10.1 road miles today, with Kody, puts me over my goal for the month. Amazing when I considering that there was an 11 day stretch with only a single 2.4 mile run.

I thought with me taking some time away from work, I'd be running less...strange how that hasn't worked out! I'm taking even more time off over Christmas, so I think maybe next month's goal is going to need to see an increase.

    04 - 13.25 miles
    07 - 10.53
    09 - 10.53
    11 - 11.18
    14 - 11.01
    16 - 11.02
    18 - 12.30
    21 - 12.42
    23 - 13.72
    25 - 7.89
    26 - 5.28
    27 - 5.29 (AM) + 5.32 (PM)

    Total: 129.74 / 100

    November running challenge.

Still working on my base....going to increase to 10 miles per outdoor running....and, for treadmill...rolling hills with intermittent speed drills.

    November 1st.....Moody Blues concert
November 2nd....9 miles at average max heart rate of 77%. Temperature was in the 70's, head wind on mile 4, started going faster instinctively, then remembered that these were to be slow miles working on my base. Noted sore hamstrings and glute muscles at miles 6 onward.
    November 3rd....rest day (dentist)
    November 4th...rest day
November 5th..rest day...Breeder's Cup racing on TV
November 6th...9 miles at average max heart rate of 77%.
    November 7th...work
November 8th....4.04 miles on the treadmill, rolling hills...max heart rate of 79%. Still training in the zone...3 hours of sleep after working all night. 50 minutes of weight lifting session.
    November 9th....6 miles outdoors.
November 11th....4.54 miles, rolling hills at max heart rate of 81%. Only 4 hours of sleep after working all night. May be my last run for the week due to family coming to Indiana, then busy work week afterward.

November 18....So unable to run for a week. Had a great visit with my mother and sister, and I bought a new student flute (at an antique shop). Woo hoo! Then 3 nights at work. 8 miles. Left leg with tightness and steady ache...felt wooden.

November19...rest day....still walking with a limp, tightness in left leg.
November 20...rest day....Tylenol didn't work. Still with a lot of aches in both hips. Tried ibuprofen....much better.
November 21....3 miles...left leg started tightening again on mile 3....only had time for 3 miles after my dentist appointment.
November 22.....4 miles....a little warmer day...43 degrees. Just running by "feel"....running fast enough to sing America the Beautiful...with some vibrato, think Burt Lahr of miles"The Wizard of Oz".
Legs felt much better...attributed pain with inflammation.

November 23.....6 miles.....ran it in steady rain and light drizzle....left leg tightened mile 3, better by mile 5. Feet were wet the whole time, wet soggy socks and shoes. Unpleasant experience.

May not make goal. Running out of time.

@9voice9 I've been in Kyoto twice - such a beautiful place! I don't think I could have done any running while visiting it, though. Not because there wouldn't have been places to run, but because my feet already hurt after all the walking around - don't know about my first visit, but the the second time I went there I took a step counter, and it showed more than 35,000 steps when I got back to the hotel at the end of the day. Soaking in the hotel's onsen seemed like a much more attractive way to spend the evening than running after that :-)
If you need any suggestions on what to see while you are there, let me know.
Where else are you going while you're in Japan?

@kristinegift those trail look like a lovely place to run.

@RespectTheKitty Congrats on your 10 mile run, great

@7lenny7 Sounds like you had some very nice runs over the weekend. Love the pictures!

    --

Yesterday was perfect running/outdoors weather - cold and sunny. I spontaneously changed my planned route when I passed through a forest, rather than just going through it in to reach the fields on the other side as I usually do, I decided to stay inside the forest to kick up some more leaves and jump some more branches. Fun! :p

The weather was so nice that I even went back out for a bike ride right after my run. That was less fun at first though - had a flat tire after 1.5km, put in my spare inner tube, but I overlooked the responsible glass shard and had the next flat tire another km later. No more spare tubes with me, so I had to walk all the way home and fix the bike there before I could make another attempt at a ride. That's one of those things that never happens while running...

I've only two running days left and am still missing 24km towards my goal. I was a bit puzzled when I realised it when I updated my ticker this morning, because I'm sure I ran all the distance I had planned. Finally I figured out that I summed up all five weeks of Hal Higdon's "Post Marathon Intermediate" to calculate my goal, but the month will already be over halfway through the last week of the plan (which isn't all that surprising if you look at a calendar, which I obviously didn't until know...).
Not sure what I will do - follow the plan and come up 10km short, or try to make the goal by ignoring the fact that today is supposed to be a rest day?

Knelt on tile floor last night to dig in a cabinet. Right knee hurting ever since. Aargh. Currently icing it. I really thought I'd sleep it off but I felt it through the night when I'd toss and turn. Will probably do some KT tape and hope I can run after work.

A little tired on day 6 of my running streak - hoping to do the holiday challenge, but have some practicalities I need to work out if I'm to do the whole period, (specifically how I can get out for a run when my 3yo is staying with me!).

Anyway, today was 8C and sunny so nice for running, though there was a killer headwind which knocked me on my behind between about 10k and 11k - my route had been pretty sheltered until that point so it came out of the blue when I hit an open park. Deliberately mixed up my route with some decent elevation changes (133m climbing total) and mix of surfaces (pavement and grass mainly, but a little trail section thrown in as well), just to keep my muscles guessing and keep it interesting.

Had a twinge in both knees at different points in the run - the right one persisting, which is why I halted the run at 11.7k rather than continued to 20k which is my planned long run for this week. 11.3k is what I had in the plan for Wednesday anyhow, so I'll do the minimum one mile tomorrow and aim to do the long run Wednesday all being well (though I'll have to be creative with my diary to fit it in!). That should see me hit my November target on the last day of the month!

    2-Nov: 13.1k - 3 laps of hilly route.
    4-Nov: 6.26k - Planned 11k easy, but cut short as very stiff/tired.

    16-Nov: 8.3k - 2 laps of hill circuit
19-Nov: 7.4k trail run at approx HM pace.
20-Nov: 11.5k - planned 19.5k long run but cut short due to tight left achilles.
23-Nov: 21.2k HM pacing practice [Distance PR]
    24-Nov: 4.4k (30 mins) recovery run
25-Nov: 6.3k "tired" run (HM pace)
26-Nov: 5.3k easy (actually nearer HM pace than easy)
27-Nov: 5.8k over three seperate starts when attempting a long run :(
28-Nov: 11.7k mixed run, (some trail, some hills, some road)

4 hilly miles in 38:26 (9:35 pace). Might actually have been a bit faster since I did quite a bit of fumbling with the watch and headlamp at both ends of the run. I did NOT want to get out of bed this morning but told myself I probably wouldn't end up running if I waited until this evening. I'm definitely going to need a few more cups of coffee to make it through the day.

    Total: 146.07/150

Today's notes: First "official" day of marathon training! Today's assignment (per my aunt/trainer) was:
    2 mile warm up @ 10:30
    6x400m @ 8:54
    1 mile CD @ 10:30

I ended up running a little short and a little slow. My average paces for warm up and cool down were pretty much right on. Paces for intervals and rests in between were off. I think that this has to do with my timing hitting the lap button each time around. I wasn't very consistent at getting it exactly right, and there was always some lag for the TM speeding up/slowing down. Other than that, a good run.

    After running came core work:
    50x crunches
    40x mountain climbers
    30x side crunches
    20x in and outs
    30x side crunches
    40x mountain climbers
    50x crunches

I didn't really ever feel the burn doing the exercises, but my abs were definitely feeling dead after the second set of crunches. All in all, it felt really good, and I'm clad I'm adding back in more core work. Hip felt pretty darn good, it only started to ache some 20 minutes later when I was sitting down driving...Moving doesn't bother it, sitting still does.

Took a rest day yesterday, setup my new Garmin Fenix 3 HR.

Looking at my ticker, I'm 10 miles away from my goal for the month with 20 of 30 miles. Not sure I can make it.

Every time I added, I put in round numbers from each run. Just went back to my app and added up in hundredths... got 26.73. I must have forgotten to log something (actually, I know there was 1 Add where I wasn't sure it had saved) because I don't think that is all from just rounding. Anyway, I'm going to update my ticker next time I get to my home computer. I now definitely think 30 miles is achievable.

So a little more explanation on the football game we had. I have 7 cousins who are all grown up and are married and have families of their own. Instead of trying to figure out who is doing what on Thanksgiving, my Aunt and Uncle basically said, everyone can do whatever they like on Thanksgiving, but the Saturday afterwards we all have Thanksgiving dinner together. As part of the tradition there is a football game that involves all the male cousins and some of the children from all the family. Ben and Rob are always the 2 team captains and pick teams at the last minute based upon who has elected to play. Add to this, the men love this one Thanksgiving dish, cheese covered brussels sprouts (which I am not a big fan of). So they called this annual football game the Brussels Sprouts Bowl. The trophy is this big pot (which exchanges hands between Ben and Rob depending on who wins that year). And the winning team writes all of their names on the pot for that year. So it's actually a big deal. I played in the very first game back 5 years ago and my name is on there, and I played this year (but was on the losing team). I should have gotten a picture of the pot.

They have waist flags, endzone pylons, and they actually paint the black borders and mark first downs. And they keep time (2 30 minute halves). So this is a big deal as some of you pointed out from the picture. It is a lot of fun.

I must be a runner...I've been consulting Dr. Google too much today. I think I might have Bursitis or an IT Band issue. When I do IT Band and Hip stretches, I can feel than I'm really Stiff. Going to ice my hip/IT band after work today. Waiting to hear if the Sports Medicine docs have any openings. Thee's only like 5 in the area, and they aren't always within easy driving distance.

Good news is that there's no pain when running, I only feel anything when I'm sitting down or, occasionally, when I'm walking.

Only 5?! For me, there is 1 advertising "sports medicine" about 25 miles away... a chiropractor that includes this not as a unique specialty, but as just one of his areas of practice. There are 2 orthopedic doctors that visit on occasion from larger cities. I would think they could qualify under sports medicine, though probably deal more with aging issues. Rural areas just don't have those services. There are plenty in the nearest city around 80-90 miles away, though.

The area is the size of Connecticut.... arrowhead region of MN over to ND..... Luckily I work near where some of them practice when they are in town. Problem is that it's a smaller clinic here, so there really is only a sports medicine doc within 50 miles like 1-2 days a week.

I realize CT isn't square, but just to make the math simple. CT = 5,543 square miles (Google) Square Root of 5,543 = 74.45 If you are in the center of such an area, then 74.45 / 2 = 37.23 miles to get to the edge So it could be a bit bigger than the size of CT, more or less. In either case, it sounds like we are in similar circumstances. The rural midwest just doesn't have that same access. I'm guessing that dr. probably comes in from a larger city like the twin cities, Fargo, Grand Forks, or Duluth? In my case, I believe the orthopedic drs. come from Omaha. My endocrinologist comes in once per month from St. Joseph, MO and is the only one here. I notice a lot of people don't want to travel very far, but on weekends I'll visit Omaha or Kansas City or somewhere else for various activities. I don't have time to do that very many weekdays (and then only at night after work), but this is the benefit to having a car. Because of dr. hours, though, that means taking a half day at least off from work to visit a dr. in the city.

@7lenny7 That Donut Day run sounds awesome, but I'm already registered for another 5k that morning. My family is doing the Jingle Bear 5k in White Bear Lake. Congrats on your running purchases this week! Please let me know how you like your Vivosmart HR; I'm thinking about upgrading to one from my Fitbit Charge HR.

I've been a bit MIA lately. I had a horrific migraine on Wednesday and was a bit sensitive to light (read: computer and phone screens) the next few days. Then, we had family time and threw a party at our house.

My family ran a 5k Thanksgiving morning. I took it easy because I had spent the previous day in bed with that dang migraine. If I pushed too hard at the race, I got lightheaded, so I took a few short walk breaks so I didn't pass out. My pace was much better than I expected, considering. I finished in 33:40. This was also the first race that my son didn't run with me more than the first block or so - he PR'd with a 31:04 (faster than I've ever run a 5k). I'm so proud of him! He's finally gaining enough confidence in running to run his own race at his own pace. We're working on convincing him to give cross country a try.

Week #1 of marathon training is officially done and I'm on to week #2!

A mIshap and a miscalculation led me to push off my long run from Sat to Sun and . . . finally, to Monday morning. I'm off work today, so decided to knock out the long run I should have done 2 days ago. Glad I did, as it was a lovely morning. A bit breezy, but seriously unseasonably warm.

My butt hurts. Have I mentioned that? ;-) This is the chronic running niggle that has plagued me for over 5 years. I know what to do (stretching, foam rolling, lunges, squats) but I've been crappy about doing those things and it's starting to show now that my mileage is starting to pick up a bit. It didn't used to bother me while actively running, but today everything after the half way mark was fairly painful.

I just realized that there are only 2 more days left in the month!

It looks like I'm going to squeak by my goal with just 2-3 miles to spare. Since I'm adding in other cardio and cutting back some on mileage (Long Runs are same, just a higher % of weekly miles) I'm thinking that next month's goal will not be as high.

@lporter229 great job running with you niece! Sounds like you created a memory that will last her a lifetime!

I got lucky this weekend, my mom offered to run with my wife so I could go PR hunting. It paid off for all of us. I got my PR, my wife ran her first 5k (first run longer than a mile in a LONG time) and my mom got to see what real easy running was like.
