I have a bad habit that when I quit running I quit everything. Haven't walked, stretched, rolled, "pilatesed" Nada! I need to do this stuff.
@7lenny7 thanks! It's been a long 4 months around here.....1 -
@lissadecker good run, and smart choice cutting it short. Glad you braved the cold too!
@katharmonic good job dragging yourself out of bed for your run. For me that's almost always half the battle
@OSUbuckeye906 nice Run!
@greenolivetree I know that feeling all too well. Here's to you getting out of "the funk" soon!
Looks like a bunch of us braved the cold this morning!0 -
Had my first snow run today. Wore some rubber traction things over my shoes (similar to yak tracks?) that my husband got from his work as a postie and they worked perfect. We're on day two of snow and more is expected, so I might get to do it again. Since no one here owns a shovel, except for the one neighbour I stopped to chat with, the sidewalks on the main roads were the worst. Complete slush probably from the salt being splashed up. I was very slow and didn't get far, but ran by effort and it turned out to be exactly in my desired zone.
12/10: 1.66 miles

@RunRachelRunnn nice snow run1

Ok. Everything went well, felt a minor pain in my quad but nothing serious. Interval train today, 10 min warm-up @5:50/km followed by 6x 2min @4:25/km, then 10 min cool-down @6:04/km. Feels great. @lissadecker @7lenny7 tnx for the support!!

Ended up taking 2 ray days as I was a bit under the weather Thursday and did a long ride yesterday. Still, the weather was great this AM so ended up going for a nice cool 12 mile run with some faster miles at the end. Going to do another long one tomorrow as I'm feeling better.
12/2 - 7 miles
12/3 - 5 miles
12/4 - 4 miles (warmup + 5K race)
12/6 - 7 miles

Total: 39 miles
Goal: 180 miles
Remaining: 153 miles

@Stoshew71 - Looks like the weather wasn't cooperating for today. If you want to give a late January Marathon a shot, welcome to bring the family/crash at my place on the beach in January if you want to give the Clearwater Distance Classic marathon a try (as allegiant & southwest have cheap flights into tpa/Clearwater-PIE).
@patrikc333 - not really sure there is an equivalent distance for running and cycling, as I can go out for a 5 hour century ride at 20mph/135 heart rate and ride again the next day, whereas if I run 20 miles in 3 hours at the same 135bpm heart rate, I'll be destroyed for a few days. I'd just stick with equivalent times and intensities for now, and if you want to build up speed, just go harder (either via intervals, or 30 min time trials) every 3rd day.0 -
12/2: .5; chest/arms
12/3: 10
12/4: .5; back/shoulders/core
12/7: 2
12/8: 4
12/10: 10
27 of 80 miles; 2 of 7 XT sessions.
Of all the ten mile runs I've done, this was the most circuitous. Or, perhaps, the most squareitous(?). I ran with friends inside a giant dome covering a full size soccer field and running/walking path. I've never been there before, but two of my friends were running 18 in prep for an indoor marathon and so really wanted to train there (and avoid the 4F temps outside). It was fun, and much better than I imagined/dreaded. Having running buddies makes all the difference!
5.25 laps = one mile, on a sports turf surface. It felt like 45-50 inside the dome. I was in tights because I thought it would be colder, but if I do this again I'll run in shorts. That's me in the black long sleeve in the group selfie.
Happy running, all!

Update: 14/50 miles complete
20 days left in the month after today. Is everyone on pace for their goal?3 -
10k PR today... 1:06:41!
It was about 23F and I was in full winter gear. Even the ugly yellow vest. You can definitely see me coming in that thing! My winter tights were good and warm. No cold butt, yay. I did get a touch of urticaria on my legs, though. Hate that.
No snow yet, but I tried out the trail shoes anyway. They felt a bit stiff at first, but I liked the way they felt when I was actually running in them. They felt very stable.
Snow's supposed to start in the next couple hours. We're expecting up to 10 inches. Woot woot.8 -
@Strandbergm looks like you're on good track to make your goal. Looking like I'll make mine too
@RespectTheKitty 23F, that sounds nice. Great run!0 -
@greenolivetree My first bit of violin practice. I'm standing next to the bed, my cat is standing hind legs on the bed trying to figure out the E string noise. (Yes it's in tune ). Sorry for the mess (dh is part rat- nest in the bed), I never fix my hair, so it is what it is...
She wasn't keen on it at all. Not at all. None. Nada.
No running here. I'm really wanting to get out and try a bit. The weather is perfect. 44f today. I have a crick in my neck and that's been my excuse to do nothing the last 3 days
I think the caption is "Are you killing something?"6 -
@elise4270 I love this picture!!!
No running for me today, I spent the day volunteering at the Rocket City Marathon.5 -
@skippygirlsmom that sounds like a great way to spend the day!0
-
Was contemplating a longer run today, but decided to sleep in instead. So far, the month is going pretty well so far and I'm just over 10 miles into my 35 mile goal with about 1/3 of the month over. Since I missed today, I'll head out tomorrow for a mid-length run (5-7 miles, I think) on perhaps a different trail than either of my usuals.1

@MNlittlefinn it was, got there at 6:15, got to selfie with @stoshew71 ha ha and watch the race start, when hand out medals to the kids marathoners, then medals to the big "kids". The kids marathon is awesome, they start in September and have until this race to run 26.2 miles. The last mile is run to the finish line during this marathon, I think 200 kids finished it this year, from like 4 to 14 years old.

18 miles today.
Total 33ish/100
I struggled the last 3 miles, didn't have the energy. I ran like three-fourths and walked a quarter of each mile. I think it was because I only had Gatorade at mile 15 and decided with 3 miles left I didn't need the extra Gu I brought along. Magically my 18 miles ended right at Starbucks so I got myself a peppermint mocha and walked home.5 -
@RunsOnEspresso nice run! Ending at Starbucks sounds like a perfect end to your run.2

12/1: 6 miles with Pacers crew +lifting
12/2: 2 miles
12/3: 8 miles with the Saturday crew
12/4: 5.3 miles on trails +lifting
12/5: 6 miles
12/6: 2 miles + lifting
12/7: 6 miles
12/8: 6 miles
12/9: 1 mile
12/10: 13.1 miles
Social gathering, for-fun (and for charity) HM today. There were a slew of options as it was a bunch of loops from our group leader's house. There was a 5k, then another 5k, then a ~7 mile loop to make 13.1 miles. Then others who wanted to go on did a 9ish loop, then another 4 to get to 26.2 and then a few brave souls went to 50k. The rest of us who were not running for a zillion miles sat around a little bonfire and ate potluck food and chatted. It was pretty great
Also: No car for me (yet) today. The dealership -- who, to be fair, has the lowest prices in the region online already -- were not even trying to negotiate a price with me. I was like, "Look, I wanna buy a car from you. But at [asking minus $500]." And they were like, "And we want to sell you a car. But we can't budge from [asking price.]" So I said, "Ok. Call me Monday if you change your mind. I'm all in if you can move the price." Though to be fair, the price AS IS is more affordable than I budgeted for and is a really good deal. But if I can get them to come down even a bit, it'll be a win for me. If not, I might cave midweek. Who knows?
Winter/Spring 2017 Races:

12/9 – 3.80 course preview
12/10 – 5.01 USATF Club Nationals Masters 8K
December total to date – 50.83
Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Finish transition to healthy running. Use Club Nationals as a learning experience on managing air travel to a race. Build a base toward Boston training. Avoid re-injury
Today's notes – It was 34º F (1º C) when I walked to McDonald's for breakfast this morning. Met my ride on the way back, walked around some with him, got to the course in time to see the start of the women's masters 6K and cheer some teammates.
There was frost on the grass when we arrived. It was mostly melted off by the time the Men's Masters 8K started at 8:45. I ran in shorts and a tee with the team singlet over the tee, and was glad to have my gloves with me. In Florida, yet. No doubt the natives were really suffering.
I had never run a cross country race. Some things are different from road races. They gave us two chips to lace to our shoes, and we had to turn in the chips afterwards or face a fee. (I forget how much, but I made sure to avoid the stupid tax.) Had a runner number to pin to the front of the singlet, and an age category number to pin to the back:
My roommate explained that this is so the people behind me know which son-of-a-*kitten* they're trying to catch and pass.
I ran about 3 miles pretty much as planned, and found I didn't have the stamina that I had before injury. I ran enough at a 7:30 pace to recover that mile 4 came out slower. Garmin mile splits were 6:26, 6:42, 6:43, 6:59, and 6:44. At the third loop, peaking the hill they call "the wall," I was pretty much done. If the finish hadn't been downhill, I wouldn't have had a finish line sprint left in me.
My goal was to finish in about 33 minutes. My actual time was 33:38, close enough for coming off injury and having sub-par stamina. The recovering Achilles scared me a bit after the finish line, but with appropriate stretching and walking around, it recovered OK. So I achieved the most important race goal, which was to avoid setting myself back on the recovery front.
Then there was an extended period of cognitive dissonance as many teammates told me I ran a great race, while I knew I didn't run as fast a race as I could have if I had been totally healthy. However, I am happy that I ran the race I needed to run.
About the 4th time a club cheering session called out, "fourth GVH" what they were saying registered. 3 of my 60+ masters teammates finished ahead of me, and I was 4th of the 11 men we entered in the race. I was 23rd of 96 overall, and the fastest on the GVH B team. After the race, Coach told me I belonged on the A team. Since the 3 scoring A team members ran faster than me, and that was good enough for the team championship, I didn't totally understand the logic of that. I probably belong on the A team when I'm healthy, but when teams had to be declared my injury status was in question. But team scoring for cross country is complex, and I don't understand the subtle points.
My flight home leaves at 6:30 PM tomorrow, and it will be past midnight when I walk in my front door. You'd think I have plenty of time to get one more Florida run in tomorrow morning, but I'll see how I feel. If I need to sleep late, the noon checkout will force me to cancel tomorrow's run due to insufficient time to run, shower, pack, and check out. If I wake early, I'll get something in.
Now I need to get home, sleep a couple times, and think about how I feel about traveling to team events and running cross country. If I'm going to become a cross country runner, I'll need to buy some spikes. I think I could have shaved a few seconds off today's time with proper cross country footwear.
Initial thoughts: I never saw so many fast 60 year olds in my life. One of our 70+ runners tells me that I won't finish as far forward, percentage wise, in cross country because recreational runners don't run cross country. I'll need to process that and figure out how to think about being closer to the middle of a more competitive field. I'm not sure I have the competitive instinct needed for good cross country racing. Now people are asking me if I'm going to run the national cross country championships in Bend, Oregon on February 4. I'm not ready to make that decision today. By all accounts, it's a pain to travel to and from Bend.

@ddmom0811 I should have done something similar. Instead I talked to people in person which is not ideal. However the only prices lower that I can find for a similar style but MORE mileage are for cars on, say, Car Fax with accident histories and/or 2+ owners and most haven't had maintenance in 6 months or longer. So a Honda pre-owned + certified at the price they're offering is actually crazy good and I should just take it (especially since it's under budget). But my dad instructed to let THEM get back to ME, but I'm like, "I want it now!" Impatient me!2 -

Sorry I haven't been keeping up with things this week; finals and other life events kicked my *kitten* hard! I am happy to report that I have now completed all the formal coursework for my PhD with a 4.0 average, and that the other life events seem to be working themselves out so things are looking up. At least running has been going well! It is officially winter here in Chicago: my run on Thursday was in 18*F weather with 20 mph winds (real feel: 2*), and then today's run was 20*F with 12 mph winds and some snow flurries during the last mile. We are getting a good amount of snow today (forecasted to continue through tomorrow) so I hope the sidewalks won't be too bad come Monday when my next run is scheduled! I hope you all are staying warm and able to get in your planned miles!
Forgot to add: I registered today for the Polar Dash 5k on January 7th! I’m really excited since this will be my first race since my stress fracture, but also nervous because it’ll give me a concrete answer on exactly how much I’ve regressed. I'm hoping I can do it in 24:30, but I'll need to add in a little speed work between now and then to see how realistic that would be. Of course the conditions will probably be awful in early January so I might have to revise my goal come race day, here in Chicago you never know what the weather will bring!
