WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR NOVEMBER 2016

The journey to weight loss and fitness is filled with challenges that come from all sides---pizza and fast food places on every corner and advertising on every TV channel, loving family members who bring candy and other unsuitable food treats, "the evil donut bringer" at work, and life situations that often result in stress and exhaustion. It helps to have a supportive and encouraging community to turn to every day.
That's what this thread is about. The name says "Women Ages 50+" but all women are welcome. Some of us have been posting on this thread for a long time and some have just started. It doesn't take long to feel like you've known us forever.
If you made any goals or resolutions for October, how did you do?
If you have any goals or resolutions for November, we'd love to hear about them.
Please sign your post with your name (or alias) and your general geographic location. This makes it easier for us to get to know each other.

Resolutions for October (with end of the month comments)
*follow the directions of the medical professionals for recovery from surgery (I did exactly what I was told)
*make daily use of my word for 2016-- "alacrity"....I will greet all experiences in my life with cheerful readiness (this reminded me to not be a grump about anything and to welcome all suggestions)
*knit three blankets for Project Linus (I thought I'd be sitting a lot more than I was so I finished one blanket and am part way through another)
Resolutions for November
*follow the directions of the medical professionals for recovery from surgery
*make daily use of my word for 2016-- "alacrity"....I will greet all experiences in my life with cheerful readiness
*knit another blanket for Project Linus

Thanks, Barbie, for moving us forward in so many ways. I'm so glad you are doing as well as you are post-surgery. You are such an inspiration to our group. I'm truly thankful for your gentle and caring spirit.

Hi Gals,
Love the idea of costumes fitting over / or vestments fitting over… we usually have a dry Halloween so if it is cold or wet it is a major ordeal…
Tere – LOVE the idea of the surprise wedding, it meant folks you cared about were there, but boiled it down to the important bits and not the hoopla !!! You are a beautiful bride.
Becca – you are the bomb – putting things in perspective – and thank YOU for your service, the families are as much in the service as the service men and women.
Sorry for the pity party yesterday, I’m much better today! Joyce I tend to stress about the holidays also, I stress as I hate to be alone, (except on Halloween, where I am happy to be home handing out candy) – Last year I found a place to volunteer for Thanksgiving, and I will do that again, although I have also been invited to dinner at a friends – 2 hr drive each way, but I’ll do it… may try to find someone to watch Levi on Thanksgiving evening so I can spend the night. Christmas is to far away for any of my group to figure out that it is coming..LOL.. much less plan anything. Last year worked out so I have to hope that this year will as well.
I worked in my camp garden today, I have a winter green growing it is called Mizuna, an Asian green that is purple, and raw tastes like a less bitter arugula - I find arugula to bitter for me, as the only green, ok in a mixed lettuce salad. I took out one of the two large garden beds of tomatoes and have a large crate of green tomatoes, I’ll do some green tomato relish I think.
It will be helpful to have the garden veggies all year round… stretch my budget a bit more, I have never planted a winter garden at home, so this has been a huge learning curve! One day at a time.
November Goals:
2 fun things a week
Read and report on a book
Log everyday to the best I can, over if need be.
11,000 + steps everyday
Work on water consumption -
Smiles.

Good Morning Ladies!
Thanks for all the congratulations. Really thanks for all of you who commented on how young we look. DH (67) has been an inspiration for me to be in the best shape I can for many years. Sometimes I forget how old we are and always laugh when we use our AARP card and senior discounts.
My goals for November are to workout at the gym at least 3 times a week and to release 10 pounds back into the atmosphere!
Thanksgiving is almost upon us and I am promising myself that I am not going to stress as dinner is at my house and we don't have any young people in town to lighten the work load. I am thankful for all the beautiful plastic ware available these days. It makes things a little easier. I make it a point to have plenty of those disposable food storage containers around and send left overs home with everyone.
Have a great day everyone!

Hi all!
Woke up this morning, chatted to DH in bed, and we've decided to put in an offer on the "doer upper." That isn't a definite commitment as we haven't sold ours, but we are firm in our decision. DH is going to have a chat with the agents while I am at yoga. The seller is flaky, so it isn't easy. This might be a saga.
Got a viewer fixed up for Friday. I will be in London, but that's fine.
Yoga this morning. Might get on the recumbent bike this afternoon to burn a few more calories.
Then it's hair trim. Then maybe W I. If I can be bothered. As we are moving I feel less motivated. It's a talk by a choclatiere, who is bringing her wares to sell. The Christmas party is to be delivered fish and chips. What is the matter with everyone!?!?
Katla - I'm feeling for you. Relatives can be such a p in the a. Just hang in there and smile. It will soon be over.
Mary, Carey - So sorry for your pain and misery. Throws your whole life out, doesn't it. (((HUGS)))
Well folks, bye for now. Will post photos from my phone later. We just LOVED going round with the grandchildren and the system of having a lighted pumpkin outside receptive houses worked well. Didn't have that in my kids' day. And when I was on duty as the donor the callers were so sweet and polite. I had to encourage them to take more than one. Wasn't like that in London!!! Graberoo city!
Much love to all and thanks again to the wonderful Barbie, who is recovering from her operation with grace and dignity.

Thank you, Barbie - for once again starting us off right into a new month. Ditto what JanetR said - you are a continuing inspiration to me... more than you know.
Kim - if it weren't for pity parties, I wouldn't go to parties at all. We all have 'em, Lord knows I do.
Tere - caught your wedding pic on October's thread, and it was beautiful... LOVE the story. Welcome back.
Goal for October - "be lighter" Failed miserably. Lost/gained cycle balanced in the end, but did not lead to a loss.
Goal for November - "be lighter" than I am at the beginning, physically, mentally, spiritually.
I talked to my boss yesterday... and it went better than I probably had any right to expect. She has yet to talk to the owner/CEO, but is already interviewing today for a part-time reporter who can take on the city/county beat, because those not only take my writing/editing time, but three to four hours of physical time apiece--would include two city meetings, two county meetings, hospital board meeting, school board meeting, water board meeting and water district. That's forty hours/one full week of my month just attending them, much less writing about them. Plus half are evening meetings which makes it even worse.
If those are taken care of, I have a fair shot of dropping to part-time, 15 to 18 hours a week. She says she thinks she can present it to the owner in ways that the owner will sign on for it. If the interviewee has the potential to be a good editor, I'd be happy to grow her into my spot as we go along. The boss even asked if I'd sit in on the interview. Would love to start it quickly... but we'll just have to see how it all goes.
And... the final sale at the warehouse will be Saturday, and I'm better prepared for that than I have been for any of them. That means early mornings, other than press day, I can reserve for writing this week, and start working out again starting next week.
Taking my paperwork to the VA this morning. Long story short, I've received a small check from the VA since I got out of the Air Force, where I blew out my left knee jumping off a ton-and-a-half truck on the flight line. Not exactly a war wound, but the money has bought a can of beans or two over the years. I've never gone to a VA hospital for care, for a lot of reasons, but I've usually had some form of health insurance.
Our current "you-better-not-get-sick" health insurance being what it is, I'm finally starting the process of entering the VA system, to see if they can get me to see a doctor at a reasonable price. They have a satellite clinic here in Fort Stockton, open just one day a week.
The exhaustion continues, along with the insomnia, and I'm hoping there's just a vitamin imbalance. If I can get my blood tests through them, I might be able to see what I'm missing, and get my supplements in order again. I take a multi-vitamin, SlowFE iron and sublingual B-12 every single day, faithfully, but don't feel myself and haven't for some time. Fingers crossed the VA will get me into their system and at least get my blood tests done without it costing an arm and a leg.
Mary - saw your post. I've busted a collarbone, and the pain is horrendous. If that's how it feels to you, you have my utmost sympathy. Hope your doc can see you without a high premium and you can get some relief.
Off to the races, kids,
Love y'all!

morning ladies~
well we had all the little ones out early for trick or treating and then I turned out the lights, as i was up at 2 am yesterday. Tracy didnt stop with Tal.. even when my kids were little I would get them dressed early and take them to both grandparents and to Uncle Wells house and then go out trick or treating..with Tracy's work schedule there was no time and they went over to Kyles brothers house to trick or treat.. and I am gonna bet that they wont be coming to Thanksgiving either, even though I have invited them.... Tracy hates Tom and makes it very evident .. so it makes it very hard on me and she doesn't care about my feeling either..
Oh Well.... working 9-6 today , tomorrow I work 1-6 and will try and get some of the leaves picked up here in the yard.. my day off will be rainy so will try and get those leaves up first..
I am having a pity party for myself..Tracy splashes pictures of trick or treating, and where do they stop first? the other grandma's house with the other grandkids.... everything is always done with that family and not much done with mine... grrrrr ok rant over..2 -
Happy November, ''tis the season to be grateful!
My November goals:
•count blessings along with calories in and out
•continue to focus on what I have, not shopping or eating out
•embrace our travels this month-2 trips- in one month, so I've got to be mindful about my anxiety and work through it
•be lighter this month, work this program so it works for me!
I've got to look back at October goals and compare, I know I am one pound added rather than lost, but other goals surrounding frugality and meal planning went pretty well. So I will continue on that program of tracking spending as well as I track food and exercise!
I am happy to have a supportive group to share the ups and downs of this time of year. NYKAREN3 -
Good morning ladies! Happy Tuesday! I read yesterday, but didn't have time to post.
Tere- glad to meet you and what a wonderful way to get married! You look beautiful!
Joyce-Definitely delegate tree responsibilities. Maybe some one has an extra artificial pre-lit tree they can bring and set up in the corner. Maybe set up a "ornament craft" table so that each family or family member who wants to, may make an ornament, hang it on the tree, then take it home when they go as a "keepsake". We do a craft table at almost every family gathering. It keeps kids busy for a while, and gives each family the chance to make a keepsake ornament or button (we use those button machines for our fourth of july craft). I bet your daughter and her girls would love to surf the internet and find some easy/quick ornaments to make and set up the table! Fun stuff!
Re- You may call yourself or your "bad self" the PUffy Princess; but you are doing amazingly well on the weight loss challenge you are on! So proud of you! Keep up the great work!
Heather- I am glad you had fun Halloween-ing with your grandkids. I don't know if I am happy or sad when some of our American celebrations invade other countries. America tends to turn holidays into materialistic/over indulgent celebrations. I love to watch the kids "enjoy", but there are times when it is just TOO much.
Well, never enough hours in the day/morning. Kids have arrived and I need to get busy. Probably won't be able to hop on later; have to look over DD's baby shower registry and make suggestions on what she probably won't use and what she didn't think to add. Her BF and I are throwing a shower for her in Jan. and we are flying her up for a weekend. Her hubby and pup are staying behind. Oh, we found out our pi-baby is a boy! She went in for the gender ultrasound and they were worried they wouldn't be able to tell, as he seemed to be running a marathon at the time, then pi-baby, very kindly decided to rest, and plunked his bottom down facing the ultrasound device, so they got a nice shot of his little legs in sitting position with the ummm...little stem...showing in the middle. Kind of like if you stuck your baby boy on the xerox machine in sitting position. I guess the technician laughed and said, "typical male behavior already. Acting very proud of that little thing!"
Anyway, love and best wishes for a happy Tuesday to all!
Holy cow! Just realized it's November (almost posted in October), I will have to read the November posts and jump on tomorrow morning if I can't tonight to post my November goals. Happy November!2 -

Morning ladies. I made it here on the first page. Miracles never cease!
November goals:- Continued improvement on my shoulder rehab
- Get back to consistent walking (since running has been declared a no-no)
- Lose a pound? A dream but that would be nice
- Reduce my consumption of diet soda by half. This one will be hard for me. Addicted.
- Get my Christmas shopping done before Thanksgiving (uh... another dream)
Had my one month check-up with the Dr. after my surgery. He was amazed and from the look on his face I truly believe he was. Said he'd never had a patient do so well after surgery. My mobility is back to normal range and I'm just needing to gain back my strength. Of course there is a lot of work to do because I can't move my arm under it's own power very much but I'm down to taking a pain pill maybe one night a week to help sleep so I've got the pain under control. He also told me I could get a massage again! I just have to tell them to not manipulate my shoulder. Whoo hoo! I can feel those magic fingers already.

November Greetings, Lovely Ladies!
I have been reading and praying for those of you who are facing difficulties health and otherwise and rejoicing with those who share happy news. I have also appreciated all of the frugal tips; my dh has been out of work since late July, so we have been trying to pinch pennies and stretch dollars as much as we can. We have managed thus far, but if he he doesn't get a job this month we won't be able to keep up with the bills. Prayers appreciated if you are so inclined.
Last night was fun! Several years ago we began a tradition of sitting out at the end of our driveway, handing out hotdogs and water as well as candy. We missed one year when halloween was on a Friday, and my son had a football game. The following year we had people say, "Oh, good, you're back; we were afraid you had moved!" I spent the weekend helping my daughter with last minute costumes for her and her, my sil, and grandson; they were Barney, Betty, and Bamm-Bamm, very cute! I will post a picture if i can figure out how to do it.
My biggest accomplishment on my October goals was my daily walks. I only missed 4 mornings, when i was sick, and only 3 walks were less than a mile. I walked a total of 57.18 miles (my goal was 50) and averaged 1.97 miles per walk. My goal this month is to walk 60, but i am hoping i get closer to 75. I also kept up with food-logging, and stayed within my calorie budget on all but a few days.
Progress so far:- Starting weight: 220 pounds
- 30 August: 210.0
- 30 September: 202.4
- 30 October: 194.8
November Goals:- continue to walk every day
- walk at least 60 miles by end of month
- body weight workout 2-3 times per week
- belly dance workout 2-3 times per week
- continue to log food and stay within calories
- drink 80 ounces of water each day
- eat more vegetables
- post here

Barbie Thanks again for continuing the thread.
Heather what a darling costume for Bea. Hope you get the house.
Lisa you have so much on your plate I can understand why sleeping can be a problem.
Goals:
Still continuing the goal of responding appropriately when others lack tack.
Overall I eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. I still need to watch how much I eat.
My triggers are overeating at a buffet. You would think I would be so full I would want anything the rest o the day. The opposite happens for me I want to just keep on eating. No more buffets!
My other triggers are anxiety and fatigue. I want to work on other ways to alleviate these triggers other than with food.

Carol - thanks, I'm borrowing your goal for November. I would be losing ALOT with all the activity I've been doing if I didn't start snacking in the late evening. I need to just go to bed at that time. I have lost 2-3 lbs which is great. I have no scale in the motor home so weighing on what ever scale I can find might not be too accurate. More importantly, I feel bettet and my clothes are more comfortable again, so I'll take it.
Love you ladies.

Happy November lovely ladies! I feel like a recorder, because every month I hop on here at the beginning of the month and post my goals for the month, I read everyone's posts and realize I didn't keep up enough to know what's going on with everyone and promise to do better! UGH.
I hope everyone is doing well.
Heather, I LOVE the pictures you posted. Your little Halloweeners are adorable! I also love the house you are looking at purchasing. It looks so charming and inviting. Good luck! It reminds me a lot of the house my grandmother lived in and I have such wonderful memories of that house.
After reading the posts for November so far, it looks like I've missed some tips on cutting back and stretching dollars. I think I will keep October's thread starred and try to go back and read it a little at a time.
I've been home over a week now with pneumonia. So the good news is that I've lost a few pounds but the bad news is that I had to get sick to do it. I started a weight loss program which my daughter is the regional manager for, a few weeks ago. It is basically cutting the sugar out of my diet and focusing on proteins, vegetables and healthy whole foods. I'm doing pretty well on it actually. This is the very first Halloween in all 56 years of my life that I did not eat even one piece of candy! I'm calling that a WIN in my book. I love me some chocolate! LOL
My October goals were:
1. Weigh less at the end of the month (YES!)
2. Drink half my weight in water daily (Did pretty well with this)
3. Cut out the foods testing positive on my Food Sensitivity test (YES)
4. Sugar below 29g per day (YES)
5. Meal plan and do food prep on the weekends for the week (eh...not so great...)
6. Activity at least 3 times a week (started out okay but then dropped off. getting sick did not help)
7. Meditate every night before bed for better sleep (Listened to audio meditations every night for sleep)
8. Enjoy each day and be grateful for what is… (YES)
Wow! Looking back, I think this is the best I've ever done meeting goals! That actually put a smile on my face today, and trust me, with this cough I haven't much felt like smiling!
I love the goal someone above wrote about about getting holiday shopping done before Thanksgiving! I would LOVE to meet that goal also. Christmas turns into such a stressful time for me every single year and it shouldn't be a stressful time. I do agree that materialism is a big part of holidays now. We have 17 grandchildren and 1 great grandson, with twin great grandsons on the way in March and it is ridiculous trying to get them all Christmas presents! My husband wants me to stop buying for them, but I just can't get myself to do it. I love their faces when they walk in the door with such excitement. It is my favorite but most stressful time of year. I have to find a way to cut back this year but have not figured out how I will do that yet.
I'm happy to see so many familiar names and I hope you all have a wonderful day! I'll try to check in and get caught up later and throughout the week...I feel like a "bad friend".

*If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got! Time for a change…*
November Goals:
1. Weigh less at the end of the month
2. Drink half my weight in water daily
3. Cut out the foods testing positive on my Food Sensitivity test
4. Continue following the Medi Weightloss plan
5. Meal plan and do food prep on the weekends for the week
6. Activity at least 3 times a week
7. Have half my Christmas shopping done by the end of the month
8. Make all the adult couples homemade gifts (Pinterest ideas for pot holders, kitchen towels, baskets, etc.)

I am new here, in a manner of speaking. I was active on another site a few years ago, and while I still visit it seems to have changed quite a bit. I used to log on MFP when I had a Fitbit, so I guess I am simply returning. My short story is this: Gained lots of weight when I quit smoking & entered menopause 10 years ago, counted calories and lost a lot, drifted and stopped counting calories, ate a lot during emotional stress, and gained most of what I had lost. This year has been especially difficult: My Mother died a year ago, I lost my job of 20 years (it was an ugly episode), I've gone on meds for anxiety & depression (they help), and I couldn't make it without my Dad's support. I have three interviews coming within the week, and my nerves are shot.
On the plus side, I have lost >20 pounds since July. I'm increasing the exertion of my cardio, though I've cut it to three times per week to limit travel expenses, and I'm eating more healthy foods.
Some goals for November:- Strength training twice a week
- No snacking after 7:00 PM
- Lose five pounds by November 30th
I have appreciated the support of people from other boards in the past, and I look forward to becoming aquanited with you all here.

@lwr731 Welcome! You've come to a great place. This group is so inviting and helpful. I love it. I'm not nearly as active on it as I wish I were and I'm working on that...(less Pinterest and more MFP).
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. I want to wish you good luck with the 3 interviews this week. Hopefully, one of them will be perfect for you! That is stressful and it sounds like you have had enough of it lately!
Congratulations on your 20 lb weight loss!2 -
Juanita, what a nice tradition my although in a lot of neighborhoods parents would be leary of their child accepting a hot dog from a stranger. My daughter lives in a neighborhood where they could do something like that. Sounds like fun. When my kids were little there was a family down the street that made sure their child gave candy to us before they took candy from us.
Bea, love the kids, all of them are so cute. Is that house a semidetached? Looks good.

Well October was not as gang busters as I had hoped. I lost only 1lb last month. I ran the reports tab to see if I had any clue as to why things did not progress as I had hoped.
I saw that over the last 3 months my weight loss has slowed a little each month. That I have longer periods of 'steady' weight before I drop anything. Eating has been steady, in fact I have gotten pretty good about not eating over my calorie count, with only a minor slip here and there. I usually do not eat back all my exercise calories, at 1300 calories a day I can not go down.
My exercise minutes actually went up in October compared to September. Nice to see but only adds to my confusion. With the weather/season turning I will return to my elliptical in the basement where I can watch the wind and cold and snow through the sliding glass door while I exercise rather than partake in it.
Any suggestions as to why I now have some pretty stubborn pounds that don't want to leave? I'm doing everything (diet, logging, exercise) even better than I did when I was losing 3-4 lbs a month. I can't claim 'puffy' Princess issues as that left the building so many decades ago.
My friends have noticed my weight loss and I have bought new jeans as my older pairs I kept losing if I didn't wear a belt to keep them up. All that said, I am not at the end of my journey yet.
I look to the wise ones on this thread for suggestions or explanations for my slowing weight loss.

Joyce, the first year we did it, we cooked about 50 and most people said "no, thank you" to the hot dogs but "yes, please" to the water bottles until the end of the evening (when i guess hunger took over) and we gave away about half of them. The second year people remembered us (and since nobody had died ) we gave away most of them. The third year we ran out, and we have been doing twice as many ever since. We usually give away between 75 & 100. Teenagers often bring their friends and sheepishly come back for seconds!
Heather, beautiful littles! Best of luck with the house.
Lisa, WELCOME! This is a wonderful little cyber neighbourhood!1 -

Where do I start? My name is Cheryl, I am new to this group. I was on mfp before and gradually I lost momentum and well.....I'm back. I have been struggling with ill health for a number of years, spent a month in the hospital and after going through every test known to man that my drs could think of, and still they said, they could not figure out what was wrong. So I decided to go the naturall route to regain my health and it is working!
I feel like I am getting my life back!
November goals:
get healthier by:
eating things that are good for me.
drinking about 7 more cups of water than I usually do. (why is it so difficult to drink water?)
workout at the gym 3 times a week doing cardio and weights
weigh less at the end of the month
be stronger at the end of the month
have more endurance, you guessed it, at the end of the month
fill out my food diary every day and remember to hit that little button to complete the day.
speaking of working out at the gym. I need to get my shoes on and go now. I am a morning person, if I don't go now, I won't be going. The point of making a goal and writing it down for all to see, is to follow through and DO IT!! So here I go.....
Have a wonderful day everyone
