fun!

@MNLittleFinn if you weren't so old school you could just cut & paste instead of erase. ;)

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. I hate going back and forth between my calendar and excel on thr computer, so I hand write first. It's cathartic then everything goes into the computer

Anyway, now I have more than one pair of shoes (three...), how do you all keep track of their miles/know when it's time to replace them?

@louubelle16 - I track the miles on each pair by associating with my run in MapMyRun and I also keep track in my running spreadsheet. I have one that I track all the pertinent information: date and where I purchased them, expected and actual retirement date and monthly and total mileage. This allows me to try and keep the usage and wear distributed evenly over the months and track how much mileage I have on them overall. I expect to get around 400 miles per pair depending on the shoes. My current Skoras have almost 500 though and my older ones that I have since retired have 800 so it really depends on the shoes. I can though usually feel when they are starting to wear out and need to be replaced.

Really busy week and lots of running. Not able to post until now.

    10/1....12 miles.
    10/4....3 miles.
    10/7....1.62 miles treadmill. Total..16.62 miles
    10/8....13.1 (Indianapolis Half Marathon....average pace 11:58
10/9...Colts game...beer and a large pretzel....mistake...lots of swelling in left ankle.
    10/10...work
10/11...6 miles run, mixing up fast sprints, easy run, fartleks...felt good but unable to muster a fast pace or increase heart rate much above 90% max heart rate. The half marathon took a lot out of me.
10/16...8 miles at very, very slow pace...averaged 73% max heart rate.
10/19....8 miles at very, very slow pace.....unable to share heart rate due to heart rate monitor malfunctioning, but I ran almost 13 minutes slower than 10/16
10/21...3.79 miles at 79% max heart rate on the treadmill, no elevation, probably averaged 13:20-minute miles.
10/22....8 miles at 76% max heart rate on the Monon trail. Temperature at 59 degrees slight head wind. Worked at maintaining slow pace, focused on breathing and relaxing...not as tense as last time, started getting sore at end of mile 7.

    New runs posted:

10/25....8 miles at 77% max heart rate....still working on my base....super tedious. When will it end???
10/26...8 miles at 79% max heart rate....allowed 30-40 sec sprints x 7, one each mile except 1. I felt much better after running the sprints...8 miles didn't seem as long.
10/27... 8 miles at tempo run at 88% max heart rate....1st mile at 10:03, still unable to crack the 10 minute mile...very consistent at running all miles under 12 minutes, and a couple under 11 minutes (using old fashioned stop watch). No appreciable fatigue noted...could have run another 2 or 3 miles. Noted glute muscles tightening at about the middle of the fifth mile, no hip soreness....yay!

May get another run in on October 31st....working the weekend. Highest total of all running challenges thus far!

    Total... 87.51 miles.
    Goal... 75 miles.

    5/6/17....Indianapolis Mini-marathon
