Real Goals: Continue recovery. Complete Race with Grace 10K on Thanksgiving without setting recovery back, even if I have to walk most of it.
Today's notes – For the first time since Rochester Marathon, I was confident that I had 6 miles in me on a Wednesday when there is a 6 mile group run. Got there, and there were only 5 guys in the 6-7 mile group. 3 of them are faster than I am. We started out comfortable (for me), and about mile 4 the speedy guys are running ahead. I know the drill, I have to let them go and stick with the steadier leader. Then the speed demons broke off on a turn the leader didn't expect, which would add about a mile and a half. Too much for me, so I went back to the store by a more direct route that I was familiar with.
It was good to have a headlamp and a handheld. The leader took us down some dark trails of varying quality, and my direct route for a solo run back to the store featured over a mile of trail. Ended up averaging 8:09 per mile, including a couple times of stopping to wait for traffic so we could cross streets. This was a bit faster than I wanted to run in some spots, but I got through it. The sore Achilles reminded me it wasn't totally healthy about 5.8 miles, but by then I was so close that I just finished the run and stretched well.
By the monthly total, you'd think I set a goal of 100 miles. I didn't; but the fact that I ran 100 miles in November shows either how well the recovery went, or how poorly I forecast the recovery. Take your pick.

Okay, well, obviously we HAVE to form a MFP Monthly Challenge Choir somehow. Maybe I can send out the sheet music, and everyone uploads a video to YouTube, and someone else (much smarter than me) combines 'em all to make a glorious group song!
Having a hard time deciding how to set a goal for December, since I know I'm basically gonna lose a week in Japan - @_nikkiwolf_ gave some great ideas, but I'm betting it's not likely to happen. So do I just plan on doing 75% of a regular month as my goal, or what? I know, First World problems.
Anyway - I hope that all of my running family had a great Thanksgiving or some other highlight for the month of November, and now we all move on together to The Solstice/Hanukkah/Christmas/Kwanzaa/Festivus/Eid...
Upcoming Races:
03-Dec: Reindeer Run (10K), Macon
26-Dec - 01-Jan: Random running in JAPAN!
14-Jan: Museum of Aviation HM, Warner Robins
04-Mar: Albany/Snickers HM, Albany

08-Apr: Running for Ronald 10K/15K, Macon2 -
Ok... planned to just go out for 7 more miles tonight, felt ok midway through the run, grabbed a snack, then continued on for 15.3 to pass my target. Ankle became a bit sore at the end, but glad I got in the run. Going to ramp things back up next month to my usual total, but need to figure out my spring marathon plan and biking goal before committing to a number.
Glad to hit the number, although I need to stop obsessing over goals, especially when I should be listening to my body after my big races.
11/1 - 5 miles
11/3 - 1 mile
11/4 - 2 miles
11/5 - 27 miles (26.2 plus two very long runs through transition)
11/9 - 3 miles
11/13 - 22 miles (10K race + 2 miles of re-positioning + 14 miles of marathon pacing)
11/17 - 5 miles
11/18 - 6 miles
11/21 - 12 miles
11/22 - 7 miles
11/24 - 8.5 miles
11/26 - 5.5 miles
11/27 - 7 miles
11/28 - 10.5 miles
11/30 - 19 miles
Total: 140.5 miles
Goal: 140 miles
Done!
2016 Race Schedule:

Any recommendations for running pants? (side note I'm part lizard and get cold easily and don't really overheat so I'm open for even the really cold weather stuff)
@Azercord As a runner from Northern Canada where the standard joke is we have 6 months of winter and 6 months of bad skiing my advice is based on my experience.
I have 2 sets of running tights - both are a Mid Weight Outer Shell style similar to the ones in the link - they are extremely Wind Resistant, Gore and Nike are the ones I have. Watch out for base layer tights that have zero wind proofing. Normally I wear one pair of tights and for personal modesty reasons a light weight recreational pair of pants over top of them. If it is extremely cold I might Double up on the Tights. Socks - Smart Wool Long to provide extra coverage to the calf are my Go To in the cold weather. Gloves I have multiple pairs of different styles. My favorite are these Mitt/Glove Convertible's. The Flourescent yellow part folds back to reveal a standard glove underneath.
The biggest thing I can advise is don't get stuck on Brand Loyalty.
@7lenny7 Like you and quite a few others I had 1 more run to complete tonight.
@skippygirlsmom I agree with all the others - Wishing - Hoping things get better for you and Skip. Great pictures as always. Skip is a Gem - you did more than one thing right in guiding/parenting her.
@kristinegift Laughing with you at the description of your muscle aches from your Gym Session and the challenges of changing clothes. Ah sweet memories of pain and aches.
11 km tonight - 5.5 km past Goal.
I was late getting back from a road trip so I missed the normal Wednesday Night Run Club. So I went out by myself for a lap of the Riverbank Dike Trail. Slow start but had a really good last 3 km as I put the pedal down and got back to my previous PB 5:29/km. For me that is .

November running challenge.
Still working on my base....going to increase to 10 miles per outdoor running....and, for treadmill...rolling hills with intermittent speed drills.
November 1st.....Moody Blues concert
November 2nd....9 miles at average max heart rate of 77%. Temperature was in the 70's, head wind on mile 4, started going faster instinctively, then remembered that these were to be slow miles working on my base. Noted sore hamstrings and glute muscles at miles 6 onward.
November 3rd....rest day (dentist)
November 4th...rest day
November 5th..rest day...Breeder's Cup racing on TV
November 6th...9 miles at average max heart rate of 77%.
November 7th...work
November 8th....4.04 miles on the treadmill, rolling hills...max heart rate of 79%. Still training in the zone...3 hours of sleep after working all night. 50 minutes of weight lifting session.
November 9th....6 miles outdoors.
November 11th....4.54 miles, rolling hills at max heart rate of 81%. Only 4 hours of sleep after working all night. May be my last run for the week due to family coming to Indiana, then busy work week afterward.
November 18....So unable to run for a week. Had a great visit with my mother and sister, and I bought a new student flute (at an antique shop). Woo hoo! Then 3 nights at work. 8 miles. Left leg with tightness and steady ache...felt wooden.
November19...rest day....still walking with a limp, tightness in left leg.
November 20...rest day....Tylenol didn't work. Still with a lot of aches in both hips. Tried ibuprofen....much better.
November 21....3 miles...left leg started tightening again on mile 3....only had time for 3 miles after my dentist appointment.
November 22.....4 miles....a little warmer day...43 degrees. Just running by "feel"....running fast enough to sing America the Beautiful...with some vibrato, think Burt Lahr of miles"The Wizard of Oz".
Legs felt much better...attributed pain with inflammation.
November 23.....6 miles.....ran it in steady rain and light drizzle....left leg tightened mile 3, better by mile 5. Feet were wet the whole time, wet soggy socks and shoes. Unpleasant experience.
November 30...9 miles....dry weather today...no problem with my left calf today, which was great. A little soreness in my hips and knees...got super tired after 5 miles...still working on my base. Average heart rate at 80% max.
Did not meet goal....mainly due to the weather, and the gimpy leg in the middle of the month. Will make more achievable goals next month.
62.58 total miles
Goal....80 miles

I decided to offer myself a distraction from running for a bit. Of course, I'm supposed to be headed back to work any day now... (Omitting work related rant) I don't feel that I'll be back to where I left off anytime soon. PT visit Wednesday, and I'll ask when I might be able run without trying to trip myself, without increased night pain .
I'll be teaching myself the violin and thinking about running. Then do some running and think about playing the violin. I think it'll help me find a balance and help manage/unwind/mental health. I love a challenge.
I'm sad that I'm not a beast any longer. Running is so hard. Y'all are crazy suckers. Prospective second surgery in spring. Poop. I need a productive outlet. I went through a dozen self taught German lessons, but no one to converse with. I mean my cat didn't mind but... So... Figure a violin will learn to talk with me in 1-2 years. Wonder if my cat will love it?
So excited for you! I think that's great! Are you going to rent or buy a violin?
2 weeks ago I bought a flute at an antique store...I played in middle and high school, and then intermittently through the years afterward. Then I gave it to my niece who wanted to learn to play it. I forgot how much I loved it...it's amazing how much I forgot. I re-learned the scales, and can play "American Patrol", and Christmas tunes, "The first Noel" and "Silent Night".
Don't expect your cat to be a fan....my cat's eyes got very large and then it tapped its paws at my flute...every time I played. Darn music critic.0 -

Get out! Wow, girl you sure don't look it! I know your reflexes are good, with all that silly running business you do! Bet you could manage an instrument.
Eta, I mean really? Am I the only one that thought she was 26 from the profile pic?
Oh, @Elise4270, bless you and @lporter229 and @skippygirlsmom. You guys are my new very best friends. I just turned 48. A close-up would prove it

I love Fesitivus!! Can't wait to air my grievances this year! Lol
Both Eids are over though. I had to postpone an international business trip earlier this year so I didnt arrive to the Middle East during Ramadan. Even if you're non Muslim, you can't eat in public sun up to sun down. Then I had to wait for Eid to be finished because everyone was on vacation (just like our Christmas, but it was in July this year.)0 -
Ok, *now* I'm done with November!
5.2 miles on a cold, misty evening. I got hung up on a phone call and didn't get out the door until after 10pm. I made the mistake of putting on my running shoes before the call and was pestered the entire time I was on the phone by Kody because he was anxious to get going. He was just beside himself with anticipation and was getting frustrated with me sitting on the couch. When it was finally time to go I thought he was going to launch himself through the screen door.
Final total for March is 101.6. Biggest month since May!

Finished the month last night with a crazy run through downtown Miamisburg, OH. This is the town where I work. It's old and has some big houses, B&Bs and pretty churches, so lots of pretty Christmas lights to look at. I thought it would make for a nice evening run since I was getting out of work late. The only problem is, along with all of that old charm, comes old, uneven sidewalks, cracked streets, big trees with lots of (wet) leaves and poor lighting. Navigating through the streets with my headlamp felt kind of like dodging land mines. I was actually glad to see the really big hill that leads back to my work at the end of the run, because at least it is evenly paved and well lit. Needless to say, my form for most of the run was a mess and today my legs are super stiff and sore. I did yoga this morning instead of my run, which I will do around my neighborhood after work.
On a positive note, I ended the month with 150.1 miles, 20 miles over goal. I will have to look ahead at my training schedule to set my goal for December. Congrats to all that made your goals this month, especially those that pushed through hard at the end to get it in (ahem, @Ohhim. You are a beast!). Well done!
@ceciliaslater -I hope that ankle feels better!

@lporter229 Great job on 150 miles!
@karllundy Sorry about life Hang in there
@honunui You killed your "goal" :-D A blizzard, for real? I need to click your link but haven't yet....
@7lenny7 Nice work!
@ereck44 If you did your best, that's what counts! I missed my goal by 10 miles due to 6 days off with shin/foot pain.
@juliet3455 145.5 km is awesome!
@respectthekitty Wow! Great mileage!
@ohhim That's determination/obsession/crazy I was unwilling to run 10 more miles last night to hit goal.
@9voice9 Very nice mileage
@mobycarp Very impressive recovery miles!
@ceciliaslater Yikes! I'm always afraid of dark spots on the road. Is that an oil stain or a pothole? We don't even have potholes around my neighborhood. LOL I'm more likely to trip on uneven sidewalk. Speedy recovery wishes for your ankle!
@Calvin2008Brian Perfection :-D
@BeeerRunner Great job!
@ddmom0811 Nice work on all that running/biking/lifting!
Anyone else on previous pages who did or didn't meet goals, each and every one of you are an inspiration!2 -
I decided to offer myself a distraction from running for a bit.
Darn music critic.
I purchased one. It'll be here Monday and I have an online lesson from the seller Tuesday. I'm sure my cats will be jealous that I'm petting something else. One of them is seriously jealous of you tube vids. I'll just slip 'em some nip.
It's great that you picked the flute back up! I played the violin a bit around the age of 10. I'm hoping I retained some of it. We moved around a lot. The next school only had band, so the violin went back. I was horrible at the school issued baritone.0 -
