Are we who we are because that's what we think people want us to be or are we who we are because that's truly who we are? And how can we tell the difference? They say Just be you. But who am I really and do I want to be that person or somebody different?

    Yes.

I think it's a bit of everything. I think a large part of my life I was more in the first category - wanting to make everyone happy, so shaping my emotions, reactions, behaviours in terms of other people's expectations of me. I hate to say it, but if I'm honest, I still do to a large extent.

But who we are is how we behave - so regardless of whether someone else molded our behaviours, or whether they were self designed, it is still who we are. Besides, I don't think anyone is ever going to be entirely self made. External influences are always present.

How we can tell the difference, in my opinion, is probably best measured by our level of inner peace. Are you happy with who you seem to be? Does it feel like it matches who you think you are? Or do you feel like no one knows the real you? If the latter, then MFP is a great way to socially experiment. Be the person you want to be. Say the things you want to say, befriend the people you want to know better. It really helped me realize that the person I wanted to be was actually loved (and maybe more than the person I felt I should be). Anonymity can sometimes help you learn how to be real, because the risk isn't as great. (Internet person rejection doesn't hurt as much as in-person rejection... usually)

Keep in mind that (unless we're dead, or incredibly narcissistic), most people want to change to some extent. We continue to grow and develop our whole lives - and that's a good thing. We don't know everything now, so as we learn, we shift and adapt. (That is something I took from the book "The subtle art of not giving a *kitten*").

Anyhoo... thanks for making me think. Sorry if I thought too much out loud. lol

Male rats and male horses are the only male mammals that don't have nipples. Well, those and my Uncle Darryl after he found roadkill that wasn't quite dead.
