I think that it's hilarious that people still think cleanses/detoxes are necessary even after seeing all the negative comments about them. They can't claim ignorance.11

Yup!
When I started here at MFP, I spent the first two weeks simply tracking everything I normally ate and getting used to logging and weighing everything. I didn't make any changes, just want to really find out what my 'normal' was.
It was an eye-opener, to say the least.
Then I started by making small, sustainable, incremental changes in my diet and exercise. As my calories went down and my activity went up, the weight started coming off.
It was really that simple and that uncomplicated.6 -

2 reasons you're going to get crapped on here:
1) "Cleanses" are bs. Nothing is being cleansed, although if it helps you as a starting point, great.
2) By giving us the name of the bs "cleanse" you're using, you've made a thread that looks like spam. This is why 3 people have reported this thread.

Just my opinion but think some of you are being a bit too critical. Just because something isn't for you doesn't mean it isn't great for someone else. I came across JJ Smiths book when searching for Green Smoothie recipes, as I wanted to incorporate more of these into my diet. I very loosely followed the plan along with high protein meals as well as shakes (since I drink protein shakes after workouts). She doesn't say you have to strictly do the cleanse and gives information how to modify. The author is a certified nutritionist and explains in great detail the importance of greens in your diet as well as the elimination of foods out of your system. This book is about a lifestyle change, which is key to any success to weight loss and good health. Personally, I found the book to be extremely helpful for more than just some recipes. You can't assume we all have healthy functioning livers and colons, etc... and that our bodies are just going to naturally do all the work for us. For some of us we need to get our bodies to that stage so that we can enjoy that healthy functioning and this book helped me to do that. I did not lose a ton of weight but instead learned how to change what I eat, how it affects me and how to make sure it is eliminated properly. I lose about 1 pound a week. Is it completely because of this book? No, but I credit it with giving me a good basis to start with and educating me as to how to change my lifestyle. To me, that is important. If this or anything else helps someone on the path to better health and weight loss then all the power to them. If you feel it's not for you, then just do you.4 -

Have you ever noticed they mention "toxins" but never list any specific toxins? Like what exactly are these toxins? Free radicals? Prostglandins? Cytokines? C-reactive protein? They use a touch of science to sound somewhat plausible but at the end of the day it is all puesdoscience.
If you are worried about your liver health go get a liver panel. If you are worried about your colon health get a colonoscopy.
I am glad the book helped you fine a sustainable pattern. To each there own. But many of these quick fixes require people to spend $100's of dollars on their products when they don't need any of that.
Also citing a quote from J.J. Smith doesn't mean anything, show me some published research done by independent researchers who are not profiting from J.J. Smith's products then we will talk.7 -

This is rude.
Don't assume I go to Starbucks, I don't. Two, for someone people, $10 is the difference between buying groceries and paying for gas for the week. I don't want them wasting it on this book when they are trying to lose weight. Three, it is still a waste of money.

I thought it was interesting that one of the things she sells on her website is an ebook ($19.95 for 66 pages) on how to make money, oh the irony Ooooh and look-she has a MLM set up and it 'only' costs $297 to get started-

Before you go, could you please name just one specific toxin that the "cleanse" removes from your body, and how it does it?
Because I've been on MFP for almost 5 years now, and not one single cleanse/detox advocate has ever been able to answer that question.7 -

Actually there's many here who do have advanced degrees in science, nutrition etc. And then a whole bunch of us who have been very successful with our weight, health and fitness goals. Which is why these forums have such a low tolerance for pseudoscience woo like juicing/detoxes/cleanses etc, especially when said woo is being pushed by someone who's running an MLM gimmick.

I usually leave the boards around February because of the mass redundancy of crash diet, juicing, and the start of the "I need to lose 50 pounds by June because I bought a wedding dress two sizes too small" threads. I come back just in time for the "how to manage the holidays" threads.5
