I fell off on tracking this and really running but I am now going to try to do the Runners World Challenge and run at least a mile per day from Thanksgiving to New Years so will try and track here to get myself geared up for the new year and all the races I have planned in 2017.
11/24 3.2 miles0 -
ran my race.
6 min slower than last year but it's to be expected with little training and smoking again.
it was a nice race. about 2k people. i ran the whole thing which i was surprised. refused to give up.
but they ran out of cinnamon rolls this year. so more pie for me
it was bittersweet. it was my first race last year and my husband drove up and down the road(we are on a path) and cheered me on.
spent the rest of the holiday with my family and his1 -

Still tired from my efforts earlier in the week, (plus had done some indoor cycling and strength work this morning), so decided to use today's run to practice running tired and do 5k+ at HM pace. It was 10C and sunny but *very* windy - into the headwind I felt like I was going backwards at times. Bad route choice meant much of the tailwind section was sheltered so didn't even get most of the payoff! Anyway, I managed 6.3k before calling it quits, but definitely pleased with the weeks efforts.
2-Nov: 13.1k - 3 laps of hilly route.
4-Nov: 6.26k - Planned 11k easy, but cut short as very stiff/tired.
7-Nov: 11.25k long run.
9-Nov: 6k fast
12-Nov: 18k long run [Distance PR] Very wet.
14-Nov (AM): 5.1k easy. Wet and sluggish (no warm-up)
14-Nov (PM): 10k as 5k tempo + 5k intervals
16-Nov: 8.3k - 2 laps of hill circuit
19-Nov: 7.4k trail run at approx HM pace.
20-Nov: 11.5k - planned 19.5k long run but cut short due to tight left achilles.
23-Nov: 21.2k HM pacing practice [Distance PR]
24-Nov: 4.4k (30 mins) recovery run
25-Nov: 6.3k "tired" run2 -

WooHoo! Did my 5 miles in 1:01:30 this morning. That is great for me as I am generally not a fast runner at all. I am noticing a difference in my running of late. I am getting more extension and my husband says that my form looks better than the last time he ran with me a couple of weeks ago. It certainly feels better for the most part, though the little aches come in different spots now (today it was the glutes!). I am starting to push harder the last half mile or so, too. By god, I may turn myself into an actual runner, yet.
Have a great day everyone!
Upcoming Race:
12/3 Snowball Run 5K, Kingwood TX

Happy belated Thanksgiving to all of the Americans out there! And happy Friday to everyone. I'm at work today, one of about 5 people here, it seems. I work for a bank, so we aren't allowed to be closed multiple days in a row. I didn't want to waste a vacation day on a day when everyone would only be working partial days anyway (we always leave early the day before and after a holiday, since very few people are around).
We didn't do anything super special for Thanksgiving yesterday. DH and I stayed home by ourselves, lit a bonfire (he cut down a bunch of brush at the new house and we burned it, along with a brush pile that was left by the previous owners), and cooked Mexican food--carnitas, bolillos, green chili/green chile stew. I had planned to make a winter fruit pie (cranberries, figs, apples, and pears), but decided to put that off until this evening, since we both ate too much Mexican food and weren't really craving any pie.
Got up this morning, drove to work--no one on the roads, which was nice--and stopped off at my desk for about 2 minutes. Then, off I went to run the Turkey Trot 5K. It started and finished just a few blocks from work, and started at 8:30 this morning, so I thought "why not!".
Weather was good for running. A bit breezy, cold (35-ish/~0 C). The course was quite hilly. My Strava map makes it look flatter than it actually was, which is a little annoying. The course started with a long sloping uphill for the first 1/3 of a mile or so, then a long sloping downhill to the first turnaround. Then we got to take that back up almost to the crest of the hill and turn north, to a downhill (yay!). The course continued north, over the railroad tracks--NO!!--it's a super duper steep bridge that you have to take to get over the top of the tracks. For some reason, my mind thought we'd be going north on Elgin (crossing the railroad tracks) rather than going north on Detroit and going over the top of them. Guess I should have looked at the map better. Anyway, once we crossed the tracks, we headed east over to Elgin, then cut back north--slowly sloping uphill again, until the turnaround point. Then back the same way to 3rd street...which meant taking the same bridge over the railroad tracks again, with the steeper side uphill this time. Down the railroad bridge, up the hill to 3rd street, turn west on 3rd, continue uphill for another 1/4 mile, then a slowly sloping downhill to finish it all out. So, we ran every segment of the race in both directions--kind of a three-pointed out and back course. All those lovely downhills on the way out were cursed in the opposite direction, and I was thankful for all the uphills I'd done in the first half when I was on the way back.
Splits were:
Mile 1: 9:31
Mile 2: 9:52 (first railroad bridge crossing)
Mile 3: 9:54 (second railroad bridge crossing)
Last 0.1: 8:26 pace
Total time: 30:44 --Goal was to be under 30, so BOO on not making it. BUT, that's still a new 5K PR for me. Previous was around 32:30, about 4 or 5 years ago.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Congrats to all the Turkey Trotters! I didn't sign up for a race yesterday and decided I was going to try to get in a long-ish run since I won't really have an ideal time to run one the rest of the weekend. I ran 9 miles in 1:29:24 (9:56 pace) but it was a bit of a struggle. I didn't sleep well the night before so I was a bit sluggish and for some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to plan a route that had a lot of hills the last 5 miles. I had quite a bit of shin and knee pain as well. I had planned a slow 4 mile recovery run for today but my shin was still bothering me quite a bit the rest of yesterday. It felt okay when I woke up this morning but I jogged my hallway a few times and could tell a run was not a good idea. I have a second Thanksgiving dinner tonight and will likely be eating (and drinking) a lot of calories tomorrow as well while tailgating for THE Game (OSU vs. The team up north), so I decided to reacquaint myself with the elliptical at the gym. Tomorrow is another planned rest day, so hopefully the shin will feel up to a short run on Sunday.0 -
midwesterner85 wrote: »So two weekends ago I bought my daughter a new pair of running shoes, and told her they were only for running. Guess what I saw on floor in the entry way after she came home from college...yep, her running shoes. I could tell from the dirt she had been wearing them more than just for running, if she even did do any running. I'm not happy and may tell her that's the last pair of running shoes I buy for her.
Maybe she needs some walking around shoes too? Or just bonding with them.
Perhaps this.
I'm starting to get ashamed of how many shoes I am starting to have... and I just bought 2 pair last weekend because I needed some new walking around shoes and they had a special for 1/2 off your 2nd pair. Prior to that, I bought a new pair of hiking boots less than 1 month ago. Problem is that I never seem to get rid of the old. My old hiking boots have a hole in one of them... I have worn them only once since buying the new, but why can't I bring myself to throw them out? The old "walking around" shoes are now my "yard work" shoes - the reason I needed new is that they are very worn and they are stained from lawn mowing anyway. It just seems like I now have so many shoes - 3 formal (at varying levels of fancy), 2 hiking boots, 1 work boots, 1 yard work, 1 road running, 1 trail running, 1 gym, and 1 everyday walking around / shopping / whatever.
ETA: Oh yea... and a "walking around in house, but not something I would wear in public" pair... not slippers, technically. And I have a pair of water shoes and flip flops. Listing these out makes me feel even worse. It's crazy. I probably should get a shoe organizer.
I can totally relate to this....too many shoes....I will throw the ones with holes away. I have a shoe tree (organizer) but still so many that the organizer can't hold all of them.Like you, my old shoes become yard shoes. Only 2 pair of running shoes thus far!
Say, anyone else collect outerwear....I have quite the collection.. I just drool over a pretty coat.
I have over 300 pairs. Every shape and color and pattern. I have lots of leopard print. I love shoes. I have at least 8 pair of running shoes in rotation and 4 pairs in boxes. I have to stay out of the Nike outlets or I bring more home.
Over 300? I bow to the master. LOL I think I am at about 40? I stopped counting. I have been obsessed with casual sneakers lately. I spent so much at DSW this year I moved to premiere status.1 -
2.66 run today and 1.33 walk. Shin and foot feel okay. My calf was soooo tight last night, I had to lie on the floor and let my foam ball just dig in1

11/25 – 5.65 Black Friday Waffle Run
November total to date – 75.20
Nominal Challenge Goal – 30 miles
Real Goals: Continue recovery. Complete Race with Grace 10K on Thanksgiving without setting recovery back, even if I have to walk most of it.
Today's notes – The local Fleet Feet has a recreational "Waffle Run" each year on Black Friday. There are routes of 2, 3, or 5 miles. Well, that's 2-ish, 3-ish, and 5-ish. You might ask, what is a Waffle Run? You run the route appropriate to your conditioning and energy level, then come back to the store to eat waffles and look at the Black Friday specials. I'm a maple syrup kind of guy, but a friend had a more photogenic plate:
I ran the 5 mile route. It came out to 5.65 miles in 45:58, for an average pace of 8:08 per mile. My heart rate never went above Zone 2, no doubt helped by the fact that it was a fairly flat route, with most of miles 4 and 5 on the Erie Canal Trail. The recovering leg spoke up gently after mile 2, and reminded me it's not totally better after the run; but I was able to do my cone touches and recover to feeling normal promptly. It might have been wiser to take today as a rest day, but the Waffle Run is something of a tradition now.
At this point, I am declaring that I have met my goals for November. I am able to run regularly. I completed Race with Grace yesterday, and I can still run today. Recovery moves forward. I blew past the nominal mileage goal some time ago, but the mileage isn't really that important. Feeling good while running is important, and for the most part today I was noticing a pleasant run at 41° F (5° C) with a light mist in the air. The recovering leg is still there, but it is no longer dominating my attention.
No, I'm not all the way back. The training program has an 8 mile route as the shortest option tomorrow. I'd like to think that 8 miles is No Big Deal, but my rational side says that's a big jump up from a bunch of 5 mile runs and one 10K race. I think I'll sleep late tomorrow and maybe run a long 6 miles on my own. If all goes well, 8 miles might be No Big Deal a week from tomorrow.

Depression not as bad today, but work is still frustrating the *kitten* out of me...
I did manage to get outside for a run today. I intended to do 5 miles, but I just felt so good that I decided to make it 10k. THEN at the end of the 10k I was still feeling good so I took it out to 7 miles. At that point it started to rain so I decided to call it a run. I wasn't cold during the run, but as soon as I stopped and started doing my stretches, I was freezing. I think it got up to 40F today, but it was probably on its way down when I was out, since it was late afternoon and cloudy and drizzly. I was still freezing when I got into my apartment, so I had a hot shower, which felt really good. Then when I got out of the shower I was freezing again. Got dressed, even put on a fleece, and I'm still kinda cold. I'm usually cold, but today is worse than usual. Brrrrr.
This weekend is gonna blow without my son around. At least I won't have to look at the super frustrating work project for a couple days.
Oh, and I'm almost at 100 for November! Looks like I'll make it after all.

I done 4 miles tonight at a steady pace hamstring felt OK.

@RespectTheKitty WHOOO! Very nice run! Hope some tea or hot coco warms you up! That happens to me too.1

Not as hot as yesterday but I just wasn't feeling it. I kept putting it off and once I headed out I had to go back and switch shoes. The Merrills were making my Achilles hurt and I had barely gotten down the street so I knew they weren't going to work. After I headed back out I got less than a mile and was winded and dizzy so I stopped and sat down for a minute on a neighbor's wall. My HR was fine so I don't know what the deal was. The rest of the run was fine even though my legs felt like logs. Tomorrow it is supposed to cool down and even rain (YAY!) I am hoping to get in a longish run - maybe 10 if my legs cooperate.
I did some Black Friday shopping today while I was procrastinating heading out the door for my run and bought 2 new pairs of running shoes. I found the New Balance shoes I have had my eye on at a great price so I went for it
Going back to our discussion on shoes I never thought of myself as someone who is infatuated with shoes and didn't really realize how many I had. I tend to buy shoes when I need them and buy good ones that last so I seem to have just collected a bunch over time. I did decide it was time to go through and clean some out that I don't wear much. What I do seem to be addicted to is running clothes - I have so many pairs of capris, leggings and shorts and a SO many shirts! I basically just tell myself - you do NOT need any more running shirts/pants/shorts!
@Calvin2008Brian - love your snowy trail!
@ddmom0811 - maybe you need to run your mile before you ride as a warmup?
@k80flec - Look at you already past your goal with almost a week to spare! Great job!!
@MobyCarp - Awesome run coming off your Achilles injury! I love the RwG jacket and shirts and it is always great to get a cash award! Congratulations! Also I really need to get FleetFeet to open a store in So California! I love their events and all the fun things they do. It is crazy to me that there isn't a decent running store anywhere near me - before I started running there were apparently a few (RW still lists them) but they are all out of business.
@katharmonic - Congratulations on your 5k PR! Also thank you for the Irish Cream recipe!
@Orphia and @ddmom0811 - I love Fibonacci! I loved studying it and working with it - so fascinating! (geeks r us )
@oberon21- 300 pairs of shoes! Wow! Where do you put them all?
@lissadecker - Nice job getting that 5 mile time! It is nice to see the time drops as you run more - it is definitely pretty exciting!
@ceciliaslater - Congratulations on your Turkey Trot PR! Nice job conquering that bridge - twice!
@Elise4270 - where is the picture of these new shoes? Have you been released to run again - did I miss that?
@RespectTheKitty - So glad the depression has eased a bit and that running is still helping. Hope you got warmed up!
@juliet3455 - I miss @PoppetsMaster too - wish he would come back again. He did have an amazing number of just running shoes of all different brands, types and colors!

@Elise4270 - where is the picture of these new shoes? Have you been released to run again - did I miss that?
Nope. Not cleared to run. I'm not running- just stressing my cardiovascular system a bit, so when I DO get back to running, it'll be a little easier.

Totally skipped my run today. After yesterday's 5k PR, my legs were shredded. Tomorrow's long run might stretch to 1p miles, to make up for thr lost 4 miles today.....going to try for 8 for sure so I don't get too far off track from my goal.0

I spent so much at DSW this year I moved to premiere status.
I love DSW but many of mine were bought at Marshall's. They just opened a DSW by me. I have been resisting but I have a frequent shopper coupon burning a hole in my pocket..0 -
A little jaunt along the Riverbank Trails. They were having the S.Claus Parade through downtown tonight so the trails were empty - except for the 2 blocks around the downtown core - Families going in all directions. Once I got away from the area it was back to zero traffic, -5C and a strangely cold South Wind. Still a nice evening for a run.
I had planned on 14km but the Quads were starting to bark at me around km 8 so turned and cut it short at 10km. I blame the tenderness on Final Adult Swim Club in this session last night - one of the last " Fun Drills " was to Tread Water for 3 mins with increasing weights. 5lbs for 3 mins, 10lbs for 3 mins and topped out at 15 lbs for 3 mins - 7.5 lbs in each hand - held above the shoulder. Tried to do the 20lb set but just had no gas left in the tank. Note to self skip the 5 and start with the 10 next time we try this. Now where is that dang Foam Roller!

Today a slow and steady run along the bike path near my sister's house. It was 45 degrees so not bad, but the wind across the corn fields was a little tough.
And that brings me to my goal of 75 miles for the month! Maybe I can get closer to 90 for my final number.
My sister and I got reflexology massages today that were pretty amazing! Great work on the feet and calves, but also a pretty extensive back massage. Kind of intense but it felt really good. If I lived here I would definitely be checking them out again, it seemed perfect for running related soreness.
Need to catch up on everyone here. Hope you all have a good weekend!1 -

@Orphia - congrats on hitting 50 parkruns and smashing your PB again!
Went out for easy 5k today. Was 3°C, sunny and very light breeze so was nice running weather. The slight chill meant I went faster than planned easy pace, (close to HM pace). Not much to report - ever so slight twinge in right knee, but I think it's nothing a good stretch won't sort out. Nowhere near as tired as I have been last couple of days. Still in need of my planned foam rolling session later though, and think I may compliment that with a nice soak in the bath tonight - have got some Elemis muscle soak I'm looking forward to trying out.
2-Nov: 13.1k - 3 laps of hilly route.
4-Nov: 6.26k - Planned 11k easy, but cut short as very stiff/tired.
7-Nov: 11.25k long run.
9-Nov: 6k fast
12-Nov: 18k long run [Distance PR] Very wet.
14-Nov (AM): 5.1k easy. Wet and sluggish (no warm-up)
14-Nov (PM): 10k as 5k tempo + 5k intervals
16-Nov: 8.3k - 2 laps of hill circuit
19-Nov: 7.4k trail run at approx HM pace.
20-Nov: 11.5k - planned 19.5k long run but cut short due to tight left achilles.
23-Nov: 21.2k HM pacing practice [Distance PR]
24-Nov: 4.4k (30 mins) recovery run
25-Nov: 6.3k "tired" run
26-Nov: 5.3k easy (actually nearer HM pace than easy)1 -
@Orphia Congrats on a new PB and making it to 50 parkruns!
@Elise4270 Glad to see you beginning to get back to things, even if you haven't been officially cleared yet. Feels like it'll be really soon for you now.
Went for a gorgeous long run this morning. This new 'Saturday morning long-run including parkrun' routine is my new favourite thing, I look forward to it more than anything else in my diary. Helped that I finished right outside the village bakery so bought myself a coffee and a little treat. Also had some extra treats mid-run because today was our local parkrun's 250th event so there was cake and jam tarts and chocolates for the finishers. If only someone would always be there halfway through a long run with cake...
Anyway, I do have a stupid story to go along with this run that may amuse you all.
When I was running to parkrun, I was conscious of the time to make sure I got there for the start, so had the screen on my watch set to show the clock time instead of my pace like it usually does. I then forgot this while I was running parkrun, which I had decided to try and run at goal HM pace (which is 9:05). Because parkrun starts at 9:00am, my brain thought that what I was seeing was my pace instead of the clock time! So basically, as I was running, all I thought I could see was my pace dropping bit by bit even though I was pushing harder and harder to try and get up to, what I thought was, HM pace. This started off working well, because I was obviously running way slower and thought "THIS IS SO EASY!" but by 9:20am I was pretty devastated, convinced that I couldn't run this hard and maintain it so I was never going to get a sub-2hr HM in 3 weeks - all because I was convinced that, even going all out, I was only running 9:20 pace When I realised what I had done at 9:50 on the run home, I laughed so hard I had to stop at the side of the road to catch my breath MORON ALERT.
