December 2016 Running Challenge

Got my kitten (why wait for the censor?) out of bed this am and went for a run. Misjudged the clothing. Last week it was minus 5 degrees C, today plus 13. Not really the same clothing for each. Great to get out, even if down a cold dark alley with only a head torch for company (hey, I'm not dead yet!)
In another strange bit of news, my regular walking buddy posted that she'd run 100m. And when I posted about c25k she actually seemed interested.
What have I done? Have I pulled her into the dark side? Is she discovering 'running'?

I am a wimp. I didn't want to run outside today, even though I had time to. It was 20F and very windy and I just wimped out and went to the gym instead.
I had some dental work done earlier today (I took the day off from work, hence the time during the day to run) and it is now almost 7 pm and my mouth is still hurting. Luckily mouth pain doesn't interfere with running. So I did 5.3 miles and some good stretching afterwards and now I need some Tylenol for my mouth.2 -

Went to a different running group tonight. I did NOT want to go out because it was cold and there were flurries. But dragged myself out and was glad, as always, to be done. It was cold out there and the wind was icy, but the snow held off. We did intervals of 5 min, 7 min, and 4 min hard, with 3 min between and then sprints.
Tomorrow should be a rest day. I think I'll try to do some yoga, but if it's not snowing too much yet I might be tempted to get out there.3 -
All day long the little devil-in-running-shoes on my shoulder has been whispering "Just 1 little mile won't hurt."0

Sorry to all who are dealing with injuries and spills. May your recovery be quick!
Thanks @ddmom0811 and @louubelle16 for the book talk. Those sound perfect for this time of year.
@Elise4270. Sorry you still haven't been cleared to run AND for a double whammy they are making you go back to work. Blech.
I went for blood work today and it was bloody cold. The coldest here I can remember (-11 C). (Sneer away, snowland people. I grew up in Alberta with regular stretches of -40 C and cannot believe how whiny I am either.) I had to walk home because my son had a final exam (college) and talked me into letting him take the car. I was bundled up like the Pillsbury Dough Boy, and they drained me of blood after fasting for 14 hours, so my plan to run turned into a walk after my I felt dizzy thirty seconds in. I'm counting it towards my miles because, well, I would have rather been running.
12/08: 2.69 miles

I've already decided 5 times (while sitting down) that I jumped the gun and I could at least run a little more in December although not keeping the streak going. Then I stand up and change my mind again. I'm trying to focus on positives. This is the first year I ran all 12 months! I ran 604 miles which is an average of 50 per month. Considering I probably ran 100 miles in 2015, that's a 600% increase! LOL
In a few days, my knee (and the left shin, let's not leave that out) will probably feel tons better and the urge to run will be strong. I'm hoping that all the rushing to prepare for a week before Christmas medical trip will keep me occupied.3 -
Welcome to @MrsLeonard2016 and @sdphil90! You're right - starting today is MUCH better than starting tomorrow (or later!).

It's not as much now but they still top at 6% depending on what you do, can't recall the exact calculation. You can always find $10 in your budget to put away.
Actually - I was shocked a week or so ago when I read an article that said that people who have about the amount I have (which I thought was paltry) are among the top 5% of 401K balances. Or something like that. I'm kinda not scared about the possibility of having a real retirement. Hmm.

@RunRachelleRun -11? Fasted? You are one tough cookie!
@kristinegift @9voice9 @skippygirlsmom Definitely great financial advice. I didn't get the option to participate in the 401k until 35. (But then i was in college until I was 34). Then of course, I didn't take advantage of the full match. Definitely should have made better choices! DH made sure I changed it- said we'd adjust to the decrease in pay.1 -

17 of 80 miles; 2 of 7 XT sessions.
Four on the TM at the gym, with middle 2 at faster pace (9:00 ranging down to 8:30). It was ok. What can you say about another TM run? It's nice to see a break from the cold and wind in the forecast for Saturday, but looking ahead to next week gives me shivers!
Happy running, all!

Which extension? Did you see that IUPUFW beat Indiana couple weekends ago? I'm thinking you maybe taking classes at the Chicago extension?
I did not see that - but Nice! I went to the Calumet extension in Hammond. I grew up in Chicago, but we moved to Hammond while I was in high school. You were in Lafayette, I assume?

On the mitten/glove topic, I get Reynaud's and I use mitten/gloves and I put chemical handwarmers inside:
The chemical handwarmers are less than $2 a pair and you can get them in the picnic section of the supermarket, or in pharmacies. You just open the pack, shake, and they heat up in minutes, then last about 10 hours. They're brilliant!
I give them to the parkrun volunteers when I'm Run Director on cold days, and they've been a hit.
They also make toe warmers!

Went out for 12.5k easy, and not much to report - pace was good and pretty consistent for me (except when I deliberately picked up the pace). It was 12C out when I started and I was actually grateful on the headwind/crosswind sections for a chance to cool down. The wind picked up as I ran which brought the temperature down a degree or two which made all the difference and the last half of the run was a lot more comfortable. At least I've found my cutoff for my thin gloves - 12C is too warm for them, but at a windy 10C I don't need them but do appreciate them.

Hey all!
This thread keeps me going to run further and longer each week. Today I will try my leg in a test run although I feel my quad a bit meh, let's hope it will warm-up alright, to ease the small pain I feel and add some kms. I am so pleased to meet you all, you are an inspiration to me!

@skippygirlsmom That's the plan -- after I put enough away into an emergency fund. If I get any kind of end of year bonus (unlikely since I started in August) that will probably go toward that fund. I should be putting money into my 401k by early next year, but I've got some other things to handle first. Looking ahead 1-2 months my budget is going to be extreeeeemely tight. (Reason #1 I'm now looking to start a weekend job in January!)
@9voice9 & @Elise4270 Glad you are in agreement as well! Retirement seems a lifetime away but it'll be nice to have some money for it.
And if anyone thinks that my dad is not being Personal Finance Dad Extraordinaire, you are mistaken. He's been giving me tons of advice in prioritizing my savings (just in case fund > 401k for now but 401k as soon as possible; loans, loans, loans!) and has been super helpful this week as I get my 2017 money plans in order. Now as long as I STICK TO THE BUDGET... all will be well!3 -
@kristinegift I know it's not the way you are suppose to do it, but we're never any good at saving the 10k we need for emergencies. It's all DH's fault I can borrow against my 401k and pay it in installments right out of my check if I have too. I have bits tucked away in CDs he doesn't know about.
You'll do fine to have a plan!1 -

Nominal mileage goal: 100 miles
Real goal, get into the swing of Marathon training, and get used to doing 3 days a week of some strength/core while running 35+ MPW
Today's notes: another 5 boring miles on the treadmill. Average pace was 10:37, which was only 3sec/mile off my assigned pace....treadmills are good for something I guess. Another nice thing, I really am getting good cardio zone HR during these runs, keeping my HR in the mid 140's instead of the mid 150's I ave it while running outside, this is probably due to pace control, and no hills, but it is nice to see that the TM is good for something.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday are treadmill days because of convenience, since I end up doing core or weight work on those days, its easier to run at the gym and then go straight to the other half of the workout without having to change clothes.
Speaking of the other half of the workout. After today's run the assignment was:
40 mountain climbers
20 bicep curls
40 squats
20 flys
40 jumping jacks
20 overhead press
I used 10# dumbells for the flys and press, since I know I'm way weaker on upper body than I should be.0 -
I'm in! I'll commit to 35 miles - did 2.33 miles in my 30min lunch break today so just over 32 miles to go!7

My ankle was sore and swollen last night. It has been tight for a day or two now. I iced it before bed but it was still a bit tender and puffy this morning so I decided not to run today. I may even skip my walks to give it a thorough rest - though I do have some shopping to do this afternoon. Bummer.
Have a fabulous rest of the day everyone!

@7lenny7 and @BeeerRunner Well done in getting out in the cold. Especially the Texan running in the cooler temps of Chicago.
@Orphia Great use of the Hand Warmers, especially that you suffer from Reynaud's.
I use them for ski trips, might have to get some for Saturdays planned 15km on the snow covered Bush Trails. Promises to be an Epic Adventure.2 -
Tomorrow I have yet another new (to me) distance. 18 miles. I get so nervous before new distances. I hit my 20 on Christmas eve. This is really happening, isn't it? I seriously love these threads. It helps keep my motivation up!8
